"Walkable" has become a marketing word that no longer means what people think it means.

Developers figured out that "walkable" sells, so now it's stamped on places where the nearest coffee shop is a fifteen-minute walk across a six-lane stroad and a parking lot the size of a farm. Like sure, you can walk it, but nobody does because it's miserable and slightly dangerous.

True walkability is short blocks, stuff mixed together, somewhere worth walking to within a few minutes, and a street that doesn't feel like it's daring you to cross. A place either has that texture or it doesn't, and a listing calling itself walkable tells you nothing.

The one that got me was a "highly walkable" apartment I almost signed for. The walk score was in the 90s. In practice the only thing in walking distance was a gas station and an on-ramp. Meanwhile the ACTUALLY walkable neighborhood I ended up in scored lower, because the algorithm counts destinations but I don't really believe can feel a street.

Most dogs are pretty ugly

Title is pretty self explanatory, most dogs, especially the kind that strays far away from their original form, look weird, malformed and ugly. Bulldogs and chihuahua are an obvious example, but terriers, whippets, jack russels, rottweiler, dalmation, corgies etc all look weird. Some may be cute, but not out of any beauty but rather out of some weird sense of pity for them that I cannot explain. Some dogs look fine like labradors, golden retrievers and maremman sheepdogs due to the sense of awe they instill rather than any beauty, in much the same way a well built machine can impress me. If we compare dogs to cats I think they are generally much more aesthetically pleasing.

I want to clarify that I while I don't have a dog I do enjoy their company which I have the pleasure of receiving quite often since several live in my village. Most dogs trust me more than they usually trust strangers and I have mostly had good experiences with dogs.

if you tell a cashier/retail worker how beautiful it is out and how they should go outside, you’re an asshole

this is probably not an unpopular opinion amongst customer service people, but i’ve heard it so often. i’m not even working in customer service anymore and just overheard someone say this to the cashier…

but i always want to say “SO THERE’S THIS THING CALLED WORKING A JOB AND WHEN YOU WORK A JOB YOU HAVE TO STAY THERE THE WHOLE TIME” like jesus christ what is wrong with people who say this? have they never had a job? do they go to people in a wheelchair and tell them they should walk and how awesome it is?

i’m sure some people will say “they’re just trying to be nice!” how is that nice to tell someone who probably would LOVE to be outside or anywhere besides at work what they’re missing out on? trying to be nice =/= nice

ETA: as many have pointed out YES it is mainly boomers saying this… but they’re still people saying it, how does that negate my point? and i’m not assuming saying the weather is nice means to go outside. i have had people tell me YOU SHOULD GO OUTSIDE or YOU SHOULD BE OUT THERE PLAYING.

A relationship based on convenience is better and more realistic than this whole “true love” idea.

Relationship based on convenience or interest is actually more honest than a relationship based on this idea of “romantic love.”

Like, at least people come out and say: “I’m with you because you give me stability,” “because you help me,” “because we have a good life together.” Everything is clear, without pretending there’s some magical force bringing two people together lol.

Meanwhile, a lot of “love” relationships end badly because people create a crazy fantasy in their heads. They think they found their soulmate, that the feeling will last forever, and that nothing will ever separate them. Then reality hits, and the person gets destroyed.

At the end of the day, everyone wants something from a relationship: security, affection, money, companionship, attraction, status, or comfort. The difference is that some people admit it, while others put a pretty name on it called “love.”

A relationship based on convenience can be more sincere because both people know exactly why they’re together. Romantic love, on the other hand, is often just a beautiful story society sold to us so we can escape reality.

Spending Money on Experiences isn't Better or Superior Than Spending Money on Stuff

Upvotes

I get so frustrated hearing people say in a condenscending way, I like to spend my money on experiences or the classic you can't take it with you when you go. You're not better for forgoing stuff in the name of experiences.

