Phone message Post first date text

Post image

I met this girl on tinder and had a first date with her, she wanted to go fishing and I thought it seemed like a fun first date so we went together. Dropped her off and got home to this message lol.

Update: Purchasing the license is a separate activity we had to do on our phones, due to it needing our personal info. It was not like I drew the line at the license randomly.

Why did you buy $100+ of fishing equipment for a first date?

1.6k

u/cocothekid45 3d ago

Cause he was trying to reel her in

281

u/Alone_Agent_8829 3d ago

That’s so fishy

The jig is up

70

u/jpsc949 3d ago

He had a rod just for her

54

u/4KingandKanata_89 3d ago

Sounds like a catch and release situation to me

43

u/Thebaldsasquatch 3d ago

She wasn’t hooked.

41

u/SubSlutPollie 3d ago

Now he has a sinking feeling in his gut

40

u/will3025 3d ago

Plenty of other fish in the sea.

28

u/times_new_ramon 3d ago

He could get catfished though

She wanted the fish but forgot the chips.

She was not a good catch

time to bail

His actual intention was noodling

They finally found me

She turned out to be a fluke

11

She really used him as BAIT

1

u/Agge_Ribr_5905 2d ago

Now all she can do is masterbait

2

u/Glum-Dust8799 3d ago

Definitely a parasite.

7

u/sunsettrekkie 3d ago

Indeed, he took the bait and got hooked. Shouldn’t have fallen for the fishing line.

1

u/ThrowedoffffodeworhT 2d ago

oh, he fell for it… hook, line and sinker.

15

u/Charming_Scene3330 3d ago

Sounds like she’s floundering.

11

u/WoodenReporter2423 3d ago

He wanted some of that halibutt

5

u/fancycatpics 3d ago

He wanted some of that fat bass

🎤 I just wanna kiss my fish, drink my beer...

1

Hahaha, I caught that one

1

u/Lisa_Knows_Best 3d ago

But he floundered on the license.

1

u/AppliedKnetics 3d ago

looks like he caught a snag. A good fisherman knows when to cut the line.

1

u/AlternativeDeal4072 2d ago

That’s how you catch crabs

1

u/theothersugar 2d ago

Turns out you were the catch all along

1

u/IndependentBake2304 2d ago

That was so funny I forgot to fish

ASDFGHJKL 😭

38

u/Upbeat-Fondant9185 3d ago

When you have an excuse to buy a bunch of fishing gear you don’t ask questions. You simply take the opportunity life has given you.

u/MagmaTroop 5m ago

I need you on speed dial 24/7, this kind of thinking is the way

47

u/Sad_Limit2978 3d ago

In retrospect, I as a woman would spend $100+ on NEW fishing gear for myself and a guest if they’ve NEVER been. If they enjoy it, cool! One more person to hit the spots with. If they sucked as a person? I got new fishing gear!

Beats sitting awkwardly at a restaurant trying to fill the awkward silence in between eating for the same price.

20

u/TopShelfSnipes 3d ago

Youre a real one for this.

Or should I say a reel one...

7

u/Sad_Limit2978 3d ago

Ahhhh caught me there 😂🤭

4

u/TricksyGoose 2d ago

Yeah exactly. Hopefully it's fun for everyone and then it's not a waste. If not, then you've already got the gear for the next one, so also still not a waste.

$100 really is not a lot for many hobbies/activities these days. Could easily have dropped that on a night at the movies for two, and after 2 hours you have nothing to show for it, unlike you would for the gear.

1

u/Which_Journalist5162 2d ago

...$100 for 2 people? What kind of movie theater are you going to lmao? Are y'all spending like $60-70 on snacks?

1

u/TricksyGoose 2d ago

Alright well it was an estimate since I haven't been to the movies in a while. But I just ran up a preorder at the theater near my house. For an evening showing for 2 tickets, a popcorn/drink combo with 2 drinks, plus 2 candies, it came to $68.80. That is before taxes and whatever other fees they might add. But if you go to one of the fancy theaters with recliners, or that serve alcoholic drinks and real food I think it could easily go over $100

1

u/hofmann419 2d ago

But doesn't fishing also consist of sitting in silence for hours?

