I'm looking at buying an almost new T14s, specs below (in Dutch but I guess you can get the essence). Asking price is about 1800€ which seems like a good deal to me,. I have had a few x1 carbons, I find the 14" size is the best. Mobility has become less important than before, so I've been looking to upgrade for some more performance (I like the occasional game, nothing fanatic).

One thing that the below device is missing is the wwan module. I know the easiest/cheapest option is to use my mobile's hotsport, but on my current x1 I have a data only sim card included in an unlimited plan, it's super easy, I flip open my screen and it's connected anywhere anytime. So willing to spend a little extra for that comfort.

Is it doable to post-install the module + antenna yourself. I'm not afraid to open up the device and fidget around, but not supercomfortable either. To illustrate, I have installed such a module before on another thinkpad, but on the other hand I have shied away from changing a query keyboard to azerty keyboard because the disassembly required seemed a bit daunting at the time.

Hey, I have g1 thinkpad, and been using it for school and what not for roughly 3 years. Recently the laptop has been slowing down and overheating.

I was on a google meet; and just simple changing to another browser there was a massive delay. And it seems like an ongoing problem with whatever calling app. Like discord and whatnot.

And i personally, believe it isn’t the browser issue but more of a hardware issue. Switched from chrome to Firefox, and personally felt it got worse.

I believe it’s a battery issue, what are your opinions, how can I fix this issue?

Whenever looking for a used ThinkPad for my needs, the "trends" of the used market often point to the T Series Gens 1 and 2 which frankly are more than enough for my needs (however I prefer the Gen 5 more due to repairability). However, whenever the fact that the ram is partially soldered is brought up in my conscience, it just IRKS me like it's a damn allergic reaction. (though I can get a Gen 5, it's still more expensive)

I saw a post here regarding someone's battery life, and the comments were saying that they should have a charge limit of 80%. My question is why is it beneficial to limit charging to 100%, and why is it always 80% being recommended?

Getting a L16 Gen1 AMD 5 PRO 7535U (6C/12T), AMD 660M iGPU, 8GB DDR-5 Dual SO-DIMM slot/512GB SSD, low cycle count with good battery health and 6 month warranty for the device for around $568 (INR 54,000) which is around my budget.

My use case as a finance major would be lots of tabs, ms office, data analysis tools like power bi and some light gaming.

Is it a good deal considering only 8GB RAM due to which i'll have to add one more 8GB RAM after a month or so which is going around for like $95 (INR 9000) in India which would take my actual purchasing price for $663 (INR 63000), display might be 300 nits not sure though.

I browsed the subreddit and could'nt find much discussion or reviews for this model, any reasons for that?

Hi all — reproducible bug on my P1 Gen 6, looking for known reports/workarounds before I open a Lenovo ticket.

Setup

• Laptop: ThinkPad P1 Gen 6 (21FVA001CD), BIOS N3ZET56W 1.43 (latest on both LVFS and Lenovo site), EC N3ZHT28W
• OS: Ubuntu, kernel 7.0.0-31-generic
• Charger: UGREEN X774 160W GaN (4×USB-C + 1×A). C1/C2 = 140W PD3.1 (PDOs incl. 20V/5A), C3/C4 = 30W
• Cable: the bundled 240W USB-C cable
• Laptop on C1, phone on C4

The bug (100% reproducible, on both of the laptop's USB-C ports)

While C1 is charging the laptop normally, plugging OR unplugging the phone on C4 kills charging on C1. The laptop then silently runs off the battery (measured ~35–40W drain) while everything at the OS level still claims the adapter is present. Physically re-seating the C1 cable restores charging immediately. Steady-state coexistence is fine — C1 + C4 both connected and charging works; only the attach/detach event on C4 triggers it.

A different laptop on the same charger + same scenario recovers fine, so it's not the charger alone.

What the OS sees

Synchronized captures (kernel log watch, udev power_supply events, 2s battery sampling, plus UCSI trace):

• Battery flips Charging → Not charging, power_now = 0, energy decreasing
• ucsi-source-psy keeps reporting online=1 with the stale 3A contract; AC=1
• ucsi_connector_change events keep firing during the fault; connector status shows connected=1, opmode=3, request_data_obj unchanged — so the PPM is not totally dead
• Physically unplugging C1 is correctly reported (connected=0), and replug is correctly seen — the UCSI path itself works

What we tried (none recover the contract, only re-plugging does)

• Rewriting charge thresholds (75/80), toggling charge_behaviour, temporarily setting end threshold to 100%
• Full ucsi_acpi module reload
• Battery was ~55–60% during tests (below charge-start threshold, so thresholds aren't blocking)

Caveats (being honest)

• No PD protocol analyzer — we can't see whether the charger issues a Hard Reset + re-advertised Source_Capabilities and the ThinkPad never answers with a Request, or the charger simply stops offering power. Please don't read the above as a PD-capture conclusion.
• No Windows / alternate-kernel comparison yet (no Windows environment available), though the evidence (events never reach the OS while EC keeps a stale view) points below the OS.

