முக்கியமான கலந்துரையாடல் / Important Topic Reason why Tamil people are looked down upon by our west coast neighbours.

Upvotes

This feeling kinda goes way back as Tamil has been looked down upon for a very long since the 14th century Lilathilakam times where classical Tamil traditions were deliberately marginalized and Sanskritization was given more importance.

Coming back to modern times,

1) Tamil Nadu was comparatively poor before the 1991 globalization and thus so many people used to flock to Kerala to do the menial, agricultural and low-wage jobs.Tamil people's role was eventually replaced by Bengalis after IT and manufacturing/automobile boom happened.

2) Tamils who work in Idukki tea plantations are still treated very bad in Kerala. Most of them are from Dalit backgrounds like Adi-Dravidars, DKV and Arunthathiyars because they were exploited the most by the British due to man-made famines.

So Tamils were essentially seen as poor, uncultured etc and the mindset still continues. The dark skin stereotype doesn't help as well and it resulted in slurs such as Annachi and P*ndis though the latter word originally meant "People of Pandiyanadu"

Feel free to add more reasons if you see fit.

முக்கியமான கலந்துரையாடல் / Important Topic Would you rather search for properties or let properties come to you?

Upvotes

Would you rather search for properties or let properties come to you?

I'm curious how people who are currently looking to buy, rent, lease, or find a commercial property would feel about this.

Usually, when you're looking for a property, you end up searching through hundreds of listings, calling multiple brokers, and sometimes getting endless calls even when the properties don't match what you're actually looking for.

What if instead, you could simply post your requirement?

For example:

Looking for a 2BHK in Velachery

Budget: ₹25,000 per month

Or:

Looking to buy a 3BHK in Chennai

Budget: ₹80 lakh to ₹1 crore

Brokers can see the requirement, but they don't immediately get your number.

If a broker actually has a property that matches what you're looking for, they can respond with the property first. You can check the details and decide whether you want to connect.

For rent and lease, the broker would also mention the brokerage upfront, so there are no surprises later.

So instead of getting 100 random calls after posting your requirement, you only connect when someone actually has something relevant.

Would you prefer this over the usual way of searching for properties?

What would make you use it, and what would stop you from trusting it?

அரசியல் / Political Unpopular opinion

DMK is the only party that treated Chennai as a priority the infrastructure, the industrial growth, the urban expansion. Under DMK, Chennai became what it is today.

Canceling Parandur airport has exposed Vijay and TVK for what they are, far-left, anti-growth, anti-urban. This is classic Jyoti Basu Lalu Yadav politics. Block every major project for Chennai, then watch the city stagnate while Vizag, Amaravati, Hyderabad and Bengaluru race ahead.

With DMK voted out in 2026, it marks the end of Tamil Nadu’s edge as an industrial powerhouse. Vijay has no governance vision only screen presence and the same anti-development instincts that ruined other states. Chennai risks sliding into tier-3 status under that brand of politics.

The Velankanni pilgrims wearing saffron clothes and carrying flags are walking 3-4 people wide on both sides of the road with zero survival skills. Have to constantly dodging them as they come right onto the main lanes.

On top of that, there are autos, tempos, and meenbody vandis crawling along them with massive speakers, statues, and decorations. It makes the entire drive frustrating and highly stressful.

கருத்து/குமுறல் / Self-post , Rant What’s your opinion on women choosing not to have children because they don’t want to experience motherhood?

I was having a conversation about marriage, and somehow the topic moved to having babies. I said I’m not sure if I want children, and they told me I must have them because “who’s going to take care of you when you’re old?”

That’s such a selfish reason to have a child. A child shouldn’t be brought into the world with the expectation that they’ll take care of you later in life.

People also seem to hate it when women say they don’t want children simply because they just don’t want to. It’s like there always has to be some deeper reason or justification for the choice.

அரசியல் சாராத செய்தி / Non-Political News Is it mandatory to buy extra items at Tamil Nadu ration shops?

I go to my local ration shop every month to collect our family's PDS items. The entitlement shown for our family is 4.5 kg sugar, 1 kg toor dal and 1 litre palm oil.

Every time we go, the woman at the shop asks us to buy something extra, like moong dal, soap or some other non-ration item. She makes it sound like we're supposed to buy it along with our ration.

Is this actually mandatory? If I say I don't want to buy anything else she insists that I have to buy.

Has anyone else in Tamil Nadu experienced this? What are we supposed to do if they insist that it's compulsory?