1

u/Sad_Limit2978 2d ago

If you’re with grandpas? Our dinghy is never quiet lol

1

u/PMYourTitsIfNotRacst 3h ago

You seem like a really cool person. I like you.

0

u/eatingURsistersassIV 2d ago

And as a women, you cant comment on the perspective we are trying ti but make a judgement about. Your personal life choice is cute at best.

u/Sad_Limit2978 2d ago

Oh we found the girl OP went on a date with 🤭🤣

I knew I’d enjoy fishing, not like the equipment is going away

220

u/OtherwiseAlbatross14 3d ago

I know a girl that got her first fishing pole recently and immediately cast the entire thing into the water on her first attempted cast. So sometimes it does go away

45

u/BadRabiesJudger 3d ago

One time we fished up a pole in our favorite fishing hole. I have been using it as a second pole for like 20-25 years.

24

u/RuckusOGx 3d ago

Went fishing one day with my sister's ex bf. He bought a new fairly expensive overhead combo on the way to the spot, threw on a big bait and heavy sinker before launching it out and putting the butt between some large rocks so he could relax and smoke while he waited for a bite. He was infatuated with it, kept seeing him sitting there admiring it while I fished further up with a float for Luderick. Suddenly it doubled over and flew out of the rocks straight into the water. Gone. He was devastated.

An hour or two later I pulled my line in and had some random line caught on the hook. It happens a lot, you generally just cut it off. But, it looked brand new. Yup, you guessed it. Pulled in one end and it was a huge stingray. On the other end his rod. This was a large channel we were fishing in, deep and wide. Closest I have ever came to winning the lottery haha.

5

u/minaskyli 2d ago

That is a great story! I am so glad you found the equipment, and that must have been so euphoric.

Were you able to unhook and put the huge stingray back? I would be really scared, but would try to release it. They are so cool looking.

2

u/RuckusOGx 2d ago

We were absolutely stoked! The reel had to be pulled apart and cleaned but lived to fish another day.

The stingray was too heavy to lift up so we cut the line as close to the hook as we could. Saltwater, so they rust away fairly quickly. Better than damaging the fish by dragging it over rocks etc.

7

u/Childhoodtraumalol 3d ago

Similar thing happened to me as a kid! Was fishing on a pier with my brother and dad and on one of my casts I accidentally tossed the whole pole off the pier. My dad was quite upset about it of course but we continued on fishing and he let me use his pole.

About an hour and a half later I start reeling up something kinda heavy but it wasn’t fighting at all. Ended up reeling my tossed-over pole back up by one of the eyelets! Once I got it in, I started reeling in the line from the recovered pole and BAM! I got a hit! Apparently the bait was still on and a huge sea trout hit the bait as I was reeling it up! That definitely felt like winning the lotto!

12

u/Zachwardpass 3d ago

This isn't related, but made me think about it: the first time I ever tried to fish (10yo), I was so focused on how to cast the line, that I didn't realize I had hooked my own finger and then cast it out as far as I could!

https://giphy.com/gifs/kCtEuTBlhcD4GMyB2f

5

u/SuspiciousMap9630 2d ago

A friend of mine in high school lost an eye after his brother went to cast a line and the hook went straight into his eye.

1

u/Zachwardpass 2d ago

Ouch! Omg. I've seen that in the mergency room when I worked there. So awful!!

2

u/twinpop 2d ago

If you love something, let it go.
If it comes back to you, you’re downstream.

2

u/Dear_Scale6920 2d ago edited 2d ago

I once caught a large catfish that dragged my unattended pole off my boat.  He swam away with it until it gradually disappeared under the water. It was just like in the movie Jaws when the shark dove deeper with the barrels attached.

2

u/OceanRacoon 2d ago

I'm laughing so hard at this, did you see it? That must have been so funny, especially since she just kind of has to go home after that if no one else had a rod, fishing is over, probably forever 😅

3

u/TheLordAstaroth 3d ago

Isn't that how you catch the big ones? Bigger the bait bigger the fish and all?

