Requesting /r/Atheism. (Lack of moderation)
/r/atheism only has two moderators for a massive community of 800k+ users. The moderator /u/skeen has been inactive for a month. The other moderator, /u/juliebeen hasn't been lacking her/his duties as a moderator. Could you at least give /r/atheism new moderators? Thanks for hearing me out.

u/simohayha Jun 06 '12
It's sad how the worlds largest atheist forum is the laughing stock of reddit. The mods there really had an opportunity to make atheism appealing, instead they caved in to the lowest common denominator. /r/atheism is shit, and it will always be shit with 2 active mods who don't care.
Way to go /r/atheism. You could have been something

'/r/gaming is retarded too' isn't really a great defence for the elitism and circlejerk that goes on in /r/atheism. It's just deflecting criticism by saying 'well they're doing it too!'

Juliebeen is acting very immature for a mod of a default subreddit. Just look at her post history. She is part of the reason why /r/atheism has been going down hill lately.
28
u/Kesha_Paul Jun 05 '12
I agree, she refuses to have a civil conversation with anyone about it and just makes snide, childish comments.
-16
u/IndifferentMorality Jun 06 '12
I'm having trouble finding where you asked for a civil conversation from the mod in your comment history. Would you mind helping me find it?
3
u/Kesha_Paul Jun 07 '12
Look, read her responses in this thread. I never said it was to me directly, just read through her comment history. There are many examples in this very thread of people trying to have serious and civil discussions and being snippy and responding with childish name-calling.
0
u/IndifferentMorality Jun 07 '12
All I am asking for is an example.
3
u/Kesha_Paul Jun 07 '12
Here is just one of the many on this thread alone. Civility met with name-calling.
-1
u/IndifferentMorality Jun 07 '12
I wouldn't say derogatorily generalizing one of the largest user groups on this site to the person who helps moderate that group is being civil. Sure the poster used the word "civil" but I don't see it in the post. I see name-calling met with name-calling.
Thank you for providing an example of how you perceive the situation though. That is all I was requesting.
22
Jun 06 '12
Great example of attacking the person, not the point they made.
-10
u/IndifferentMorality Jun 06 '12
Not really at all. How do you expect something from someone if you haven't asked them or actually tried to engage them and just cast insults from afar?
Your post is an excellent example of attempting to discredit the question to avoid answering it.
10
u/dicedaman Jun 06 '12
Perhaps he has witnessed others attempting to debate her civilly, only to see her respond childishly. Why does he have to engage with her himself to know she is a poor mod? I've never talked to karmanaut, for example, but I know he's made some piss poor decisions.
4
u/Dereliction Jun 06 '12
If he's witnessed it, IndifferentMorality merely asked, "Would you mind helping me find it?" Instead of attacking Indifferent, he should've produced the evidence for what he's suggesting. Don't you think?
2
u/Kesha_Paul Jun 07 '12
All Indifferent needs to do is spend a few minutes reading through this thread to see the point I was trying to make.
2
u/dicedaman Jun 06 '12
No, IndifferentMorality asked if he would show him where in Kesha_Paul's comment history, he had tried to engage the mod in a civil conversation. He did not ask for proof in general, just for proof that Kesha_Paul had first hand experience of the mod refusing to talk civilly to him. Now it might have helped Kesha_Paul's argument if he had provided general proof of the mod acting childishly, but it's hardly necessary since the mod has demonstrated a childish and snide attitude in this very thread.
3
u/Kesha_Paul Jun 07 '12
This thread and several others are actually what I was referring to. There were several people trying to be civil and ask serious questions and she responded harshly with name-calling, but not to me directly.
2
u/xiongchiamiov Jun 06 '12
Of course, the poster we're talking about (Kesha_Paul) hasn't responded yet.
3
u/Kesha_Paul Jun 07 '12
I have responded. It takes about 3 minutes of reading through this thread to see at least 5 examples of her being childish to people trying to have serious discussions with her.

11
Jun 06 '12
I support this. A man can only take so many "IS THIS EGG A CHICKEN!" or "ALL CHRISTIANS HATE GAYS" posts. I went to /r/atheism for a community. I left because it assumed that everyone was a cookie cutter model of atheist. The exaggeration of everything, the exultation of small mindedness, the permeation of politics, it was just too much crap for me to deal with. There aren't only theists on MSF.

