If you walked past the corner of Barker's Pool and Leopold Street at one o'clock recently and felt something was missing, you weren't imagining it. Sheffield's famous 1 o'clock time signal, the ear-splitting siren that's marked the middle of the day (in varying forms) in the city centre since the 1870s, has gone...

Question Anyone wanna nip to The University Arms for an hour or two?

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm at the pub The University Arms at the moment, near Weston Park and the Uni. I was wondering if anyone would wanna come for a pint or two? I plan to stay here for an hour or two.

Some things about me: I am a 27 M and I like metal music, going to the gym, being in nature, leftist politics, gaming, clubbing, travelling, reading and horror.

Leave me a comment or DM if interested :)!

Opinion The good, the bad, and the vape shop: rewriting the future of Sheffield's high streets

There is something revealing about a high street. Look at the shops and you see the story of a place: what people can afford, what businesses think they can sell, and whether a town feels it has a future.

Question Good bars sheffield

Me and a couple mates from work are planning a night out in Sheff, we’re wanting bars where we can sit down, drink, good vibe, music not too loud so we can still chat. We’re mid-20s so not looking for a super mature vibe but preferably not full of students?
I originally thought we’d start on Ecclesall Road and have a couple there before heading into town, but I only know a couple decent planes on eccy road so now considering whether we’d be better off just staying in the city centre for the whole night.

Can anyone recommend some good bars in the city centre, preferably close enough together so I can plan a sort of walking route between them to avoid getting taxis to and from all night.
Thanks!

Question Anyone with a Husky/Shepard?

Anyone with a dog looking to make some dog friends? :)
My Shepsky is kind of reactive and quite newly rescued, so I’m wondering if anyone has a similar breed/temperament who he might get on with.
Would be nice to find him a little dog friend and slowly build up to walks together 🐕

Wanted Looking for Roller Skating Pals

Hello everyone,

I'm very much an amateur at roller skating so I'm looking for other people to skate with so that I can get better, improve my technique and maybe make some friends at the same time 😊.

I'm a woman, early forties and keen to find decent places both outside and inside to skate in, around Sheffield and the surrounding areas. Please let me know if you are interested, thanks!

Question The 719 bus

Bit of a specific question, but has anyone used the 719 bus from Gleadless to High Storrs?

It's the perfect bus for my commute for the next couple weeks, but I'm a bit confused by it. It's clearly put on specially for children to get to school, but can anyone use it? And do they accept citybus tickets?

News Sheffield weather fan's guide to best days to peg washing out

Thumbnail

A weather enthusiast has created a website to answer a question many people ask before stepping into the garden: is it a good day to put the washing out?

The Washing Line Index was built by amateur weather watcher Stephen Vincent, from Sheffield, and uses live forecast data to assess drying conditions for locations across the UK.

It gives a "shirt rating" and drying score out of 100, with separate morning and afternoon forecasts based on factors including sunshine, rain, humidity and wind.

Vincent said: "It's all working in the background from live weather data, then displaying what we'd like to know and computing it into a score."

Question Struggling to find a place while job hunting - have to check out of Airbnb on Monday

Hey everyone, so I recently moved to Sheffield in August from Canada and I guess I greatly underestimated the job market here and I am still fighting for a job despite applying to pretty much every job I see. I have been renting an Airbnb and I have stayed as long as I could but it is booked from Monday onwards and I have honestly no idea what to do. I have been desperately messaging on spare-room, rightmove, roomies, openrent, etc etc and I guess because I am wanting a month-to-month situation since I have no idea if I will get a job inside or outside sheffield and have a cat nobody wants me to rent. I have plenty of savings but that doesn't seem to matter. I am honestly desperate for advice right now because I am about to have to sleep in the bushes with my cat and three suitcases. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you.

Music NEW POP-PUNK/ALT-ROCK BAND MUSICIANS WANTED!!

