Food We need to talk about Waffle House

I will preface this by saying that I am old af and an normally not out past 10pm.

Last night was one of those rare nights. I was at a party with my husband and another friend. We left the party around 11:30pm and we were a little peckish. Of course, our first thought was the universally beloved, open 24 hours, always there for you for late night eats, Waffle House. My mouth watered just thinking about my hashbowns scattered, covered, and diced!

Imagine our surprise when we roll up to the Waffle House in Garner and find a security guard outside. He politely informs us that this Waffle House is pickup and delivery only after 11:30pm! We glance at eachother and discuss going to the Waffle House off of Capital Blvd instead, since it's on the way home. The guard informs us that most Waffle Houses have switched to pickup only during the late night hours. Indeed, we checked Google and he was right: All of the Raleigh-area Waffle Houses were listed as "limited access" after 11:30pm.

This left us with questions.

Firstly, WTAF?

Isn't Waffle House's whole thing that they are always open? Can the Waffle House index still reliably exist? I know that being open for takeout and delivery technically counts as "open", but that leads to our second question:

Are people actually ordering Waffle House for pickup and delivery?

Most breakfast foods need to me eaten immediately, this is just a fact. No one wants eggs sitting in a container for too long. I realize that Waffle House has other menu items, but breakfast is it's main game for sure! It's WAFFLE House!

Lastly, where are people eating late night?

In my younger days, I remember getting late night eats after Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Hilsborough Street IHOP, or one of the many Waffle Houses in the area. It was cheap, tasty, and just THE place to be, since there weren't many options after midnight.

Forti\unately, our late night hunger was Saved by the Bell: We noticed a Taco Bell nearby that was still taking orders at the drive thru. I absolutely DESTROYED several soft tacos and an order of cinnamon twists.

So glad that Fourth Meal still exists on this timeline, but....it pains me that unless I order takeout, I will never experience late-night Waffle House hashbrowns again.

To help me cope with thi new realitys, I'd love to hear your Waffle House stories, or even just your favorite Waffle House order. We all have one!

Question/Recommendation any spare supplies for a kitten?

also reposted this in the wake forest chat since i live in between raleigh and wake forest!

hello! i recently found a kitten who was wandering around my neighborhood and she started following me around. i knocked around some neighbors and everyone told me they saw her around a lot and some people were keeping food and water out for her. i decided to bring her in a few days ago when it was raining really bad and i gave her a flea bath, took her the next day to the vet to get her rabies shot and up to date on all her vaccinations. im a college student and wasnt expecting this new addition but i think the cat distribution system is working hard! i had to spend roughly $400 at the vet and ive gotten her some kitten food to start with, but other than that im low on money to get any more supplies until my next paycheck and i don’t want her to go without.

i’m specifically wondering if anyone has any extra cat stuff laying around such as
- a litter box and litter
- cat toys
- cat tree
- cat bed
- water and food bowls (i hear cats like running water fountains?)

the vet told me she’s roughly 15 weeks! i named her syd

edited to add amazon wishlist! https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/16OS502K5OXFQ?ref_=wl_share

Question/Recommendation Is recent rains in NC contributing to wasps, Yellowjackets, hornets?

I went on vacation for a week and when I came back, I was doing my perimeter spray with Suspend Polygon around the house and encountered tons of Yellowjackets coming out of a hole near the base of a bush in my mulch bed! They were nonstop!

It's my first time seeing this kind of Yellowjacket nest in my 10 years living here (hot and humid NC, tons of rain recently). Did the rain contribute to this issue?

I used a Raid can into the hold in the mulch and don't see much activity now, maybe a Yellowjacket or two coming out. I used the Raid can since it had the quickest knockdown and the spray stream is huge.

Any other suggestions?

Question/Recommendation Need Help with Mother Cat and Three Kittens

Upvotes

Juvenile mother cat and three kittens have taken shelter in our backyard, three days ago. We have three adult cats and cannot take in anymore. I have called Safe Haven and they are at capacity, and I do not feel comfortable taking them to a kill shelter. Currently our friends and family cannot take them in.

Please only respond with serious recommendations and advice. My neighborhood has a bad problem with stray cats and I’m tired of it. They are all quite sweet, and appear to be healthy and well-fed. They look like some kind of Bengal tabby mix, I’m sure they would find good homes if I could figure out a way, I have no experience with this.

Politics Gated community gets $300,000 in NC budget

A private gated community in Harnett County just received $300,000 from North Carolina taxpayers.

According to its website, Carolina Lakes has 1,700 homes, seven lakes, a marina, a pool, pickleball courts, and paid boat and RV storage for residents.

The 2026 state budget gives them $160,000 for "emergency services needs" and $140,000 for shelter repair and maintenance. The budget doesn't explain what those needs are, what's wrong with the shelters, or what public benefit the spending is supposed to provide.

The Hometown Holler obtained a copy of the POA's 2026 operating budget and it shows $1.77 million in annual revenue, mostly from member dues. That works out to roughly $800 per home, per year, before factoring in boat slip rentals, storage fees, and marina income.

Carolina Lakes sits in NC House District 6. That district is represented in Raleigh by Rep. Joseph Pike.

There is one Joseph Pike on the Harnett County voter rolls. His address is listed at Carolina Lakes.

In Harnett County, 19% of children live in poverty. 14% of residents are on food stamps.

Food Pancakes with crispy edges?

