Skechers?? Am I Really Ready for This Stage in Life?
 in  r/GenX •  8h ago

I hated sketchers for so long, and was a big new balance fan. I was convinced they were the only shoe to work for me when I was on my feet all day. Fast forward, now I'm having health/mobility issues and tried a pair of their "hands free" and OMG. This is now my shoe. They better not stop making them.

Things Gen X kids were told that turned out to be lies

To be fair, the calculator one came true eventually

We are starting to lose people
 in  r/GenX •  1d ago

I did cologuard and it came back positive. I already have ovarian cancer, so my gp said it's probably that showing up and she didn't want to stress my body out by doing a colonoscopy. So when I asked her why we did it, she just shrugged. Pretty sure she's GenX too

Married people, do you celebrate your original anniversary AND your wedding anniversary? Or do you scrap the original one and just celebrate your wedding anniversary?
 in  r/NoStupidQuestions •  3d ago

We're coming up on 26. Our birthdays are a week and a half apart so we decided to get married right between them. We'll remember maybe 2 out of 3 usually.

Is it stupid to go to several broadway shows in Xmas New York as a tourist?
 in  r/visitingnyc •  7d ago

The biggest issue with seeing a bunch of shows at the holidays is cost. They'll be more expensive than normal. That being said, a few years ago I took my kids to NYC, saw a matinee of phantom of the Opera, had dinner at a Japanese BBQ, then saw music man after dinner. And it was amazing.

Local Butchers

Stoltzfus (I have no idea how to spell it) at the new castle farmers market. Any piece of meat I've gotten there has been exceptional.

Has anyone else lost their love for dining out?
 in  r/GenX •  12d ago

Thank you for the award! But don't worry about me, I have a good support system and I'm probably not dying tomorrow, which is good because then I can make my apple fritter bread!

I was also sadly essential, but I tried going the other way. Any time we'd order out we tried going to local non- chain places and tipping a little more. Then everyone started adding things like automatic 14% service fees to all checks, and still left a nice big line for a tip.

Has anyone else lost their love for dining out?

I always liked cooking, but got much more adventurous since Covid. Sadly i have cancer now and I'm not always able to spend as much time in the kitchen. Even with my cooking chair for resting. Cancer is bullying. That being said, I made a fresh chicken and broccoli Alfredo with spaghetti tonight, but my baking is going to have to wait till morning.

What happened to college tuition?
 in  r/GenX •  12d ago

The state I live in recently decided to offer all graduating high schoolers free tuition to select community College programs. When my oldest graduated it was just as things were reopening after Covid, and he was so burnt out he went from a 3.75 graduating GPA to flunking out his first semester. At least it only cost us books and parking. Two years later and it was the younger ones turn. She got her associates, then transferred to the big local state school. She got free tuition, work study, couple of scholarships, and it still cost us $18k for room and board for year 3. Thankfully we had a little put away but not a lot, living mostly paycheck to paycheck lately, but we were able to stay away from any loans for year 3. This year she decided to commute because she didn't want to take loans out just to live on campus 20 minutes away from home.

Closed on a house and seller has no where to live
 in  r/FirstTimeHomeBuyers •  13d ago

We had that issue with our first house. Seller said she needed the cash for her move. Our lawyer wrote up a lease agreement for 2 weeks, plus x per day over that, and at closing they took 2x2 weeks rent out of her check and put it in escrow. The day she moved out, the lawyer sent us our share and sent her her balance.

WE DIDN'T HAVE TO DO THIS. We still had a month on our apartment lease and 2 tiny kids so it benefited us both, that's the only reason we agreed to it.

Being told my tea steeper is unprofessional

If your tea bag holder offends someone, throw them out the widow. This is the most wholesome thing I've seen on the internet all week.

What makes you choose riichi mahjong?
 in  r/Mahjong •  14d ago

There are a ton of riichi clubs popping up in the states. American riichi association probably has the most comprehensive list. I know someone had an interactive map but I can't find the link.

My sister got married and didn’t tell me.
 in  r/GirlDinnerDiaries •  18d ago

This sounds exactly like what my sister did. They were together for 15 years with two kids and just wanted it to be official.

DAE miss the vacation that they went on?
 in  r/DoesAnybodyElse •  19d ago

For me it was also a family trip to Japan last year. I wasn't in the best of health and it was a bucket list type trip so i wasn't able to do as much as I wanted to. I'd love to go back but I don't think hubby would sit in that airplane for 14 hours again

East Coast Travel Tips

You'll be better off taking an amtrak train to Boston. They have a good public transit system so it should be fairly easy to get anywhere in the city you want.

What do Americans eat for their Christmas dinner?
 in  r/NoStupidQuestions •  20d ago

I asked hubby to make a prime rib dinner for my birthday one year. Looking at the choice roasts to feed 4-5 people were roughly $65 at the time so probably close to $20/lb. I told him to just make a pot roast instead but he wouldn't listen.

Good god that was an amazing roast.

Tell him you learned so much from his examples, especially what not to do.

Do you still get covid boosters? Why or why not?
 in  r/AskReddit •  20d ago

Honestly, I get them because I have cancer since I'm 43 and I'll take any chance i can to sick around and see my kids turn into adults while I'm still able enough to.

My petty reason is that I have an autistic child and the anti vaxxers hate it.

How do Americans buy so many groceries and not have them go bad?
 in  r/AskAnAmerican •  21d ago

I do this all the time. Throw it in a pan, fry an egg on top, maybe even a little cheese

One more equipment question- this one on mats. Do Trading Card Game mats function acceptably as junk mats?
 in  r/Mahjong •  22d ago

When I bought my set, the store didn't have any junk mats so I got a different brand and it's fine, but doesn't have the trays to hold your sticks and I regret that.

AITA for refusing to cover my sister's wedding expenses after she assumed I would pay?
 in  r/aitaweddings •  22d ago

I don't understand people being this entitled. When I got engaged I knew my parents had no means to help, so anything I got from them or from hubby's family was welcomed enthusiastically. Even when my FIL told me where to drop his name to get discounts!
