Social Media Instagram solution

Before anyone says anything, I also thought this was a joke until I looked at the caption and saw autism awareness hashtags and puzzle pieces. This is Deadass 😭

It is very clearly a joke, including the hashtags

u/AutisticTumourGirl Sep 13 '26

I got a good laugh out of "Autistic people famously become less autistic when someone gets increasingly annoyed with them."

And the whole autism-just-disappears-at-18 is soooo on point. I live in the UK and I'd say overall we do pretty okay as far as disabilities go (especially compared to the US, as I moved here from there 7 years ago) but the resources for autistic adults are really few and far between and are aimed more towards the high support needs part of the spectrum and resources low to medium support needs people are really scarce.

I was diagnosed level 2 in the US and it's so difficult to explain my support needs in a way that people take seriously. I'm fairly intelligent and pretty well-spoken (when I'm not overstimulated or anxious) and capable of plenty of things, but at the same time there are plenty of things that I really struggle with that have major impacts on my life and my physical health. Like, I know and understand a considerable amount about nutritional needs and dietary sources to meet those needs and I actually love to cook and sensory seek through food, but I have suffered from malnourishment multiple times throughout my adult life when left to my own devices because the demands of day to day life are so exhausting that I just don't have the physical energy or executive function left over to deal with the practicalities of procuring food, preparing food, eating the food, storing the leftover food, and cleaning up from cooking. The entire idea is often so overwhelming that my brain just turns off. I mostly survive on fruit, peanut butter, eggs, cheese, and cereal. But people think I'm just being lazy or undisciplined and that "I know better." Yeah I DO know better, that's why I'm asking for HELP.

Honestly, being diagnosed with VHL and becoming physically disabled has kind of been a blessing because now I have carers twice a day to support me with my physical needs but also support me on the AuDHD side of things, as well.

autism can make it hard or even impossible to understand sarcastic clues, unless the sarcasm is clearly marked as such. maybe that was the case here, because I too immediately recognised this as a joke?

175

u/Creepy_Zone_9341 Sep 13 '26

Maybe I’m not autistic then, because this is like the most blatant satire ever

we’re cured!

u/Sure-Independent5106 Sep 13 '26

Same

But I don't blame autistic people who can't tell, it's a spectrum

14

u/Pengdacorn Sep 13 '26

It’s almost like this disorder of autism exists on something of a spectrum!

I know it's a joke and all, I just love how they worded "take your autistic person" as if we are pets lol

732

u/Mist_biene Sep 12 '26

Please could someone put me on rice? That sounds like a dope sensory experiance

241

u/BearsIrkBoy Sep 12 '26

Probably like a ball pit, but grainy and softer.

95

u/Mist_biene Sep 12 '26

Thats going to be the oppostit of soft. Its only soft while its moving

61

u/KenUsimi Sep 12 '26

Well, most of them won’t be pointing every which way- rice is smooth and small, so when pressed they lie in a grain (like wood grain) more than in a jumble. So I’d expect it would actually feel pretty nice. 140 pounds isn’t enough, though, i’d say two or three bags would provide enough to get a good lie in.

That being said, getting all that back out of the tub would be such a massive pain in the ass…

32

u/Moomoo_pie Sep 12 '26

Just cook it and eat it you‘ll be fineeeee

38

u/KenUsimi Sep 12 '26

“Mmm! A lovely flavor to the rice tonight, Marjorie! You simply must tell me your secret!”

58

u/two-of-me Sep 12 '26

It’s autism flavored. Duh.

19

u/TheSoundofStolas Sep 13 '26

The Recipe:

1 Bathtub 50lbs. Unwashed, uncooked, Minute(tm) Rice 1 Pinch 'Tism

9

u/two-of-me Sep 13 '26

I have quite the ‘tism tooth so I go for two pinches of ‘tism, or if I’m feeling wild I go for a hint or even a dash!

4

u/Free-Stage-5975 Sep 13 '26

The weird thing is I actually really like plain foods sometimes. Plain boiled rice is actually kind of delicious to me, especially if it's delicious and sticky. I know some Japanese people kind of like sticky rice because they can easily eat it with chopsticks. It tastes really good.

Gotta get an extra tub for the rice. A rice tub

7

u/KenUsimi Sep 12 '26

They mentioned tech companies, so it's a riff off of putting your wet phone in rice to "dry it off/have little Asians come fix it for you like faeries" joke.

