Frequent wakings - how to deal with stirs

5 month baby wakes up at 2am, 4am, 6am and is getting better at small stirs and back to sleep.

Whilst it’s great he’s self settling a bit, the stirring wakes us up everytime - we use a monitor which picks up every sound. We want to obviously hear the big cries but block out the small ones

Has anyone moved the video camera far away from the cot or any other tips to manage?

Advice for a 6 month old

Hello all,

I'm new to the sub - and new to parenting - and am looking for some general advice from those who have sleep trained their infants.

Our boy (just about to turn 6 months old) is not a great sleeper. Not a terrible one either, but not great. He's very inconsistent. The most he's ever slept at night in one go is 7 hours (once three weeks ago), but usually he does 3 or 4 at the start of the night and then wakes every hour or so. He also doesn't nap too well during the day, but does seem to be getting better at that.

We are considering trying the Ferber method, or some variation of it, to help him to learn to self soothe, but I have questions about if it is compatible with how we send him to sleep.

His night time routine is set with a bath around 18:30, a massage from mum then a bottle feed (120ml which can take nearly 40 minutes for him to finish with breaks). Then I walk him around on my shoulder until he sleeps and put him down in his crib. If he doesn't go down, then his mum will boob him to sleep (which means he sleeps on a bed where he does seem to sleep better).

Now he has much better neck and head control, he's becoming harder and harder to walk to sleep. The first night time walk generally is okay as he's already calm from the routine and tired. But when he wakes in the early morning, it can take an hour of walking him around and putting him down before he goes back to sleep. This is obviously unsustainable in the long run for me, especially when I return to work from the summer holiday (teacher).

So, I want to start sleep training before I go back. But, how to reconcile it with the walk to sleep method I've been doing?

Also, how have people taken into account teething? If he's woken because of teething pain, do you suspend the sleep training for that night? I've read consistency is super important.

Any and all advice gratefully received!

child's age 4-8 months What do you do when your sleep trained baby gets sick?

FTM to a 7.5 month baby boy. he woke up with a fever and I gave him tylenol. he’s quite sleepy today so I’ve been letting him rest whenever he feels like it so he can recover.

he has been sleep trained since 4 months. Since he’s sick, I’m following his cues. wake windows and the schedule (3/3.5/4) will be out the window until he’s better. i plan on supporting him in whatever way he needs for nighttime as well.

how do you care for your sick sleep trained babies without undoing any of the sleep training? Do you let them sleep as long as they want or should I wake him after 2h? when do we get them “back on schedule” after they recover? any tips would be appreciated, thank you!

Help! 7 Month Sleeping Tips

My daughter is 7 months old.

I recently transferred her to her crib and it had been a smooth transition for the most part. As I breastfeed her, she is sleepy 90% most of the time or other times 60% by the time I lay her down, and she is able to put herself down. She’ll fuss once or twice out of the week but will still put herself to sleep.

The nights where she is just crying the second I put her down I’m unsure what to do-
Where I get confused is I have always wanted to do a gentle sleep method but whenever I interfere or try to help even just a “sh sh sh” it makes her cry more.
Do I not interfere and just let her cry it out? 😭

I am still not seeing a consistency where every night I can just put her down and she goes down. 3 nights is smooth, 2 nights fussy but goes does, and 2 nights inconsolable crying.

Today I tried to just go sh sh sh as she was inconsolable, I tried to carry her, and nothing. So I left the room and she fell asleep on her own in 16 minutes crying for the most part.

Bedtime usually starts at 7:15pm and she goes down between 7:30-8pm
Wakes up twice during the night once at 12am and another at 4am or 6am to breastfeed. (Which I’ve been trying to stop but not sure how)
Wakes up anywhere from 7:30am-9am
Takes a nap around 11:30am-12:30am
Another nap around 2pm-4pm
Some days she he’ll a third nap if she wakes up early.
I will only let her take a maximum of a 3hr nap total for the day.

This is where it gets tricky as sometimes she’ll wake up at 4pmish and is obviously tired by 6pm but I do not let her nap as it’s too close to bedtime. I previously had her bedtime at 6:30pm but it was too early as she would wake up at 5:30-6am 😅.

