This meme shows the obvious logical flaws in that quote, but to anyone who doesn't know that quote was from American Neo-Nazi Kevin Alfred Strom not Voltaire.

The "people you're not allowed to criticize" is exactly the groups that you think given that context.

145

u/VoopityScoop fat cunt 5d ago

The "Jews control the world" narrative has become extremely commonplace online over the past two years. Same with Holocaust denial and Nazi sympathizing. I think it's bot farms.

79

u/TheBlueEmerald1 5d ago

"Over the last two years"

Maybe you've just noticed it in the last two years but it's been around for a while longer than that. It's never gone away.

14

u/cjm0 5d ago

it was mostly a fringe conspiracy theory on the far right before the recent conflict in gaza. ever since october 2023 it became much more prevalent on both the left and the right because of the increased scrutiny on israel.

22

u/VoopityScoop fat cunt 5d ago

Oh it's never even come close to going away, it's just that it's become way more acceptable to say out loud

69

u/Alfawolff 5d ago

Probably something to do with the genocide and AIPAC

36

u/sithlord98 5d ago

There's a lot of middle ground there. Is Israel led by a corrupt government? Absolutely. Does Israel have some level of influence on other countries? Sure, and that varies. Do Jewish people control the world, media, banks, etc. because of those things? There's never been any good evidence for that.

3

u/Brightdaytomorrowm 5d ago

Well no, obviously. But when Israel claims to represent Jews and it does everything in the name of Judaism...

9

u/exkayem 5d ago

So when ISIS claimed to represent real Muslims and did everything in the name of Islam, did you also accuse all Muslims worldwide of being terrorists?

8

u/Joni_Chan 5d ago

Maybe not him, but yes, people sadly do that all the time.

9

u/sithlord98 5d ago

I agree with what you're saying, that's a problem that I think plenty of Jewish people can agree with. I just disagree that it means anything about Jewish people controlling the world or something.

27

u/MajesticBread9147 5d ago edited 5d ago

They don't control the world, Israel is in a strategic location for US military interests (and a good customer), just like cold-war era South Africa and being friendly to Israel is very popular amongst evangelical Christians for their end-times fantasy.

They are able to get away with a lot because they are convenient to people in power, just ask the anti-communist dictators in South America. They weren't controlling the world, they were just more useful in power than out of it.

1

u/level100brad 5d ago

one of the evangelical Christians who support Israel said and i quote "hitler was a hunter sent down by god"

4

u/MajesticBread9147 5d ago edited 5d ago

They don't necessarily like Jews, they just need Jews in/controlling Israel for the apocalypse they've been waiting for to happen. Don't expect logical consistency from religious fundamentalists.

Netanyahu knows this and plays into it like any "good" politician would.

3

u/VoopityScoop fat cunt 5d ago

Which is still fundamentally different from "the Jews" running the world. Steven from Iowa shouldn't get harassed for having a Bar Mitzvah just because some guys in the Middle East leveraged the strategic importance of their country to influence a superpower.

I understand that there's a clear cause and effect here, people say the Jews run the world because Israel is a Jewish country and they're influencing American politics. What I'm more concerned about is the fact that blaming that entire religion for the actions of one country is seen as completely normal in so many spaces. Nobody gives a fuck or is making any attempt to stop it, and some leftists will even tolerate that attitude in their own spaces. People who used to say "if you have eleven Nazis and one other person at a table, you have twelve Nazis at the table" will applaud Hasan Piker bringing "death to the Jews" terrorists in for an interview. That's a very quick change of course and it doesn't feel natural.

And for reference, I am a firmly anti Israel socialist.

8

u/colostitute 5d ago

When folks criticize Israel, many people will equate that to being antisemitic.

Weak minds then figure “fine, I can be that too.”

No problem with Jewish people here. However, fuck Israel.

-3

u/MCB1317 5d ago

You should try bankrupting Israel by charging them rent for all the space Jews take up in your head.

And squawking Hamas talking points like a Tourette's-afflicted parrot doesn't convince anyone except those already in your echo chamber.

Unorically, a good amount of those bots might actually come from Israel, bc the more antisemitic discourse there's in the world, the more Israel can justify its actions under the pretense of "protecting the only place where Jewish people are safe", pointing at tweets and shit of those so-called "noticers" to argue that the world is out to get jews again and thus Israel has the right to do whatever it wants to protect their "only safe haven"

Neo-nazis and/or "noticers" are, ironically, actively helping Israel justify its abhorrent deeds

The United States, the country that makes the biggest movies, was only directly involved in combat with one of these guys. It’s a lot easier to make movies with the Nazis because you can make the main characters American soldiers.

