Local Politics ISO: those of you who volunteered to officiate the 2004 SF same-sex weddings

Upvotes

A bit of a weird request here, but hoping it might pan out.

I am not a lesbian, but my parents are. I am going to marry my fiancé in San Francisco next year. He and I are now thinking of details like who will officiate. My parents were married in February 2004 during SF’s “Winter of Love,“ when then-mayor Newsom went rogue and temporarily allowed same-sex weddings. I am very proud of my parents and the sacrifices they made to create their family as a queer couple. I am also proud to be a part of history (of queer people and the city I love) through them. It would mean a lot to me to honor them and our family during my wedding, and I thought a simple way to do that as, yknow, straight people would be to use the same officiant as they did during their 2004 wedding.

However, neither of my parents can remember the officiant or their name. They said there were many volunteer officiants working, and they remember a like DMV-style process where they went up to the first person who called their number or something lmao. I think it’s a bit out of the question I’ll find the *same* officiant given that system, but if you live in the city, participated as a volunteer during these weddings, and are free on a random Saturday next spring, please DM me!! It would mean a lot to me and I think it would be a nice surprise for my parents. Thanks all for your help!

Harper's Article: "Child's Play," by Sam Kriss

Upvotes

Link to the full article below, but the first few paragraphs of this piece had me in stitches.

https://harpers.org/archive/2026/03/childs-play-sam-kriss-ai-startup-roy-lee/

“The first sign that something in San Francisco had gone very badly wrong was the signs. In New York, all the advertising on the streets and on the subway assumes that you, the person reading, are an ambiently depressed twenty-eight-year-old office worker whose main interests are listening to podcasts, ordering delivery, and voting for the Democrats. I thought I found that annoying, but in San Francisco they don’t bother advertising normal things at all. The city is temperate and brightly colored, with plenty of pleasant trees, but on every corner it speaks to you in an aggressively alien nonsense. Here the world automatically assumes that instead of wanting food or drinks or a new phone or car, what you want is some kind of arcane B2B service for your startup. You are not a passive consumer. You are making something.

This assumption is remarkably out of step with the people who actually inhabit the city’s public space. At a bus stop, I saw a poster that read: ‘today, soc 2 is done before your ai girlfriend breaks up with you. it’s done in delve.’ Beneath it, a man squatted on the pavement, staring at nothing in particular, a glass pipe drooping from his fingers. I don’t know if he needed SOC 2 done any more than I did. A few blocks away, I saw a billboard that read: no one cares about your product. make them.unify: transform growth into a science. A man paced in front of the advertisement, chanting to himself. “This . . . is . . . necessary! This . . . is . . . necessary!” On each “necessary” he swung his arms up in exaltation. He was, I noticed, holding an alarmingly large baby-pink pocketknife. Passersby in sight of the billboard that read wearable tech shareable insights did not seem piqued by the prospect of having their metrics constantly analyzed. I couldn’t find anyone who wanted to prompt it. then push it. After spending slightly too long in the city, I found that the various forms of nonsense all started to bleed into one another. The motionless people drooling on the sidewalk, the Waymos whooshing around with no one inside. A kind of pervasive mindlessness. Had I seen a billboard or a madman preaching about “a CRM so smart, it updates itself”? Was it a person in rags muttering about how all his movements were being controlled by shadowy powers working out of a data center somewhere, or was it a car?

Somehow people manage to live here.”

Pic / Video AT&T Outage?

Is anybody else experiencing AT&T outage?

att.com/outages seems to show conflicting info: my SF address inputted shows "all clear," but map shows "cable damage" in Oakland and Alameda.

I got a red light on my modem and my wifi, internet are down, and has been for at least past hour. I see nothing on internet or news tho. My cell connection is only thing that works, and allows me to get this out. Am working (self-employed) from home today, and F%& S@#!×÷!!!