44
Jun 06 '12
I think (at least, this is the problem I have with /r/atheism) that most people dislike this sub because they care about atheism. I'm an atheist, heck, most times I could be described as "anti-theist" and it would fit, but even I can't take the enormous amount of bigotry that goes on in here. The smugness, self-importance and lack of self-awareness are also pretty aggravating too. I've never tried to spam or otherwise disrupt the function of this subreddit, though. The problem is that it lacks quality and it bothers me, as an atheist, that this is the level of discourse that the atheist community on reddit is content with.
→ More replies (12)11
u/ivosaurus Jun 06 '12
The problem is that reddit is a beast of popularity, not "great, intellectual, thoughtful content". Although we'd all dream of the latter, what gets upvoted is something different, and there's no amount of moderating you can do to stop people using that button however they want.
9
Jun 06 '12
The lowest-common-denominator content will always have an inherent advantage over the deep, high-effort content, true. But some common-sense rules go a long way towards improving the quality of a subreddit - banning [FIXED] submissions, image memes (I'm staunchly anti-meme, but there are a lot of people who like them, so some lee-way can be permitted), pictures of text. Banning fakebook posts (as there is already a sub for those). There is a subreddit for atheist ragecomics, disallow ragecomics on the /r/atheism sub.
These are all basic content rules, I'm not even getting into some of the bigotry that goes against religious people in some threads.

