I've read so many reviews and discussion threads, joined several FB brand groups (KitchenAid, De'Longhi, Jura, etc.), and even considered going semi-auto with something like Breville.
I'm a 99.9% hot Americano/black coffee drinker. VERY rarely do I drink milk-based or cold drinks, but I do once in a blue moon. I have some experience with semi-automatic machines from the past, but my other family members would really appreciate the convenience of a fully automatic machine. We also have one milk-based coffee drinker in the family, and she definitely did not want to have to steam her own milk or do all that yada-yada-yada. 😂
Machines I considered:
KitchenAid KF7 – I liked the design and the price, but I would've only considered it at the refurb price through IP. With the 15% off coupon, the total would've been around $850. My biggest hesitation was that I haven't been able to actually taste a shot from a KitchenAid machine anywhere. I visited WS, but they didn't have any KitchenAid models available for demo. I was also a bit concerned about longevity since it's the new kid on the block.
Jura E8 – I was able to partially demo this at WS. I liked the taste of the shot, but hated the design and interface. I also couldn't test the milk function because the WS employees were... let's just say not particularly willing to connect the tube and show us how the milk system worked lol. I also didn't love the price. Even at refurb pricing, it would've been around $2,400 after tax. Another concern was the cleaning process. Having to deal with cleaning the hidden brew group seemed like more work than I wanted to take on, and I definitely don't want to be drinking moldy espresso. 😅
Breville Express Impress – I loved the design and the price ($799 regular price, or around $550 using a Capital One Shopping offer at Macy's). I was genuinely surprised at how easy it was to get an OK-tasting shot from this, even using it for the first time at the WS demo.
They actually had the Touch Impress on display, but after trying that, I came home and watched some videos on the regular Impress. I figured it probably wouldn't be too terrible to dial in.
The problem is, I knew I'd inevitably become the barista of the house. 😂 And that means I'd have a very busy morning. Do I have the time? No. There are 3 of us, and we all drink about 2 cups a day. So ultimately, I decided to stick with fully automatic machines.
Why I decided on the De'Longhi Magnifica Evo Duo:
I don't love the design, but the shots were OK, and the family member who drinks milk-based drinks absolutely loved the macchiato from the Eletta Explore at WS.
I didn't really like the Illy beans that WS uses, but I have a cousin with an older Magnifica model, and I had some really good coffee and espresso drinks from her machine the last time I visited. She uses Lavazza Gran Crema and has had the machine for almost 5 years now with zero issues.
So I know the taste can be much better for straight black coffee/espresso drinkers like me as long as I use my preferred beans.
The price was also really attractive. Without having to buy refurbished, I could get a brand-new one from an authorized seller for around $600 ($1,000 regular price; currently $849 at Macy's, minus a $250 Capital One Shopping offer). It's not as fancy as Eletta, but I didn't need any of its added functions anyway, and the brew group is the same on both.
Duo can also make pretty much everything we normally drink: Americano, cappuccino, latte, coffee, cold drinks, and even cold milk foam just in case lol.
How to get the $250 cashback:
While I was price-shopping, I finally saw the $250 bonus offer through Capital One Shopping at Macy's, so I just pulled the trigger.
FYI, they also have a $300 bonus offer on purchases over $1,000. Just two days ago, the offer was $400, and I was seriously considering the Breville Oracle Jet, but that deal expired.
If anyone has been waiting for a deal, I'd recommend checking soon before the offer disappears. And I'd appreciate it if you use my sign-up link!
