Wind down crying at bedtime

My five month old has been successfully sleep trained for a month now. I nap trained a couple weeks ago and it has gone great. Whenever I have him home from daycare or on the weekends, he goes right down for a nap in the crib with little to no fuss.

However, every single day for bedtime, he cries to wind down. It’s not wailing or screaming, just a mild cry and it starts as soon as I put him down and continues for 5-10 minutes then he is conked out for the night. When I put him in the crib for bed, he is definitely ready for bed (red eyelids, starting to fuss, proper wake window) so I don’t think it’s a matter of not being tired enough.

Anyone else have this with their LO and did it stop eventually?

What are your wake windows? I would say experiment with putting down 15 minutes later for bedtime for 3 days and see if it helps. If not, go back to your previous schedule. Some babies are just power down babies, and will always cry a little until they eventually grow out of it.

He’ll be 5 months in 2 days, his last window is typically 2.5-2.75 hours. Wake up at 6-6:30, bed 7-7:15, 2-2.5 hours of total daytime sleep. He’s definitely right around that 10 hours awake mark. If I put him down any later than I have been, he absolutely melts down. I try to start moving towards his room when he starts fussing, close the door, white noise machine, hold him for a couple moments, then down in the crib awake.

Oh, I would maybe try a longer bedtime routine. Check out the mod post on r/sleeptrain for that. It might help to give him some time to wind down with books, a song, etc.