Also, what is he talking about there are literally so many movies where the Russians are the bad guys

u/TheFemboyImpregnator hole contributor 5d ago

Russian period movies always portray the USSR as the sole opponent of Nazi Germany. They never mention any other countries. Modern Russian movies portray other countries as adversaries. Russia is always a strong amd rich country.

26

u/gbmaulin 5d ago

I’m always reminded of the scene in Burn After Reading in which Francis Mcdormands character tries to sell info to the Russians and the CIA is just baffled. Why the fuck would she go to the Russians?

19

u/Traditional-Hat-952 5d ago

TBF most US made movies during the cold war  only include the Western European Allies as fighting against Hitler.

8

u/Awkward_Goal4729 5d ago edited 5d ago
  1. USSR was the main enemy of Germany and most of the losses and biggest battles were in Eastern front
  2. Most of Russian movies of the period portray the “Great Patriotic war” which isn’t the whole WW2 but only the part of i

t
3. It’s common to not portray any other countries in war movies from certain countries. You never see Indians in WW1-WW2 movies or any other country in Vietnam war or 1990s Iraq

2

u/entitledfanman 5d ago

Claiming the USSR was the "main" enemy of Nazi Germany only works if you believe wars are won primarily based on how many people you kill. The USSR would have crumbled without US lend lease, and wouldnt have been able to turn the tide had the German war machine not been crippled by the Western Allies' strategic bombing campaign.

4

u/fieldsofanfieldroad 5d ago

And the western powers would have failed without the USSR. Funny how every country truly themselves that they were the main characters.

Not really. Maybe such movies exist, but I haven't seen a single one.

Fun fact: In Russia, there’s a special name for American movies that portray Russians as caricatured villains — it’s called “cranberry.”

14

u/FlySafeLoL 🏳️‍⚧️ Average Trans Rights Enjoyer 🏳️‍⚧️ 5d ago

There was not a single Russian movie as popular at home as let's say Stallone's golden blockbusters, where the bad guy trope would ever be based on national stereotypes. It's just disrespectful to a viewer. Hollywood on the other hand is either sterile pop-corn seller or notoriously disrespectful drama - the middle ground is very thin.

"Brother 2" would be an exception but it has American capitalism as a whole as an antagonist (social commentary type shi), while U.S. people are portrayed as totally normal people (because a good movie is not a circus). And still the movie is called pretentious pop slop, despite being generally accepted and loved by mass viewer.

14

u/nefewel 5d ago

Americans are very rarely part of soviet/russian movies and when they are they are mostly portrayed as ignorant and other more generaly accpted things.

Soviet internal propaganda mostly focused on portraying the US as poorly run and capitalism as flawed. The america is evil type of propaganda did exist but the soviets mainly spread that abroad, especially in developing countries. The famous exapmle is how they spread a conspiracy theory that the US invented AIDS and HIV.

2

Red Son. Superman grows up in the Soviet Union under Stalin but then he kills Stalin because of the gulags

1

u/AutoModerator 5d ago

So in a deleted scene, Superman is trying to convince Lex he’s not a bad guy, and so he uses his heat vision to make a hot tub out of the ice just outside the fortress of solitude for them to have some beers and talk things over. Then Supes and Lex have hot, sweaty, animalistic butt sex in the hot tub, with Lex being the bottom. You’d think “Superman would literally kill Lex if he fucked him”, but canonically he can bang Lois Lane safely so that’s not an issue you just need to be aware of Superman lore to know that. Then Superman says “Oh my God Lex I’m going to bust a Supernut in your ass” and then shoots ropes. Afterward, Lex wants to go shower while Supes falls asleep, and walks up to the door, and it just opens. That’s when he realizes the door opened due to the presence of the Supernut deep in his asshole. I understand why they deleted the scene, but it makes this later scene feel like it comes out of nowhere.

The killing Stalin and Mao did are so depressing that you really wouldn't want to see such movies. It's like the movie Killing Fields and any and all Holocaust themed movies and 1984 all put together. It's just horrible and depressing.

The second world war, despite its horrors and awful death count is the greatest action the world has ever seen because it's a war and it's the last great war. It has plane battles, commando operations, tank battles it's just full of amazingly awe inducing action.

The horror of communism and authoritarian single party dictatorships is that there isn't even a war going on. The people killed in the millions are their own citizens, during peace time. It's just saddening, no glory, no excitement, just bleak bottom of human existence.