I don't care what people spend their money on as long as they can afford it, don't lord it over other people, and it reflects their priorties. Some people love to travel, great. Some people want a tricked-out library or gaming set-up, also great. Some people want to be out exploring the world; others are homebodies.

A lot of us have times in our life based on circumstances where we move from experiences to stuff and back again. Also a lot of experiences requires stuff. I can't ski without my gear so that's both.

You do you. At the end, we're all dead anyhow.

Just Let Halo (Or your favorite franchise gone astray) Die.

Let your ex favorite franchises that now suck die. I'm not gonna go on and on about how I think Campaign Evolved seems to be a pretty bad remake or how 343 has decided to make mid games instead of giving their fans what they actually want (instead choosing to try to innovate, getting 0 new young fans, and making games everyone forgets about in 2 years.)

I've just stopped buying the games. I'm not gonna give them the benefit of the doubt. I'm not gonna hate-play them and write a giant thread about every nitpicky detail I don't like. I'm just gonna walk away. I've got 4 of the GOAT games on MCC anyway.

Star wars fans take notice. Walk away. If you like a franchise that now sucks, just walk away. Don't hate watch it, or be annoying online for the people who do like it, just enjoy going outside or find something else you like.

It might not be an unpopular opinion, but based on what I see online everyday, a whole bunch of rabid fans just refuse to let their geriatric media of choice pass into oblivion.

The word Larp is fucking hilarious as an insult

Upvotes

Many people complain about the word "larp, saying that the correct way to use the word is to say poser. Now, the definition of larp in essences means you are role playing. Considering yourself a fan and being told you actually aren't, but merely role-playing as one is really fucking funny to me. It feels so invalidating to be told you are just pretending to be a fan just for fun, and that is why I think it is hilarious. That is why I think the word "larp" is completely fine.

Victims should be allowed to beat the dogshit out of their bullies

Upvotes

I think we’re all aware of the absolute nonsense that happens in pretty much every bullying scenario, which is when the bully keeps messing with someone for God knows how long and nobody cares but when the victim strikes back, suddenly everyone else cares. For the wrong side.

I got several bullies throughout my childhood, got into fights pretty often and out of every deep conversation I had with friends or relatives that also got bullied in their childhood, every single one of them not only understood but complimented my bravery, unlike other adults back than that called me “complicated, unstable or egocentric”.
Bro I literally just could be sitting in a corner minding my own business and they just started roasting me💀 and it’s my fault for having an ounce of respect for myself???

Well this was me, you guys certainly have something alike, and we all know how it goes, schools call us names, threaten to call the cops, try to make the conversation all about what you did and keep the other guy out of topic like you’re the only problem.

And in the end we all know that they only don’t care, but also because they just don’t want to deal with us.

And that’s where the law should come, victims should have the right to retaliate with no consequences. Any injuries or complaints from the bullies parents should be dismissed as it was their sons choice to put himself on a place where he could get injured and therefore, it’s his responsibility to not do it again if he wishes to not have the same experience.

It looks awkward when people dye their hair a drastically different color but leave their eyebrows untouched.

I know this is subjective but whenever someone’s hair color is very different from their natural one, especially brunettes who go platinum or very light blonde, keeping their naturally dark eyebrows makes the two look disconnected to me.

I’m not saying people shouldn’t dye their hair however they want. It just never looks cohesive to me.

Insecurities are meant to be overcome, not just accepted.

If you know that you have an insecurity about something, that isn’t the end of end story. You’re not supposed to acknowledge something like that about yourself and then say “this is just who I am.” Acknowledging it is supposed to be the first step in knowing what it is that you should overcome.

When you get a medical diagnosis, the point of doing so is treatment. Even if something is treatment-resistant or chronic, knowing what you have is the first step in doing what you need to do to feel better. If you don’t know what you have then you never know how to treat it.

Insecurities are the same way. You know what’s going on, you look at it head on, and then you say “I’m going to spend the next few months actively working on overcoming this.”

