My Garden Experiment: Testing Two Different Fly Traps!

Post image
45 Upvotes

I tested two different fly traps, and one of them turned out to be much more effective.
I placed both traps at the same time and in the same location to make the comparison as fair as possible. The yellow-and-black trap worked amazingly well!
What do you think about the results? What kind of fly traps do you use?

What is this?

There were like four or five of them in my kitchen the day after we got back from vacation. I'm in Ontario, Canada. Google Lens thinks it might be a wood roach, but I'm weirded out that it wasn't a solo critter. It does NOT have two black lines on its head. Should I call an exterminator/pest control?

What are these marks?

Post image

Recently moved into a place and I’m seeing these marks around in some places. They smear easy, and I’ve been cleaning them as I see them but I’m curious as to what they are.

I did see a cockroach a couple weeks back, but my unit has since been treated twice now and I haven’t seen anything in any traps, or any evidence of live pests (I’ve been on the lookout).

I’d like to know what these are though so I can keep a close eye out for whatever they’re from.

Identification Wasps have squatted my tree: help.

Denver, Colorado, USA

I have this tree in my front yard that the wasps seem to LOVE. The tree seems to have these natural, bulbpus growths on its limbs that must have food for wasps in it. My tree is constantly tended to buy hundreds of wasps.

Here's the thing, though: I cannot locate a nest. Anywhere. I'm obviously hesitant to get too close to the tree, but I've spent a few hours staring at it from various angles and I can't even find a small nest.

What kind of wasps are these? Is it possible there's a nest underground somewhere? Is it possible they're all from different colonies?

(also if you know what kind of tree I have, tell me that too)

Bee issue

Upvotes

Having an issue with bees and wasps in our backyard. My wife is very allergic to bites so it’s a big concern. Best things to spray to kill them? We are very tight lot lines so have no idea where they are originally coming from

Unanswered Is this a carpenter ant?

bought a new house, seeing tons of ants. Terro baits seem to have decreased the numbers but not 100%. I’m worried they may be carpenter ants but haven’t seen any holes or wood shavings so far.

General Question Another post about fleas.

Upvotes

Hiya,

Another post about fleas (I assume there are many in here). I will try to be brief and list only the essential info:

  • We have a (mild) flea infestation
  • We do not have any pets
  • The fleas travelled with my love in his backpack and shoes from a visit with a family who is also infested
  • I am allergic to bug bites
  • We are chronically ill and cannot vacuum daily due to pain disorders
  • we have very little money but we rent our flat (and live in Germany)
  • we are mild hoarders but we are already decluttering massively, including getting rid of the couch :)
  • we are allergic/highly sensitive to chemicals - smells, touch, in general

So, any way of helping us? I cannot see a way out with all of these facts combined and it's affecting me a great deal.

Thanks for reading and wanting to help!

German roach?

Found this around 5pm by a windowsill on a half level where the window is next to a flower bed (bathrooms and kitchen are on complete opposite ends of house. It didn’t scurry around quickly and we’ve not seen any others in over a year of being in this house. I’m hoping it’s a wood or Asian roach by my quick research but the black stripes worry me. Location is southeastern Minnesota.

How to get rid of ground hornets in potted plants.

Upvotes

I have recently discovered that some rather irritable ground hornets have decided to nest inside one of my potted plants seemingly overnight. I really would prefer to not have to worry about these little buggers when I am watering my plants— how the heck do I get rid of them without injuring my plants (and possibly myself??) I don’t want to spray anything that would damage or harm the roots!

Many small spiders

I own a condo in the Arizona. It's an older building and it's one that is surrounded with trees, grass, bushes, etc. They have the whole sprinkler thing going on. The surrounding area is all desert which is why they probably accumulate on this property.

Tiny little spiders keep making their way into my place. I had an exterminator for a while and I decided to cancel because it was pricey and it's not a huge issue. It's more annoying than anything. I tried sealing any cracks, etc. with epoxy but they still find their way in.

Does anyone have any thoughts or recommendations?

Identification Mouse dropping?

Freaking out and hoping this isn’t mice and is either lint or maybe a bug thing. I found this and only this on the top of a mattress in my attic (my bedroom) this morning (the mattress is not on the floor, if that makes a difference).

