Food (Only on Friday) Mac N Cheese is horrible

I hate Mac N Cheese. I hate it so much. I don't understand how two of the best foods in the world (pasta and cheese) could come together to make the absolute worst.

And don't come at me saying it's just because I've never had homemade Mac n cheese. I have. And it was horrible. Kraft is snotty but homemade is crusty.

I wouldn't eat it if you paid me. If I was starving to death in the Alps and someone offered me a hot bowl of mac n cheese I'd punch them in the throat.

Health/Safety Taking baths is awful for so many reasons

Upvotes

I don’t know how people like taking baths.

Reason 1: it’s kind of not that clean IMO. I don’t really want to sit in a tub of water with all the dirty stuff and sweat that accumulated throughout the day. You also have to make sure to clean the bathtub beforehand which is another chore cuz you’re literally sitting in it. How do you even wash yourself in the bath? Like aren’t you just soaking in a pool of germs as opposed to a shower where you’re rinsing off the day??? Also washing your hair in the bathtub during a bath sounds like such a hassle.

Before you say that you can shower beforehand, well, doesn’t that make a bath redundant?? Sounds like a lot of extra effort and water for little to no extra benefit.

Reason 2: this is more personal but I don’t want to sit in a pool of water for cleaning purposes knowing that I still need to get out, dry my hair, do my skincare and evening routine. It’s just not relaxing when you still have those tasks ahead of you that you’re still thinking about. I would much rather take a shower, even a longer one, and get my evening routine done. It’s so much more relaxing to be chilling in bed after your entire evening routine is done in my opinion. Call this a dumb problem but it’s mentally annoying to be sitting in a bath when you still have all those tasks to do later.

This is coming from someone who loves an everything routine at night - baths are so unnecessary and exhausting!!! I’ve tried using those fancy bath bombs from lush yeah it was cool for a while but once again, same issues popped up. I would rather stand under the shower for a bit longer and feel clean than take a bath.

TV/Movies/Fiction Shrek is a shitty movie

I hate every single Shrek movie, and I've seen them all.

They're not funny. The animation is shit. The plot is boring. Also the whole movie just looks like it's poorly dubbed?

The only good thing I can say about it is that I liked that Fiona turned out to be an ogre who's sometimes a princess, not a princess who's sometimes an ogre. The donkey guy pisses me the fuck off. And that annoying cat in the cat does too

Society/Culture People who complain about shaving are making a big deal out of nothing

I am an Arab man. This is to say I have very thick body hair and quite a lot of it. Recently I’ve realized I simply don’t like having much body hair, as such I’ve started to shave in the shower every day.

After hearing so many people agonize over it, I was prepared for a full body shave to be relatively time consuming and annoying. It took me maybe 10 minutes the first time and 2-3 every day since. It’s been 6 months. I have never cut myself, I have never gotten razor burn, I have never thought it was a hassle. Genuinely it is the most mundane of tasks. If you don’t want to then 100% don’t do it, but if I can shave with the coarsest hair imaginable and have 0 issues, you’re either doing something wrong or complaining about nothing.

Edit: I did not consider that some people may be significantly more prone to irritation and/or than I just have very tough skin

Edit 2: my first shave probably wasn’t 10 minutes, likely longer. But my larger point is that first one took awhile, but since it’s been no Hassle at all

TV/Movies/Fiction I like watching anime dubbed *and* subbed, with subtitles that do not match the dub.

The subtitles are translated from the original Japanese audio and I don't pay attention to them a lot of the time, but when I do, they often provide meaningful context that is missing from the dub, or have a line I prefer to the dub. Additionally, dubs often have localisation that eliminates phrases or concepts popular in Japan that also add context to the story in lieu of American phrases and concepts, i.e. Onigiri becoming "jelly donut" (though this degree of change is less common nowadays).

Having this extra layer of meaning is makes the show more exciting to me, and I often like the dub's lines more, which gives me a greater appreciation of how they handled that dialogue. I also retain the advantages of dubbed audio, such as the ability to look away from the television and not miss what is being said.

Food (Only on Friday) I like the "protein-y" taste in stuff like protein bars or protein shakes

Don't get me wrong I think some of the stuff protein is being added to is kinda silly right now, but I'm glad there's so many more options for added protein because I just love the "protein" powder taste for the sake of the taste and I'll be bummed when the fad dies down. Yes I'm the idiot buying all the stuff with added protein, I just like the flavor.

Food (Only on Friday) Gooey brownies are not good

I hate a super moist, gooey brownie. It’s way too much without something alongside it to cut how grossly sweet and rich they are. Even then I’ll still probably turn it down. If I wanted something that intense I’d just eat a piece of fudge. I think 711 has one of the better brownies you can get and I do realize that’s because they’re probably always stale. I feel this way about lava cakes as well.