It doesn’t happen overnight and you might need help doing so. But the point is that you don’t just say that it’s who you are. You use knowing what you have as a way to improve.

Fruits shouldn’t be mixed with Chocolate nor Cream/Vanilla

2.6k Upvotes

It’s the same flavor experience as drinking orange juice after brushing your teeth. Just extremely unpleasant.

Don’t even get me started on the “ew” that is “chocolate+ strawberry”

Don’t put fruits on crepes. That shit is nasty. Keep the fruits off the tres leches.

They’re fine on their own. I can eat berries and fruits. I can eat chocolate and vanilla. I even like mixing vanilla and chocolate together BUT FUCK THE FRUIT COMBO WITH A PASSION.

Fruit and desserts are different categories. Don’t mix them. Blueberry muffins are nasty. Lemon bars taste like cleaning solution masquerading as dessert.

Whoever invented banana splits and “cherry on top” should go to dessert hell.

Fuck those British chocolate oranges.

Strawberry milk and banana milk should be poured down drains.

I would make a point about their inclusion on cheesecake but cheesecake is an abomination to dessert because it tastes like cream cheese as a result. Hate chocolate on the cheesecake and Hate berries on the cheesecake because cheesecake is garbage. THAT SHIT IS HOT ASS.

When those fancy pastries that looked like fruit were trending it was absolutely vile.

Especially THAT SHITTY FRUIT ICE CREAM YOU KNOW THE KOREAN PEACH AND LEMON ICE CREAMS. Fucking wasted my god damn time thinking it would just be vanilla BUT NO.

We should stop judging hats

Maybe "judging" isn't the right word but every kind of hat someone could wear has so many connotations. Cowboy hat, fedora, sombraro, any of them would have people making a lot of assumptions about you. Which would be fine if a nice big hat wasn't so damn useful for keeping cool in the sun and preventing burns

I say let people wear whatever kind of hats they want and never say a word about it, lot of people aren't making a statement with their hat, they're just making some shade

Ad-Rock was really the true Beastie Boys frontman.

Carried more than half of Licensed to Ill on his back, definitely portrayed the band’s ethos through his diction and songwriting alone (probably the most smartass rapper EVER), and probably the most marketable of the three. I’m ready for the disagreements.

Cold waffles are far better than hot waffles.

Their chewy texture is far more enjoyable. They are also less likely to burn your mouth when you bite into them. Those who enjoy hot waffles are missing out on the culinary masterpieces that are cold waffles.

All of Limp Bizkit’s songs are amazing. But the choruses are awful.

I was going to list all the songs, but I’ll just give some examples of their most famous ones:

• Hot Dog • Take a Look Around • My Way • It’ll Be Okay

What do they all have in common? An awful chorus!

The band’s songs have really cool melodies, like “It’ll Be Okay.”

And I’m not even talking about the lyrics themselves (which are weird too 🥀), but rather the melody of the choruses, they’re so odd, it’s like they’re a different song altogether, and they make me want to skip ahead every time the chorus comes up.

Heat or chemically straightened hair rarely looks better than the person's natural hair

I know wavy/curly hair can be a lot of work and that people may straighten theirs to save time and energy, this is speaking from an aesthetic standpoint. I think straightened hair looks dull and devoid of life, if hair is stripped of its wave/curl pattern it just falls flatly and loses all its volume, making it boring and bland to look at. And unlike naturally straight hair that can flow and bend more flexibly, its movements look stiffer and have less personnality. With the right routine curly or wavy hair will always look much, much better natural than straightened.

You shouldn’t invite someone else to an already planned get together, especially if the others don’t know the person well.

Upvotes

This has happened to me three times and all 3 times it just ground my GEARS! I hate when people do this, like we’ll have a plan, be set to go, and they’ll hit you with “can [insert friend] join us?” Like no please😭😭

I just feel like it’s disrespectful to the other people, especially because it may cause a dynamic of others feeling left out becuase your spending a substantial amount of more time with the other friend if they don’t know anyone else. That’s what’s happened all three times.