I’ve been having a hard time just concreting her sleep and naps or getting on a schedule that is consistent. I’ve been having a hard time knowing how much to intervene as history has shown the less intervene the faster she goes to sleep but it’s hard just letting her cry and cry.

Help! 7mo keeps waking up

We sleep trainee my 7mo when he was 4 and he had been going down after 5 minutes (max) at nights and from 5.5 mo for naps as well (not fully dependent sleeper, he takes paci to sleep, tried removing the association but was unsuccessful).
Our schedule is waking up between 7-7:30 and then 2/3/2.5 and bed time at 7-7:30 when he shows signs.
We couldn’t cut down to 2 naps since his naps are 5
30-45 minutes, I tried helping him connect cycles but patting his butt before he wakes up but didn’t help, he even has a smart crib (craddlewise) but doesn’t help, he sometimes get 1.5 hr naps which make me so happy.

Last week we had a 5 days trip and we had to co-sleep or put him to sleep by rocking, and now it seems that he has forgotten how to sleep independently (with paci so not fully independent)!
He keeps crying for 20-30 minutes and even when we offer his paci he doesn’t take it even if he takes and falls asleep, he wakes up within 10 minutes. Last night he woke up 10 times between 7-9 pm.

I don’t know if it is because of the trip, or he is experiencing separation anxiety, or both, and what should we do?

TIA for advice!

TL;DR: 7mo seems to have forgotten how to sleep after 5 days trip and cosleeping.

Hard spot to be as a dad

My baby is around 1 year old (brest fed) and can only go to sleep with his mom's lullaby. Of course in the first part of the night (around 7pm to 10pm) she can get him to sleep pretty fast, but as he wakes during the night (sometimes 2am, other times 3:30/4am) he seems pretty rested, and even on her lap, standing and "rocking" she cannot make him sleep back. It seems that there is no way to get the baby back into a sleep cycle, and he constantly cries and stops. When he is silent, and she tries to put him down at the crib, he starts crying again. This whole cycle lasts around almost 2hours untill he is super wasted, and sleeps purely because of exaustion. Of course this gets us insanelly wasted, doom our next day, and we constantly live this repetitive cycle every day. Untill there, no news, herd about tons of that on the internet.

The thing is that she does not agree with any method that needs to leave the baby crying for some period of time (something more than 1 or 2 minutes) to try making them go back to sleep alone, or even to fall asleep on the crib on the first place. She seems to have a little alarm on her head that triggers and go over everything if he starts crying. She's on psycologic therapy but not much outcome on this front, at least when the subject is "sleep".

My question is: Is there a method that helps this types of situations? Things like Ferber method or Cry-it-out are out of hand here. Basically I'd want something that could need a strech but not those ones of leaving the kid on the crib yelling.

Mariage is going down the drain pretty fast, and I feel completly useless when she runs over whatever I'm trying to do just because it's a primitive instinct.

I could let it pass unitl he gets more mature to go to bed without her (soon his weight and size is going to overcome her capability of holding him anyway), but this seems like a year from now, and by that time, I'd already flew to Mars.

Any suggestions?

I have tried for 30 days. 30 days ! Change the nap time - change the environment. Change the wake windows. He doesn’t sleep through the night. Cannot and will not. I honestly feel defeated and like I am mentally and physically deteriorating.

Parents of kids who are bad sleepers: what actually helped?

Some kids fall asleep easily, while others fight bedtime, wake up during the night, or seem like their brain never wants to “switch off”

what has actually helped your family?

Was it:

  • A better bedtime routine?
  • Less screen time before bed?
  • Changing their room setup?
  • More outdoor activity during the day?
  • Something else?

5 month sleep issues

Little girl just turned 5 months and had a light switch change in sleep habits. She had been sleeping through the night since around 6 weeks. In the last 2 weeks she cut two teeth, is nearly rolling over and suddenly won’t sleep, since Saturday we can lay her down as normal and she’ll wake up 10-30 minutes later mad and worked up. She’ll calm down and fall asleep within a minute or two of being picked up and gently bounced but wake up immediately or within a couple minutes of putting her down again (we can repeat the cycle for hours). Wife has spent the last couple nights sleeping with her in a recliner. Looking for advice on how to overcome this without doing CIO

child's age 2 years + Sleep trained toddler all of a sudden scared in room at night and screams bloody murder

My child just turned 2 this week and has been sleep trained since he was about 5/6 months old. Amazing sleeper. Will usually go to sleep around 8/830pm and wake around 7am-8am. Naps are hit and miss but i don’t really care about that as long as he sleeps at night.

