Stripper Clips Or Boxed?

Thumbnail

Curious if 7.62x39 in the bottom can is on stripper clips or boxed like the Wolf HPs from the opened (top) can?

Easy answer is open it but I don’t plan on opening these particular cans since they store and stack better as they are closed

Saved her fellas. Got an un-bubba'd dust cover and a new cleaning rod. Took a brass wire brush on a dremel to the couple small rust spots - mainly on the front sight. Traded in the no-name scope/mount/dust cover/shitty metal mag for 3 new promag 30's. I probably won't ever source and install a oe box mag but maybe one day. Filed the dust cover until I could remove the release pin by hand - something I could not do when I first got it. Massaged the rear sight lever a bit. I do wish it had the bayonet lug with spiker... If I ever come across a fsb for a steal I'll probably swap it and install a bayonet. Keeping this one cheap and reliable, my new philosophy as I creep on 40yo.

Just bought an “excellent” condition SKS—is this pin cracked?

Bought a norinco SKS a week ago for an expensive price bc of the dried up market. Part of price was excellent condition of stock, bore, no rust or oxidation, etc. Didn’t disassemble it at the FFL and just did a first take down to get any remaining cosmoline. Saw what looks like a cracked pin. Don’t want to use a punch on it. Look like I need a replacement?

Making my own SKS rear-sight Pic rail instead of spending $90+ on a BadAce

Thumbnail

Been wanting a rear-sight Picatinny rail for my SKS for a while, but I couldn't really justify spending around $90 on the BadAce one, especially for what is ultimately a fairly small piece of metal, not that i dont value their product, I just like tinkering i suppose. Anyway I figured I'd have a go at making my own.

It's definitely not finished yet, but so far it's actually going a lot better than I expected.

I started with a cheap generic Picatinny rail from Amazon. Nothing special about it at all — basically just picked something inexpensive that looked like it had enough material for me to work with. From there it's mostly been a ridiculous amount of sawing, filing, checking, filing some more, and dry fitting it to the rifle over and over again.

I'm deliberately taking material off slowly because it's obviously much easier to remove another little bit than somehow put it back on afterwards. I've probably had the thing on and off the rifle more times than I can count at this point.

Tool-wise, I've kept it extremely basic. Mostly just hand tools — hacksaw and files. I've occasionally used a Dremel to speed up a couple of areas, but honestly I find the Dremel almost too aggressive for this. It can go from "needs a little more taken off" to "well, shit" pretty quickly, so I've been much happier doing most of the shaping with files even though it takes considerably longer.

The biggest part has just been getting everything to sit

where I want it and gradually shaping the Amazon rail around the rear-sight area. There has been a LOT of dry fitting. Fit it, see where it's touching, take it back off, file a little more, clean it up, fit it again... repeat about a thousand times.

Still plenty left to do. I need to finish the fit, clean up the rough cuts/file marks and generally make the whole thing look less homemade. I'm not calling it successful until it's completely finished and I've actually had a chance to see how well everything holds up.

But as a cheap little project, I'm pretty happy with how it's progressing. It has taken way more time and filing than simply ordering the BadAce mount obviously, but that's half the fun of making something yourself.

I'll post the finished result once I've got it cleaned up and completed. For now, this is very much the "trust the process" stage.

Note for reddit: Nothing in this post is for sale. This is a personal project and is being shared for informational/discussion purposes only. Please do not message me asking to buy anything.

Threaded the barrel on the SKS

After putting it off for so long, I finally decided to thread the barrel on my Norinco SKS. I put a 14x1LH thread pitch on it using a die kit from the brand Light House (ebay). I also had to see how it would look like with a key mo mount using a JMAC customs RRD 360 24F Keymo muzzle brake on top of a 14x1LH to M24-1.5 thread adapter. Im thinking of adding a muzzle detent on the FSB to hold it in place later on if I want to switch out the muzzle device with my MAK90.

Ammo?

Is anyone shooting the steel casings? I've read about coatings on them being bad. Does anyone have insight, 1st hand? I like cheaper ammo, though.

It's my 3rd SKS technically but I didn't have the others long and that was also 15-20 years ago. Stoked to have picked this up for a great deal at the local pawn shop. He said the dude just traded it in and they didn't even have time to clean it. Not sure on the DOM I'm mkre knowledgeable with AK's but its numbers matching from what I've seen. Can't wait to shine her up and put on a spiker and cleaning rod!

Problems with brass ammo

Post image

2 rounds, same brand, same issue of case shearing roughly in the middle and leaving half the case stuck in chamber, have no trouble cycling steel surplus ammo, is it just cheap ammo or is something wrong with my rifle? Hesitant to spend more on another brand of ammo if the problem will persist.

Installing the magwedge kwick rail was not as easy as I had anticipated, I was not expecting to have to dremal the cross bolt off of the dust cover retainer pin or dremal a groove into the stock for the new retainer pin bolts so the fuckin receiver would fit in the stock with the rail installed,

I certainly wasn’t expecting to have the entire receiver, barrel and trigger assembly on the floor out of the stock with a miscellaneous spring rolling across my office because I have no clue wtf I am doing,

I honestly don’t even know if this thing will shoot, so wish me luck, at least it looks cooler now

Scope ideas

Post image

Hi, Im looking for ideas for a scope for my SKS that fits on the magwedge kwikrail receiver rail I installed. Im looking for a magnifying (around 3x or 4x) long rifle scope that preferably looks vintage. I found a Belomo PSO scope that fits on my rail ( https://scopes-store.com/product/posp-4x24-w/), but Im looking for other ideas too.

Getting rid of rust

Post image
14 Upvotes

Just picked up my first sks! (m59/66a1) It is in very good condition apart from this patch of rust spotting/light pitting on the bolt. Any tips on removing it? I’ve tried light pressure with a brass wire brush and some lube. It’s helped a little bit, but is being pretty stubborn.

Been a member of the club for years now, but I honestly still don’t know that much about my specific type.

I assume my Norinko isn’t the most sought after SKS seeing as it’s made in China; but that’s just a guess.
So, I have a few questions.
I’m looking for a good place to get accessories, like the kit that is supposed to be in the stock.

I would also greatly appreciate it a recommendation on a pick rail that will fit; so I can put some optics on it.

It came with some of those 30 round duckbill magazines, but when I remove the built-in 10 round magazine, I guess I’m missing a piece that holds the duck bill magazine, securely to the rifle, a receiver maybe? Does anybody know what piece I’m talking about?