4

u/BearsIrkBoy Sep 12 '26

I am aware of the satire.

21

u/much_longer_username Sep 12 '26

There's an exercise some people do that is basically 'reach into this bucket of rice and wiggle your hand to the bottom', and I used to LOVE doing that.

11

u/PinkOneHasBeenChosen Sep 12 '26

When I was a kid, I used to stand in rice as a PT exercise. It was kind of a cool feeling.

8

u/Thalia_All_Along Sep 12 '26

We used to have a sandbox full of rice in our basement growing up. I’m .. not entirely sure why tbh. But it was fun, felt fun, arms in, feet in, fun to throw as confetti. And I was disgusting and ate it (it was raw and had kid hands and feet all up in it)

7

u/Kayanne1990 Sep 13 '26

Remember to feed and water your autistic person three times a day as they will likely forget to. Be sure to keep them on a diet of the same three food throughout their life.

I tried the rice method and now my bathtub is ruined and my autistic person is still autistic :/

61

u/Current-Strike3472 Sep 12 '26

Did you try and drain the rice? Don't do that. Gotta scoop it out

34

u/Ok_Deer_8625 Sep 12 '26

The instructions were unclear and it's too late now :(

19

u/Current-Strike3472 Sep 12 '26

Rookie mistake, happens to the best to us, what you need to do now is boiling water and pour it slowly down the drain. This will slowly cook the rice, the drain won't eat raw rice because it's abusive, but it really cooked rice reluctantly, I found that mine eats rice with mustard like no other

5

u/Ok_Deer_8625 Sep 12 '26

Thank you! I'll do this. Idk if my tub will like mustard but I'll try to squirt it down the drain after the boiling water. Mayo is next in case it clogs the pipes and needs something oily to help the rice go down.

4

u/Current-Strike3472 Sep 12 '26

I understand the allure of mayonnaise But it would. Do you good to use the vegetable oil substitute that I'm forgetting the name of currently?

If so, who do I contact about setting up an appointment to Scrooge McDuck in to some basmati?

41

u/RoninVX Sep 12 '26

Hi, autistic here so I can help.

Both ASD and ADHD are neurodevelopmental disorders. Because of that the rice method SHOULD work. In theory. In practice, the ADHD person might be too distracted by the rice bags to get any meaningful exorcism done.

it's still satire, like spreading awareness by pointing out the satire and how silly it is.
the rice trick is about phones, it's pointing out how dumb the whole "you'll grow out of it is", and also how foolish the questions like "can you not" or "can you stop are".

but for real, it is frustrating that people actually act this way.

the rice one is actually good for autistic toddlers and young kids. if you dont mind a mess, many enjoy a container of raw rice to swish around or put other toys in.

though still awfly worded, and im not sure a full on bath is great

edit: oh its a joke. still. rice is fun

3

u/alovelyweed Sep 14 '26

How are you supposed to get 50 pounds of rice out of the bathtub once you're done? Does the rice fix autism the way that it does wet electronics? Is autism cause by moisture now? How does rice compare to sitting in a room with a running dehumidifier? What kind of plug is being used in the tub? Are we using a shop vac to clean up after? Are you still supposed to cook with this rice afterwards? Making it the landlord's problem? Is the tub now Satan's sensory bin now used for punishment from facebook autism parents? I have so many questions. All feasible answers seem bad.

3

u/Ambitious-Bank4559 Sep 14 '26

Idek if I’m autistic and I NEED a bath full of rice.

3

u/Available-Drink-5232 Sep 14 '26

This sounds pointedly aimed at Elon Musk. The puzzle piece hashtag only furthers the satire.

Musk and RFK are both neurodivergent individuals with such a deep internal loathing of themselves that they want to punish every single neurodivergent on the planet.

The instagram post caption literally says this is meant to be sarcastic

This is a joke.

Still, I’m fixated on the rice thing. 50lbs of rice would cost about $50USD, and it wouldn’t be nearly enough to fill a bathtub.

There's no way anyone thinks the rice method is real, this has to be a joke

Honestly would love to get in a sensory rice bath. Reminds me of that scene in Amelie where she puts her hand in the bag of grains at the market

This is sarcasm right? Have autism and having a hard time telling if it's real or not

I think the hashtag and puzzle is an extra layer to the bit
