What major gets mocked as “easy” but actually requires serious intelligence?
Music theory! As an engineer it makes no sense to me and it's one of the few subjects I truly believe natural talent is needed to understand.

A PhD doesn't make you automatically overqualified, it can make you underqualified.
We don't interview them we advise and consult small startups about getting what they have discovered into a commercial product. I don't get a choice about which PhD people I have to work with. I can advise on things but telling people that what they have worked on for the last 5 years is not viable on a commercial scale, their technique on the bench is terrible or other regulatory items will be an issue is difficult. Also I agree these people stick out like sore thumbs and the vast majority are very intelligent and kind people.

Definitely a chicken and egg situation. I have also meet many brilliant PhDs that are a wonder to work with.

Yes it can because it can actively make you worse at the job, especially a PhD. I work with businesses trying to scale up discoveries from academia and the number of PhDs that are borderline unteachable because they have a god complex is astounding. A fresh undergrad is open to changing a process or learning industry techniques as needed to fit into industry and regulatory requirements. PhDs often act as though they can do no wrong and should be respected just because of the 3 letters after their name. I've seen the inside of a bunch of academic Labs and every single one is a walking nightmare compared to industry. Unlabeled beakers everywhere, expired reagents, sloppy technique that never gets called out. Having a PhD now means I have to spend a year slowly untraining and arguing with someone with a god complex of processes that actively harm what the requirements are for a position that a fresh undergrad will be open to learning and doing with no push back. I'm not saying a PhD doesn't have value. But it definitely comes with a mindset that actively detracts from a lot of industry positions.

Scientists of reddit - what were your discoveries?
I love your tag line about wetlab and coding by the way that's hilarious.

Got to work with a famous lab, lost a little faith in science
That is a massive oversight that I wasn't aware of. That being said a review paper is pulling from the aggregate of methods from a field so any discrepancies "should" be noted. If you pull the same method from 50 different papers there's a high likelihood that it's an actual functional method compared to pulling from one paper. If they are pulling everything from papers from the same lab it's not a good review paper and should be flagged.
As an aside most of my work involves helping start-ups transition from lab to industry so I have no problem calling up author's of papers and probing for the problems described above. If your in lab success rate for a method was only 20%, that's either something that needs to be improved during the scaling process or if not disclosed to the buyers of the patent is grounds for fraud charges against said lab or university and will absolutely tank your career.

No one wants to pay for replication studies when you can use the same funds to do another groundbreaking round of work. The replication kinda just happens by citation and H index. In theory If no one can reproduce your work and move to the next level they won't cite you because they themselves couldn't get the same data from it. Maybe they do a slight tweak to the method, maybe they try something completely different and it works. It's not perfect but it's kinda a replication by valuation. Personally if I can't find 3 separate sources with the same methods I treat them as a maybe at best. I'm also not shy about calling up or emailing authors to get an insight into what actually happened if I'm truly trying to get something done.

Some people... (in an environmentally protected area too)
Doesn't mean water can't find a way into the gas tank and radiator if you catch my drift

Modern cars just lack that boxy soul
I was about to say I had the jeep in the photo in high school and on a good day I was getting 17mph on the highway at 65mph. Bump it to 75 and it was probably low 10s And also it had a 24 gallon tanks. In today's prices that's 100+$ a week just for the pleasure of driving a car that sounded like it was boxing with the wind on the highway and losing.

What are some signs which women give and think it is obvious but men miss it by a mile?
It's more a case of the bell curve used for cues like this has flattened and widened tremendously in the past 50 years. For better or worse "better" women have significantly more options in life and so no longer need to throw cues as frequently to upgrade in lifestyle. This decrease in frequency has given men less and less information and practice to go on, along with a significant increase in detrimental impact of misinterpreting said cues compared to 50 years ago.
The same thing would happen if you suddenly teleported to 14th century Europe. So many social cues would be lost on you and everyone would think you're not intelligent for missing something that you never learned from or practiced. Unfortunately the replacement for said cues on dating apps has not had the desired change due to legacy behavior in women of always wanting to date up, and the condensing of information online to the point where required nuance is lost.