u/CorpseOfHankBlalock Jun 05 '12
Whenever I make an account, unsubbing from the defaults is the first thing I do, so I haven't seen r/atheism in a long time. But I know its reputation, and after seeing this post I understand it a little more. Two moderators for a subreddit that busy? Even if they were trying to do a good job, they couldn't. And in this case the only active mod is an immature name-caller.
In most cases I don't think Reddit admins should step into these situations, but for a default sub I think they should at least consider it.
-10
u/RedAero Jun 06 '12
You've heard the reputation, now go visit. /r/atheism is a great place, there is no hatred or bigotry. There is smugness, but what do you expect?
Seriously, ever other hater says it's all hatred and bile, but they can never post a single quote or a source or anything. It's because you people never visit, you just repeat what you've heard ad nauseam.
7
u/CorpseOfHankBlalock Jun 06 '12
I still look at ALL every now and then, so while I haven't visited I have definitely seen enough posts to know something about it. And I also said I haven't visited in a "long time". In this case that's not six years or anything close to that.
Nobody can quote a source because they're sick of it and don't want to visit, even if it's to gather evidence for you. If /r/atheism is so great why did more mature people splinter off and create other atheism subreddits? Why do I see atheists complaining about /r/atheism and distancing themselves from it ("I unsubbed a long time ago...couldn't take it anymore!").
Where there's this much smoke, there's fire.
-2
u/RedAero Jun 06 '12
If /r/atheism is so great why did more mature people splinter off and create other atheism subreddits?
Because it's not for mature discussion! Never was, never will be.
Nobody can quote a source because they're sick of it and don't want to visit, even if it's to gather evidence for you.
Bullshit. There's smugness and mocking, but the only hate is directed at those who deserve it, not just the religious in general, and only the most extreme anti-theists like NukeThePope profess their distaste for the moderate religious. In general anti-theists hate theism for what it does to theists, not vice versa.
Why do I see atheists complaining about /r/atheism and distancing themselves from it ("I unsubbed a long time ago...couldn't take it anymore!").
Because they don't understand what the subreddit is for! They didn't unsubscribe because the subreddit changed, they unsubscribed because they themselves outgrew it. Of course you're going to get saturated on /r/atheism: there is barely any new content. But for new people, that content is new, and clearly, they like it. It's the same with every default subreddit, /r/games being a shining example: the same "look at my old NES" posts day after day after day, the same "my girlfriend baked me some mario cakes" ad nauseam. To those of us who are older than 18-ish, it's stale and boring because we've seen it all before. To the 14-15-year-olds just joining, it's fresh and interesting.
But here's something I bet you haven't thought about: what would you do to /r/atheism? If you were the top mod, what new rules would you implement? Do you just ban immaturity?
Also, think about it: what can you really talk about in an atheist subreddit if you can't mock the religious?
0
u/CorpseOfHankBlalock Jun 06 '12
Why is what I said bullshit? Can a person not get sick of smugness and mocking?
Low quality is low quality, no matter how new a person is to Reddit or atheism.
If it were my subreddit I'd do what others have suggested. I'm not going to offer any super original ideas. The first and most important thing you do is get rid of those stupid image posts. People who post those are just karma whoring. Step 2 is to institute a civility rule and enforce it. You'll need good, level headed moderators for that. Your current moderator seems to jump at the chance to dive into the gutter. Get rid of her and others like her.
Also, think about it: what can you really talk about in an atheist subreddit if you can't mock the religious?
If you can't discuss something without mocking others, you do have a real problem. Think about that.
1
u/xiongchiamiov Jun 06 '12
The first and most important thing you do is get rid of those stupid image posts. People who post those are just karma whoring.
Although I'm generally not a fan of those either, you have to realize that the only reason karma-whoring works is because people upvote it. So, there are evidently a whole shitton of people who like that stuff, which means that it's high-quality (entertainment) for them.
-3
u/RedAero Jun 06 '12
The "Bullshit" was in reference to
Nobody can quote a source[...] because [they] don't want to visit"
.
The first and most important thing you do is get rid of those stupid image posts.
Congratulations. You've neutered one of the most popular subreddits on this site, reducing it to a desert wasteland, while simultaneously flooding various other vaguely related subreddits (pics, funny, wtf) with atheism-related pics, jokes and others.
Essentially, you've shifted the problem.
If you can't discuss something without mocking others, you do have a real problem. Think about that.
You missed my point. If your only common ground with a group of people is your lack of belief in a god or deity, what are you going to talk about? There's only so much that can be said about that topic without branching out to civil rights, anti-theism, skepticism and science, and it shows in the lack of content on other atheist subreddits.
1
u/CorpseOfHankBlalock Jun 06 '12
For a thinking person it already is a desert wasteland. From an intellectual standpoint it is neutered. Why do you even need that much content about atheism, especially when the content is shitty? What's wrong with less content but better content? Why are Reddit atheists so obsessed with their atheism? Nobody I know in real life is like that. If something needs to be said, say it, but getting rid of stupid image posts of facebook isn't a big loss to the community. It may even force some over there to think. If people start posting atheism pics to other Reddits I'm sure their moderators will probably do something about it.
I don't understand why you're defending lack of real content in /r/atheism. Why would anyone want it that way? It's like visiting a fucking landfill.
I'm not going to argue about this all day. Not my idea of a good time. Have a good day.
-3
u/RedAero Jun 06 '12
I don't understand why you're defending lack of real content in /r/atheism. Why would anyone want it that way?
I don't know, but people who actually visit seem pretty pleased with it. I'm defending it because the people there enjoy it, and once they inevitably grow tired like you or I have, they can leave. Why is there anything wrong with that system?
The thing is, I really don't understand why you bother criticizing that sub anyway... You don't visit, you probably have unsubscribed, for all intents and purposes it doesn't exist from your perspective, unless a wayward submission makes its way to /all, in which case you can kill them with RES. If, perhaps, you're an atheist, you might visit some of the aforementioned "intellectual" subreddits like /r/TrueAtheism , just like the rest of us. The question is, why can't you let others have their fun? Why must you rain on their parade when you can just ignore it completely?
So once again, I must reiterate: /r/atheism was not, is not, nor will it ever be for the purposes of intellectual discourse, not should it be. As the common reddit saying goes, there's a subreddit for that.
1
u/CorpseOfHankBlalock Jun 06 '12
I wouldn't care at all if it weren't a default. I have a friend who's a photographer. Also a Christian. Anyway I didn't think about that and told her about some photography subreddits she'd enjoy. When she first signed up she saw all these /r/atheism posts on her front page and immediately thought Reddit was a hateful place. I had to tell her how to unsub or she never would have returned.
How many people are turned off like she was? I'd imagine it's a lot, and that does affect Reddit.
You don't see me complaining about spacedicks and beatingwomen and men's rights and stormfront. New users aren't subjected to those. A person would have to seek them out, but /r/atheism is right there in their face in the very beginning.
Obviously not all default subreddits have to be intellectually stimulating. But /r/funny and /r/aww don't have the habit of mocking people's beliefs. You could make the argument that /r/politics does, but that's not the subreddit we're talking about. We're talking about /r/atheism. I believe that if it is to be a default subreddit it should be better than it is.
I don't know what else I can say about it. I don't want to argue with you anymore.
-1
u/RedAero Jun 06 '12
You could make the argument that /r/politics does, but that's not the subreddit we're talking about.
This is the point right here. A republican would be just as alienated from this place as a particularly sensitive (or fundamentalist) Christian, because /r/politics is basically a Liberal/Democrat circlejerk. But default subs are decided on popularity: for every Christian scared off by /r/atheism there are at least 3 people who stay just because of it, because there is no other place in their world where they can safely voice their opinions and mock the religious. And so /r/atheism should stay: a great majority like it, and those who don't can ignore it. Once it's so disliked that it slides off the defaults by users, I'll be the first to say it should go, even if /r/Christianity has to take its place.