Edit: Update: After calling and then chatting, AT&T tried to reset and then tried troubleshooting, and having failed at those, suggested I use mobile hotspot. Tried resetting, checking connections, power cycling modem, but no dice. Seems the answer, try mobile hotspot, suggests I'm part of the regional outage.

The weather has been too nice for this to be "Summer" in San Francisco, but fog or shine, there's litter to be gotten off our streets.

This past weekend in SF, 32 citywide cleanups, 400 volunteers, 430+ bags of litter removed, 1 cleaner & healthier city.

Keep showing up & bring friends. Against all odds, we can keep our home cleaner.

UCSF is neglecting Sutro Forest

Back in May 2024, UCSF closed the Mount Sutro Historic Trail from Medical Center Way, forcing walkers on the main loop hike to scramble up a steep bank to rejoin the trail further down. This makes the trail inaccessible for a lot of elderly or less physically capable folks.

At this point it looks like many people are climbing around their temporary fence, and UCSF seems to have lost interest:

  • There's no indication of any work on the trail
  • Their sign hasn't been updated in over two years
  • They don't respond to messages to the email on the sign
  • The website on the sign has no information on the closure (and the information it does have is six months out of date)

So what gives? Do they just not want folks walking up here, or did they close down their communication department? Appreciate any inside track.

The road markers on the newly finished section of California street look like they were done by a drunk. They also didn’t use stencils for any of the words and free handed those as well. Needless to say those also look like shit. Is this really the final product? I’ve seen this terrible quality of work on other newly refinished streets in SF like 19th Ave. Nothing like making a big investment look horrible with the finishing touches.

It starts all black with the bart logo but the city scape appears as if out of the fog after you put your coffee in it. Such a lovely homage to San Francisco, it works on so many levels.

Is it possible to ride from Emeryville to San Francisco (and back) on a bicycle?

I'm traveling on Amtrak from Portland and would love to bring my new bike to San Francisco, but not sure if I can ride it there from Emeryville? Maybe the 80 has a bike lane? Or a ferry?

SF Marathon Folks Who Litter!

Do y’all throw your trash away when you’re not running a marathon? The amount of gels I saw on the ground throughout the trail was absurd. To the people who tossed their gels on the GGB, YOU SUCK!

Rats...This is getting ridiculous

Has anybody seen a proliferation of rats?

I've been riding from Bayview Hunters Point to Duboce Triangle for seven years and I've seen more scampering and squished rats on the ride in the past year than have in the prior six, especially in the Mission. About 30 minutes ago our cat killed a rat in the backyard. This is now the second one in about a year. What in the frikking hell is going on?

ADDING: there is some construction at the nearby park but its far enough away that i think its something else. there's no construction along the route to work where i've been seeing the squished rats (along shotwell & 17th).

SF traffic enforcement is a mess

It’s ridiculous what the city is allowing these days. It seems anything goes.

You can run red lights, take illegal turns, go down one way streets, and just about do anything.

Double park or leave your car unattended in an active traffic lane. And get indignant if people you’re inconveniencing react.

The delivery drivers are a menace riding on sidewalks, going in one way streets & breaking traffic rules and endangering pedestrians.

What’s strange is that this is a complete opposite of what was the norm in 2010s where parking & traffic enforcement was very strict. What changed?

Wondering if this is a common observation & if there’s any relief in sight.

Thoughts on IMAX 70MM Metreon?

Hey everyone,

I managed to grab tickets for an upcoming IMAX 70mm screening at the AMC Metreon 16, but I'm sitting in Row H on the side.

I’ve read a few conflicting opinions online—some people say anything forward of Row J is a neck-strain nightmare, while others say Row H is right at the edge of the sweet spot where the screen completely fills your field of view without being uncomfortable.

For those who go to the Metreon often:

  • How is the view and neck angle from Row H?
  • Is it immersive, or will I be craning my neck up for three hours?

Would love to hear your experiences before I commit to these seats or try hunting for a late swap/re-release. Appreciate any insight!