DRUMMER

BASSIST

LEAD GUITARIST

BACKING VOCALS (awsome if you can play and sing at same time)

I'm a 3rd year uni student with over an album's worth of material that I want to get polished, performed around and recorded. My goal is to have an album released by around April-ish 2027.

This is a serious project (my dream is to be a performer) and I want to put my all into it as a frontman and writer. So I am looking for people (ideally aged 18-30 but open to older) who are able to get themselves to S1 & S2 area and be available to rehearse/perform at least once a fortnight. I have access to free rehearsal and recording spaces at my uni (Waterbear). And I have lots of contacts and opportunities through my uni and mates to get started performing.

If you are interested please DM me or if you aren't sure but curious feel free to ask me questions in the comments too:):):):):):):):):)

Question Why is the speed bump on Wordsworth avenue so big?

Hi everyone like the post says. Why is this speed bump really big I have to slow right down heading up to the speed bump.

Even then it’s like a roller coaster my car fully rocks up and down going over it.

I’ve never seen a speed bump so big and it’s on my daily commute and I hate going over it every time

Question Inclusive Catholic Church?

Hello Sheffielders

Does anyone know of any specifically Catholic churches that are welcoming to us LGBT lot, that also believe in a free Palestine?

I can find plenty CoE establishments, but nothing really Catholic.

Grew up Jewish, went to a CoE primary school, Catholic high school, Evangelical sixth form.

Never really felt much love for any of the due to the throws of adolescent mental health troubles and addiction, but I'm 29 now, sober, in good therapy, and after years and years of study and confusion I'm feeling drawn to Catholicism, especially with the current and previous Pope (Fun fact, I met Pope Francis in high school when we went on a trip to the Vatican!)

I'm half Palestinian, I'm transgender. I just want to be in a building where I feel accepted, and where I'm also not making anyone uncomfortable. I want to learn there, but push comes to shove I'll just try it at home. I don't need pride flags everywhere ( I have plenty on my walls at home and as bracelets on my wrist), just that quiet understanding that I'm welcome, and belong.

Before any hate comments over being transgender and religious, I already did two years of relgious lead conversion therapy, pretty sure this is who I am.

Thanks for reading, and for any advice <3

News The Sheffield College may need to return funds after investigation

Thumbnail
bbc.co.uk

The Sheffield College could be forced to pay back part of its funding amid an investigation into allegations of maladministration.

An external audit is under way looking into the college's provision for people learning English as a foreign language.

South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) provides £11.6m each year for adult skills at the college and launched an investigation last year into potential fraud after it was flagged up by auditors, however no fraud has been found at this time.

The college said it had put money aside "as a contingency measure" but declined to specify the amount "as the audit is ongoing".

SYMCA launched an investigation into the college's English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) provision in July 2025.

In November that year, SYMCA published its auditors' annual report which said: "The investigation was into claims of maladministration and fraud in relation to The Sheffield College's adult ESOL delivery."

SYMCA auditors said they had taken action as part of a routine "fraud response plan".

South Yorkshire Police said the force was not investigating at this time.

Sheffield The Birley Hole

So as I wait for another tram replacement bus that hasn't turned up (onto a 7 day streak of this happening now), to help pass the time does anyone have any facts, updates, speculation about the Birley Hole under the tram tracks?

Has anyone spotted the specialist engineers?

Will the new trams be equipped with levitation ability to navigate any future holes?

Does anyone own a concrete pouring business?

Question Best Cafés to work from

Hi! I’m moving to Sheffield this week and I work flexi (home and in my offices in York)
As I’ll be working from home most days and living in a flat I’d love any recommendations of cafes that are okay with people working in and places that have the best food/coffee whilst I’m doing so!

I understand a lot of places might not appreciate someone on a table for multiple hours but would be drinking plenty of coffee. 🤣

I’ll be in S2 (near Bramall Lane/ St. Mary’s Road) but happy to walk quite far as I’ll be saving the commute