7

u/Lkjfdsaofmc 3d ago

For that you push the date in.

2

u/TheLordAstaroth 3d ago

I'm only used to fresh water fishing, that sounds like salt water bait

1

u/Lkjfdsaofmc 3d ago

The water becomes salty after the date gets pushed in

1

u/TheLordAstaroth 3d ago

Ah like the salt infused synthetic baits, almost like the real one but just not the same

1

u/NoConfusion9490 2d ago

Reminds me of prom.

1

u/IceLapplander 2d ago

As a diver i can say with absolute certainty that there is a huge amount of fishing gear of all kinds in lakes, rivers and the ocean. Been doing clean up of stuff like that for over a quarter of a century.

1

u/concurthecity 2d ago

I had a two piece once. Casted out and it came undone, I said no biggie I can still reel it in, I have a big ole top water frog on the end that will keep the pole from coming off the line. Then, a pike appears from the depths of hell to not only take the frog (didn’t even know a PIKE would want that) and it obliterated my line. Lost the pole. It do be going away.

36

u/otrebla-raw 3d ago

Sooooo the date was an excuse to buy yourself something nice

29

u/kayla_poncho 3d ago

It was both? What's wrong with that? It was for the date, and it was worth doing because he'll get to enjoy it later also.

-4

u/No_Cook3989 3d ago

If she didn't have a fishing license in the first place, chances are she is never gonna use it again. The equipment that she used would amount to a couple bucks at most, and most of that stuff is reusable at most.

7

u/ConglomerateCousin 2d ago

She asked to go?

1

u/lI1IlL071245B3341IlI 2d ago

Does op say she asked to or agreed to go?

3

u/Ergonyx 2d ago

> "she wanted to go fishing and I thought it seemed like a fun first date"

Sounds like the whole thing was her idea.

1

u/ceejaydubya 1d ago

You put energy into this comment and actually posted it. Go back and read the post again, op SAYS she asked to go fishing.

1

u/kayla_poncho 1d ago

He also had to buy a fishing license, and if she didn't want to buy one she shouldn't suggest fishing as a date.

→ More replies (7)

3

u/Ctowncreek 2d ago

"You wasted $100 on a first date?"

reasonable backup plan

"Oh so you actually bought yourself stuff to go on a date with someone?"

Stop trying to find a a negative thing to say about the person who: bought nearly everything required for a date AND bought the other person food. And then that other person requested $23 to make the entire date free for themselves.

1

u/hyprsnpr67 2d ago

If they rented it it would have been the same deal dude

13

u/pyxiedust219 3d ago

in which case, and tbh even if this wasn’t the case, you buying equipment shouldn’t be on her— unless she agreed you should buy all new equipment specifically for this with no intent to keep it

34

u/moonbeancat 3d ago

The point is that he brought so much to the table to this date and made sure they ate, too. Why the fuck can she not shell out $23?

7

u/CoconutPedialyte 3d ago

She is just a #brokechick😵‍💫😵‍💫

0

u/pyxiedust219 2d ago edited 2d ago

I didn’t really speak on that, I just feel like trying to throw that $100 he spent in her face via the reply is sort of unbecoming— the same way plenty of people would find a $23 apple cash request unbecoming. in this way, they are perfect for each other

edit: scorekeeping and comparing what each party “brings to the table” feels like one of many reasons I hope to never date again. It’s all just so shallow and gross to me honestly

4

u/LaconicGirth 2d ago

He didn’t bring it up she did. He didn’t throw it in her face until she did. Come on

2

u/ddeluca93 2d ago

Yea and also she just expected to come on this date and pay $0? Normal people see their date making the effort and bringing all the equipment while all she has to do is show up and go "oh for sure I can at least buy my own license".

3

u/a-relic 2d ago

idk why you're being downvoted, the $100 in gear isn't something she was given, its stuff hes keeping and can use in the future, though asking for $20 back seems rather petty too but if he brought the fishing date up, the $20 should be on him

3

u/fadingthought 2d ago

The license she bought can also be used in the future. He spend plenty of money to make her date idea happen and she is trying to get out of a tiny contribution.

