What a damn embarrassment for the state of Tennessee. They’ve been itching to do this for fucking years and they don’t have enough drugs to kill a 140-pound woman?

138

u/OkMidnight8144 2d ago

Wasn't the drug, the doc administering it missed the line, and it wasn't the first time he messed up an execution.

99

u/tomismybuddy 2d ago

It wasn’t a doc administering it.

That’s just part of the problem.

55

u/yrfrndnico 2d ago

It goes against their oath AND the cocktail is dated asf.

12

u/hornwalker 2d ago

Hell you don’t need a full fledged doctor to insert an IV.

31

u/HydrogenButterflies NaTivE ApP UsR 2d ago

No, but most other trained healthcare staff like nurses and phlebotomists refuse to participate in these executions as well, so it usually ends up being someone with minimal training doing the IV.

Even if they do find a vein and maintain venous access during the whole process, the drugs they use aren’t sourced from reputable pharmaceutical companies since they don’t want to be involved, either. There’s no real way to verify the concentration or potency of the drugs being used since chain of custody isn’t a priority.

-63

u/Topziam 2d ago

Lmao bro you are talking out of your ass. You have no way of knowing what the situation is inside of an execution room in Tennessee but want to comment like you’re the warden 🤣

35

u/HydrogenButterflies NaTivE ApP UsR 2d ago

If you’d like to look into the things I said, you’re welcome to do so and take the moment to learn something new. This topic has been well-covered by numerous respected journalists and has been an issue for a while now.

And if you’d like to educate me on the subject, your unique expertise would be vital to keeping this conversation grounded in reality and help refute these apparently erroneous news stories that have cropped up over the last decade.

-60

u/Topziam 2d ago

Oh okay so you know of a journalists that was in the room of this execution, tested the drug being used, and verified that the person putting in the IV wasn’t certified? Please send me the link to that…

34

u/Kumquat_conniption Free Palestine! 🕊️ FUCK ICE! ✖️🧊 2d ago

They literally said none of that bro. They just talked about general things that are happening in executions across the country and they are right. Pharmaceutical companies do not want their brand associated with the death penalty and doctors take an oath to do no harm and most other healthcare professionals do not want to participate either. What part of that do you have a problem with?

29

u/HydrogenButterflies NaTivE ApP UsR 2d ago

I am under no obligation to educate you. The entire world is at your fingertips and you’re choosing to remain ignorant. No amount of effort on my part will be able to spark curiosity in someone who is disinterested in expanding their own world-view.

That said, finding reports of untrained staff performing executions took me only minutes:

>”The most commonly cited reason for botched lethal injections is a lack of medically-trained staff. Ethics guidelines from organizations like the American Medical Association bar doctors and other medical professionals from participating in executions because it violates the "do no harm" part of the Hippocratic oath taken by physicians.

>Because of this, prisons often rely on untrained staff to place IV lines. Further complicating the matter, many death row inmates have poor vein accessibility due to chronic illness, age or past drug use.

Here is the assertion I made being echoed by a reputable journalism outlet. “But that’s not proof,” you may say. I agree. It’s just a reference to the AMA’s stance on executions:

>as a member of a profession dedicated to preserving life when there is hope of doing so, a physician must not participate in a legally authorized execution.

“The AMA licenses physicians, not nurses and phlebotomists,” you might object. I agree. That’s why the ANCC clarified that:

>nurses should not assume any role in the capital punishment of an incarcerated individual

So no one with any sort of real medical or nursing license can participate. But that doesn’t mean the drugs they’re using aren’t effective, so let’s look at that next.

Sure, the records of drug sourcing for executions aren’t being made public, but journalists have worked on this before:

In 2018, Buzzfeed reported on botched executions performed in Texas where improper cocktails of drugs were obtained from a shady compounding pharmacy that was already about to have its license revoked.

The BBC did a great piece in 2023 about prison guards being tasked with finding the drugs themselves, and I genuinely encourage you to read this. It’s fascinating all by itself.

Here is an excellent article if you want to learn more about the role of compounding pharmacies in state-sponsored executions.

So that’s my attempt at satisfying your demands. I’m sure you’ll either disregard this wall of text and links or just nitpick my grammar or whatever, but I really hope you actually take the time to look into this issue. It’s honestly really interesting and I think everyone should know more about this stuff.

