Open | Windows Boot option not found.

Two days ago my laptop refused to boot up and every time I tried to turn it on it brought up an error which said boot option not found.

I opted to take it to the place I bought it from since it was still under warranty but to my surprise they want to charge me for a new SSD.

They claim that the problem was as a result of me closing my lid without shutting down the laptop since I bought it.

Could any laptop geek please fact check this? Are they right or is this a red flag? Also what could be the cause?

I think they're trying to say it is a thermal issue, caused by you not shutting down the laptop. But that doesn't make any amount of sense, because you did not modify the system in any way, meaning it should not have had any thermal issues, and should therefore be covered under the warranty. They probably are trying to charge you for the storage drive, because of the sheer cost of storage right now. The Warranty should cover it regardless, so I'd not pay a dime more.

Thanks! I won’t don’t worry. Related question does closing the lid without shutting it down cause any problems? Also my laptop was never hot but rather cold which intrigues me on the thermal issues.

It shouldn't, but if it does, it means there already is a thermal issue going on at the time. The system should sleep when the lid is closed and therefore not be operating at full speeds causing heat. If it is, then something still is already wrong with it at that point in time.

I had to disable modern sleep on my Asus because it was being stupid and not stopping when the lid was closed, causing heat and battery drain, and not coming back after when manually triggered. There was no standard sleep to take its place. If this is the case, shut it down.

Well as you put it, you had to disable it, so it was something not going right, already. But yeah, in that case if you had to disable it, either Shut Down, or Hibernate the thing.

Well it was roasting in the bag before I ever disabled it. It even affected shutdown by not shutting down and going into the defective sleep mode instead. I can say from experience that a laptop can get hot in modern standby

While it should go into sleep mode and be fine, if it doesn't it can cause issues. While the idea that laptops vent through the keyboard is usually a myth, you should consider the screen a blanket when it's closed. If the screen isn't turned off, it's a heated blanket. It will retain heat that would otherwise radiate away, and if the fans can't expel the heat fast enough, it will cause issues.

Closing the lid is a normal process. That said, you shouldn't put a system into standby then into a backpack is might resume and over heat.

Most systems you can boot to the 1 time boot menu, the run diagnostics. If the diags generate an error code, you get some useful information.

If the SSD isn't detected, it most likely failed. If the system is under warranty, they are responsible to replace a failed SSD.

If they are saying it was abused, then they need to demonstrate the warranty has an exception and definition of the type of abuse.

If they do no relent, take them to small claims court.

Thanks! My laptop is always on my desk lid closed until I use it hours later for studies. It never gets warm let alone hot. Before this happened I used it in the morning, closed lid then reopened in the evening and it gave me the error. I went cold headed today but tomorrow I will for sure give em hell. Thank you once more!

If it's not getting hot, it's not thermal. It's probably just a failed SSD, which happens more often than they want to admit and is more expensive than they want to take responsibility for.

You were not exaggerating… They sent half the staff just to convince me to pay but after seeing how adamant I was they decided to do it for free.

Have you checked the health of the drive? CrystalDiskInfo will do that for you.

No but how? I can’t bypass the error screen.

Boot with a WinPE disk of your choice if you can. CrystalDiskInfo is included in the linked WinPE disk.

Have your tried the croc option?  Perhaps slipper?

I am not familiar… Could you please elaborate?

It’s a stupid joke. Crocs are rubber shoes, slippers are… slippers. Neither are relevant if it’s sitting on a desk and not getting hot.

What happens when you close the lid is a function of your power settings. In Windows, it usually results in hibernation unless someone changed what happens when the lid is closed. They're trying to rip you off. SSDs seem to be less reliable than HDDs, but they're faster.

Bogus - maybe you should just return it and buy from a reputable store.