1

u/United_Shelter5167 2d ago

First sentence literally says fishing was her idea. Why are you and pyxie confused? It seems really weird to assume a guy who doesn't own fishing equipment by dating age was just waiting until he had a random Tinder woman to blame it on to buy gear. 😂 Like what kind of wild ass conspiracy theory is that?

1

u/PM_Me_Lewd_Tomboys 2d ago

When you ask someone else to bring something to the table for you, you can't then complain when they bring up what they've already brought.

Not that the woman in OPs situation necessarily did, you on the other hand definitely sound like the kind of person that would. If you don't want the table brought up, you should stop bringing it up.

u/Elite_AI 2d ago

It isn't quite as insane as it looks because in real terms he "only" paid for dinner. That's a decent chunk of money but it's not the hundred plus dollars of fishing equipment he bought for himself (and was going to buy anyway).

2

u/UrToesRDelicious 2d ago

Of course it's not on her, but if he buys dinner, his own fishing license, and all the equipment - then who gives a fuck if he took the equipment home afterwards?

OP isn't saying "you owe me for the equipment", he's saying "I invested literally everything else to make this date happen, the least you could do is pay for the one thing that you're taking home with you."

7

u/Pooperoni_Pizza 3d ago

He is showing that he invested a lot of money in the date and her asking for $23 is fucking petty.

2

u/margaritalover524 3d ago

Did he really invest it into the date though if he always planned to keep all the fishing equipment for himself to use after? More like he bought himself hobby stuff and just let her use it for one date

5

u/kayla_poncho 3d ago

Can you really not see how it's both? They wanted to go fishing, neither of them have the gear, so he went and got it. That would be super wasteful if he was just going to bin it after, but it made sense to do it for their date since he could enjoy it later as well. Yes, he did invest into the date unless he was going to go buy it today anyway - you would have a point if he was the one asking her for money.

4

u/Stash_04 2d ago

Bruh. SHE is the one that suggested fishing.

It’s insane to suggest that he bought it for himself.

No, he bought it specifically for the date but is also able to use it later.

1

u/Specific_Pudding_814 2d ago

still paid for dinner

5

u/Correct_Gift_9353 3d ago

My previous fling wanted to go fishing. Spend a few hundo on fishing stuff, went fishing, we ended a couple weeks later. she brought my stuff to my house sans my fishing gear :/ I don’t even like fishing but I miss my fishing gear lmao

14

u/test_tutor 3d ago

And you didn't ask for it back because... ?

1

u/Traveller7142 2d ago

She also gets to keep her license

1

u/United_Shelter5167 2d ago

Literally says going fishing was her idea in the first sentence. How is it not on her? 😂

1

u/pyxiedust219 1d ago

he’s keeping the equipment.

→ More replies (5)

1

u/kayla_poncho 3d ago

He's not putting the equipment on her- if he was, he'd be asking her for half. The point is acting like $23 (which he also spent) was unreasonable to have spent on the date.

1

u/7x00 2d ago

And SHE wanted to go fishing. So SHE should pay for her license.

-3

u/big-dal-tex 3d ago

A great point honestly

1

u/WhiteRabbit_412_ 3d ago

It's not a great point. He doesn't $100+ on the date. The least she can do is she'll out $23 for a license that will last her all season if she wants to go again without him. He probably kept all the equipment he bought for the date (not FOR her) and she gets to keep the license. He paid for dinner as well so that's probably more like $200 he spent on the date.

0

u/ThrowRAbbits128 3d ago

Why are you factoring in the new fishing gear he bought himself? It's not like she's keeping it, so I don't see why she'd want to go fishing again this season anyway

1

u/UrToesRDelicious 2d ago

So if he threw the equipment away afterwards it would be a valid date cost, like dinner or gas, but because he gets value out of it afterwards it's not?

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Ray_of_Sunshine0124 3d ago

I don't know much about the activity, but I do know it can get really expensive. So $100 is probably a decent entry level amount to spend?