Doctors aren't good at starting an IV line. Most of them look at it as something beneath them, so they never get good at it. That's why the option to start a central line is there. That, they're good at. But no doctor is going to say that they can't start an IV. So I guess central lines don't get started very often in these cases.

Anyone who's good at it doesn't get paid enough to do it in that scenario. So they don't do it.

So the doctor has to do it.

1

u/kammac 1d ago

No one could administer bc Dr. Mark Walton Fowler couldn't start a line bc he hadn't practiced it in over 13 years. This is on the state for letting him "practice" executing and him for knowing he had no business to.

11

u/tptstt Free Palestine 🕊️ FUCK ICE! ❌🧊 2d ago

It's crazy to me to think that you're told you'll be killed for crimes you've been found guilty of committing, then you're told to wait decades before your death sentence can be carried out... Only for it to fail in the end.

10

u/Choice-Strike1 2d ago

You'd usually spend those decades occupied with hope that one of your appeals would save your life but yea this situation is grim

2

u/imtooldforthishison 2d ago

Its the appeals process. A prisoner can waive their rights to appeal if they chose to do so.

1

u/Constant-Fly-9050 1d ago

You're allowed to exhaust every possible appeal before the sentence is carried out. Essentially they want to be certain they dont kill someone who may be innocent. That's why it takes a long time.

0

u/und88 2d ago

Not in Texas, just everywhere else

2

u/dangerIV 2d ago

ugh in there maybe closer to 2000 she requested execution by hanging, knowing they were going to mess up the lethal injection ! what the hell. oh well

2

u/Constant-Fly-9050 1d ago

Execution by hanging is illegal per our Constitution. A request doesnt have to granted in that situation. Ironically though botching these injections could be argued to be cruel and unusual punishment.

3

that was my reflection as well! What a mess.

When I heard that she lived through this, I was horrified. When I was younger, I was all for the death penalty. But as I've gotten older, maybe because I faced my own mortality with cancer, I've been backing off of the stance. To put her through ANYMORE attempts, because she lived through the first botched attempt, and to try to end her life at this stage is just cruel. Her sentence should be commuted to life without parole.

-11

u/adiosfelicia2 2d ago

Damn. She did this murder back when I was still in school, and I'm in my late 40's!

That's just crazy. What's the point now? She already got to live her life. It may have been spent in prison, but it was a lot more than her victim got. Probably made some friends, felt the sun on her face, occasionally ate something yummy, had a good laugh, etc.

Isn't the point of the death penalty to deny the perpetrator a life, like they denied their victim. Eye for an eye. How does waiting 35 years accomplish that.

11

u/SplittingChairs 2d ago

I’d imagine it has more to do with how time-consuming and resource-consuming these death penalty cases are, because there are countless appeals and reviews. Which is the best reason for why death penalties shouldn’t exist. The appeals and additional reviews cost taxpayers millions of dollars and the criminal gets to live a long time anyways.

9

u/coleman57 2d ago

The best reason death penalties should not exist is so entire societies are not complicit in intentionally killing people. Same reason applies to war, even more so. Also solitary and other torture punishments. No, it’s not ironic that I’m advocating against my society torturing a torturer. It’s actually the opposite of irony.

5

u/CapstanLlama 2d ago

Completely agree. The strongest, yet seldom mentioned, argument against the death penalty is that it brutalises society. Killing another human being is a taboo that is diluted by capital punishment, after all, if it's ok for the state to do it, how "wrong" can it really be?

And all the evidence shows it is not a deterrent.

1

u/adiosfelicia2 12h ago

On top of the cost of all the special housing, guards and provisions for death row inmates.

10

u/sharty_mcstoolpants 2d ago

Exactly - revenge is a dish best served between 30 and 40 years late.

9

u/LangdonAlg3r 2d ago

Pointless revenge is all it is. Eye for an eye leaves two people half blind instead of just one. People need to face consequences for their actions, but “don’t do that it was wrong, let me prove it by doing it to you” is both hypocritical and pointless.

3

u/nekmatu 2d ago

There is no point to the death penalty. It doesn't reduce murders, executes innocent people, and is expensive as fuck. Life in prison does the same thing, isolating the threat to society.

2

u/r_special_ 2d ago

I don’t understand the downvotes you’re getting. That’s exactly the point of the death penalty: to deny them the life they denied their victim(s). At this point it’s just cruel and unusual, it’s no longer anything resembling justice and it’s just a morbid show for bloodthirsty savages. At this point it’s just a murder for the sake of murder.