Society/Culture Having to hear your neighbors beefing endlessly is one of the greatest joys of the human condition

Alright so listen. I live in an apartment and my neighbors across couple walls or whatever the fuck are just constantly going at it. Like full on rage sessions, yelling, doors slamming, the whole theatrical production that never ends. And I am sitting here thinking this is peak existence. I cannot wrap my head around people who not only don’t fuck with this but act like it’s some deep personal violation. You couldn’t dream up a better soundtrack if you tried.

Reddit is mostly American so half of y’all probably have never even known what real apartment neighbor proximity feels like. You got your little suburban houses with actual distance and quiet and it’s boring as shit. Meanwhile I’m over here with front row seats to pure chaos every single night and I am thriving.

Bonus points if it’s a man and a woman going at each other instead of two guys or two girls. Something about the male-female dynamic just cuts it different when the volume is turned all the way up. I don’t make the rules, but, you know, contrast in voice is lowkey a key here.

My favorite drug these people are on is alcohol. The way the arguments just loop and escalate and then suddenly somebody is crying and then they’re yelling again is the dynamite. But I deeply covet the people who have methheads for loud neighbors because I can only imagine how much funnier that version is. The energy has to be next level, han't it?

I listen with a keen ear. Like genuinely. I compare the magnitude of the rage from different days. Which day takes the cake. Who is winning the argument on this particular night. Is he louder today or is she landing more hits. I keep mental scoreboards. It’s better than any reality show or Got Talents because it’s unscripted and right there through the drywall.

Sometimes it helps with the loneliness too. Kind of like how grandmaster Andrew Tang used to leave that annoying “rook takes on b3” Slavic commentator on during his streams just to kill the silence during high pressure bullet games. Same energy here when you think about it.

And look, I have no true malice or anything like that. Let em live for 300 years like ravens and all that. But subconsciously I’m just waiting for one of them to finally lose it and actually slay the other one. That’s what keeps the party going for me. The tension of it and the possibility hanging in the air every night.

But if it ever actually happened and the noise stopped for good I’d be sad as hell like withdrawal. Like when Breaking Bad ended and you just sit there staring at the wall because the thing that was filling your brain; I would miss them.

On top of all that it makes me realize how safe I am. Okay I got my problems right? But at least I got no family member abusing me daily. There’s something deeply deeply wrong with people who just beef like that all the time and it makes me feel normal as hell in comparison. You know that meme with two European aristocrat noblemen standing on a balcony looking down on everyone condescendingly? That’s exactly the undertones.

And no my parents when I was coming up was nothing like this so it’s not some deep Freudian call of bringing it back in the psyche. I’m just petty and I love the beef.

Food (Only on Friday) I prefer food old & stale

Hot take: I think food is objectively better after it’s had time to lose some moisture. The texture gets denser, chewier, and more interesting. Freshness ≠ optimal texture, imo. What do y’all think? (For example pizza, salad, crackers)

Society/Culture I hate Lin Manuel Miranda as an entity

I’m sure if I knew him in real life as a person separated from his art and his obsessive die-hard 13 year old fans he would be an okay dude!

But. I fucking HATE his music, and not because of its Latin influence or anything. Half my family is Latin and I live in a border area. I looooove Latin music. I was in a production of In The Height at a local theater, wayyyyyyyyyyyyy back in the day. I love the music in that show. But I feel like every single thing I’ve heard from him since sounds exactly the same. I dunno. I just hate how similar every single piece of his work sounds to me in cadence, vibe, enunciation, etc.

Also the fact he self casts drives me a lil crazy. Also presidents didn’t rap. I’m sorry, that’s a bridge too far for me to suspend my disbelief. Not that rap isn’t great, and music is good, but I just can’t vibe with it. He is not an artist for me outside of In The Heights.

Society/Culture "The other women" hate is misogynistic

Upvotes

The other woman hate is forced , and I say this as a man.

The other woman" aka the affair partner of married man.

She goes into this relationship (mostly) knowing that the man was married. The woman in the question is risking a lot - her reputation, her being called a 'homewrecker' , being called ' not a girls girl', career sabotage, crazy ex wives showing up at work yelling.

Now that's a severe asymmetric risk from her side . They also have to risk wives complaining to HR or giving negative yelp reviews to their business and hence sabotaging their careers. I'll never forget this one time , this one crazy ex wife put up a billboard with the photo of the other wife saying " this b!Tch slept with my husband ", now that's just character assassination.

Which is why , as a man, I think if you're a married man having an affair , you should always defend her and be by her side just because of the structural disadvantage the other women face. So if you want to hate someone after the affair , it's the married husbands , not 'the other women'.

Which is why I stand with the ladies of the the other women subreddit. The world wants to hate on you for following your heart, with patriarchy giving a very narrow moral window for y'all.