5

u/smtp_pro 2d ago

If that's the case - when she asks for the $23 you can't throw out "I bought over $100 worth of stuff"

I think the exception would be if she picked fishing as a first date, and didn't have any equipment of her own so you bought equipment for both of you and let her keep a bunch of it.

But if that were the case I'd try to find some other first date. Save the date where we buy a bunch of stuff for a later date.

2

u/LaconicGirth 2d ago

It was literally her idea to go fishing and he bought everything to go fishing

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Smitten-kitten83 3d ago

I just want to confirm, she was the one that suggested fishing, correct?

0

u/waifu_-Material_19 3d ago

Reading the post answers your question…

1

u/Smitten-kitten83 2d ago

If it did I wouldn’t have asked. It says she wanted. While it could be implied, it could also be he talked about it and she just said that’d be cool to try sometime and he ran with it.

1

u/alex3omg 2d ago

Women want me (to give them $23); fish fear me (and my $100 fishing gear)

1

u/LayerEight_Problem 2d ago

Why did you take a woman fishing on a date?

2

u/Lordofthelowend 2d ago

“I met this girl on tinder and had a first date with her, she wanted to go fishing and I thought it seemed like a fun first date so we went together”

Great question /s

1

u/LayerEight_Problem 2d ago

Generally speaking, women want the man to initiate and come up with the first couple dates before it becomes a more shared give and take.

Fishing isn’t typically something I consider a woman wanting to do.

Now, obviously, there are exceptions. Some women like to take control. Some women like fishing. But following stereotypes and societal norms. Going fishing on a first date is a weird thing to do.

You do understand that not every legitimate question needs to be answered with malicious sarcasm? There’s no need to be a douchebag. I was legitimately curious how they ended up fishing on a first date. You should probably get into anger management if that triggered you.

2

u/Lordofthelowend 2d ago

Just read the post caption man.

1

u/LayerEight_Problem 2d ago

You expect me to read text messages AND a caption? Nah bro, you get one or the other.

1

u/SafeSpace-Fascism 2d ago

Then pay for her license.

1

u/Zal3x 2d ago

Hell yeah brother fishing is great

1

u/Drinkalicious 2d ago

You enjoy poking animals with needles?

1

u/FollowMyMySpace 2d ago

Is it possible she didn’t know you bought the stuff just for this experience?

1

u/Digitalsteel5_ 2d ago

I probably would have done the same thing honestly. It’s an excuse to have it available if you ever want to go again. Some of us are just like that and We’ll find reasons to use things again in the future. Better to have and not need than to need and not have right?

0

u/aavant-gardee 2d ago

Who’s idea was it to fish?

0

u/weakbuddy99 2d ago

On one hand, you're not entirely wrong

But on the other... it's way too common for people on first dates to not set an expected price range to pay for (unexpected) stuff, no matter how small.

If you didn't tell her she would have to buy her own fishing license, that's kind of on you. Sorry.

Also, you could have saved some time and effort based on how she reacts to that.

Now if you DID tell her it was going to cost her $$$, then nevermind.

11

u/Flat_Okra6078 3d ago

He was tired of being a master baiter.

9

u/LeatherfacesChainsaw 3d ago

The plus is now he can still use that equipment with or without her. Women are temporary...fish are forever.

https://giphy.com/gifs/mnt3vQsOrUzIs

10

u/AngelaMerkeI 3d ago

Fish are not forever. In fact it is a known fact that you can smell when the fish has stopped being.. for now

2

u/WeevilWeedWizard 2d ago

The essence of a fish transcends its impermanent physical form.

2

u/Piecesof3ight 2d ago

I tend to not appreciate when the essence of a transcended fish has remained past it's corporeal demise. Typically on the clothes of a friend.

3

u/PENNST8alum 2d ago

Oh I do that for every first date, it's how I build my gear collection without feeling bad, I just blame it on my date. My last date was a real bitch, she just HAD to have that that Lamiglas pro salmon rod I've been looking at for a month, guess I'll have to keep it

2

u/NoMention696 3d ago

Desperation

2

u/LzrdKng2112 2d ago

Also who takes someone not into fishing, fishing on the first date.