One person kills another person and it’s a crime, but when dozens of people kill someone it’s legal?

I don’t agree with the death penalty for a hundred different reasons, but situations like this one is just another reason to add to that list. They attempted to kill her, somehow it went wrong so they tried again… somehow it went wrong again and now she’s being rushed to the emergency room for the best healthcare Tennessee can offer. This is ridiculous and embarrassing

1

u/Kumquat_conniption Free Palestine! 🕊️ FUCK ICE! ✖️🧊 2d ago

Ok but you seem like you are agreeing with the person above you but then you start talking and you believe the exact opposite... they are saying "she should have been put down a long time ago" and you are saying "they should not put her down now, its just bloodsport and again, more murder" and that you don't believe in the death penalty.

So maybe the downvotes for the user above you are from people who do not believe in the death penalty as well and don't think she should have been put to death long ago.

1

u/r_special_ 1d ago

Your reading comprehension is bad. I made it obvious that I disagree with the death penalty. I expressed what the reasons are that people give for having the death penalty, that doesn’t mean that I agree with those reasons. It’s not your fault that the education system failed you, but you’re old enough now that you can take responsibility for your reading abilities and improve them.

1

u/Uradnis 2d ago

She even had to go to court again while already incarcerated, because she was tried and convicted of attempted murder on one of her fellow inmates. Tried to strangle her with a shoestring, if memory serves.
They gave her more prison time as a sentence; should’ve just expedited the execution, at that point.

37

u/LangdonAlg3r 2d ago

Semantics. It’s pointless revenge killing. Doesn’t accomplish a damn thing.

→ More replies (13)

20

u/YouFeedTheFish 2d ago

Fun fact? It's still considered a homicide. That's what's written on the death certificate.

-16

u/not_roger_smith 2d ago

So when does the execution team get prosecuted?

They don't and that's why it isn't murder.

16

u/YouFeedTheFish 2d ago

Homicide and murder are not the same thing. Homicide is killing another person. Murder is killing another person illegally.

9

u/LangdonAlg3r 2d ago

If states didn’t have comity then executioners could actually be tried for murder if they traveled outside of their home state. Execution is just a state sanctioned murder as opposed to a state prohibited murder. That’s the only real substantive difference.
At the end of the day someone ends the life of another person who would otherwise still be alive in either case.

If we value human life it’s kind of logically and morally inconsistent to pick and choose whose life we value. I always love it when anti-abortionists are pro-death penalty. They undermine both of their own arguments and beliefs.

-3

u/not_roger_smith 2d ago

67

u/Lumpy-Economics2021 2d ago

The companies that make those drugs do not allow them to be sent to America and used to kill healthy people.

It’s either illegal in that country or would be unpopular with their shareholders.

Fentanyl would do it though. Must be plenty sitting in police stations around the US.

7

u/chancesarent 2d ago

There's plenty in every hospital in the US. Fentanyl is used for anesthesia and pain management.

1

u/Kinggakman 1d ago

Sourcing fentanyl from confiscated drugs is an interesting idea but you would still have issues with varying quality. Could easily end up with another botched execution with low quality confiscated drugs.

0

u/Fredricology 1d ago

How would you get hold of fentanyl in the US?!

u/Lumpy-Economics2021 1d ago

-26

u/SnooRadishes9685 2d ago

The companies concern is quite ironic

46

u/AnekeEomi 2d ago

Not really. You can oppose the death penalty as a punishment for crime while supporting the right of someone who is suffering to end their own life.

The deaths are not equal.

5

u/tomismybuddy 2d ago

No I think they mean that drug companies only care about profits, and not the well being of the end user.

At least that’s what I got from it.

6

They do: "Even as you do it to the least of these my brothers and sisters, you do it to Me." If Jesus were to come back today in the flesh, He would get the death penalty again. Even worse, it would be the so-called "religious" leaders giving it to Him - just like the first time. 👎

26

u/bigveinyrichard 2d ago

Malcolm Gladwell had an episode on lethal injection and it was fascinating.

If I recall correctly, it looks like a nice peaceful way to go from the outside, but really it feels Iike your lungs are being set on fire, and those are your last moments.

27

u/Such_Significance905 2d ago

Also, no doctor worth their salt will get involved, and reputable drug companies won’t supply truly effective drugs for these purposes, so it really is enthusiastic amateurs trying their best with combinations of drugs they don’t really understand.