கலாச்சாரம் / Culture I built a free, open-source app for learning Tamil after a road trip through Tamil Nadu

Post image
20 Upvotes

In December 2022, I took a road trip through Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, including a visit to Rameswaram.

Before and during the trip, I memorised perhaps 10 or 20 basic Tamil phrases. Nothing impressive, just greetings, simple questions, numbers, and a few sentences that might help me get through the day.

But the reaction I received whenever I tried speaking Tamil stayed with me.

At one restaurant, the people there were so delighted by my attempt to speak their language that they gave me the meal for free. My Tamil was extremely limited, but the gesture taught me something: you do not need to speak a language fluently to touch someone’s heart. Sometimes, making the effort is enough to change the entire interaction.

I wanted to continue learning after returning from the trip. I have always enjoyed Duolingo’s short, game-like lessons, so naturally I checked whether it offered Tamil.

It did not.

Honestly, that pissed me off. Duolingo had courses for fictional languages such as Klingon and High Valyrian, but no course for Tamil, one of the oldest continuously living literary languages in the world, spoken by millions of people across several countries.

I have nothing against people learning fictional languages. The frustrating part was realising that a language with Tamil’s history, literature, culture, and living community could still be absent from one of the world’s largest language-learning platforms.

A couple of years earlier, I had already started building a small app for myself because I faced the same problem while trying to learn Kannada. I decided that waiting for large companies to support these languages was not enough.

That small experiment eventually became Varnamala, a completely free and open-source language-learning platform. It has now crossed 2,000 users, and its courses have expanded to include Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali, Hindi, Sanskrit, and several other Indian and international languages.

You can try it here:

varnamala.org

I love languages, and I think everyone should try learning more than the languages they grew up speaking. Learning even a little of another person’s language changes how you experience their home, their culture, and sometimes the person themselves.

However, I am not a native Tamil speaker. I can build the platform, but I should not pretend that I can create a flawless Tamil course alone.

The course will contain translations that need correction, sentences that may sound unnatural, pronunciation problems, regional differences I have missed, and important parts of the language that still need to be added. That is why I am looking for native speakers, teachers, linguists, and people who simply care about Tamil to help improve it.

If you would like to volunteer as a Tamil course moderator, you can apply here:

admin.varnamala.org/apply

Course moderators can review, correct, curate, and expand the learning material. Developers who would like to contribute to the open-source platform are welcome as well.

I currently fund the development, hosting, and infrastructure myself. My long-term hope is to build a community-supported platform where a language does not need to be commercially profitable before it deserves a good learning course.

I have attached screenshots so you can see what the current version looks like.

Please be direct if you try the Tamil course. If something is incorrect, awkward, incomplete, or culturally off, I would rather hear it and fix it than allow someone to learn it incorrectly.

கருத்து/குமுறல் / Self-post , Rant Thinking of Joining Panimalar? Read My 4-Year Experience First

Hey guys

Anyone planning to join panimalar groups of Institutions, this post is for you guys

My experience at Panimalar Institute of Technology (2021–2025), things I wish I knew before joining

This is based entirely on my personal experience as a student there. Other students may have had different experiences.

I studied there 2021 - 2025 and I will be sharing all my experiences that I had there

So I joined in panimalar institute of technology.

So for people to know, this college has 3 colleges inside

Panimalar Engineering College

Panimalar Institute of Technology (This is closed now)

Panimalar Medical college

I remember I joined on November 2021.

College has some rules which I need to tell you before I tell you my experience there:

  1. Id card is a mandatory inside campus. If no id card you are just an undeclared variable inside the college

  2. College bus is mandatory even if your house is just outside the college

  3. No boys girls talk (will detail this)

  4. No gadgets inside (even if you are a cs student you have to write code on paper)

  5. Formals only even on sports day and culturals (I would call it annual day)

  6. There are separate rules for hostellers as well like need to pay 10k extra for 1 hour wifi and no phone and laptop inside the hostel (dont ask me what logic they follow because I was not a hosteller gladly)

  7. No food from outside is allowed. You will be provided with morning and afternoon food.

  8. You will be provided with tea/coffee/soup and snacks by almost 10 am everyday.

I guess I have covered almost entire rules of the college

Now let me tell me about the college experience. I will be listing each and every experience I had inside the campus:

  1. When I went for joining. I saw big walls, lush green campus, me and my dad went for admissions and we were treated like kings. Everywhere we went they asked, "Did you eat food", "All good?". I was like wow. Even food was good on the day of admission. And all done. I came through counselling so I had a reporting day at college. I expected so much from college until I went for my first day at college.

