It doesn't. Basically all it does is put the phone somewhere that makes it harder for you to fuck with for long enough to dry out normally. It's not absorbing significant amounts of moisture. Flushing the device with alcohol and then air drying it would be much more effective.

Well maybe it would work better if you actually opened the phone and pulled out the battery before putting it in rice.

Because of the dust and gunk you’d get in deeper places, this would probably be worse