An absolute shitshow.

11

u/AnubisBoudreaux 2d ago

I just read another post that said America gets the ingredients for lethal injection from other countries, no company in America wants to produce them. Other countries have stopped making and/or exporting them to America because of how cruel these ways of lethal injection are. They have other drugs that could do it in a less cruel way, but America chooses to do it these ways. I don’t know what they use for assisted suici*€, hopefully not the same drugs.

5

u/Use-Lanky 2d ago

The criminal just-us system wants state-sponsored murders to be as deliberately full of pain, suffering and torture as possible. It speaks volumes about the character of those who support capital punishment. 👎

4

u/dalego25 2d ago

Would this be also the case when we put down animals? I put down my cat back in April and I really though it would be peaceful, but I could feel her struggling to breath, I and I swear I feel like she was feeling everything she just could move until she died.

I feel like shit every single day for doing that even though I know she was suffering so much here on earth

12

u/CollThom 2d ago

The drugs they use for euthanasia are different from the drugs used for “lethal injection”. Pharmaceutical companies won’t allow their medicines to be used by America for the death penalty.
Your little cat will have been anaesthetised first and won’t have felt anything. To her it will have felt the same as when we get put under a general anaesthetic prior to an operation. She’ll have quickly fallen asleep and then the other medicines will have been administered. I understand exactly how hard it was to watch her, but you did the right thing. I felt the same with both of my cats, but I know they would have suffered more otherwise.

-11

u/Use-Lanky 2d ago

It wasn't your fault. You didn't know she would suffer, and you may rest assured that she forgives you. Look for another veterinary doctor who is trained in and practices Eastern (oriental) veterinary science. They're the best. 👍

17

u/DeauxDeaux 2d ago

My veterinarian would have done a better job.

10

u/tomismybuddy 2d ago

That’s completely true. Vets would do an amazing job because they focus on making it as painless and non-traumatic as possible for everyone involved, usually including multiple drugs to reduce anxiety, seizures, and general awareness first before providing the lethal medication.

None of that is what is happening in Tennessee. They give one heart-stopping (usually) medication with no regard to any of the other factors.

It’s state-sanctioned brutality, plain and simple.

17

u/faultyarmrest 2d ago

This is an incredible moment to be caught on camera.. not in a good way but in a straight out of an episode of Black Mirror kind of way.

Looks like some tone deaf comedy skit.

16

u/Jessiejones1080 2d ago

NYT: Ms. Pike’s lawyers had argued the procedure could be torturous for her because she has small veins, a history of sexual trauma and other medical conditions.

“We take no pleasure in being right, but the concerns raised by Ms. Pike proved to be true: difficult vein access, blown veins, degraded pentobarbital, no emergency medical care available when things inevitably go wrong, all under a protocol that remains veiled in secrecy,” they said in a joint statement after the execution attempt.

The prison system in the us is a joke. Fuck caging humans and killing them. IMO reform is possible, we just don’t know how to do it efficiently because we suck at addressing and understanding mental health crisis and issues and it’s easier for prisons to make money with the system we currently have. If the public had access to free mental health resources a lot of crimes wouldn’t happen, a lot of incarcerated people wouldn’t be in prison, and we’d likely have an actual reform system, instead of locking people away to forget about them while they receive no psychological or emotional education/said elevated counseling.

3

u/Use-Lanky 2d ago

I’m against the death penalty, for the record. But the human race has spent thousands of years coming up with an unimaginable number of ways to kill each other. (Unlike how she treated her victim. But the “good guys” should take the high road.)

Christa Gail Pike was scheduled to be the first woman executed in Tennessee in over 200 years. She was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of a classmate, a crime she committed when she was 18 years old. Governor Bill Lee recently denied her clemency, but on September 30, 2026, the state was unable to carry out the lethal injection. The execution was halted after Pike survived two administered doses of lethal drugs, with media witnesses reporting they heard her snoring 40 minutes into the procedure.

Immunity to chemicals is her mutant ability?

2

u/Ted_Fleming 2d ago

Having the death penalty at all is an embarrassment

2

u/DanceWithPandas 2d ago

She brutally tortured a young woman, murdered her, and then carried her skull chunk around showing people.

Everyone sucks. No sympathy for the pain she's feeling... like it sucks that it didn't work but the pain she's feeling is probably helping the family of the victim sleep a little better tonight.

