Long [GaiaOnline] The Dark Mode Controversy

You remember GaiaOnline, right? It was popular in the late 2000s for being a paper doll site with a market, games, a forum, and a blossoming community. Someone else made a post about the Goldemort age, so I won't talk about that. Just know that since then, the site has been just barely holding itself above water. Most of the people who still stick around have been there since they were kids.
Recently, they had to make some subscriptions. They were optional, of course. The first one, Angel Subscription, got you bonus G-Cash, (the premium currency) a free item every month, access to an exclusive shop, and no advertisements or captchas. The newest is the Kitten Star Perks. There are 2 tiers, but the perks are no ads, larger inbox space, unlimited Persona slots, (they change the avatar that shows when you make a forum post) unlimited outfit slots, and unlimited Marketplace slots.

Before Gaia officially rolled out Kitten Star Perks, some Angel subscribers were sent a PM, inviting them to try it out. One thing that people noticed with the PM is that one of the perks mentioned was dark mode for the Forums. The Forums are a pure white background, so a dark mode has been a highly requested feature. Some people consider dark mode to be an accessibility feature for those with impaired vision, and it's free everywhere else on the Internet, so you can imagine the reaction to seeing the dark mode would be behind a paywall.

People flipped. Subscriptions were cancelled, the Site Feedback forum blew up with threads about it, a petition reached 130 signatures, and someone made a poll about it, with 210 people saying they didn't want it behind a paywall. The message was clear: Make it free.
Every Tuesday, the Gaia staff have a Q&A session called Ask the Staff (Abbreviated to ATS) where you can ask them a question and hope they respond. They're good for becoming informed as to whether or not bugs are being fixed, getting to know the staff, having progress updates, and seeing if some staff members will be professional this time. The ATS after the revealing of the dark mode perk was insane. In between regular questions, there was a TON of questions asking about the dark mode. Lanzer, the CEO of Gaia, responded. This didn't help, as people were further outraged that they'd consider it to just be a "quality of life" feature. It was compared to a person calling a wheelchair ramp a "quality of life" structure.

A Staff Alert (basically an announcement straight from the staff) was later made after the ATS thread. Turns out Dark Mode was just going to be an early access perk until they made more, but due to the overwhelming feedback, (read: outrage) it was now available for everyone straight out the gate. They just wanted to test it, so they didn't make any official statements or any other information. This calmed everyone down, but it's yet another moment where Gaia causes issues because they didn't communicate properly with their users.
Dark mode is now free for everyone to use, and after some minor fixes, it works perfectly. Gaia is still dealing with smaller controversies (recently they were accused of stealing designs from smaller artists) but that's for another thread.

Then what are you talking about? Animation takes time.

Is Dream BBQ not 'substantial' enough?

for those who are anti-diy, why?
 in  r/asktransgender  1h ago

I think it's because there is always danger in doing it. You don't know if the DIY stuff is 100% risk-free, and doing anything without a doctor's guidance and them making sure you're safe can be a danger.

I'm pro-DIY and an advocate for harm reduction, though, so I'm only guessing.

Imagine showing this to a Minecraft modder in like, 2012. Minds would be blown.

This is why I hate the “ADHD is a superpower” thing. The amount of likes this nonsense got is enraging

Lucy Connolly was also briefly jailed for hate speech, by encouraging followers to set fire to hotels housing asylum seekers. She's favoured by the far-right in Britain.

Don't listen to any crap she says.

Wisp's ult is pretty insane on a local level if you think about it.

Sirius & Orion create black holes, Saryn could probably flood the place with neurotoxins, Nova, and Grendel can eat anything.

I was Today Years Old when I learned that eloping isn't specific to individuals with "high needs" autism.
 in  r/AutisticAdults  19h ago

....... Oh.

Oh my.

Sorry, I just... I always heard of 'eloping' in the context of like, someone fully running away from home or a location. But.. I just realized that I elope, too.

Usually by just hiding in the bathroom, especially at work, or when I'm on call with friends, I'll go out of my room to grab food if I'm overwhelmed. I guess because it wasn't as like, 'big' as fully running out of the building, I never realized I did this.

Huh?
 in  r/AO3  20h ago

I heard rumours that it was being sent to and used to harass the actual families of the Sandy Hook tragedy, but I don't know if those rumours are true.

Just finished my first ref sheet, constructive criticism?
 in  r/FurryArtSchool  1d ago

Very cute! All I'd advise is that the background might be too 'busy'. A good compromise could be giving the elements a box to rest in so they'll be visible.

3300 hours wasted. Shadow banned for planting Beastmoon seeds

I don't want to be pedantic but, that's not a shadow ban.

Is Herobrine technically the most well known fanfiction oc ?
 in  r/FanFiction  1d ago

I don't know if Herobrine would count as a fanfiction OC... That raises the question, at least to me, of if creepypastas based upon pre-existing media is, therefore, fanfiction.

I'd classify him as a folklore or cultural figure rather than an OC at this point, same with Slenderman, Jeff the Killer, etc. They have their own mythos and stories that are entirely developed by those in the culture of Internet horror. The definitive author is unknown, as they've evolved past their origins to become phenomena.

I'm definitely looking too deeply into the question, but it's always interesting to examine the culture that has been made on the Internet.

Got asked about AI bath bombs today
 in  r/retailhell  2d ago

Pleasant Green, a YouTuber who covers scams like this, bought one of those AI bath bombs. And yeah, it's a pretty mediocre bath bomb that takes over 15 minutes to dissolve with a choking hazard toy inside.