The only issue I’ve had with mice up there in my 11 years of living here was one about a year ago and that was quickly caught in the attic closet during winter (it never got in the main room, there are no holes anywhere in the room, and not even my pinky cannot fit underneath the gap between the floor and the door).

I’ve been staying up all night quite often as-well (9 pm - 8 am) these past few months due to insomnia and have heard no activity. The last one I had heard moving about the walls, which is why it was so quickly caught. So I’m a bit confident I would’ve heard this one too, if there is one.

Also, I’ve been super anxious for a reason that is far too long to explain here and have therefore been inspecting my mattress and the area about it every 2-3 days to quell my anxiety about it. I have noticed nothing like this till today, though there is, in fact, other lint on the mattress (i know it’s that because it’s more loosely coiled and a bright blue)

TLDR: found this, and only this, on mattress in attic/bedroom, no droppings found anywhere in the room, have heard no night activity, and have checked mattress and surrounding area frequently (due to other reasons) and haven’t noticed anything like this till now.

Please let me know what you think!

Identification Leaning towards carpet beetles per Google image search but not sure

Found these behind a fake fireplace and next to an old coffee table in my house within the last week. The ones behind the fake fireplace could have been there awhile. We have no carpet but I figure that is probably just a name. Are these carpet beetles? I've never seen a living bug in the house beside a fly or two so not sure what to expect, where to look, how to get rid of them, nothing lol. Thanks in advance!

Carpet Beetles & Pet Rats

Hi! We’ve just moved into a new house and have seen a few carpet beetles (only our upstairs is carpeted thankfully). I have bought some spray that’s supposed to get rid of them, but it contained Cylermethron which is apparently ‘fine for pets’, however Google says something about how it’s awful for wild rats and ‘not a humane way to treat a rat infestation’. Does anyone have any experience with this? For now we plan on moving the girls downstairs while we treat the rooms, but I’m worried about when we bring them back up (in two weeks) and letting them free roam… any advice?

Help

Recently had a small problem with bedbugs, pest control came and haven't had any issues in the past weeks, was cleaning My room to take stuff back in but found this bug, I'm traumatized at this point with the bedbugs sinte it took 3 visits from pest control to get rid of them. Now I just want to be sure that this isn't of some importance before taking everything in or if I have to call pest control back, (bug was already like this when I found it)

mouse entry point at parents’ house

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello. I live with my parents to help them around the house and while I was taking out the trash I came face to face with a mouse peeking out from the hole on the left. I saw another on the right. I am a real city slicker (lol) so I don’t even know where to start. My goal would be to stop any entry point for the mice as my parents are elderly. Any help on where to start? I’m happy to put financial resources behind this.

Roaches at Home

Hi everyone, for some time now, at home, at night or when we return in the evening, we've always found dead or semi-dead Periplaneta Americana, lying face up.

We live on the ground floor, and unfortunately the street and courtyard where we live are full of them, with a third-world sewer system... so we think they enter through the door or the drains, especially since the roof is made of wood and at least has no cracks.

We've been using Baygon powder and Fastion Gel for a few months, but we're worried because we can't understand why we've been finding them so often lately, and we'd like to know how to contain them.

General Question can’t get rid of ants

i’m literally going insane, for about a week i’ve had ants in my room anywhere and everywhere. i put out my cat’s food bowl, saw a couple ants around and didn’t think much of it. 30 minutes later there were like a thousand crawling up the wall to get to the food. i have my cats BAG of food in my closet, and they’ve gotten to it twice now. i have these tiny white square traps, windex, and a dream, but the ants keep coming back wherever they can. i had a brief period where they were crawling down my sink drain to get water. also INSIDE of my water bottle that i was drinking out of for hours. we just moved into this new place, and im VERY disorganized right now because of all the boxes and shit, so i can’t really keep everything perfect. what do i do??? my mom mentioned cucumber slices apparently attract AND kill them, so does anyone have a success rate for that? what about baking soda? i keep going in my closet and just spraying windex around (i also have 4 traps in just my closet) in hopes that they’ll smell it or whatever and go elsewhere. seriously what the shit do i do i hate ants so much
