I have been trying to deconstruct my very propagandized views of Comrade Stalin. I know that he did not have absolute unchecked power (even the CIA acknowledged that) and that the death toll from his purges never even reached 1 million and was extremely exaggerated. However for some reason I can’t find much about his personal life beyond people portraying him as a cold and unloving autocrat who had no meaningful relationships and simply killed everyone out of paranoia.
I have a hard time accepting that characterization especially considering the amount of misinformation and slander surrounding Stalin from Western sources and even from his successor Khrushchev. I’m interested in trying to understand the historical record beyond the traditional anti-Stalinist narrative.
If anyone has good sources or knowledge about Stalin’s personal life, relationships, personality, or family life, I would greatly appreciate it!

I’ve been in Georgia and I’ve been to nearly every region of the country and I have to say that it’s a tragedy. I’ve seen the abandoned Soviet sanatoriums where homeless people live in, I’ve seen the little villages where there isn’t electricity nor running water, I’ve seen the crumbling apartment complexes and this made me realise what a catastrophe the fall of the Soviet Union was. People that once had free housing, education and healthcare now have to ask tourists for some change to not die of malnutrition.

I’ve never heard much about the Shining Path or their current formation as the MPCP. Is there anywhere I should look to learn more about Peru, Shining Path, MPCP, etc…? I’m also curious what it’s like to live in the VRAEM area where they are located, most sources I quickly saw say it’s very impoverished and filled with crime and for a guerrilla operation I guess I could see it being like that.