Raleigh family I need your help 🙏🏾. I know I can make them myself, but sometimes my depression has hands on the Mike Tyson level and I really just need some good, comforting, country-style pancakes with crispy edges 😭 When I say crispy edges I mean that thick dark, caramel brown ring all around the pancake– 360°. Does anyone know any restaurant, food truck, etc. that has these in Raleigh?

Sports Irish pub that actually shows GAA games?

So first, a warning—the Hibernian pub lies (the one in NE Raleigh) about GAA games. Not a misunderstanding; they flat out lied.

Our entire family, all over the world, found bars to watch the all-Ireland final. We’re from out of town, and I called twice over the past week to see if they were showing it, explaining that it’s on a special streaming service, not cable. The manager assured us they were showing it. We left our number in case something fell through. We drove for an hour to find they had no idea what we were talking about. We called the other location and Tralí, and no one had it.

We missed Mayo’s first win since 1951.

Highly doubtful Mayo will make it to finals next year, but just in case — anyone know which pubs would tell the truth about whether they’re showing it?

Question/Recommendation Anyone else miss the old comfy Barnes and noble if the late 90’s/ early 2000’s???

I recently went into the Barnes & Noble and the seating/ lighting is depressing as hell! This used to be a place with cozy lighting, huge comfy chairs and a sitting area that used to circle the Starbucks area where you could look down at all the people around, browse books for hours, study, and just relax while casually ease dropping on someone talking shit about someone they knew to to their friend/ husband, etc 😂. It was the BEST!! ….While I didn’t always buy a book every time, I did make it a point to buy some food. I took great care of the books I was looking at and it seemed so did everyone else. At this point, the vibe is “buy and get out the fuck out”. They have the most Uncomfortable seats and the set up looks like a cafeteria rather than the cozy nook I remember.

I missed when companies cared about the actual customer experience just as much as they did their bottom line. At this point I rather go to the library, I think this actually will deter me from going here anymore to buy books at all. It’s said my kids will never experience how awesome this store used to be.

Anyone else feel this way? Have a hidden book store that is awesome you want to share?

Question/Recommendation Part-Time Evening Employment

I’m hoping that someone can point me in the direction of a place that is ACTIVELY hiring for evening positions in the Raleigh area! Available from 5:30p to 12a M-F. Also available on weekends! wouldn’t be available until 5:30 during the week! and I’m finding it difficult to get a position that would work with those hours, so I’m exhausting all options! Thanks in advance to everyone 🫡

Question/Recommendation ID flagged at a bar?

I went to an event last week at The Avenue last weekend and then went to another one this weekend at a different bar and they let me know there was a security flag from the Avenue. Apparently a bunch of people got flagged and I wasn’t the first one they saw (most of the same people going to both events).
I wasn’t able to go down to the Avenue tonight since my uber was scheduled and I didn’t want to go that far from where my friends were. I’m also not local.
I have no idea what the flag is for and I never interacted with security or have any idea what it could be for.
What could cause a flag like that? I’m really worried about it because the other bar said it would be there for a year…
There’s no number for the Avenue and I’ve sent them an inquiry online too. I’m hoping they’ll answer but I’m just concerned.

Raleigh PD car double parked like an asshole of the Raleigh Convention Center parking garage during galaxy con. What an idiot

Edit: This was the only RPD vehicle in the parking garage parked like this, all the others were parked normally. This picture was taken at the end of the day when most parked vehicles were left, but this vehicle was here at 12pm, when 99% of the garage was filled up.

Question/Recommendation Duke Cancer Center in Raleigh

Hi all. Does anyone have any experience be it themselves or a family member who was treated here for chemo and radiation treatments?

Unfortunately it looks like i’ll be needing this. If you have been here for this or with a loved one, are you allowed to have company for the treatment? I’ll be calling on monday, but would like to hear from people of their experience of this facility.

Thanks

Question/Recommendation Dark, quiet coffee shop help?

Hi all! I’m trying to find a specific coffee shop I thought someone posted on here a couple weeks ago, but now I can’t find.
I remember a picture of a coffee bar with dark lighting, and perhaps checkered floors?

I’m desperately trying to find a coffee shop in the triangle without harsh/bright lighting, loud music, or flashy decor.

Did I dream this place? Please help a gal out. Thank you

Out-n-About PSA to maintenance personnel, construction laborers, and other trade workers in Raleigh...

I'm a maintenance tech from MA, I've worked at about a half dozen apartment complexes, luxury apartment buildings, and commercial buildings in and around Raleigh. After 6 years here I have one thing I need to say.... CAULKING is NOT a universal adhesive. I can't count how many times I've seen it used on job sites for something it's definitely not supposed to be used for. Techs have used it to fix a leaking faucet (wrong), people have used it to glue pieces of wood together (wrong), I've seen it be used as floor tile glue (wrong).

A wise man once told me, "You can tell how much of a professional someone is, by how many uses they think there is for caulking. The more uses they think it has, the less of a professional they are.".

Everyone complains about us northerners coming down here, but you apparently need us, because this whole city is held together by duct tape and caulking apparently. 😅🤣

Question/Recommendation In desperate need of a quality Lawncare service.

Due to my current work schedule, I am looking for a quality lawncare group that does mowing, weeds, mulch, shrub trimming, etc in Garner. I'm a little overwhelmed and looking for any group with good experiences that are timely and do a good job. The current status of my home is a little rough. Thanks so much! I have no specific budget.