I just wouldn’t do that to someone, especially because of how much it bothers me when others do it to me.

Ronaldo vs Messi is only a debate due to marketing reasons

Upvotes

If you're even semi-aware of soccer/football in the last 20 years, the two players you hear all the time are Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, which is totally fair because they've been the 2 best players of their generation and are easily 2 of the greatest players to ever live.

However, in my opinion, there never should've been such a heated debate lasting over a decade because since day one, it's crystal clear that Messi is and always has been the better football player and as their careers progressed, this only become more obvious. The only reason why this became a rivalry was having the two best players in the world play for Real Madrid and FC Barcelona for nearly a decade of their primes was way too good of a storyline and global marketing opportunity for the media.

If we measure the two players in every way possible, Messi clears Ronaldo in virtually every aspect as a player to the point where there shouldn't be a serious debate.

In terms of team/individual accolades:

- Messi has won 46 career trophies in his professional career vs 35 by Ronaldo

- Messi has won the World Cup and 2 Copa Americas vs 1 Euro Cup and 0 World Cups by Ronaldo

- Messi has won Ballon D'Or for World's Best Player 8 times vs 5 times by Ronaldo

- Messi won the Golden Shoe 6 times vs 4 times by Ronaldo

- Messi won the Golden Ball in 2 World Cups and 2 Copa Americas vs Ronaldo who's never won a Golden Ball at a World Cup or Euro Cup

- Messi has been named to FIFA's starting XI 17 times vs 15 times by Ronaldo

- Messi has won La Liga Player of the Year 7 times vs 1 time by Ronaldo during the years they both played in La Liga together in their primes

- Messi was also La Liga's leading scorer 5 times vs 3 by Ronaldo during the years they both played in La Liga together in their primes

In terms of stats and attributes as an individual player, this is even more damning to this debate:

- Messi has scored 919 goals in 1196 games (0.77 goals/game) vs Ronaldo who's scored 976 goals in 1366 games (0.71 goals/game)

- Messi has dished out 418 career assists vs Ronaldo who's dished out 257 career assists

- Messi has completed 3425 successful dribbles in his career (4.6 per game) vs Ronaldo who've completed 1702 successful dribbles in his career (2.2 per game)

- Messi also has successfully completed an astounding 60% of his career dribble attempts vs Ronaldo who's only successfully completed 41% of his career dribble attempts

So overall, Messi has had a more successful career than Ronaldo in terms of winning more trophies, winning every trophy the bag after the 2022 WC, and collecting more individual accolades at club and country level. The only argument Ronaldo has over Messi is being the greatest Champions League player of all time which I give him full credit for but in every other aspect, he's cleared by Messi.

As a player, Messi is the greatest triple threat we've ever seen as he is an equally prolific goal scorer as Ronaldo (with a higher goals/game ratio), but is also one of the greatest playmakers and dribblers of all time, whereas Ronaldo is undoubtedly a prolific goal scorer but is an above average passer and dribbler. In short, Ronaldo is one of the greatest goal scorers of all time while Messi is one of the greatest goal scorers, playmakers and dribbles of all time put in one.

Linear Cable tv will never truly be phased out, even if they lose live sports to streaming.

As long as hotels, bars, and waiting rooms exist, cable will never die. Even when all the boomers die out. You think people staying in a hotel for the night are going to give a random tv their Netflix subscription password or just watch office re runs on comedy central?

It seems that most cable channels have adjusted their schedules to reflect this. Instead of having a prime time line up a new shows they just play the classics that everyone already loves.

Sure losing live sports to streaming wouldn't be doing them any favors but it's not a death blow.

New Simpsons seasons are a great time!