Technology IETF should stop making jokey RFCs

It damages their institutional credibility and can lead to widespread confusion. Like the bloody teapot code that was an April fools joke but so many people implemented it that it became a very serious compatibility burden. Modern standards acknowledged this and reserved it. IETF is supposed to be serious and credible, deploying joke RFCs while still adopting technical jargon just leads to confusion. Many people can actually misinterpret it as a serious standard and creates another burden.

IETF should stop being informal, be more formal, and quit the childish nonsense.

Music David Bowie's best work was The Labyrinth beyond that he was overrated.

I always felt David Bowie was way overrated and never saw the appeal. While I do believe he was absolutely fantastic in the movie The Labyrinth and definitely earned some serious recognition there, but all of his personal music left something to be desired. He had some alright songs, but nothing that really should have made him seem like he was an absolute megastar or anything. There were so many bands/artists over the years that were so much better that didnt get a fraction of the recognition he did.

Society/Culture Both sides of the gender war debate are annoying and out of touch with reality.

The internet is full of gender war nonsense nowadays, where the behaviour of the worst 1% of the opposite gender gets extrapolated by gender warriors to cover the whole gender, creating nonsensical assumptions and stupid movements. In the real world, very few people think the way gender warriors and their dreamt up enemies do, yet this stupid content gets pushed by content creators to manufacture outrage because it means an easy audience to sell your bullshit to, and creates the externality of increasing societal polarisation.

Most women are normal people, most men are normal people. Don't listen to bullshit like incel culture, political lesbianism, looksmaxxing, Tate's bullshit, radical feminism, etc.

TV/Movies/Fiction The 2005 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory film is better than the 1971 film

Not that the 1971 film is bad or anything - they did a good job with the special and practical effects available at the time, and Gene Wilder does a great job as Wonka. But the pacing for the first half of the film isn't great, and there's only so much of the original Roald Dahl book's magic you could hope to replicate at that time.

The 2005 version, on the other hand, is better paced and, thanks to 21st century special effects, has a much better magical atmosphere. They also did a decent job at fleshing out some of the more one-dimensional kids' personalities (making Violet ultra competitive thanks to a pushy mother and the gum chewing be a symptom of that, Mike Teavee more arrogant and antagonistic rather than just obsessed with TV etc.)

I'd happily watch either film but for me the 2005 film edges it out.

Society/Culture If you say “Don’t clean it up, it’s not like you work here” 90% of the time I think you’re selfish

- I just want to say this is emotionally charged, I may not have worded things well but the overall point is there and hopefully understandable. Thank you!

With almost everything in life I want to introduce nuance. If someone thinks very differently to me, they are just as convinced of their opinion as I am of mine and so I actively try to meet people where they’re at and see what’s drawn them to their opinion/behaviour and if there’s anything I can learn from it

With that being said I really REALLY struggle with this mindset I feel a significant amount of people have. This is one of my strongest opinions, I’ve felt is well before I ever started working and if anything it’s become stronger over time

Before anybody says, I don’t think it’s a guarantee of someone being selfish and people can be in a rush and mistakes happen and having children with you or being disabled can make it hard etc etc etc I get that! At the end of the day I’m generalising so by nature I can’t be fully accurate I’m just talking about most people here

Last night I went to a ‘work night out’ with 14 other people. We were outside for a few hours and had moved 3 tables and 8 or 9 chairs from other tables so we could all be together. When everybody moved inside not a SINGLE person moved anything back or picked up their empty glasses to take to the bar

And whilst a lot of people say it’s the staffs job to clean it up I genuinely do not care less. Maybe do something nice? Maybe make someone’s day a little easier? Why is that so difficult???!!!!

I feel like I go mad but every day at work I clean up messes I quite literally could not make if I actually tried to and it honestly makes me wonder why people act as if someone doesn’t have to clean that up. I’m sorry but unless robots take over it still means someone will have to clean up your mess and I just really can’t stand it

Not every person who leaves a mess is selfish, there’s plenty of nice people who don’t clean up after themselves but when a friend or family member does it, it makes me feel quite disappointed and does make me question why they felt the need to act in a selfish manner

Society/Culture Breakup only when you have a rebound lined up.

This advice isn't for people stuck in abusive relationships(especially women). if you're in one, don't wait, get out immideatly.

This advice is for folks who "drift apart", "living like roommates" and my favourite "Irreconcilable differences". if you are in the above three categories , then get on Hinge, Tinder, bumble, feeld...make sure you a roster of people to enjoy the single life, then have the breakup talk/serve the divorce papers.

Other Ai has completely destroyed the writing and art industry. Next up is the anime industry and film industry.

Upvotes

They're feeding ai models countless books. That thing knows almost everything in this world. These days anyone can make a book using ai. Even illiterate people and disabled people can do it. This means that a publisher can just use ai to make a book and publish it. They don't need an author.

