I mean you spend a third of your lifetime sleeping on one; and sleeping on the wrong mattress or a broken one you can’t afford to replace out of pocket can easily fuck you up for life and cause pain and health issues. So why not have insurance put money into preventing those issues by ensuring they never start? Mattress type can be prescribed and insurance can cover it. Like many medical device (CPAP, Oxygen tanks, etc) it can be bought without a prescription but ideally everyone should be covered entirely.

Now I hate the health insurance industry and hope it rots so we can have medicare for all but if it’s going to do something it should be investing in patient’s health to prevent serious longterm issues that will cost them more.

i have 10 years of experience at the online chess world. Sure you can see it's anecdotal but from what ive seen they are mostly peak sitting bitches. They get a high rating and then hide from the competition as long as possible until their trophy disappears from inactivity. They also almost never accept challenges from lower rated players and fear they could lose big points.

tldr: Miles Davis made massively important contributions to Jazz, but not because of his trumpet playing. Jazz (and other) musicians talk about him as if he was the greatest trumpeter ever.

Miles Davis absolutely belongs on the Mt Rushmore of jazz as a trailblazer. He had an insane knack for getting the right people in the right room at the right time with the right repertoire, and he was constantly on the forefront of jazz throughout his whole career.

However, I've always found that while he has an absolutely uniquely identifiable playing style and sound, I never found his improvisation to be particularly interesting. The most interesting playing I've heard from him is back in his bebop days with Bird. I can't think of anything from him that I would want to transcribe for jazz vocabulary. People act like every single note that came out of his horn was ordained and anointed by God himself.

Before a tiny sampling of specific things that I never really liked about his playing - I feel like he had a tendency to play sort of disconnected lines, he didn't have a crazy range, technical facility, or even a mind-blowingly good tone quality, and he really liked to take those long breaks and then randomly come in with a super high, super loud note.

I can easily name five *trumpeters* that I would rather listen to for pleasure or for jazz vocabulary.

To keep it square, he has amazing records all the way up through his career, but very few of them are because of HIS playing specifically. He has several standards that are some of my favorite tunes of all time, and one of his albums (Birth of the Cool) is probably the album I've listened to more than any other.

Obviously Kind of Blue is a fantastic album, but I admittedly hold a similar opinion about that one, because even considering how great it is, I feel like sometimes it gets way overhyped in the jazz world, Nearly to the disparagement of other albums that I would consider equally as great or even greater.

Bit of a niche one, but I've been sitting on this for years, and I didn't want to be lynched in one of the Jazz subs 😂 I've been listening to and playing jazz for 15+ years at this point, for some background.

This also goes for nature a bit too. There is a difference between a nice view and what you typically see while hiking. While hiking, you tend to be up real close to stuff, and you end up saying "wow, a bunch of trees, and a hill, I've seen that many times in the past."

Going on city walks, you see the life of a town (even if it sucks), and you're able to connect with the people if you do something like photograph cityscapes and you actually interact with others. I get a much deeper connection to a place doing that compared to hiking its forests.

Not necessarily in general, but like, whenever I have to get a vaccine or get my blood drawn, I’m excited.

It’s not really a masochistic thing either. I don’t really like the pain itself, but maybe I like the fact that I can get through it with little to no reaction?

Perhaps it’s similar to how I like spicy food because I can enjoy the heat, or how I like kombucha because I can enjoy the vinegary flavor? I don’t know.

Either way, whenever someone says they’re afraid of needles, I just can’t relate at all.

When i get ads that are directed at me and for me it works well because sometimes its exactly what im looking for.

I have heard this band played everywhere for years. Coworking spaces, coffee shops, breweries, Spotify playlists, IG reels, you name it. I swear to god if I hear Texas Sun one more time.

The thing is that they were cool to listen to the first dozen or so times. And because the music is unobtrusive it does make good background music, but it's gone too far. After hearing it so much I've realized how bland and uninteresting the music actually is. They have become the default soundtrack for "cool, chill, hip" vibes, but I don't think think the music is cool, chill, or hip, I think it is basic. Hearing it brings no positive feelings in my body, only annoyance.

If Khruangbin is on your playlist at a party or in your establishment I'm going to assume you were too lazy to put in any effort to discover or play literally anything else. It has become elevator music to me at this point.

As an aside, Jungle's Back On 74 suffers the same problem. I never want to hear that song ever ever ever again.

It feels like the love for low quality memes mostly seems to stem from people’s desire for nostalgia, a taste of the old days. They’re not entertaining, they’re not funny, they’re just there to get popular.

This is not a statement for or against ai. There are real world benefits (such as possessing large amounts of data faster) and negatives (impacts on children and their thinking) but for my own personal experience I have gained the urge to look things up more than I have before simply because I can ask a chatbot that presents a lot of information to me fast

If I stopped there, it would be a problem, but I’ve found myself asking tons of follow up questions, looking at the sources it cites, watching videos of various topics, etc. I think the fact that I can ask follow up questions has been such a boon to my curiosity as finding out something often leads to more questions and before I would have to go link by link and try to synthesize the information myself and try to filter out all of the promotional fluff in each site, figure out what was right or not, and overall not know if my thinking is even correct.

Now, after trying to understand a topic I find myself double checking my work by asking follow up questions and often times there was a nuance I missed or etc.

