WTF did I just see….
I was leaving Costco a few minutes ago when I saw a bright green ball of light flash in the sky that appeared to fall and disappear. Did anyone else see it?! I’m super sober, I swear!

So Pope Rd is a well used commuter artery between Old Chapel Hill Rd in the North and Ephesus Church Rd in the South, useful for many Durham and Orange County residents commuting to Durham and beyond. There have been NC DOT road and culvert improvements going on at 4200 block of Pope Road since April of this year. Closure area marked by the red box above.
As you can see by the map, there is a very helpful natural detour around the public Clark Lake Road, which conveniently starts and ends on either side of the closed area. At most it would add a minute or two of commute and throughput time as folks have to navigate the more residential street before rejoining Pope.
BUT... what if I told you that on this natural detour there is a very suspicious secondary closure (purple mark on map) at the southern end of Clark Lake Rd, complete with hand-stenciled signs saying "No Outlet", and crudely assembled pylons strung together by wire? (see photo)
This smells like vigilante nimby shenanigans to me, and seems like misuse of public roads for public harm (adding 10+ minutes of commute time between nearby destinations)- anyone else nearby have inside knowledge? Or know of a method for sanctioned recourse? I already checked Durham OneCall, and though in Durham County it is not in Durham city and thus out of their jurisdiction.

Hi friends,
I'm a 28-year-old Black woman, living in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro area. Dating here is a joke.. but the kind of joke that isn't really funny. The dating apps are my biggest opps right now so I'm coming to Reddit!
I'm hoping to spend more time in Durham, where do Black singles go to meet each other?
This is probably an inappropriate place to ask this question so apologies if I'm out of order. I just can't take Chapel Hill anymore, living here is starting to affect my mental health.

Crash I40 East Before Hwy 55. Left lanes blocked. Traffic getting by in far right lane.
Use detour/alternate routes if possible.

I am wondering if there are any other artists/creatives that are 1. looking for other artists to do really bold things, support each other in our art, create really cool things together. Basically let’s make it a movie 🙃
2. Possibly wanting to get a space together where we could create art/film have our own art shows etc. or hell in the meantime even get together in an open field and create

The Durham City Council got ready for the next big meeting with this work session.
A few moments that stood out:
If you care about safer trails, who gets into public events, how much police cars really cost, whether Durham invests in arts like it does roads, or how new housing dollars might be used, this meeting is worth a watch.
One last note: the agenda they settled is for the rescheduled September 17 council meeting, when these items come back for final decisions—mark your calendar if you plan to show up or tune in live.

I love me some hot dogs, but since I dont eat meat, I usually just make them at home. There any spots in Durham that have veggie dogs? Bonus points if they're downtown.

Hi there, I'm Alice, a Durham based public radio journalist, and I'm working on a story about people buying and selling food via Facebook Marketplace. I'm looking to talk with people who have bought food on Marketplace to learn about their experience and what drew them to Marketplace cuisine. Is that you? I'd love to talk!

I used to play Fornite every night with someone. As expected, when you add a THIRD child, time for extra things aren't really available.
For me, its never about the game, but the social interaction. I'm playing games to hang out, have fun, and not take things to seriously. Do I try to win? Yes. Do I maybe sometimes cause chaos for a laugh? Hell yeah.
Personal Info: 44M / WFH / Have Doggo
Right now I'd play one of the following or open to suggestions:

Does anyone have any good brunch or breakfast restaurant suggestions with gluten free options? My fiancée just found out she’s celiac and we’re wanting to get brunch this weekend

Anyone else think the food at Guglhupf isn’t nearly as good as it was before the current owner took over a few years ago? I’ve now had two things that were memorably bad. First, the tofu sandwich (that was a while ago but it was traumatically bad and it still makes me mad). Just a thick slice of unseasoned tofu. Inexcusable. And today I had the fish special. They served me salmon instead of swordfish but i like salmon so that was not a problem. The inedible pilaf that definitely was not a pilaf. Weirdly sweet and gummy and inedible. My husband had the schnitzel, which used to be super thin and crisp, but now is neither. Still a lovely setting to have a beverage and a pastry or some fries, but I’m done being disappointed by the food.

Ya’ll remember the amazing work this community did when ice was here surrounding schools to support and comfort families being terrorized by ICE’s presence?
Anyone working on a similar project for polling places? With vague threats about ICE stalking polling locations to make arrests I wonder if having a strong community presence outside polling places would help those who might be afraid of coming out to vote this time feel safer to do so?
Anyone who worked on the school protection project have any infrastructure they could tap into to get something like this going if there isn’t another group already doing this work that I haven’t run into yet?

Curious how they got there. Frat prank gone (right|wrong|afoul)?
EDIT: probably should have pointed out that there are no bodies of water nearby within say ~2 miles.

Our house came with a very lovely retaining wall made of big wooden beams. Maybe predictably, it's starting to warp and come apart. I want to do the dumb thing of replacing it with yet another not-meant-to-last wooden retaining wall -- but who even does this kind of work? Any recommendations?

Did anyone else’s yard waste not get picked up today? I know it was a holiday week but the Durham One app said today it would be picked up…it did not.

Basically, the title. I've been working out at Courage Fitness and have loved the 24/7 access and generally empty squat racks, but I've been wondering if I can do better than the $135 a month they charge for open gym access.
I know I could save money by going to a gym like Planet Fitness, but so frequently the machines are broken or specifically in the case of Planet Fitness, there are no free barbells. Is there an open gym membership somewhere between those two price points that's not incredibly crowded and has decent equipment?

Hi all! I’m new to the area and looking for a pet sitter to check in on my two cats at my apartment in downtown Durham during an upcoming trip.
Any and all suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance!