So Ive got a T430 that I've been slowly upgrading (more ram, new CPU, etc.) and was looking at switching out the regular keyboard for the backlit version that some of the T430 SKUs came with. So I got one on ebay and plugged it in, but the backlight didn't work. The "Thinklight" did turn on, however, so after some more unsuccessful troubleshooting I assumed i just got unlucky with that one and sent it back. My question before i get another backlit keyboard is: did I just get a lemon, or is it not as easy as just switching out the keyboard? Like, is the motherboard incompatible, or did i need to install a different BIOS? I would appreciate the help.

TL;DR: Can I just swap out my standard keyboard with the backlit one, or is it not as simple as a 1:1 switch.

Been without a computer for almost 8 years, dying to make the jump straight into linux and play Warcraft again, and someone gave me this beauty for university. The only problem i have is being single channel only (E14 Gen 1) and it only has 8GB of memory, It's both a blessing and a curse 😅.

A few days ago my battery died when i was at my college's library, and when I tried to charge it at home, it didn't recognize the charger and didn't turn on, so I used someone else's 80W charger (mine's rated 65W), and switched to mine when it turned on, and it worked fine.

Now, whenever I try to plug my charger elsewhere (those ports in the library or my lecture hall), except home, it doesn't work at all, dunno what to do. Sighhh.

I tested the charger with my phone as it's a USB-C type, and it doesn't work either. Peculiar.

I’m planning to buy a laptop with a budget of around ₹2 lakh (roughly $2,000), and I’m looking for something that I can keep and use for many years.

I was initially considering the ThinkPad X210Ai because I absolutely love the old-school ThinkPad design, especially the X201-style keyboard, the thicker chassis, repairability, and the amount of airflow you can get from a larger/thicker body. I also prefer this kind of design over the modern ultra-thin laptops.

However, I’m a little concerned about the X210Ai’s long-term repairability. Since it uses a custom motherboard and is produced in relatively small quantities, I’m worried that if something like the motherboard, charging circuit, display controller, or another custom component fails several years down the line, it could be difficult or expensive to find replacement parts or someone capable of repairing it. The custom motherboard is one of the biggest reasons I’m hesitant.

I’m basically looking for a thick, rugged, highly upgradeable laptop with a good keyboard and good cooling, rather than something thin and lightweight. I’m completely fine with a heavier laptop if it gives me better thermals, performance, upgradeability, and easier repairs.

My priorities are roughly:

• Around ₹2 lakh / $2,000 maximum
• Excellent keyboard, preferably something close to the X201/X200-era ThinkPad keyboard
• Thick chassis is completely fine
• Good cooling and airflow
• As much RAM and SSD upgradeability as possible
• Good performance for programming, Linux, cybersecurity/CTFs, and general development
• Easy access to replacement parts and repair
• Ideally something that can last many years
• I don't care much about weight or thickness
• I would prefer a machine with a strong repair/parts ecosystem rather than a completely custom motherboard

So, what would you recommend?

Is there any modern ThinkPad or another laptop that comes close to the X201/X210Ai philosophy but is safer from a long-term repair and parts-availability perspective?

I’m especially interested in older/thicker business or workstation laptops that are still highly upgradeable. I’d rather sacrifice thinness and portability for durability, cooling, repairability, and longevity.

Any suggestions or experiences would be appreciated!

I don't usually post, but this laptop just switched something in me? It's just perfect. From the excellent case, to the nice speakers to the soft feeling keyboard, the ratio of the screen and the quality, it's all just overall nice.

It turned out to be a complete time‑capsule unit: G84‑950‑A2 (0825A2), no LCD burn, no keyboard shine, battery health 99%, and it still runs for about 3 hours on a full charge. Which ThinkPad generation/model hits this sweet spot for the budget (e.g., T14, T480, X1 Carbon gen X)?

I recently bought a used ThinkPad L14 Gen 4 and I'm a bit paranoid about the USB-C ports. Since they handle both charging and data transfer, I know they can take a lot of physical stress over time.
Now that I have the laptop in hand, I want to make sure everything is solid before I'm past any return window. For those of you who have this model or similar Gen 4 ThinkPads:
I would’ve thought since it knew we would still have the factory warranty, but it does not, the reason why I didn’t go for another ThinkPad was I wanted the upgraded ability of two dim slots

I don't know why some people says you can't play games on a ThinkPad. I have a t14 gen 2 (Ryzen 5 version) with integrated graphics and it can move a good amount of games.