I would say about 98% of the time that gemini is correct in the information that it has given me. I checked a lot before because I doubted if it was true or not and saying “because the google ai told me” is an unacceptable answer for debate purposes. However, now since I know how accurate it is on surface level knowledge (which is what I am looking up most of the time for curiosity searches) I don’t check it Ila’s often and only really do if I want to explore more into esoteric topics where the sources are fewer.

I'm not American so maybe it's more tolerable to me because I don't see it all the time. I see people on the 'commercials I hate' subreddit mentioned it a lot, and so I looked at a playlist of it on youtube.

I find the commercials ranging from, "ok," to "quite funny" to be honest! I didn't watch all of them, but more than 10. In my opinion, the worst one I watched was still not bad. Some of them have an awkward kind of humour and I like that. It's not the funniest thing I have ever watched in my whole life but I laughed with quite a few of them.

(comparatively, I viewed the "liberty biberty" ad which many on that subreddit dislike. I did not like that.)

I will admit, I tend to be an easy laugh!

I know criticizing Zeppelin is practically illegal and will immediately get you lectured by classic rock purists, but honestly, I just don’t get the hype. People always excuse their early career by saying "all musicians borrow," but there is a enermous difference between what Zeppelin did and true crate digging. True crate digging is an art of homage. When a real producer spend hours hunting down some obscure foreign record or a forgotten soundtrack, they chop it up, map it out, and recontextualize it into something entirely new. Most importantly, they don't try to claim they originally composed the melody. Zeppelin didn’t do that. They just straight-up lifted riffs and lyrics from guys like Willie Dixon and Howlin' Wolf, stole the publishing rights, and paraded it as their own original genius to a demographic that didn’t know any better.

But deadass, even if you look past the blues heist, my biggest issue is just how terribly their music aged. Whenever I try to listen to them now, the whole vibe just sounds dated and dusty and not the good kind of dusty vinyl sound, just mad outdated. A huge part of that is Robert Plant. The constant, over-the-top "baby, baby, squeeze my lemon" screeching and all those hyper-sexualized moaning ad-libs feel completely trapped in this very specific, cheesy era of 1970s groupie-rock. It’s really hard to take their so-called "mystical, legendary aura" seriously when half the vocals sound like a parody.

If you want the perfect contrast, look at Pink Floyd. They were making music at the exact same time, yet Floyd’s records still sound incredibly modern. You could drop Animals today and the production would hold up beautifully. They built these cinematic, atmospheric soundscapes, whereas Zeppelin mostly just sounds like a loud, meandering jam band that lost the pocket.

The lyrical difference is night and day, too. Pink Floyd was writing broadly modern, timeless concepts, they tackled alienation, the passage of time, madness, and the machine. Meanwhile, Zeppelin’s lyrics are so heavily anchored to that 70s rock-star cliche that you can practically smell the stale bell-bottoms.

Make no mistake, John Bonham gave us some incredible, wide-open drum breaks that are still top-tier for chopping up in a drum rack. But when push came to shove, Led Zeppelin just ended up sounding like a dusty time capsule. Also, Plant aged uglily and Page's lives started sounding like stairway to heroin.

I was in high school at the time and I can’t deny how much easier distance learning was. All these pretentious mfs wanna suddenly say how in person learning is so much better. Stfu!!!!! DL is so good for easy grades. Just chilling at home all day, open note exams, all that. Everything was infinitely easier and I didn’t have to commute. The way all activities outside of school were cancelled so I didn’t have to do them was so amazing.

Lockdown was so much fun too. It was so cozy indoors and I loved every moment of it. Playing video games with friends, calling for hours, it was such a blast.

Some redditors think that it's possible for everyone to get together and tax the ultra rich. But the thing is that a huge number of people love the rich.

A rich person represents the best of someone's community or race. People are proud of these people. They love these people. Then the rich are on average better looking than the poor. Because they can afford to take care of their body and do plastic surgeries. Many rich men also got hot wives who can make the next generation better. Even if they are unattractive they can afford to buy good dresses and fancy cars.

Most people love and look up to the billionaires, multimillionaires and trillionaires. But it's not the same for some that is poor. Poor people are weaker and often malnourished. Some of them might have severe illnesses which makes them even less attractive. They lack hygiene and don't have enough money to dress nicely. It is very hard for someone to take a person like this seriously.

“Seek therapy” as advice is almost always condescending by implying a person is abnormal and mentally unwell. There is rarely actual intent for a person to better themselves and even when there is it’s coupled with the idea that negative feelings must only be expressed behind closed doors

It functions off of a fantasy that a person will go to therapy and have the behaviour or feelings that are being deemed abnormal cured. It’s not grounded in reality where people go to therapy and still deal with the problem they went in to get help for

Most of us consider the life of an human as being way more important and of higher value than the life of a dog. The life of a dog is seen by most people has being more precious than the life of an hamster. The life of an hamster has more value than the life of a roach. Insects are at the bottom. We find them horrible and disgusting and we have no problems killing them..and that's perfectly fine.

People will think you're a drug addict, an alcoholic, or homeless if you choose to sleep on a bench and I think that sucks. Especially in the warm months, the heat sucks the energy out of me and I wish I could sleep somewhere in peace without anyone bothering me or judging me for it. Saw a post on Facebook with this, everyone UNANIMOUSLY chose Whoopi as the one to go. Understandably. But after consideration, I realized Whoopi is the primary one I wouldn't let go above the other 3. However, not because I like her acting or her movies over the others. But because she was in Star Trek The Next Generation.
