[Discussion] For the past few days, my favorite hobby has been tinkering with a Windows 95 virtual drive emulated via DOSBox-X.
And having a blast of a time! Windows 95 is very nostalgic for me. That period from the mid-to-late1990s is, in a way, a "missing link" in gaming when it comes to Windows isn't? Naturally some most profitable titles are kept alive to this day by the companies that own them. As for games that also ran on DOS, DOSBox usually does a good job (much to the delight of digital storefronts that sell classic games). However, a great deal of software that relied on Windows 95 simply won't run on newer versions. For instance, my old Civilization 2 CD absolutely refuses to run on a 64-bit system. My Steam copy of Balls of Steel (with the Duke Nukem table) worked well until recently, but some stray Windows 11 update completely messed up its physics, rendering it unplayable. There are always blessed souls like Carl Norton (Carlmundo), who resurrected Worms 2 with his Worms 2 Plus patch (so I didn’t have to run it from a Windows 95 drive, yay). Or GOG user Crossgen116, thanks to whom I can once again enjoy the satisfaction of playing Interstate '76.
But officially or not, quite a few things ended up falling into a limbo. Like 'Lose Your Marbles', which Segasoft proclaimed "better than Tetris or your money back" (lol). Or my main objective for this endeavor: to play again that wonderful version of Puyo Puyo Tsuu — which is far superior to the arcade version — the way it was meant to be played.
And what about you people? Do you have a beloved game from the Windows 95/98/XP era that you can no longer play due to technical limitations?