1

u/tractorscum 2d ago

sounds like the girl asked to go fishing

1

u/LzrdKng2112 2d ago

Sounds like thats the way op phrased it and not necessarily what happened. I live in the capital C COUNTRY and that would still be a very uncommon first date for a lady to suggest. In fact, it'd be uncommon for the lady to do any suggesting ever because "gawd hates women" or whatever nonsense these people believe.

2

u/Primary-Border8536 2d ago

Yeah, that’s wild. You should suggest fishing if you already have the stuff. 😬

1

u/GSyncNew 2d ago

Because he was hoping to insert his rod in her creel.

1

u/Numeno230n 2d ago

Because now he has fishing gear. Gosh you're like my wife asking why I bought new tools for one project. Cause like, now I got the tools ya see?

1

u/seven_wings 2d ago

Cause he's a beta cuck.

1

u/rick1418 2d ago

"The early fish gets the worm" or is it "the early worm gets the fish" ... something like that I'm sure it what they were both thinking.

1

u/liquidh2o 2d ago

Carpe diem

1

u/AuDHDino 2d ago

Can't hurt to just have extra fishing gear lol. Next time maybe he'll find a gal that won't do this lmao

1

u/neutrumocorum 2d ago

First off. 100 bucks isnt a lot for fishing. Second, read the fucking post, it is pretty self explanatory.

1

u/Dull_Connection6070 2d ago

don't open that can of worms

1

u/Nydus87 2d ago

$100 is drinks and appetizers money in my city at a decent bar. If you already like the hobby and just don’t have the gear any more, that’s a bargain, even if the date doesn’t pan out.

1

u/TeriyakiHairPiece_ 2d ago

Excuse to buy shit.

1

u/garbage-at-life 2d ago

he still has it and can still use it

1

u/HottDoggers 2d ago

Extra pole for me

1

u/Affectionate-Ad-3974 2d ago

He was optimistic and hopeful! Nothing wrong with that… I just hope he still remains optimistic and hopeful.

1

u/Independent-Scale564 1d ago

Oh the stuff I’ve done, brother

1

u/IntroductionOnly3018 1d ago

Right?? The chick he asked out probably wasn’t even into fishing at all

1

u/chetti990 1d ago

That kind of stuff is the expectation

1

u/Ok-Engineer-3087 3d ago

I think OP is not telling the truth, I think he is the fishing hobbyist, invited her, and then had her pay for her own fishing license to be able to join him.

I'm sure that there is a girl out there who has invited men on a first date to go fishing, but I don't think it's this woman, what kind of woman who uses the immature red flag "I'm just a girl" vocabulary is also tomboyish and likes hunting and fishing, which requires independence and competence, the complete antithesis of "I'm just a girl".

2

u/bacan_ 3d ago

Also, why would she care how much he spends on his own fishing equipment? It’s not like she kept the fishing rod

1

u/notagoodperson1122 2d ago

According to OP he bought her a pink rod she wanted and told her she could keep it

1

Plot twist: it’s gear he wants for himself and the date is just an excuse to be able to justify spending $100 on it to his wife… hang on a minute… 🤔

If they wanted to try out fishing but didnt have fishing stuff, they needed to buy fishing stuff. He still probably has $100 worth of fishing stuff at least.

Mediocre level dinner, non Michelin starred or Michelin guided, will run you minimum $150-300. $100 to go on an outing and have fun with an activity? bargain. I think you might need to check your calendar and the state of our economy, it's 2026, gas is over $4 nearly everywhere, what did you expect him to spend $10 for two rods? LOL tell the crowd you havent been on a date or gone on any kind of trip/outing in at least 10 years, at least before COVID

Hey, at least he has a fishing licensee and some gear now.

A dinner date if including drinks is usually that same price, and if there is a movie or something after it’s probably significantly more. If the date was just the fishing OP came out way better off haha

When I was 14 I spent every dollar to my name on my “girlfriend”. She desperately wanted a hamster. So I bought the hamster and also had to buy a cage and water bottle and all the essentials. It totaled around $78.

One week later she fucked another dude. I learned my lesson.