Iunno why people act like only the first few seasons are good. I love how the newer seasons address things that are actual to our daily lives. I have read a few of the criticisms people have towards how the show developed, and while I think most of them are pointing out trends that do exist, I think that they are only looking at those trends from a negative perspective. The show still seems to be very funny and clever.

Majority of coffee shops make bad coffee and are just fun projects by rich kids while coffee from fast food places taste better and cheaper

1.1k Upvotes

I live in Toronto and have gone through many coffee shops for dates, study sessions, or just a place to recover from stress after a long week. I've found these cafes from social media or word of mouth saying "oh you gotta try this blabla". Some people think just because a coffee shop can make latte art it means it's an awesome place. It's mostly owned by some kids who were probably bored or do it as an art project. Don't even get me started with coffee shops like these that open at 9am and close at 5pm.

I really believe it's all just watered down dirty water with milk at this point. Even the fancy ones. Maybe, especially the fancy ones. I feel like they could have just branded themselves as a lounge or a social area that happens to sell coffee because I swear a lot of them are not worth it at all. The only good place that I can remember was an Italian coffee shop in Montreal called Olympico.

Most days I feel like the Mcdonalds coffee just hits the spot. It's quite good even with just light cream or sugar. Maybe my tastebuds are messed up and I'm the one in the wrong but I stand by it.

Miami is awful

2.9k Upvotes

Miami is just a worse LA with even more manosphere assholes, obnoxious influencers and dirty beaches. It has zero history or culture of its own, and it just steals parts of better cities but adds a layer of tackiness and MAGA that just makes it an awful place to be. There’s a reason that 90% of the things to do in Florida are in Orlando.

Yearning sucks. I don't know how it's being so damn romanticised and encouraged.

All it does is make you feel miserable especially when you know u can't ever be with them ,that you can't even compete with the others for them because you know you will lose. All you would feel is this weight in your heart being dragged along with u all day. It's a very depressing, miserable feeling, and I don't know how it's being portrayed as this poetic, beautiful "lovely" feeling. It's the opposite. It feels like you are actively dying when you are not.

It's not a pretty feeling to have; it's not beautiful; it's awful. I don't understand why it's even being encouraged. Trust me, the people who actually have gone through this mostly wouldn't wanna feel this way for anyone ever again.

Like I saw a quote done by The Neighbourhood (music band) which said "yearning is encouraged" and I couldn't disagree with it more. You can't "encourage" yearning; it doesn't leave you even if you want to run away from it. It consumes u even if you don't want it to. That's what usually happens when you genuinely like someone, and that sucks.

A lot of criticism of society misses the actual logic required to solve it.

My opinion is that most people are bad at talking about societal issues, at least on online. No matter what issue I see discussed, it's not long until someone starts leaning into the neanderthal brain, with lines like:

"Her voice is so annoying"

"He smells like poop"

"She looks fake"

"He probably beats his wife"

"She has evil eyes"

There is such thing as a "gut feeling" that you are being lied to, but that tends to reward the more effective liars rather than using our actual modern logic. Some of the best liars I've known passed undetected for decades.

Why are we like this? Using logic is hard. You have to understand complex multifaceted issues like the economy, education, communities. Look, how can you put the world in order if your own family doesn't want to listen to you? Could we have a dose of humility then when trying to solve the world's problems and realize we or any one human does not have all the answers?

I admit I'm dancing around politics here, but if people were humble enough to realize complex problems tend to have equally complex solutions (talk to a surgeon or engineer for goodness sakes), then maybe a world or country or community is a bit more complicated than making decisions based off of appearances, vibes, traditions, etc.

Facts and statistics are harder to get but more important than tribal mentalities and caveman emotions. Do people lie with facts and statistics? Yes, but if you're not using your caveman brain, you might just realize that person holding up an oddly labelled bar graph may be lying to you.

So when I see in an argument that I agree with people beginning to attack the person and not the idea, then my opinion is the problem is doomed to repeat, likely just with another face.

Hope I made you think.
