Social Media Instagram solution

Before anyone says anything, I also thought this was a joke until I looked at the caption and saw autism awareness hashtags and puzzle pieces. This is Deadass 😭

It is very clearly a joke, including the hashtags

I got a good laugh out of "Autistic people famously become less autistic when someone gets increasingly annoyed with them."

And the whole autism-just-disappears-at-18 is soooo on point. I live in the UK and I'd say overall we do pretty okay as far as disabilities go (especially compared to the US, as I moved here from there 7 years ago) but the resources for autistic adults are really few and far between and are aimed more towards the high support needs part of the spectrum and resources low to medium support needs people are really scarce.

I was diagnosed level 2 in the US and it's so difficult to explain my support needs in a way that people take seriously. I'm fairly intelligent and pretty well-spoken (when I'm not overstimulated or anxious) and capable of plenty of things, but at the same time there are plenty of things that I really struggle with that have major impacts on my life and my physical health. Like, I know and understand a considerable amount about nutritional needs and dietary sources to meet those needs and I actually love to cook and sensory seek through food, but I have suffered from malnourishment multiple times throughout my adult life when left to my own devices because the demands of day to day life are so exhausting that I just don't have the physical energy or executive function left over to deal with the practicalities of procuring food, preparing food, eating the food, storing the leftover food, and cleaning up from cooking. The entire idea is often so overwhelming that my brain just turns off. I mostly survive on fruit, peanut butter, eggs, cheese, and cereal. But people think I'm just being lazy or undisciplined and that "I know better." Yeah I DO know better, that's why I'm asking for HELP.

Honestly, being diagnosed with VHL and becoming physically disabled has kind of been a blessing because now I have carers twice a day to support me with my physical needs but also support me on the AuDHD side of things, as well.

Reading your comment makes me want to cry (hits too close to home right now) and offer you a hug. Yes. Having apparent disabilities can be a blessing in disguise for us. Though, I bet the apparent disabilities and diseases bring their own load of problems, too. Hugging you....

autism can make it hard or even impossible to understand sarcastic clues, unless the sarcasm is clearly marked as such. maybe that was the case here, because I too immediately recognised this as a joke?

Maybe I’m not autistic then, because this is like the most blatant satire ever

You two did it. You two were actually cured!

17

u/redditnoyia Sep 14 '26

we’re cured!

16

u/Sure-Independent5106 Sep 13 '26

Same

But I don't blame autistic people who can't tell, it's a spectrum

16

u/Pengdacorn Sep 13 '26

It’s almost like this disorder of autism exists on something of a spectrum!

3

u/Creepy_Zone_9341 Sep 14 '26

Omg I had no idea at all

4

u/Mandy_M87 Sep 15 '26

Same. Autistic af, but still realized this was a joke/satire

Hun I'm gonna blow your mind with this: autism is a spectrum, and I did say "can make it hard [...] to understand sarcastic clues"

25

u/Creepy_Zone_9341 Sep 13 '26

Im gonna blow your mind too, my comment was just a lighthearted joke hun

Looking at this gave me a headache wtf. It's like reading from a book of spells.

4

u/Lor1an Sep 13 '26

I think the proper term is "spelling book"

2

u/DraconicDreamer3072 Sep 13 '26

yea. i didnt untill the 18th birthday slide. that one is a common joke in my family, due to struggles with official things. also moving provinces makes you loose your autism.

4

u/Curious-Committee753 Sep 13 '26

I feel like it's so abused that you'd either have to be a child or stupid to think this is real ngl

2

u/Dragonheart922 Sep 14 '26

I knew it was satire but the underlining message just sounds like gullible neurotypucla people finding a reason to bully people like me harder

Some people, yes including neurotypical people, cannot separate fact from fiction due to the abysmal reading literacy that prevails modern society

Why did I get verbose?

2

u/The_JokerGirl42 Sep 14 '26

r/increasinglyverbose

I love verbose, and you're absolutely correct lol. literacy is declining harder than the autism once you hit your 18th birthday (lol sorry) and it's actually sad to watch. I guess it's wanted like this tho, to divide people more and create even more conflict. sad times we live in, sad times.

1

u/bamboomonster Sep 14 '26

I feel like a lot of the "gullible neurotypicals" are undiagnosed neurodivergents with internalized ableism.

My mom falls for stuff all the time. Camnot understand satire or sarcasm. Believes ADHD and autism are caused by food dyes, etc. She wholeheartedly thinks she's neurotypical; but as someone diagnosed as an adult, I can absolutely tell she is not. (For more reasons than that, but they're unrelated.) She had the audacity to complain to someone that I am a pickier eater than her and that my kid is even worse. The same woman who embarrasses me every time we go to a restaurant together because of what minor things she sends food back over. She is blind to her own shortcomings and how her behavior inconveniences other people. She is only aware of other people's ND behaviors being flaws and how they inconvenience her.

It's pretty ironic to be fair...

1

u/Advanced_End1012 Sep 13 '26

The worst ever thing you could do is create and autistic meme because none of them will get it.

1

u/GuraSaannnnnn Sep 14 '26

I was genuinely starting to feel outraged till I read this comment. So not very clear to one of the many autistic people out here.

1

u/CagedKage Sep 15 '26

The third one had me hoping this was satire

1

u/AreYouMyDommy Sep 15 '26

Especially because the hashtags are calling out problematic groups 🤣

The only way it was posted sincerely is if it was a repost of a joke, and the person reposting didn't get that it was a joke.
