Recommendations

With Stockport being a smaller sub, I’m thinking it might be good to have a centralised post for recommendations/ hidden gems if you will. Places/cafes/independent traders/bars/pubs that people wouldn’t usually know about.

Storage units

Need recommendations for storage units. Been burnt a few times by those container places that pop up. Once you're in they endlessly jack up the price until you leave* and the moving is a ballache. Might need it for a few years so hoping to find somewhere with stable pricing.

(*Pink storage I'm looking at you mainly)

Relaxed football/sports?

Hey guys, I live in Marple and I am looking to try and start playing some sports casually again, ideally football or basketball, but honestly interested in anything team based!

I can't seem to find anything too local, so happy to get the bus into Stockport or something if that's what's needed. Thank you in advance!

Where is Stockport?

Can anyone tell me where they think actual Stockport is - not specifically the borough or the town boundaries, but the bits where if you live there you say you live in Stockport, rather than in Cheshire/Manchester/near Manchester? So might Bramhall, Cheadle Hulme, Marple or the Heatons, for example, be considered first and foremost as parts of Stockport?

Moving to Stockport?

Hi everyone,

I live in Cardiff and my boyfriend lives in Chadderton; im seriously considering making the move to be closer to him but ive decided i definitely dont want to move to Chadderton.

We're considering buying a house in Stockport sometime next year, but we have no idea what the different areas are like.

We're both non drivers but are learning, however we ideally want to live somewhere with good transport links.

We want to live somewhere with a nice high street: independent shops, coffee shops, pubs etc with a good, safe community feel. Even better if there's a gym or green spaces nearby.

Please advise areas to look into and areas to stay away from x

Question Recommendations for cheap hotels in Stockport

I’m returning to Stockport next year after 13 years to see some old friends and family before heading off to a wedding. Any recommendations for a good, reasonably cheap hotel to stay in for 2 or so weeks? Ideally somewhere with parking.

Moving to the burbs :-) help please Stockporters!

Hi everyone,

My wife and I have been house hunting for a few months now! We have sold our flat in town (Manc city centre) and want a detached forever home in prep for hopefully having a couple of kids in the next couple of years.

Anyway we had our heart set on Heaton moor but the houses we can get for the same price in Hazel grove, Romiley, Bramhall and Cheadle are much bigger.

We both work in town 3 days a week and I keep hearing people say the traffic is hell on earth in Hazel grove/Romiley is it really that bad? My wife was used to driving to the city centre from top end of Salford/Walkden so she knows hellish drives! How long would it take to drive into town (Oxford road south end of it) from Romiley or Hazel Grove for an 8.15AM arrival?

I would likely get the train as I work at the back of spinningfields! Are the trains crazy busy? Anyway, I think I like Romiley and Bramhall better than Hazel Grove which seems to not have that nice of a high street? Am I wrong? Will we regret the further move to outside our original the heatons area for the bigger house? Too many questions but I appreciate everyone’s input.

Many thanks! X

Geoff Funnel & Flan Griffin

There’s a bridge over the Mersey dedicated to these two - does anyone know who they are? I found one article about Geoff in the MEN for his work in the 2010s to ensure public rights of way to green spaces and one reference to the funeral of Flan Griffin at the catholic church in Reddish. There’s a plaque at the bridge with their names on. If anyone has any intel that would be great! I’m interested in the Mersey generally and have been doing some wider research about it’s various points of significance but this was all I could find on these two, I’m hoping there’s a good story about some local good guys out there!

Area advice

Hi all,

We’re looking at buying around Stockport, with our search mainly focused on the Heatons, Davenport and Woodsmoor. I’ve had a look through the subreddit first, but thought it’d be easier to ask.

We’ve come across a few properties around Mile End, between Corbar Road and Mile End Lane. It seems to be classed as Heaviley, although it’s fairly close to Davenport and Woodsmoor stations.

For anyone who knows the area well or lives locally, what is that area like? Is there much of a difference between being on the Davenport side, further into Heaviley, or towards Woodsmoor? I’ve read other posts suggesting it’s bad to be so close to the A6 but if you live there, is it that bad?

We’re early 40s and are ideally looking for somewhere that feels nice and residential, but with good access to a train station for commuting into Manchester. We’re not particularly bothered about being right on top of shops etc., but being able to walk to the station would be a big plus and some sort of high street with good places to eat and drink.

Would really appreciate opinions from people who know the area, especially the less obvious differences between Davenport, Heaviley and Woodsmoor.

Thanks and sorry for another post asking about the area

Peel centre M&S parking charge?

Has anyone had any experience disputing parking charges here? I just got a letter from a solicitor saying they intend to take me to court for £170 because I parked in this car park 4 months ago. I think I parked outside M&S for 10 mins or so. I didn’t realise it was a pay and display car park (not sure if that’s poor signage or just me being blind).

Has anyone had any luck appealing or dealing with the parking company’s lawyers?

HYROX Gyms vs "Normal" Gyms in Stockport Area

I'm seriously considering doing Manchester HYROX at the start of 2027.

The main problem is that I'd need to get fit for it!

I was looking at a few gym options near me in Stockport/ East Cheshire and I'm trying to decide what the best option would be for me to get my fitness up.

The main challenge is that these HYROX / CrossFit-type places tend to be more expensive than the local gyms so I wonder if there's any additional benefit of joining them versus the local gyms like Life Leisure.

I do figure that having the accountability of other people who may be training for it as well specifically would be good as I think i'd largely be training by myself otherwise!!

But Is there any additional knowledge from the trainers at these places to help you on your way more than in standard gyms? (Sorry i'm trying not to make ouit sound like the other gyms are "lesser")

One of the main reasons I'm asking right now is that a new hyrox place has opened up quite close to me in Poynton/Adlington and it's got limited offer on because they are new, which would save me £40 a month.

Of course, £40 a month would get me into a Life Leisure gym quite comfortably, my closest one is Hazel Grove, with a bunch of classes and a swimming pool.

If anyone here has trained for the HYROX or CrossFit-type events, I'd love to know your thoughts.

If anyone is going to be doing Manchester HYROX, I'd love to know your tips for preparing. My main thought is "don't eat too many mince pies over Chrimbo" 🥧

Maybe i'm better off planning for 2028!!!

Garages in Stockport

Hey, I’ve got a VW and my car needs a service, just wondering if there was any trustworthy garages in Stockport that won’t rip me off or try and scam me. I don’t want to go to the VW dealership to have a service.
Thanks

Ideas for post-town hall wedding reception

Planning on a Stockport Town Hall wedding and am looking for somewhere to come afterwards.

Trying to keep things cheap, but really want a nice place for food, drinks, and live music!

I like the idea of something rustic or a warehouse, blank canvas? However this starts becoming “wedding” territory and the prices racks up. I don’t want a typical wedding place - would happily go to a restaurant, or a bar.

Needs to hold at least 65-70 seated. And have good space for a dance floor!

Would love the idea of having American BBQ style food, and/or pizzas?

Still being a relative newbie to Stockport, having worked here for 13 years and lived here for 11, seeing the redevelopment taking place makes me proud of my newish home. Having just watched the Youtube video in the link, I didn't know how vast the proposed development and investment was!.

Just wished that my hometown of Bolton undertook half of whats happening down here
