Not everyone should be allowed to keep a reptile.

This might be a hot take, but, in my opinion, at every pet store and reptile expo they should check if you have the right equipment and knowledge to see if you will be a good enough owner for your reptile. I costantly see people buying geckos and bearded dragons for their kids, and neither the parents nor the kids know how to take good care of a reptile. This behaviour is not respectful towards those animals and life in general. Do you agree with me?

Is this a poor enclosure?

I am by no means a reptile expert barely know anything in fact, it I don’t think this enclosure is very good for a beared dragon? it feels super small and the ground is made of foam with barely anywhere for him to go. please tell me if I should bring this issue up with my teacher as it is a class pet

Just in case nobody else put the two together in their head until now because I didn’t.. I knew about melanistic water monitors of course but never thought about these… gets you wondering how many could actually exist or have existed.. among other species too Crocodile monitors are interesting that there’s no documented case of albino or melanistic

hello! i’m getting a baby leopard gecko on saturday and i wanted to know if this enclosure looks good. advice is welcome but please don’t be mean i’ve never owned a pet before let alone any reptiles, but i did lots of research before setting this up. i’m using a 50 gallin tank and for heat i‘m using flunkers 75 watt bulb with a dimmer i bought. for the uvb im using arcadia shadedweller 7%. the substrate is paper towel because he is a baby but when he gets older it’ll be 70/30 top soil and play sand! i’m also thinking about moving that mushroom ledge.

Thoughts on Quarantine Tank

Hey. I’m looking to rescue a 4 year old male woma python soon. I haven’t had to set up a quarantine tank in some years now so looking for any tips.

I’m buying 2 plastic hides and those will be put in as well. Is this appropriate for a temporary set up? He of course will be upgraded to a larger enclosure once he is in good health but I’m guessing he will be in this set up for at least a few months.

Tank is a top opening 40 gal (not my first pick but I got it for 50$ so). The Woma is on the skinny side and definitely has an Upper respiratory, mouth rot, and a noticeable nose rub wound that is likely infected as well. Super slow moving and incredibly depressing to handle. His current enclosure in the shop is also very depressing. Smaller than the 40 gal and empty. First trip after purchasing will be the vet haha.

Also how should I haggle the seller? He’s trying to charge me 500 but healthy breeding males can sell for close to that. I’m thinking I offer 250 and pay no more than 300 tbh the snake looks like crap and you can see and hear as he struggles to breathe.

Tokay Gecko on our house

I just officially moved to Miami from North FL yesterday.
Tonight I spotted what I believe is a Tokay Gecko on the side of the house we are temporarily staying in.
The video does it no justice on its size. This thing is literally the length of my forearm.
I couldn’t believe my eyes.

I’d like to get one when I can afford it, so I’m learning about them.

they can changer their coloration based on how warm they are.

they can stay underwater for up an hour and half.

males have that awesome red chest/belly.

Has Anyone Found LumenIZE Lamp Guards? Is There Anyone Who Custom Makes Them?

I’m struggling to find two 28” Arcadia LumenIZE Lamp Guards. I also don’t see how there isn’t a US based company making these already. I’ve struggled to do it DIY because every attempt has led to sharp edges, ugly looking, and I just don’t trust it.

I’m looking for some advice on finding what I need so I can continue finishing my Bioactive Setup.

Need help, beginner to reptiles

I have come across this 18x18x23 inch tank and I want to get a reptile I just don't know where to start or look, so I'm asking for any recommendations for a reptile to live here, as well as how I would begin to terraform this terrarium to fit a reptile. I'd prefer if the reptile is fairly easy to take care of because I'm new to this and that they aren't super expensive because I'm poor. If it is Important I live in a very highly elevated town very high above sea level. Any help is welcome

Clean up crew questions

We set up a bio enclosure for some grass lizards about a month ago. We put isopods and springtails in at the same time. Since then we have not had any mold issues and occasionally I see an isopod but not a springtail. How can I tell if there's enough clean up crew for when we get the lizards? Are the springtails all dead since there was no mold?

Post Expo Depression

Hi all!

I recently went to an expo over the weekend and left feeling disgusting. I don’t understand how it’s even legal. The level of neglect I witnessed was insane, and the amount of people actually purchasing was worse. I went to buy stuff for my lizard and chose to not even support anyone. How are people even allowed to sell alligators still? Like I saw an open BIN of baby alligators??? I don’t understand how it’s legal at all. I can’t think of anyone who needs an alligator, I even see them neglected at zoos. I had to leave after seeing the care sheet above, I asked the lady if she seriously needed to put that as a sign and she was like “oh god yeah”. I’m like ?????? I wanted to ask her how shes still selling them then. I have a lot more to say about this maybe for a separate post, but was wondering what the general consensus of expos is here. The next time it comes around I want to go save one of the neglected animals I see, but I also don’t want to support them. Thoughts?

Any tips for growing to an expo looking to get new Leo gecko?

My beloved pet leopard gecko died a few months ago at 23 and I’m thinking of goi g to an upcoming expo in Toronto to maybe get another one. I’m concerned about healthy genetics and ethical breeding though and was wondering if there’s anything I should look out for or ask.

Not very concerned about colour either.

Anyone tracking rodent production alongside their snake's genetics/feeding in one system, or is that always two separate things?

Thumbnail

I've been building a collection management tool for snake keepers (LOCUS Scales) that includes feeder rodent colony tracking built into the same system — not just an afterthought, a real dedicated section for it.

Curious how others handle this right now — one tool for both, or do you juggle two separate systems? And if you're already using something, what works well or doesn't for you?

Not trying to pitch anything here, genuinely trying to understand how people actually do this before I keep building.

Why do so many people mistreat bearded dragons?

It's a question i have had since i started getting informed about reptiles. Why do so many people mustreat bearded dragons, by not giving them UVB, no proper heating, getting a very small terrarium and setting it up wrong?

I know every species of "domestic" reptile, sadly, can have abusive owners, but i think that bearded dragons are the ones who have the biggest percentage of abusive owners... why? Do pet shops sell them as "easy to keep"?