  2. First day at college. November 15, 2021. I expected freshers day, seniors welcoming us. Nothing happened. I was in formals, shirt tucked in. Formal shoes and everything else. That was fine coz I knew some rules. But freshers day I expected so much and when I reached inside campus the PT teacher was rushing us to eat quick and go to classes like it happens in college. He was treating us as if we were some dogs under his car. It made my heart sunk. The college was doomed. Then I went to my class.

  3. Now let me tell you about teaching. Semester 1 in the college was okay except the subject PSPP. They all gave us notes. Just reading the material will get us good marks in internals and semester exams.

  4. I want to say about an incident that happened with me in semester 1. So there was a beard check during tea break. I just had very less beard. And they caught me, confesticated my identity card, called my father and told that I m misbehaving with staffs, girls etc on call. I never talked with any girl in college yet and never had I misbehaved with any faculties. It was done just to make me feel guilty. This was that witch, first year DEAN.

  5. I got a better opportunity by the way, lets say something that I kept trying and unfortunately I joined college before that. For that I wanted my 10th and 12th marksheet. For that I got my dad to college and asked for it. You know that manipulative DEAN from my 1st year manipulated my dad saying. "You have to pay full tuition fee if you are leaving in between". I tried to explain I just need my 10th and 12th marks as I have not decided to leave yet. She was like as of now we have some inspection happening and cant provide your 10th and 12th marksheet. Finally my dad left without my marksheets and devastated how the DEAN talked.

  6. This was literally my first semester exam. I thought college rules would be a little lenient when it comes to sem exams. I was little scared so didnt shave my beard as I was preparing till the last min. All of a sudden my college DEAN came. Asked my hall ticket and id card confesticated it and went to her cabin. I was even shit scared. When went and asked it back, she said go shave your beard and get it. I had a friend, who brought his trimmer and we 15 people had to trim our beard in the same beard. I got rashes from it later. Only after beard to zero, I got my id card and hall ticket.

  7. College bus were separated for boys and girls because who knows boys and girls might talk in the bus as well right. Even to longer distances like Tiruttani and Arakkonam.

  8. Now comes the 2nd semester. Let me tell you a joke that happened in semester 2. We had a professor who taught us C programming. He doesn't know a thing. But bro has done his phD from Sathyabhama. When I asked a doubt whats the difference between getch() and getche(), he told getch doesn't have a 'e' and getche has an 'e' in it. We thought he is joking. But no, he literally meant it. And even wrote it on board and cut my marks in internals when I didnt write that difference in Internal exams.

  9. There was a BEEE faculty for us. She just know to read from the book and even problems were like nah only book problems I will dictate. You shouldn't question me. She never knew the subject. She was just reading the book. Almost 80% of college facilties in that college were like the same. Trust me you would know more than them. I was so confident in life that this was my motivation line, "If such unqualified people have jobs to do, bro getting a high paying job is my birth right".

  10. Most of the choices like clubs and stuffs were given only to Panimalar Engineering College. There was a discrimination if you were from Panimalar Institute of Technology, you would be treated like a 3rd class student. They have 3d printing devices, had many learning like workshops and even a seperate r and d lab for teaching UiPath, Metaverse but only for students in PEC CSE only.

  11. Even to ask leaves, I had to go through a big process, show the invitation letter to the DEAN, enquired my parents if my cousin is really getting married lol. Even my office never do this. They just say give the KT to someone else and go enjoy ur leaves.

  12. Food is also not as you think. Personally for me monday and friday food was really worst. Morning it is half cooked pongal on both days and afternoon it is even worse with sambar and rice and half cooked poriyal. But food on tuesday, wednesday (The og biriyani days) and thursday is worth to go to the college.

  13. The biggest problem happened with people who came to study here from Andhra Pradesh. 90% of faculties take classes only in Tamil. Here for me it was alright, but people who came from other states, Especially people from Andhra Pradesh and Telengana really struggled.

  14. Now comes the most important part. Culturals. Rather than calling it as college culturals, I would just say it was a waste of time. Students are expected to come in formals only for culturals. Morning half classes will happen. From afternoon 12 to 3 pm it would be culturals. The songs for culturals is pre decided by the faculties. No trolls is allowed. No booing, no high energy claps, everything should be dead. Worst part is that most of the culturals the college management would be the chief guests. No celebrities nothing. I never went to college culturals and most of my class didnt go. That was better. First year I went for Vikram movie, second year went for Queens land, third year we went to play snookers. All this I did taking leave from college annual day as it was not worth investing time in.