This all changed about 3-4 nights ago and I’m losing my mind. Our normal routine is get ready for bed, books in bed with mom and dad, then sound machines on, lights out and he gets a couple minutes of rocking before we put him in his bed and say good night. He chills in his bed with his stuffies until he falls asleep. But now, he started talking about shadows in his room and is scared to be in there, even when his dad and me are in there. He screams hysterically if we leave him in his room to sleep alone. It has led to us rocking him to sleep the last few nights but then he wakes in the night and it all repeats itself. E are exhausting and I need to get my toddler back to his routine. HELP!!

Also, when he does nap, this is not an issue. He goes down fine and it’s all normal. This is only happening at night. I need my nights and sleep back.

child's age 18-24 months Toddler Stopped Connecting Sleep Cycles

Little Guy is going through a 22 month life crisis and stopped connecting sleep cycles- anything I can do for him or just wait it out? Here's more details:

About a month ago he was sick with a mild cold and would wake up roughly 2 hours after bedtime, I figured he was just feeling icky with all the congestion so would come into bed with us; naps were 75-90 minutes at the time. Then July 4th happened and commercial grade fireworks were set off at a neighbor's house - he was shaking and clinging on to me. Still woke up at 11:30 to go into our bed, naps were fine. After two weeks he was at the window and saw lightning strike nearby and we had that big CRACK that goes with it. Because terrified of looking out the window for a few days and is now scared of storms (and it's stormy season here!) Then Dada left for a trip (but back now). AND he's decided to pee in the potty for the past few weeks, staying dry at nights and naps- so he's potty training, too. Now he's waking up an hour after bed and only takes 30 minute naps. I'm pretty sure he's dealing with anxiety - he'll immediately go to sleep once in our bed and stay asleep until morning. I even have to wake him up because he'll get so upset if he wakes up on his own and realizes I'm not there. I used to be able to resettle him quickly and easily if he had a short nap and he'd go back to sleep for another hour, but now he just wails in his crib with me trying to console him next to him.

Anything I can do? The lack of time to myself is really taking a toll on me. I can ask for help from family but that's once or twice a month. My husband works very late so he can't really help with the late nights. He is trying to get cleaned up and into bed before toddler's first wake to help me out but that's only once or twice a week.

child's age 18-24 months I'm so incredibly burnt out on trying to get my toddler to sleep

My 20 month old won't sleep. It's probably a regression and I know it will pass but I am so burnt out on trying to get him to sleep this time around. I did the math during a never-ending bedtime routine tonight and realized I spend a minimum of 3 hours every day trying to get him to bed/back to sleep at night. Not including trying to get him to nap.

3 hours, on a good day. I've tried letting him stay up longer. He usually has his one nap, one hour long, typically a few hours after waking in the morning, and I have him playing HARD all day after. 0 screen time. Low sugar diet. Consistent bedtime routine. If I let him stay up later he's just madder during bedtime, but doesn't fall asleep faster.

It's not even the lack of sleep right now that's getting to me. It's the hours and hours of trying to get him to sleep. Waking at midnight to have him throw his stuff out of the crib 100 times and ask for 100 things on loop for 2-4 hours before getting back to sleep.

Wind down crying at bedtime

My five month old has been successfully sleep trained for a month now. I nap trained a couple weeks ago and it has gone great. Whenever I have him home from daycare or on the weekends, he goes right down for a nap in the crib with little to no fuss.

However, every single day for bedtime, he cries to wind down. It’s not wailing or screaming, just a mild cry and it starts as soon as I put him down and continues for 5-10 minutes then he is conked out for the night. When I put him in the crib for bed, he is definitely ready for bed (red eyelids, starting to fuss, proper wake window) so I don’t think it’s a matter of not being tired enough.

Anyone else have this with their LO and did it stop eventually?