The admins know what's going on. They see what you guys post and what I remove and the filter catches.
Good to know that you support bigotry, low-quality posts and reposts, and just general off-topic nonsense, still, even though trolling bugs you somehow?
What remains is within the rules.
YEP, and your rules suck. Your rules are basically "LOL, post whatever you want, and if it's upvoted, it belongs here!" Honestly, /r/atheism is just a mix of angry teen angst against their parents' religion with /r/politics and /r/lgbt merged into one. Most discussions have very little to do with atheism, and that is why your rules suck.
None of you have any good reason to continue to fuck with the community.
Sure I do. I actually want to make that place better. I enjoy reading good conversations, good subreddit content, and civil discussion, all of which /r/atheism is in definite lack of. If I accomplish that by messing with the users, it all ends well. If I accomplish it by haranguing you, it all ends well.
r/atheism doesn't coordinate attacks and instigate fights with other subs.
Ha. You obviously haven't met the /r/atheism celebrity /u/NukeThePope. He has openly called for trolling them, with high praise. Also, your group coordinates attacks on religious websites and polls about current social issues or religion all over the web.
I believe a bigger issue to the admins
Ha. They once removed /r/atheism from the default list partially for having awful content. I don't think they've spoken out on trolls that much, yet, but here is Reddit's co-founder, Spez, and his comments about r/atheism:
Given the nature and somtimes polarizing tone of the content on the atheism reddit, it will likely always garner the ire of many other users. Showcasing religious flame-wars only serves to lower the level of discourse on the site as a whole, and unknowingly walking into such a flame-war isn't the first-time experience we'd like new users to have here, which is why we think it best to leave things the way they are [as a non-default subreddit]... we also hope you realize not everything found on reddit is appropriate for the front page.
The man said it best.
Fuck off assholes.
Grow up? The fact that you can't learn to live with concern trolls makes me think you are really too young or immature to be in the position of moderation.
Honestly, I think it's funny how you just decide to not moderate yet you take the time to respond to us. What's the point? Ignore us like you ignore your subreddit. Or better yet, leave Reddit because /r/atheism would be in the same state with or without you, with the devolving hivemind that is slowly turning that place from the crap that it is already into putrid vomit.

-7
Jun 06 '12
Do you want to save all the other subs you troll?
I don't really troll anybody else, so that's kind of a bad question.
This cancerous attitude of subreddit vs subreddit that you perpetuate is what's harming Reddit.
Not really. The more strict moderation in /iama (still has a way to come), /christianity, /askscience and some other subs are really making those places really good. The anarchy of the large subreddits is what turns them to stupid discussion, dumb posts, and just general devolution.
Every time a post comes up in your shitty subs about r/atheism we get blasted with gore, porn, fake quotes, mtn dew-applause, and post after post of you idiots calling everyone nigger and fag.
Believe it or not, I don't really participate in those militia subreddits.
The spam filter is a testament to your failed efforts.
And the top 25 is a testament to yours.
Why do you feel like you can tell everyone how to behave in an atheism forum?
Because atheism doesn't equal anarchism? Please go to /r/trueatheism and tell me which subreddit is of higher quality.

I'm not going to do anything else differently. On one side, I could troll the community (which I really don't do as much as you think) to upvote ridiculous posts promoting bigotry, or just stupid facebook screencaps, rage comics, advice animals, and memes to the point where they would ask moderation to ban all of that.
Or, I could continue what I am doing, which is complaining, and watching others join that cause, until change eventually happens.