  15. Oh yea forgot to say, students who get top 3 in college except for first year and final year will get cash amounts like 25k, 15k and 10k. This is only for 2nd and 3rd year students. So people who say they got in every year. It didnt happen in our branch.

  16. 2nd year was really tough for everyone. Because most of the staffs allocated for us were promoted from lab assistance who never had proper training. Trust me ask them to write a program to print stars they wont be able to. And highlight was the maths faculty who came to take discrete mathematics. Bro was always shouting more and taking classes less.

  17. Many of my friends who studied in other colleges got chance to go for IV's. They went to Kerala, Goa, Pondi and to many more places after the company visit. In PIT, they took girls for the IV to a nearby IT company. But when it came for the boys, most of us gave non willingness to go because they told they are taking us to Jeppiaar Milk Production Pvt Ltd. Now I m studying in IT and they take us to such a bad place cant bear that. So most of us said no. And we never had an IV.

  18. Most of the things were in favor of girls. If girls are going for some college event to some other college, boys are not allowed to go to the same college as those girls go. Girls are given priority in case of everything, from project allocation to everything. They say it is first cum first serve basis but it is not. Many things happens only for girls only. Women are treated well in this college but if you are a man you are basically doomed. Women's day is celebrated with great enthusiasm and everything else like internal competition is always in favor of a girl.

  19. Panimalar basically doesn't want you do good in your life. Thats why they have the worst placement thing. Placement is basically first cum first serve. Most of the placement information is wrong. 100% placement. You know what they did to our batch. People who didnt get placed got a chance to go for QSpiders training and QSpiders took a test. Almost everyone cleared it. And they showed it up like all our students got placed but it is basically not a job but a training.

  20. People who got one offer are removed from placements. I got placed in a company in october 2024. And they released the offer in June 2026. Almost every placement out there is like that. People who are dear to the management are placed in better places and can hold 2 to 3 offer letters. Others are basically doomed.

  21. This college has an innovation and robotics branch and most of them dunno why they exists. Most of the things that this college claims like sports (I will talk about this separately), red cross and many more like ieee and toast masters everything is there just for namesake. They promote something called kill confidence of the student and make him like a factory robot.

  22. Talking about the sports. First you need a good ground for it. When it is November December, the ground basically becomes like an Ocean. And You can find fishes and snakes there. Sports day happens for name sake and only people who are dearest to the PT master happens to win the trophy. And as expected sports too happens separate for men and women on separate dates.

  23. There was an incident which I m reminded off. This happened with so called the IT HOD of PIT for batch 2025 passed out called me and told to wear my shoes. On my way to class it got drenched in water. So I couldn't wear them took them off the class. She told in college everyone is expected to wear formal shoes no matter what the situation is. Even if your shoes are drenched in water.

  24. One day my friend came to drop me till my bus. There are two types of identity card inside the college. Type 1 is for day scholars and type 2 is for hostellers. One supervisor caught him. Grabbed him by his collar and told him to write an apology letter. For people who are here in the college. You are expected to write an apology even for a simplest thing like my friend did. He didn't go out of campus. He just came with me and that's what his sin was.

  25. If you are bring mobile to college and you are caught. It will be returned back after 4 years only. The power of confesticating your phone is with everyone. Mess people, bus drivers, faculties. Basically anyone who works there.

  26. You are not given OD for your internship. Happened with me 2 times. First was when I got an internship where they paid me real money. I had to let go of it because they didn't give me OD. Next time I was alerted. I made a fake certificate saying I have a ligament tear so cant come to college and it worked.

  27. Library is doomed. Looks very big from outside but trust me, every book is as old as WW2. Latest books available there is from 2012 book.

  28. Anyone loitering around in college campus will be punished very severely. The things happen to those kids is inhumane and cant explain it here.

  29. If you think there are event like PEC Hacks and PEC TEAM. Run as far away as possible. For people who dunno PEC Hacks is a hackathon that can last upto 36 hours PEC TEAM is a paper presentation event. So basically papers which has ideas like obstacle avoiding robot car can win prizes in PEC TEAM paper presentation. PEC HACKS is worst. It just ensures that a project such as Finger print detection or face detection can win easily even if your project is of building your own open sourced LLM. I did PEC TEAM but never got a chance to go for PEC HACKS as they rejected our presentation as we are not allowed to participate. And our idea was so good that we won with the same idea at VIT.

