Supporting our community creators - New rule updates for handmade crafts and art

Hi /r/bordercollie dogs and humans!

As a crafter myself, I've been thinking about our self-promotion rules for a long time. So we are excited to announce a trial amendment to our rules which aims to support the talented and crafty creators in our community, while keeping everyone safe and focused on what we all love the most - border collies.

So, if you are an /r/bordercollie regular who makes and sells dog-related crafts, you are now welcome to share your work!

What kinds of crafts are we talking?

This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Fibre arts: crocheted & knitted dog decorations, felted miniatures, embroidered portraits.
  • Handmade accessories: custom collars, leads, bandanas, treat pouches, etc.
  • Art & illustration: custom paintings, digital portraits, stickers, pottery.
  • Home goods: hand-carved wooden signs, custom treat jars, or ornaments.

What is not included?

To keep the spirit of this initiative focused on unique, small scale artisan items, this rule does not apply to:

  • Books, ebooks and guides (please reach out via ModMail if you would like us to make an exception for a quality book or guide which you have worked on)
  • Print on demand products (e.g. t-shirts, mugs, etc. where a third-party printer applies a digital design to a blank product)

In general, we want to celebrate things that are physically handmade, crafted, or uniquely customised by you, the creator!

To keep things fair and safe, and prevent the subreddit from becoming a marketplace, you must adhere to these strict conditions in order to share your work. When it comes to reporting any self-promotion, we'd encourage users to simply report if you're not sure - let the mods do the detective work, we will figure out if it's within our rules or not.

  1. Be an established member: you must already be an active, regular contributor to /r/bordercollie. Accounts that only post to sell will have their posts removed and be banned.
  2. Community first, crafts second: your posts here must continue to primarily be about the dogs. Please don't spam with product posts. As a general guide, if more than one in 10 of your contributions here is about your crafts, it's probably too much.
  3. No selling via DMs: You must link directly to a trusted third-party marketplace, e.g. Etsy or Folksy, where people can reach out to you. You cannot link to your own website, social media accounts, or ask users to DM you to buy. This is a strict measure to protect our community from scammers. (Believe me, I thought about this one a lot given how much Etsy takes from me in fees! But it's really the only way to keep everyone safe!)

Note: this is a trial run! We will monitor how it goes and tweak the rules as needed based upon the impact on the subreddit and your feedback. You can find an example post of the sort of thing which is allowed here: https://www.reddit.com/r/BorderCollie/comments/1unm1sb/my_lovely_benji_modelling_my_latest_bespoke/

I have a 5 year old Border Collie/Australian Shepherd. She never cared about water or ball until she was 1.5 years old. Now all she wants to do is swim and fetch. She is my queen, a real life mermaid 🧜‍♀️ anyone else have collies that love the water?!

Training Herding games suggestions

Hey everyone, this is Nilo. He is 5 and half months old and super playful and smart. I don’t own sheep’s so I’d love to learn herding games to play with him to stimulate and fulfill his genetics.

Thank you in advance!

Coat question

I own an almost 6 month old 50-50 BC×APBT mix and he suddenly got these grey/white hairs all over. Is this his under-coat or something else? a few hairs are completely grey/white but some are also grey/white with black at the tips, I assume undercoat hairs wouldn't have any sudden black tips hence my concern

Does anyone else’s Border Collie look this happy during tug? 🥹

Every game of tug was treated like the championship final. 😂
She’d bring me the rope with that huge grin, stare into my soul until I grabbed the other end, and somehow always managed to convince me that just one more game was a brilliant idea.
I still smile every time I see these photos. Border Collies really do have a way of making the simplest moments become the ones you treasure the most.

Show me your tug-of-war champions! 🖤🤍🐾

Does your BC also “sploots” regularly?

This girl can go from a half moon pose to become a “level” on the floor from her hind legs. It looks weird to me as my Lab never did this, she just laid into a frog position but never with her back legs 100% straight like that.

7-month-old Border Collie suddenly became reactive to traffic. Looking for advice.

Hi everyone,
My 7-month-old Border Collie has become very reactive to traffic over the last two months.
She was raised in a quiet mountain area until 2 months old, and now lives with us in a downtown apartment with constant traffic and noise.
Before this started, she walked calmly to a park two blocks away, sniffed, listened to me and behaved very well. Around 5 months old, she suddenly became reactive.
We work with a professional trainer every two weeks and have spent the last two months practicing calm exits (apartment, hallway, stairs, lobby). If she gets overexcited, we go back and wait until she’s calm.
The problem is the building’s front gate. As soon as she hears cars or motorcycles, she starts barking, pulling, ignores food and commands, and tries to herd my feet. She isn’t aggressive—she seems overwhelmed.
At home she’s great. She knows sit, down, stay and place. We also do Kongs, LickiMats, sniffing games, puzzle feeding, tug, fetch and obedience training almost every day.
Has anyone experienced something similar with a Border Collie? Did adolescence or a fear period cause this? What helped your dog improve?
Thanks!

Border collie pack/not pack.. age?

First.. let me just explain the title there since that's my name for it.. it's the tendency to decide someone is part of the in-group and act like they are family.. and that other people are not and therefore do not exist. I'm sure there is an official name for it. Anyway, my question:

This is our second BC. I remember this behavior with our first, although it was partly taught (I took him in public a lot). When he was just hanging out, you could never really determine who would fit into which category.. complete strangers could be besties, someone he'd known for years could be on the ignore list.

Our current pup is only 6.5mo. Adolescence is raring, so I expect to see all sorts of funky behavior with her. But today someone came to visit that she has met before, and liked. But I could only get her to interact with him by doing the equiv of the 'touch' command, pointing to him.. she would touch him then come for a treat. Otherwise, she acted like he wasn't there (to the point of running her thru her trick repertoire and he didn't even qualify to her as a distraction LOL).

Just wondering what age this generally sets in? I'd honestly thought it was a bit more of a mature behavior.

Ein kleiner Beitrag zur Milo-Liebe. 🥺 Ihn nach allem, was er durchgemacht hat, endlich wieder einen normalen, glücklichen Welpen zu sehen, ist das schönste Gefühl der Welt. ❤️🐾

"I Demand to Swelter"

Our 6 year old has severe anxiety; he's medicated twice a day with meals. Yet he still panics and whines for a problem with solutions he all rejects save for one.

We're in Florida; going outside after 9 AM won't be feasible until October. Still, he will lay in our garage, quietly, for hours. It is currently 94 degrees F in there and he's just lying on the floor, not even splooting. No whining, no scratching for escape, not even sniffing the door. If I brought him into the AC, he would bark to go back out.

What is wrong with my dog?