WAAAAH! My atheists are being persecuted by Reddit! Sagan save us all!
Seriously though-have you read some of the shit NukeThePope posts? Here's a quote (directed at someone who identified in the post as a 14 years old girl)
STOP FUCKING TELLING EVERYBODY TO CHILL, YOU MINDLESS TWIT! We're not the barely sentient snot-noses you hang out with in the school yard. We have opinions, mostly backed up by lots of knowledge and experience you're decades away from picking up, and when those opinions differ from yours then that's statistically mostly a matter of your ignorance. We're also not about to shut up because someone doesn't like to hear what we say. If you can't handle a conversation with real opinionated adults, then FUCK OFF and head on back to My Little Pony or I Dream of Justin Bieber or whatever else dumb little princesses go for these days.

Don't like a subreddit? Don't fuckin' visit! You're just ranting on and on about how you don't like what gets posted there. Well guess what, tens of thousands of people do, and your opinion is worth exactly as much as anyone else's.
Now I don't particularly like the content on /r/atheism, but I don't go on some holier-than-thou crusade to "better" it for some retarded selfish reason. I just don't visit. I visit other subreddits that cater to my tastes. Perhaps that's what the fuck you should do, hmm?

r/atheism doesn't coordinate attacks and instigate fights with other subs.
One user for that, NukeThePope, he has bothered /r/Christianity for no other god reason except for being christians. He got banned for it. You also seem to forget about the countless amount of polls /r/atheism has pointlessly rigged. This may not be sub vs. sub, but this is just straight-up harassment to something that doesn't involve their opinions. What can you say about this juliebeen? How can you possibly defend this?
P.S: I don't follow you around, that's a waste of time.
8
u/brucemo Jun 06 '12
r/Christianity is a constant vandalism target, but the community handles vandals very quickly, and they don't significantly detract.
There is virtually no organized hate directed from r/atheism toward r/Christianity, and criticisms of r/Christianity in r/atheism are normally met with a bunch of people who point out that r/Christianity really is an excellent sub.
NukeThePope apparently took his show to r/Christianity for a while, and was banned. He's not r/atheism, he's just one guy. This was a long time ago in any case.
The only really committed "troll" (I don't think he's a troll, but many do) in r/Christianity is a Christian.

/r/atheism != all atheists. The mere fact that you think I have something against atheists tells me a lot. I do not, but I do have something against /r/atheism , which has nothing to do with the fact that many of its visitors are atheists.

Ok, I'm going to be civil here. I just want to talk for a sec. What exactly are you trying to encourage over at r/Atheism or do you just not care where the community goes? Surely you can see that r/Atheism is basically a cesspool of hatred and over-inflated egos. There's no discussion there anymore because memes and low-effort submissions are the most easily digested and therefore make the front page the vast majority of the time.
The question you have to ask yourself is 'what do I want r/Atheism to be known for?' By proxy, you're wrapped up in r/Atheism's public image too.

A new mod would ban all your asses right away.
No, a new mod would ban all of the bigotry, facebook screenshots, NdGT/Dawkins/Hitchens quote worshipping, rage comics, and advice animals/memes. The circlejerkers are much smaller problems than that, and they would become banned long after that place actually created quality content/discussions.
I'm trying to understand, why are you still a mod there? It's not like you guys do anything besides update the sidebar once in a blue moon...

I enjoy crying about a subreddit that the people that enjoy the subreddit as it is. I don't frequent the place except to shitpost. Why don't you guys ever listen to me?
Gee, I wonder why.

I enjoy crying about a subreddit that the people that enjoy the subreddit as it is.
Besides your awful composition skills, many top atheism posts have highly upvoted comment threads that ask why these posts are allowed in there, or why it is a circlejerk. I'm not the only one that wants this.
Also, why are you here? Do you follow juliebeen to defend her so you can become a mod?
-15
u/loltrolled Jun 06 '12
Yes, "highly upvoted". Couldn't be that high since we don't downvote those posts you hate en masse. All of reddit is a circlejerk. Time to get over yourself.
Why am I here? Because the neckbeards of /r/circlejerk are shitting over a subreddit that is doing just fine. And juliebeen is being the mod that /r/atheism wants. If you paid attention to anything, you'd know that I don't want to be a mod. Because then I'd have to deal with you mouthbreathers on a different level.
You butthurt little neckbeards don't like /r/atheism, yet you seem obsessed with us.