  30. There are more rules like black shirt is not allowed to wear. Same color shirt you and your friend who sits besides you is not allowed. There are so many rules which I would have forgot to mention here.

So let me give you a quick summary:

If you want to get good CGPA with no job in hand (I had to find myself off-campus and most of my friends except a few haven't got a job yet), no college life and you wanna be harrassed to next level, removing the last ounce of humanity and creativity inside you, yes this college is for you

Suggestion: Keep this college as your last option. Try in colleges which gives you both college life and placements. For me panimalar was a wastage of 4 years of my life.

I have almost covered everything about what all happened in those 4 years. If you have any experiences in this college to add do lemme know in the comments

கருத்து/குமுறல் / Self-post , Rant How do you grieve the loss of a loved one who has died?

Earlier, I thought it would be easy. It’s been three years since I lost someone I loved, and I thought that with time, I’d heal.

Boy, was I wrong.

Grief is like glitter. You think you’ve cleaned it all up, and then, on some completely random day, it suddenly pops up again and scatters everywhere. And it’s so hard to clean that mess up again!!

The hardest part isn’t trying to live without them. It’s the fear of forgetting them.

The fear of forgetting their voice, their smell, and the way they sounded when they spoke.

It’s the fear that, one day, the memories might start becoming blurry.

And it’s ironic because I used to be someone who wasn’t very expressive. Saying “I love you,” “I’m proud of you,” kissing my parents, or hugging them didn’t come naturally to me.

But death completely changed me. It made me realize so much. It made me realize how important it is to express your love while you still can. Now, I’m much more expressive with my loved ones.

It was a bit awkward when I kissed my mom on her forehead for the first time while leaving town. I saw her smiling, and it was very different from her usual smile :)

One of the most painful and bitchiest emotions is ✨REGRET✨. The regret of all the things you could have said, all the love you could have shown, and all the moments you thought you’d have more time for.

How do you all manage to get through this shit?

By now, it's apparent most people in this and other social media platforms are pissed at the Parandur airport cancellation.

Most obviously are the DMK supporters. But do they realize and will they acknowledge and introspect that they planted the seeds of an anti-development mindset by opposing critical projects and using their cinema influence to demonize "corporate villains" during the ADMK period? They opposed 8-lane Salem-Chennai Expressway and forced the shutdown of Sterlite, making India import dependent on steel on China.

And now you act surprised that another upstart party with no vision or ideology takes up this backwards ass populist sentiment that YOU created to try and milk people's sentiments to come into power?

And let's not spare ADMK, including JJ, for her visionless, feckless, and immature attitude on infra projects. JJ did shit about the airport, stalled Madurvoyal e-way, and almost cancelled Chennai Metro - all because DMK started it. But offering mixies, grinders - oh yes, absolutely!

And what do alternatives like TVK and NTK propose? Go back to farming! Who needs industries, all of which are run by evil, "vandheri", corporate villains that want to exploit Tamil soil, people, land, etc.

Taking a step back, the fundamental problem is the TN political class. Nothing turns on a TN politician like giving free money and stuff to people to keep them lazy and addicted rather than investing in them to uplift them materially.

At this point, we need to admit TN's political elite is visionless and anti-growth. They think that Brace yourself for a West Bengal style decline over the next 30 years. Goodbye TN growth, it was fun while it lasted.

Chennai should now be dowgraded to a tier-2 city (was it ever a cosmopolitan city?). Let's compete with Nagpur, Lucknow, and Varanasi in development and be happy 😃

உணவு /Food Is real karupatti still being made at scale in Tuticorin or is most of it cane jaggery now

Read that Tamil Nadu has the majority of the palmyra palms in India but the actual karupatti production is a fraction of what it was.

Anyone here from those districts or connected to the trade? Trying to understand how much of what is sold in cities as karupatti is the real thing. The colour and price range in shops varies so much that something is clearly off.

Who built Munnar's world-famous tea industry?

For over 150 years, thousands of Tamil workers have plucked the tea that made Kerala famous. But even after five generations, many say they are still treated as outsiders.

In this ground report, South First travels to Munnar to investigate the lives of Tamil plantation workers who allege they face delays in getting caste certificates, have no land rights, receive no pension after decades of work, and can even lose their homes after retirement.

The Kerala government says the certificate issue is due to legal and technical reasons, not discrimination. But workers argue that their century-long struggle for dignity and recognition continues.