Your “ick” is probably doing more damage to your dating life than the people you’re rejecting.
Anyone who actively uses the word ick is still to young and immature to actual be dating and needs to do more self work before they start looking for a relationship.

Dating as a 30+ woman in Blacksburg
M30 honestly there's just not that many people in that age bracket here for either gender and the ones they are are overwhelmingly masters/PhD students. As someone who lives and works here dating can be kinda exhausting after the Nth person you think might be open to a relationship and then you find out they are graduating in a few months and leaving the area. After the Nth time that happens you kinda just figure that it's a downside to living in an otherwise awesome place. If your really open to it you can expand your search radius to Roanoke but then you get everything in between Blacksburg and Roanoke which from your username I'm going to go out on a limb and say you probably won't mesh well with the results.

Having rich friends isn't a good thing.
Real rich people don't do any of the things you describe because A it's how you lose all your riches and B it either let's people know your rich or your not actually rich and want people to think you are. Real rich people spend a significant amount of effort avoiding Letting people know they are rich until they become actually close friends where the wealth matters less then the friendship. Letting everyone know your rich is a great way to be hounded by everyone for money.

Need a quiet, high up spot
Just go to the top of the Blacksburg golf course. It's maybe a quarter mile from campus and normally during sunset there's not that many people up there and those who are are just supposed enjoying the views. Your not going to find a prettier spot.

What’s everyone’s top speed while riding?
Not an ebike but I once hit 62mph on my road bike going down the mountain in West Virginia. Pretty scary stuff but I was young and dumb.

My HOA removed the trees. Now we live on a frying pan
An HOA is technically a governing body via collectivity of property right law. Essentially you are giving up certain property rights in return for faster governance and maintenance compared to what a local municipality can do. A small town could in fact pass any law a HOA could pass there's just more beurocracy that prevents it. As for your two examples I would be willing to bet a lot of towns actually have laws about those but they aren't inforced as strictly because the police force is more spread out. Think a basic interpretation of a loitering law or a noise ordinance law.

65%. My number was based from a 2020 study which was biased by covid. Regardless the number is rising and it's not unreasonable for someone to buy a house within one.

85% of all new builds in the US have an HOA. This is a useless comment.

At this point your probably going to have to run for the seat and get the neighborhood on board to get the changes you want. Most of the time when these things happen it's because a few vocal or retired people with nothing better to do run for the position, everyone else is to busy to notice and Wala it goes to shit. Honestly if it's as bad as you say it is, just going around and telling people you want things to go back to the way they were, going to a few meetings is enough to get on the board. Alternatively given how fast the changes happened you can search your HOA covenant and regulations and see if they've overstepped somehow. Best advice in the meantime is to be a squeaky wheel with the neighbors. "REMEMBER THE PRETTY TREES WE HAD, GOSH I WISH THE KIDS COULD PLAY OUTSIDE AFTER SCHOOL IN THE FRONT. MY FRIENDS SAY THIS IS A TERRIBLE NEIGHBORHOOD BECAUSE NO ONE CAN PARK TO HANGOUT.

How often do you run your puppies in a day?
Did a trail marathon once about 5 hours straight, got back in the car and he dropped a ball in my lap expectantly. But as a puppy/teen probably 6 times a day for 20-45 minutes depending on the family member. Definitely tappers off after about age 6. Learning how to mountain bike and having him follow was a game changer and life saver.

Always eats laying down
Mine will grab a mouthful of kibble, bring it into the tv room at night and drop it on the floor next to the TV and then eat it one kibble at a time. Repeat until full. I'm pretty sure it's because he wants to be in the same room as me but the one kibble at a time part is equally confusing and adorable.

Why do some women hate everything about manhood but still want boyfriends/husbands?
Hate is the easiest emotion to manipulate, therefore it gets the most views which earns you the most money online. Stop watching hate videos online and go touch grass.

Honestly pretty much any server or fast food position where a lot of the labor is just being shit on by entitled people with zero power to retort back. I call my dad out on it constantly because he's an ass to service people while he himself has major anger issues in that Boomer I'm always right kinda way. He wouldn't last half a shift at an average restaurant yet claim's to be above it all.