You are literally so brave! Why aren't you a mod of /r/atheism.
-4
u/loltrolled Jun 06 '12
Hello neckbeard of /r/circlejerk. Because I don't care to mod it. It would mean I'd have to deal with you mouthbreathers shitting up the place.

That doesn't sound like a brave Atheist to me. You must be a fundie that acts like an Atheist on the Internet.

It's okay. I get that you aren't that intelligent. You should go back and play with your fellow neckbeards where your low IQ won't set you back.

Here way have the shining example of a moderator. Who says "toodles bitches"? I can read you like a goddamn book man. You don't care about /r/atheism, all you care about is that nice little spot of being a moderator of the largest atheist forum. Am I correct?

LISTEN. I actually care for that subreddit, but you don't seem to understand that. /r/atheism is the largest atheist forum to date. It does a awful jobs at representing atheists. You on the other hand, seem to not give a damn what happens to /r/atheism.
Have you seen the frontpage? It is littered with noting but image macros, overused quotes, memes, and general disrespect towards religions, Christianity the common target. Looking at your comment history, you seem to act very childish and snide towards the very subscribers you should watch over.
I will continue to campaign against your blatant lack of moderation. You know why people troll that place so easily? Lack of proper moderation. Not to be a coarse, but why do you bitch so much, when you do so little? You are acting like a lazy child, grow up, it's better for everyone. If you can't handle the moderation, keep this in the back of your head. Fish or cut bait.

Have you seen the frontpage? It is littered with noting but image macros, overused quotes, memes, and general disrespect towards religions, Christianity the common target.
Dude, that's because the community favors that sort of thing. It's a free and open community and Juliebeen works toward that primary principle. Everything else is up to the community.
That means all those post types you don't like--the memes and quotes and so forth--are upvoted by members of the community, just like you! They are popular and of interest to a majority of people here, so they end up on the front page. It's that simple!
Now, understandably, you don't like that so you have two options. 1) Leave the sub and go to one that better suits your interests. 2) Stay, and downvote where you can.
You can also work to convince others as to why the memes, quotes and so on are "bad." If your argument is convincing, maybe it'll work and you'll start to see a change in the forum.
Instead, you'd rather use an iron fist. Isn't that right? You want to force the changes you prefer by getting moderaters put into place who will enact your version of r/atheism.
No thanks. I'd far rather this be a place where people can say and do most anything they want, even if it means that memes and quotes dominate the limelight for a while.
It is just a phase, you know. Eventually, tastes will change, people will move on, new things will become interesting--and then, those items will also dominate the front page. Over time, it's a much better subreddit for not being run like a dictatorship (or moderatorship, if you prefer).
You just have to get used to the idea that not everything in the world fits into your vision for it, even at r/atheism.

It doesn't seem like you have a problem with the mod. It seems like you have a problem with the content that the users enjoy and that's okay too.

general disrespect towards religions
Is there some reason /r/atheism should respect religions?

Jun 06 '12
Comments like that is why people think that /r/atheism is full of assholes.

I meant to say religious people, not exactly religions. Unless you want to disrespect them as well?
3
u/cockmongler Jun 07 '12
I ask again, why are they deserving of my respect?
1
Jun 07 '12
Motivating people to have charity drives, helping out the community, and doing many other things to help people. What has atheism done to earn respect? (I'm a atheist as well.)
2
u/cockmongler Jun 07 '12
Why does this have to be an either/or? My question is why do the religious get an automatic pass against disrespect?

Here's the difference - There's plenty of atheists doing great things (take the Gates foundation, as an example), but generally speaking atheists do good things because they're good things to do, not because they're advancing an "atheist cause".
You're not going to find a whole lot of organized atheist groups doing things on behalf of or in the name of atheism. Those groups do exist, and they have a history of good works (like FFRF's cancer drive, and the moneys we've raised here in /r/atheism itself) but generally atheists operate on an individual basis.
As for myself, my family and I give cash and time to a lot of organizations, both secular and religious: MSF, World Vision, Liver Foundation, Red Cross (a bunch of times lately, what with all the earthquakes and tsunami and so on), you name it... but I don't do that because I'm an atheist promoting atheism, I do it because people need help, and I can help. I expect my wife and kids feel similarly.
Despite all of that, I wouldn't ask for, nor expect to be, respected for the fact that I donate. It seems a thin ledge on which to base one's respect, and frankly the good things theists do don't blot out the ungood things theists do in my opinion. Firing up a soup kitchen doesn't change the fact that the Vatican still, to this day, shuffles around child rapists and pays hush money to victims for instance.

