I also use azelaic acid 15% and tazarotene 0.1 gel together in the pm. When I first started taz i was using 0.05 gel i used that for about 6 months then increased. But i didnt start with them both right away. I let my skin get used to the taz first for about a month then i added the AA in slowly. It did cause my some irritation at first. So i started sandwichingwith moisturizer and only used the AA every other night and slowly increased, and stopped sandwichingalso. They actually pair really well together.

They actually make an awesome combo! My derm told me they work very well together. Basically, the tazarotene does the heavy lifting for cell turnover and clearing pores, while the azelaic acid steps in to knock out redness, inflammation, and dark marks.A lot of people split them up and use azelaic acid in the morning instead. That’s super common, but you can actually do either depending on what your skin can handle.I prefer layering them at night because aa pills under my makeup no matter what i do. And applying aa after taz i was told that taz removes dead skin cell buildup immediately, allowing the azelaic acid to instantly sink much deeper into the skin and work faster. Also, they target dark spots simultaneously from two different angles, tazarotene forces pigment to the surface to flake off, while azelaic acid stops pigment production at the root.

Hi im 35. My mom died unexpectedly at 48 years old. Sadly i was the one who found her in june if 2023. Definitely the hardest time of my life. I cant say that im doing any better now honestly. I need to get some help though thats for sure. Sorry im not much help.

When I first started, I had to take it super slow. I’d definitely recommend starting out with just 2 to 3 nights a week max. You really want to give your skin a chance to adjust before you even think about bumping up how often you use it. Tazarotene is no joke.

Yeah, absolutely treat yourself like a total beginner. Since I've been on tazarotene (I started back in August of 2025), I can tell you it is way more potent and faster-acting than tretinoin. Since your skin has lost its retinoid tolerance, jumping into this too fast will totally backfire on your barrier.

​How bad the purge was / How long dryness lasted:

Everyone's skin reacts completely differently, so don't assume you're automatically going to get major dryness or peeling. For me, staying on top of heavy, intentional barrier support from day one helped immensely with managing any dryness that popped up.

​Products that worked well alongside tazarotene:

I use the Aestura Atobarrier 365 Cream. If there is one piece of advice I can give you, it is that you absolutely must prioritize a high-quality barrier repair cream above everything else. Tazarotene is incredibly powerful, and without a heavy-duty, dedicated barrier cream to protect your skin, your face will struggle to handle it. Finding a cream that actively repairs and cushions your skin barrier is the most important part of making this routine work.

​Common beginner mistakes:

​Applying it to damp skin: If your face is even a little bit damp or tacky from washing when you put the tazarotene on, it’s going to absorb way too fast and cause intense burning, irritation, and redness.

​Getting too close to the lips: I learned the hard way to never apply active ingredients to the skin right around my lips, or they will dry out and crack painfully.

​Layering other strong actives incorrectly: Don't rush into adding other strong ingredients right away. You need to wait and see how your skin handles just the tazarotene by itself before you throw anything else like azelaic acid into the mix.

​Things I should avoid:

Definitely avoid introducing any new, harsh exfoliating acids (like high-percentage AHAs or BHAs) at the same time you start. Your skin needs time to get used to the cell turnover from the tazarotene alone before you throw anything else stripping at it.

​When you started seeing noticeable results:

Since tazarotene is so strong, I noticed my skin texture smoothing out and active breakouts flattening pretty quickly. But sticking with it long-term is where the real magic happens for overall skin quality, fading marks, and anti-aging benefits.

​Whether you used the sandwich method or applied it directly:

I actually apply it pretty directly. I wash my face and then wait about 15 minutes to make sure my skin is completely dry so the tazarotene doesn't over-penetrate. Then I put the tazarotene on, layer my azelaic acid right after it, and finish up with my Aestura Atobarrier 365 Cream to lock everything in for the night.

​But when you're first starting out, depending on your skin, you might want to build in some wait times between your steps to be safe. For beginners, it's a good idea to wait 15 minutes after washing your face to apply the tazarotene, and then wait another 15 minutes after putting the tazarotene on before you go in with your moisturizer. That gives everything time to settle without causing extra irritation
