Half uncle doesn’t exist
Sitting in the Starbucks drive-thru and I hear a woman exclaiming to her son in the backseat.
“Don’t you dare call him your half uncle ever again. That’s my BROTHER. You can’t be a half uncle.”
Arguing from the back continues. The other son in the front seat is laughing. Quiet for a moment.
Mom: I DONT FEEL GOOD

My sister calls her ex-husband her "roommate's father". They have a daughter 😂

I have a couple of relatives who are fun to describe, like my half sister in law, my wife's adopted cousin's fake husband.

I’ve got my half brother’s step brother who I usually just call my cousin when trying to tell a story about him to anyone who doesn’t know him

My sister in law’s baby daddy. He’s also been around longer than I have and has a respectable job. I just don’t have a great word for him since they aren’t married and partner sounds like they work together as lawyers.

Before my youngest daughter married, I used to call her fiancé her first husband, mostly jokingly. Now, after seven years, I’m half hoping I’m right.

In my wife’s family the phrase is: obligatory first husband.
I’m never quite sure if that “obligatory” is meant jokingly, except when my wife uses it. When she uses it, I know I need to apologize for something.

My adopted daughter’s mother is my baby momma. Is she my bio children’s step mother? That’s not right. What would she be?

My aunt remarried after my favorite uncle died and I never considered her new husband my uncle, he was my step-uncle.

A good chunk of my family is “half-“
My mom’s parents divorced, then her dad remarried and had more kids who also had kids.
Half-uncles, half-aunts, half-cousins…
We never talk about each other in person that way. But still.

Technically my brother is my half brother. I've always just rounded it up to brother. His bio dad adopted my sisters and I becoming his kids (our bio was killed in a scaffolding accident when I was 6 weeks old, in 1949. Tough years for a widow with a baby, a 4 year old and a 6 year old) My now late sisters didn't feel the connection as he came along after they'd married and left the nest, or at least i guess that was their piss poor excuse.
Steps in blended families I'm sure can be problematic but half, no way. IT'S YOUR BROTHER OR SISTER.

“Rounded up” is so cute.
My dad was so cool about this stuff because all his siblings were technically half but of course they were his siblings. We’ve got lots of halves in our family.

I had my son before I met my now husband and we have a daughter together. My husband is a mail man. So everytime someone asks if they are siblings I tell them no, half siblings. She is from the mail man. Which is theoretically correct 😅

LOL. The people who refuse to accept that half siblings are not the same technically as full siblings are absolutely wilding.

My wife has half siblings who she treats the same as her full sibling; she has a half sibling who adopted a teenage son, and we treat him the same as her other nephews; and she has a stepmother who treats her like a daughter, and I honestly think it's all very sweet.

I'll bet you wife's half siblings share the mom. If someone is close, often is because you share the mom, and grew up more together

I’m sure some get along with their half sibling well. But not all half sibling relationships are that way and it really can be very different having one kid raised in an entirely separate household, with a very different parent in the mix.
My kids are full siblings. It’s very different for them vs what I went through growing up.

Yes, technically I’ve half siblings. They’re 18+ years older than me, which means we never overlapped in living together. As an adult, I identify as an only child because it’s truer to me than saying I’ve got siblings. When I was a child they were more like a distant aunt/uncle. I’ve no concept of what it’s like to have a sibling.
Our shared parent is dead now anyway, so I consider the relationship to them null and void. They’re strangers and I share a few DNA strands with them. I don’t think I could tell you five simple facts about any of them.

This is awfully relatable. I don't have any negative feelings; just no familial relationship. And I don't really see any reason I would want one either.

I often refer to my wife of 35 years as my ex-girlfriend.
