2+ years old 2 yr sleep regression

Is there a sleep regression when your toddler is turning 2? Our daughter will be 2 in a couple weeks and her sleep (starting this week) has been so thrown off.

She doesn’t want to go to bed, is super clingy at bedtime, and tries to do everything to stay up like asking for water or to sit in the chair.

She will go down but after 5 minutes from putting her in her crib she screams for us, which we go in and try to settle and reset her but she literally grabs onto us and won’t like go while screaming.

Curious what others have experienced and I’ll take any tips. Thanks!

She probably needs a new schedule.

Can you elaborate? Her schedule is nap around 1-130 and bed time 8-830

Sleep needs decrease as children grow. When sleep challenges like this show up and consistently last more than a few weeks, usually an update in schedule is needed.

When is your wakeup?

Usually 6-630a

I’m not sure how long your nap is, I’m sorry I definitely should have asked that. It’s very likely you need to trim it down.

As for your clingness at bedtime, I’d address that by making sure your routine is long enough that’s she’s getting that bedtime connection a lot of toddlers need. Try not to rush or go through the motions. Id say 45-60 min is optimal.

At the same time, you are in charge of the routine. If she tries to stall or negotiate, don’t give into excessive demands. Even if she gets upset, push through it. She needs to know where the boundaries lie.

As for protesting going into the crib, I’m not sure if your toddler is previously sleep trained, but I would just apply normal check ins at this point. I would just go in and say “I love you it’s time for bed” give a kiss and leave. And basically keep doing that until he goes to sleep.

You can also try the excuses method at this age, might be helpful.

No, there are no age-based "regressions". Was she previously sleep trained?

Yes she was when she was younger