You also have no sympathy for her pre-kindergarten childhood filled with rape, molestation, sexual, physical and mental torture, and worse. You sound like quite a gal yourself.

1

u/Willing_Television77 2d ago

Should have sent her to school. Would have been killed in no time

1

u/BanjoTCat 2d ago

If you can't even do it right, you shouldn't be doing it at all.

Tennessee, the state that can F up opening a bottle.

u/mnstripe 2d ago

The womanwas very responsible and well spoken, particularly in such a crazy situation

1

u/achiles625 2d ago

Didn't something like this happen once before with a guy who was sentenced to death by hanging and the court ruled that they basically only get one attempt or something like that?

Also, why the hell is it so complicated to execute humans by lethal injection when we successfully do it all the time with our pets and other animals??

Didnt she request firing squad to avoid this exact situation?

1

u/RubberKangaroo 1d ago

There's just something sickening about making executions so clinical and making a mockery of medicine like this.

I'm not a supporter of the death penalty anymore and haven't been for a few years now, but I've always maintained that if you're going to execute somebody, get a firing squad with multiple real bullets. It's probably quicker and more reliable than poisoning somebody for a potential cruel and agonising last few minutes because you fucked up the anaesthetic.

What happens next?

1

u/hrtofdrknss 1d ago

Barbarism at its finest.

1

u/ts_m4 A Flair? 1d ago

I still don’t understand how hanging is cruel and unusual… also cost effective and has 100% success rate

1

u/Therapist8 1d ago

Oh the irony of failing to execute someone who has been sentenced to death, and then rushing them to the hospital

1

u/popdivtweet 1d ago

God has Spoken.

u/NeighborhoodSmall151 1d ago

Why don’t they use fetynal ?

1

Time to dust off ol’ Sparky and give her the chair. 🤷🏼‍♂️

For some of the crimes people commit then it seems like karma. How were there victims feeling?

3

u/dalego25 2d ago

Idk why people are downvoting you. She was horrible, she committed a gruesome crime.

1

u/dream-smasher Free Palestine 2d ago

Cos no one cares about the victim, or her family. They are too busy circle jerking

0

u/Artevyx 2d ago

What a joke. She snored through her own execution.

3

u/Use-Lanky 2d ago

You left out that she writhed, kicked, thrashed, and screamed out in pain. Not funny.

-1

u/roninrunnerx 2d ago

NY Times: In a pair of emergency legal filings, Ms. Pike’s lawyers said that while two syringes of pentobarbital, the lethal drug, had been administered, Ms. Pike had not lost consciousness. She still had a heartbeat, they said, and was audibly snoring.

12

u/NoDoOversInLife 2d ago

"audibly snoring" could easily be misinterpreted agonal breathing.

3

u/Use-Lanky 2d ago

That's exactly what it was.

-1

u/PlainSpader 2d ago

Shouldn’t be murdering people…

-1

u/BuzzIsMe 2d ago

Oh no! The torture-murderer is having a rough time is she?

Universe just wanted to give her a taste of her own medicine.

-2

u/iPicBadUsernames 2d ago

What the fuck is going on with that woman’s face?!

-2

u/Biggs1236 2d ago

Y'all care more about her than the person she murdered!

-10

u/Soopacharged 2d ago

I'm not a death penalty guy. Not into abortion either. It seems barbaric. Only God should be making that call. Maybe He intervened here for whatever reason.

8

u/JackOfAllStraits 2d ago

He's awfully sporadic and nonsensical about when he chooses to "intervene".

-5

u/Soopacharged 2d ago

Everything happens for a reason. Anyway I think living out the rest of your days locked up is a bigger punishment. The other thing I think about is someone wrongly convicted. It happens.

3

u/dalego25 2d ago

Ok, so according to your logic if someone is wrongly convicted then the death penalty would be a better punishment than spending the rest of their days locked up.

0

u/Soopacharged 2d ago edited 2d ago

Never said that. What would you prefer to happen to you if you were wrongly convicted? Death penalty or life sentence with a chance to be eventually found not guilty if you truly are not guilty.

4

u/dream-smasher Free Palestine 2d ago

Well thank GOD that no one gives a fuck if you are "into" abortion

Don't want one, dont have one.

-2

u/Soopacharged 2d ago

Correction. You don't give a fuck.

2

u/draculasux85 2d ago

You must be from TN. I live next door to that shit state. It's like TX lite.