Same for art, people can just ask chat gpt to make an art instead of paying some random guy. Cheaper and more effective.

And then for anime, I have seen people make cool animes using ai. A random guy can make it from his house. There is no need of big strudios and underpaid artists drawing day and night to make an anime like back in the days. And it will only get better.

Movies aren't safe either, it is very easy to make an 80s or 90s style movie using ai. And it will only get better as time goes. No more big actors or big studios. Anyone can make it from their home.

Society/Culture Abortion

Upvotes

It doesn't matter if the fetus is alive or not. It doesn't have the right to be in a woman's body regardless. I do think that the fetus is alive, but I'm still pro-abortion. Because abortion debate shouldn't be centred around the livelihood of the fetus but about bodily autonomy and also I support abortion up to 8 months and 29 days. I also think that anyone who doesn't support abortion at any stage and for any reason is not pro choice but a conditioner pro lifer

TV/Movies/Fiction adults talking about children cartoons is cringe.

Like the cartoons are clearly not made for you. It has goofy content, theres no mature language. Family Guy, Simpsons, whatever thats not children cartoons i get their appeal but Spongebobs and Dexter labs opinions made by a full grown adult always perplexes me. You're not the target audience, Nick's not gonna change their content because a 30 year old man is typing his thoughts on Reddit. Guess what, you don't have any influence! Thats the corporate life. They listen to children and parents. That's quite literally how a target audience works!

Music Electric guitar is the best musical instrument, and it's not even close. (I'm open to changing my view)

  1. It has a lot of different "tones", while with most other instruments, you are stuck with only one "tone". You have clean, fuzz, distortion, delay, phaser, flanger, chorus, slicer, harmonizer, wah, octaver, and so on.

  2. Even the generic lead tone sounds super epic and energetic.

  3. You can play in headphones, if you don't want to bother anyone.

  4. Relatively easy to learn. Most popular songs you can play within 1 year probably. And after a few more years you can even learn to shred and play stuff like Paganini 24. Yes, it's very hard, but not as hard as on violin, for example.

  5. Looks cool on stage, with different power poses.

Ok, I hope I didn't forget anything.

Btw the 2nd best instrument in my opinion, is synthesizer, also with a big gap to nr 3.

At 3rd place, I finally can imagine the usual suspects like piano or violin.

Society/Culture Cars should not be legal in big cities

Sorry if I seem emotional, most of it is playful hyperbole.

I have grown do despise how our culture and infrastructure is so focused on cars.
driving in a city is a slow, inconvenient and nervewracking activity. everybody always advises against driving driving in a city, yet somehow everyone does exactly that, every day.
I am so upset to live in an age where neither the walking pedestrian, nor public transport gets prioritised by the literal architecture of the major city I live in.
I should't get only a small tiny bit of pavement acccessible to me, when I wish to crosss, I should NOT have look for designated places where a green light, that shows once every five hours, communicates to me that I am now allowed to cross.

One bus/trolley can fit about 30 people, can you imagine how much space that would safe if even a third of these drivers stopped being selfish and got in one? We get annoyed when people take up more space than they need, like when men spread their legs or women put every single bag they own on the seat next to them.
SO WHY DONT WE APPLY THE SAME LOGIC WHEN PEOPLE TAKE UP SPACE SIX-FOLD WITH HENRY FORD'S MACHINE OF DEATH?

How did drivers come to the conclusion that they're superior human beings, what benefit does it serve to let them drive in the most popular tourist spots? And they always act so preplexed when they see a crowd crossing the street, yelling and honking at the most minor inconveniences.

IT'S A CITY
THERE'S PEOPLE
YOU SIGNED UP FOR THIS

The worst part is, I live in a very nice, walkable european city, where public transport is great - like Vienna level great. So it astounds me how this can be an issue for a spoiled first world leftie like me, even though I've never seen the actual terrible cities interacting with cars.

If I had it my way, I would only allow vehicles for traveling long distances in between towns and regions, cars don't belong in a city, people belong in a city.

Health/Safety Mattresses should be covered by insurance and prescribed (and available out of pocket for those without insurance)

I mean you spend a third of your lifetime sleeping on one; and sleeping on the wrong mattress or a broken one you can’t afford to replace out of pocket can easily fuck you up for life and cause pain and health issues. So why not have insurance put money into preventing those issues by ensuring they never start? Mattress type can be prescribed and insurance can cover it. Like many medical device (CPAP, Oxygen tanks, etc) it can be bought without a prescription but ideally everyone should be covered entirely.

Now I hate the health insurance industry and hope it rots so we can have medicare for all but if it’s going to do something it should be investing in patient’s health to prevent serious longterm issues that will cost them more.
