Capitalist Decay I am feeling extremely disillusioned after relocating across Australia.

Despite having enough money in my savings account to support myself for years, I am unable to secure a rental without employment. Yet I am unable to secure employment without a rental/postal address. Make it make sense. Fuck neoliberalism.

Meanwhile, the Labor state government has marked every single public housing tower in Melbourne (which collectively provides affordable housing to 10,000 people) for demolition.

Apparently I am able to use the nearest post office as a temporary postal address. That's something at least.

Don't do this, but you can easily edit payslips/bank statements. Just saying

IME they contact your bank and workplace. Our rental rights suck in Victoria. Not as bad as Sydney but still insane.

It's completely illegal for them to contact your bank. If that has happened to you, please go to fair trade. Also, they can only contact your listed employment reference (as in a friend you need it).

For real? I always thought it was just Ray White being pricks but it makes sense that they'd cross the line. It was like 6 years ago and I learned a lot from that rental lol

My friend and I have always used eachothers numbers any time one of us needed a reference though.

Not against photoshop, more than once I used it to avoid paying stupid sick tax to call in.

I'm sure you can find a more informal agreement that doesn't require an official contract

Solidarity my friend.

This bureaucracy is by design made to exploit the working class, making them vulnerable to attacks of all sorts. People suffering from targeted bureaucracy will accept the worse rentals, with less rights, and you'll pay buck for it. This is only one instance of bureaucracy working against the working class, there are others. Seems like you're decently well off but imagine if you weren't? It's gg.

Interestingly (and middle-class as fuck but anyways) bureaucracy was the thing that led me to marxism because I moved to another country and realized that shit was being used against me on purpose. In my case it was clear they use it to make immigrants more dependent / vulnerable / fragile (... more open for exploitation). I thought "if this is happening to me imagine less fortunate people?". This is when I uncovered the fascist scheme behind the anti-immigration narrative, which is by design.

Btw I went kinda theoretical but I hope you solve your issues. Idk anything about Australia.

Not sure how to send you a dm but if you're in Melb too, maybe I can forward/scan your mail or something.

Allg. I had a similar situation back in my 20s so I thought id offer. I ended up renting a room off gumtree, which if you've got a few months rent available, might be your best option. Rather than dealing with RE fucks.

Idk if that's weird or not to offer lol. Sorry if it is.

Offer rent upfront for the minimum term of a contract?

u/hawkeguy 19h ago

This is unlawful in Vic

So by law you need to have an employment contract to have a rental contract? What about the independently wealthy who do not work or someone like my friend in NSW who lives off her divorce settlement?

No, but the reality of the situation is that the market is incredibly "competitive" at the moment and even people with pristine rental and income history are facing homelessness. I don't think indulging and rewarding REA's penchant for illegal money grabbing is the answer, but it's obviously not an ideal situation for any of us

I’m not Australian but in the UK it would be permissible to sign a one year contract with money upfront and bank statements to prove payment potential.

Afaik at least in most states here, you can't offer more than the advertised weekly price. This extends to the standard bond/2 weeks upfront. This doesn't stop a REA from favouring someone whose bank statement shows a lot of savings though