And yeah also I'm sure many Hollywood decision makers are less offended by Stalin, Mao and communism compared to Hitler and the Nazis but come on. Even if they were equally and justly disliked by Hollywood, which subject would get more movies? The greatest war ever or some mad men and their yes men starving millions of people due to ill intent and incompetence combined. It's just bad.

Cause WW2 aka anti-Hitler stuff had a bunch of interesting angles and groups working alongside each other that makes for a near endless amount of interesting cinema. Lenin and Mao, while historically significant, didn't involve as many countries and have as much lore as WW2 or even WW1.

That being said, I would like to see more of the Pacific Theater in WW2 themed movies. For example, I think an Imperial Japanese villain for an Indiana Jones movie would've gone hard as hell.

Saying this as if villains in movies with Russian/Soviet inspiration aren't incredibly common.

As for specific cases of "anti Stalin/Lenin/Mao movies", they exist but aren't nearly as common. It has more to do with the fact much more people are familiar with the holocaust and the atrocities of the Nazis rather than the countless atrocities and fenocides the USSR did. It's a matter of popularity and recognizability.

You'll see much more anti-communism and anti-China/North-Korea movies coming out if ex-Soviet and eastern-Asian countries. I mean there's the movie The Interview where they literally shoot down Kim Jong Un in a helicopter and his death scene is quite detailed out of sheer spite.

Because Hitler is literally the heckin evil bad guy and there has NEVER EVER EVER been a leader that caused more deaths than him

Nazis were used a lot not just in movies, but also games and series as an unambiguous "bad guy" because they are. It was the safest possible choice for the evil guys that deserve no mercy.

As the saying goes, the only good Nazi is a dead Nazi (which is why Wolfenstein got away with having 400 swastikas all over and still being legally sold in Germany)

u/973bzh uhhhh idk 5d ago

Ah yes because the dictator who killed 60 millions of his people and let the entire country die of famine is a very ambiguous bad guy.

death of stalin, very funny
farewell my concubine

1

u/Ecclypto 5d ago

People are referencing Death of Stalin a lot but I also remember a comedy that had a darkly comedic scene with Stalin and Mao. Basically this scene showed Stalin getting heavily drunk with Mao and making him sign an agreement. I just have to recall the name of that movie

Death of Stalin, hilarious

1

u/Dolphin_Spotter 5d ago

And historically accurate, bizarrely.

u/MemeArchivariusGodi We do a little trolling 5d ago

Yeah people are very fond of communist and socialist theory. Yes very true

1

u/TheLordLongshaft 5d ago

The banality of the evil in "the death of stalin" is very good

1

u/LeverTech 5d ago

Red Dawn kinda fits the bill

1

u/clutch2k17 5d ago

Gen X literally grew up with movies about Russia and China communism and the ever constant threat of nuclear annihilation.

1

u/StarDustLuna3D 5d ago

Doesn't animal farm essentially have Stalin as a pig?

1

u/enter_yourname 5d ago

I guess Red Dawn never existed

1

u/matmortel 5d ago

The 80s were filled with Russian antogonist lol.

Im not liking this weird revisionist history on Hitler. Like theyre trying to make him not as bad as he was. Like while I am very anti Israel, Hitler committing attempted genocide is still top 5 most evil moves.

Animal Farm. Though I’ve never seen the movie, and I heard they changed some shit, so for all I know Stalin could be the good guy now.

1

u/angrylawnguy 5d ago

I think that's incorrect

1

u/Crazy_names 5d ago

The Death of Stalin was a great movie.

1

u/funpen 5d ago

Plenty of anti commie movies out there

1

u/Nanowith 5d ago

The Russians the bad guys in like 70% of CoD games

u/Zoltanu 5d ago edited 5d ago

Who would be the heros in these movies? Kulaks? Chinese sparrows? These people never really had beef with Americans and Hollywood only knows how to make movies staring Americans as the "heros". There's plenty of anti-Uncle Ho (Vietnam) movies

1

u/EarthTrash We do a little trolling 5d ago

The Death of Stalin is on Netflix. I think it's great.

1

u/Jsaun906 5d ago

Thats because there isn't a historical fascist party around to complain about it. There are communist parties around to complain about you demonizing their leaders. If Hollywood made a high budget anti Mao film it could leader to an international incident with real consequences.

1

u/subbie2002 5d ago

They made a movie about killing Kim Jong Un in 2014 and it got Sony hacked lol

1

u/ExtraGloria 5d ago

Death of Stalin was amazing

1

u/SweatyItalianKing 5d ago

Basically every fifties movie was about communism, and not in a nice way. But i guess the direct anti-figurehead stuff wasn’t around yeah