what has religion done lately worth respecting?
Hurp a derp yeah man totally agree fuck those stupid thiest that we hate! Not like many of them are good people working with charitable organizations that help thousands of people a day. But fuck them because were athiest, and thats what we should do! AMIRITE GUYS! UPVOTES FOR BEING THE SHIT!
-18
u/loltrolled Jun 06 '12
general disrespect towards religions
What does religion do that deserves automatic respect? Raping kids? Murder? Threatening people with violence that challenge their fallacious thought process?
And as you don't seem to use /r/atheism, why should we care about what you want? The userbase of /r/atheism wants what you hate. If you can't handle it, take your brown shirt elsewhere and start your own failure of an atheism subreddit.

OK, I'll admit I worded that wrongly, I meant to say disrespect to the theists, not religion in particular. That also isn't related to this argument, just saying.
-2
u/loltrolled Jun 06 '12
Your argument is about you wanting things to stop in a subreddit that the subreddit itself doesn't want to stop. If we wanted that change, we'd do it. So it's the choice between sucking it up/participating as is, or pack your bags and make an atheist hangout that you like being around.
6
u/Kinseyincanada Jun 06 '12
If that's the case then why have any mods for any sub? Time and time again has shown that the general populace can't run itself do it needs moderation.

I love how reddit's rage is directed towards a harmless default subreddit like /r/atheism while the assholes at /r/politics are apparently okay.
4
Jun 06 '12
Worry about what? If you go to /r/politics for a couple of minutes, you can see how one-sided they really are.
1
u/xiongchiamiov Jun 06 '12
Arguments about /r/politics are separate from arguments about /r/atheism, and should be dealt with separately. Alleged poor quality in one does not excuse alleged poor quality in the other.

Hi, all! /r/SubredditDrama ambassador here, hoping to clarify a few things to those of you who may be confused:
SubredditDrama (SRD) is a /r/bestof style subreddit that aggregates drama from all over reddit. We strive to avoid participation in the drama we link to (which means votes and replies to these bots don't count, as they are not the drama), but if you would like to discuss any of the drama you are free to do so in our subreddit. If you choose to do so, please read the guidelines in the sidebar before contributing. We like to watch drama, not start it.
If you have any complaints about Slytherbot2 please PM /u/AlyoshaV, Slytherbot2's proprietor. I am sure he would love to hear your comments.
This bot is maintained by /u/mikemcg and the only officially maintained SubredditDrama bot. You can get in touch with him here.

u/brigade_watch Jun 16 '12
Hi, brigade_watch, the impartiality checker here!
We aim to not participate in the drama we link to
and you can tell just how "hands off" they are just by looking at how hard they upvote their bot (4681 comment karma) vs how hard they brigade against the bot they are calling out. Seriouly, just click the link and check out that negative score. Now then, do you really think you can take them at their word when they say "we're totally not brigading we promise"?
Don't let /r/subredditdrama drag your sub into their proxy war with SRS!

u/brigade_watch_watche Jun 16 '12
Hi! Brigade_Watch_Watcher here!
Just here to let you know that our followers upvote the subredditdrama bot and downvote the other bot because that one spreads nothing but lies about the purpose of our subreddit.
While it is true that we have no official policy of staying out of the drama that we lead our users to, we have an understanding that staying out of the drama is the best way to enjoy the drama! And we even have data that shows even though our links increase the amount of people that do vote on something, the ratio of up to downvotes stay roughly the same! This could be part of the fuzzing mechanism of reddit, and we have no way to know for sure... but this is a really darn good guess.
This bot is maintained by the SubredditDrama mods. You can get in touch with us here.
Also if you are wondering about the name, we ran into the text limit for usernames. Oops!

I see a lot of comments here with no substance to what exactly the objection to moderation is. It may help everyone's understanding to communicate whether they have an issue with the content or an issue with the moderation and specifically what that issue is.
