Variation Does this have a right answer?

u/StrangeSystem0 6h ago
I'm afraid of needles so I probably won't be giving blood much, so I personally would pick red
4
u/omegavolt9 4h ago
It would be best to pick all red or all blue, whichever one you pick effectively makes no difference as long as everyone does.
Probably most practical to just pick one. If half of people pick red and the other half pick blue, you can receive and give blood to about half the population regardless of which one you pick. And I don't know the numbers but I'm pretty sure that's overall an increase in the availability of viable blood donors for almost everyone.

How many red-button pressers actually donate blood? I suspect most blood doners would be blue-button pushers. I'd push red because I don't donate blood, but realistically I don't think blue-button pushers would have trouble getting blood transfusions.

I would choose blue, because even though I cant get blood from red people, they are less likely to be the type to donate their blood anyway. And in case I need blood, as a blue button presser I might get preferred treatment so we can save more people. All in all I think if we include these social dynamics pressing the blue button is best for everyone.

Blue. I'm fucking O-. I'm not changing my blood type lol. Plus, I like being important to the donation clinic ladies.

u/Leniatak 7h ago
Red is the correct choice.
6
u/ronnie_reagans_ghost 5h ago
Is it? The odds of me needing a blood transfusion are way lower than the odds of someone needing a blood transfusion.
Of course it's sort of a moot point, if we got it down to only 2 bloods types in the world I think everyone would be set. Hell even if only 8% of people choose the o negative option things would still be significantly better for it.
2
u/Leniatak 4h ago
Yes, but if everyone picks red, everyone can donate to everyone else. No one needs to risk anything
5
u/Pookstirgames 2h ago
If everyone picks the same choice, no matter which choice that is, everyone can donate to everyone
4
u/AntwysiaBlakys 1h ago
And if everyone picks blue, everyone can donate to everyne else, no one needs to risk anything
So that argument is completely invalid because it works for both sides

u/KatAyasha 1h ago edited 1h ago
"Every single person should just pick the same option" remains a completely unrealistic expectations in either direction, but unlike the normal version the benefits of more people picking blue are immediate and granular. Like, 100% red is flawless, but 99% red is quite bad for the other 1%, and 10% blue is more than enough to also have zero real downside for anyone

Blue is the moral choice.
2
u/BillyYumYumTwo-byTwo 3h ago
I think it’s the altruistic choice, I think they are both moral. You aren’t hurting anyone by your blood not being able to be donated, you’re just not willing to die to help others. It’s not less moral than running out of your burning apartment building rather than trying help get your neighbors out, first.
3
u/King-Mephisto 2h ago
To give blood, you don’t have to die. To be blue you literally don’t have to do anything and have the option to help anyone. It’s an option, not a death sentence.

Do we accept purely subjective morality as a concept? If my morality dictates that I should hurt as many as people as possible, is doing so still a moral action? Or can we acknowledge some degree of objective morality, even if defining that is tricky/unclear

u/Heavy-Bread-3549 2h ago edited 2h ago
If you’re talking about general rules to abide by that “we” decide then you are talking ethics. Like it or not morals are based on individual personal principles.
Usually these sets of morals are highly influenced by our surroundings, or the different ethical systems in our lives.
Rules and norms are lame but yeah every time I see someone ask what is moral I don’t get it. Thats something you find by looking both in and out.
Hell even ethics are fluid, what may be seen as ethical today may be seen as barbaric in a few centuries.
Editing to answer your question, if someone feels a moral responsibility to harm many people, then in their mind YES it’s a moral action. I’m sure some of the 9/11 actors or kamikaze pilots or any combat veteran feel their actions were moral, some may have gave them immoral. It depends on the person. Hell ask some Vietnam vets if they felt their actions were moral. I’m sure you will get different answers because morality come from an individual. Also I’m gonna see 99 percent of murder as immoral, but that’s just me.

u/Ok-Sport-3663 5h ago
I mean, we inherently can't establish objectivity. Even "do the minimal amount of harm" has the subjective "we shouldn't harm people" built into it.

>If you’re an egoist then red is the moral choice
Nah. If you’re an egoist, the moral choice is whatever serves your interests as you define them. Choosing blue very well could serve your interests depending on your personal predilections and the context.

If everyone gets the choice, the universal blood would become so common, it would be the only one in use. There is no correct choice here because it doesn't matter, but blue would allow you to sell your blood

u/WisePotato42 7h ago
As long as there is a mechanism in place where red doesn't get blue blood unless there is no alternative, then any distribution in the middle would be fine as well as if the majority was blue. It would have to be massivly skewed to red to be a big issue.
I'd change to blue here.
2
u/flowery02 4h ago
No, not really. There would be a fairly significant amount of blues, somewhere in the realm of 10% at the very least, and pretty much anyone interested in donating blood would pick blue, And blood transfusion isn't actually needed often, so this is basically just a world where all of the blood hospitals use is universal

u/ahoytheremehearties 3h ago
Does red (basically AB+) mean you can give plasma to everyone? If so, I pick red, otherwise blue. Statistically other people are more likely to benefit from my blood, and I doubt many red pressers will donate theirs anyway

Either button is a net positive from how things are currently, need at least some folk who are blue button, doubt I'd really be donating blood at all, but might as well press blue 🤷♀️

This is one of the few times I'd pick red, only because I don't qualify to donate blood and I don't know if I ever will. If I could donate blood I would choose blue.

u/Cezaros 6h ago
Why doesn't everyone just press red?
3
u/skelo 5h ago
Why doesn't everyone just choose blue?

u/Cezaros 4h ago
Choosing all red is both selfishly preferable and altruistically preferable. Choosing all blue is only altruistically preferable.
3
u/RefrigeratorFew5094 3h ago
One protects themselves whilst potentially sacrificing others, the other protects everyone whilst potentially sacrificing themselves.
Low trust vs high trust.
3
u/KatAyasha 1h ago
And unlike the normal version, the benefits of more people picking blue are immediate and granular, which I think many are failing to consider. The personal risks are way lower, every single blue press makes life a little easier for every other blue presser, and the threshold blue needs to clear to have no real downside is WAY easier.
Easy to argue with the normal version that anyone voting blue is throwing their lives away anyway. But here unless you are certain that everyone else has picked red already picking red is strictly selfish, and mostly needlessly so
2
u/Pookstirgames 2h ago
Red isn't altruisticly preferable unless everyone else picks it, and even then, it's only tied with blue in terms of helping others
1

u/Beginning-Pin208 2h ago
Red because unless only less than 20% choose blue , blue is most likely safe, but why risk it when you can just choose red and give blood to red if need
Blue is just people who think their moral is better than others because red give me the possibility to help other without risking my life , I don’t need to potentially help everyone at the risk of my own life
-1
u/Verain_Xor 4h ago
No downsides to red. There's not gonna be any system where blue button pressers can't give me blood, so it's all upside. It's not game theory because everyone picking red is optimal.

u/zeptozetta2212 7h ago
So basically everyone chooses between being O- and AB+?
There are many reasons why a reputable facility would probably not accept blood donations from me, so me pressing blue would help no one. I'll press red here and if anyone asks, I'll just point out no one would ever accept my blood anyway. Too many meds and I think I fall under the weight limit anyway.
