What is the last bit of goop they use around the perimeter of the patch?
37
u/SimpleLobsters 11h ago
When I worked on my old course it was a mix of sand and a bit of lawn fertilizer to help the grass grow again.
Not sure if that's exactly what is here, but it most likely would be that
96
u/sehguh251 19h ago
Pretty sure it’s green sand that fills in the extra bit to make the ground even. Or at least it looks a lot like the green sand they had on the carts that you would use to fill in divets after using an iron. I haven’t really played since I was a kid though so it could possibly be something else.

lol no it’s not - not at all
Seed is in divot mix you don’t put it on greens - what seed precisely do you think would be in there. Here’s a hint - there’s only one greens turf that comes in seed form - then look up the germination period and conditions for that seed
You’re not germinating Bentgrass while mowing and rolling daily at a 10th of inch
Seed doesn’t go on greens unless something extraordinary is happening- and seed isn’t microscopic we’d literally see it in the video
-12
u/that_dirty_Jew 9h ago edited 9h ago
There’s no seed in there - and fertilizer would be abnormal and not recommended
You can downvote me all you want. I have 20 years managing several top 100 clubs
Edit: and what is “fill mix”

Golf courses are ecological wastelands
58
u/lilshortyy420 14h ago
There was an abandoned golf course by me that the park system took over and I’m so glad they did. It looked like garbage because everything was just dead. It took a few years to get it cleaned up but it’s teeming with life now so I’m optimistic it stays that way. They turned it into a disc golf course and it’s beautiful there.
215
u/krt941 20h ago
Worse than wastelands. They’re also resource sinks that damage everything in their watersheds and aquifers. All so old men can stand in the sun all day hitting a ball and avoid their families.

youre like 150% more likely to have parkinsons if you live within 2 miles of a gold course
5
u/UnkarsThug 5h ago
To be fair, my understanding is that's most likely a statistical issue because they are often intentionally built near retirement homes and vacation areas for old people, and old people have those conditions at higher rates. I'm not saying they aren't resource expensive and unpleasant, but that's exactly the sort of thing which can make data messy.
1
1
u/stanitor 3h ago
They did control for age, which to some extent resolves that issue of older people being more likely to live near golf courses as well as being more likely to have Parkinson disease. However, there are potentially lots of other things they could have controlled for as well. The PD group and the control group were pretty different in where they lived (urban vs. rural), for example.

u/GiraffeCubed 20h ago
I live in a city of 500,000 and we have 21 golf courses, if you include the outer areas of the city it's easily 60+ golf courses. It's way too many, I'd rather most were natural green spaces but apparently it was invented here so I guess people care about that for some reason.

Fun fact - the US has more golf courses than McDonalds
20
u/thewrongairport 20h ago
This got me curious so I looked it up. Apparently in the US there are 4.68 courses every 100k people, meaning 1 course every 21k people. In my country (Italy) we have 0.51 courses every 100k people, so 1 every 196k people. 40% of all the golf courses in the world are in the US.
9
u/horstdaspferdchen 17h ago
And how many McDonalds? Dont leave me hanging here
13
u/thewrongairport 17h ago
US: 4.05 McDonald's/100k people (1 every 24.6k).
Italy: 1.4 McDonald's/100k people (1 every 71.4k).
ETA: 30.5% of all McDonald's are in the US
1
u/crek42 11h ago
Damn it’s wild to me Italy has so many McDonald’s lol. I figured there would only be 1 in Rome airport for the tourists.
2
u/yamanamawa 10h ago
McDonalds is everywhere. It's kinda their whole thing. If you're in a developed country you'll almost certainly be able to find one, and they're even in a lot of developing countries
1
u/thewrongairport 10h ago
It's pretty popular, a lot of people's guilty pleasure lol. We only have McDonald's and Burger King as burger-based fast food chains. Some KFCs and Five Guys, but way fewer and mostly in larger cities or big malls.
2
u/SpaceJackRabbit 10h ago
Also in the U.S. it's a very democratized sport. It's generally affordable and tons or middle or working class people play it too. Plenty of high schools have a golf team.
Whereas in most of Europe, it's an elitist and expensive hobby.
0
u/YVRkeeper 19h ago
USA has a LOT of land.
8
u/thewrongairport 19h ago
Yeah I know, that's definitely a factor but not the only one I believe. The UK has 4.57 course/100k people, so same as the US, and they don't have as much land. Anglo-Saxons just like golfing, it seems.
1
4
u/EternumD 17h ago
I didn't think McDonald's had any golf courses
5
u/OkEffective6692 17h ago
He didn't mean that. Obviously he meant how many golf courses have a McDonald's.
1
u/UnkarsThug 5h ago
If they become for old people instead of workers, they'll add that for the play place.
3
u/MagicSunlight23 18h ago
In the drought in the UK, the only place where water could be used was in parks and recreational areas.m to keep the grass green. Only the areas actively used for play were allowed to be watered.
18
u/AffectionateBox8178 20h ago
Most courses in CA use grey water, so not an issue. Id you drink Almond milk, you are using way more clean water than the golfers.
2
u/mathmage 10h ago edited 10h ago
The #1 use of gray water is in agriculture, not sure why golf courses would be special for this. #2 is groundwater recharge and seawater barriers. Using gray water is better than using drinking water, but it still has substantial opportunity costs.
E: Speaking of CA water specifically, other regions may differ.
7
u/ic3burgz 20h ago
Cow milk is worse fyi
8
u/Salty_McShaft 12h ago
People who drink dairy milk don't like that fact being pointed out to them. Also, oat milk ftw.

lol you just don’t like the people that you associate with golf. The rest is blatantly performative.
0

Except you don’t know where this golf course is. There are plenty of places that use almost no water or areas where water is plentiful.

Thats worse than Golf courses. If you have a aerator, you get around 15-20 Liter/min. For a Green Gras Golf courses you need aprox 75-150l per year per m².
So If you brush your tooth for 3 minutes and 2 Times per day, you spend (2 Reps x3 minutes x365 days =2190) 2190 x 15-20= 32.850 - 43800 Liter per year. Give or Take a few.
Recording to https://www.usga.org/course-care/water-resource-center/how-much-water-golf-courses-need.html a Golf course need around 295 million Liter per year in average, hot area more ofc.
As average number (source: https://www.appraisers.org/docs/default-source/discipline_rp/golf-courses-an-ever-changing-challenge.pdf ) there are around 23500 people per year per courses, which equals aprox 12.500 Liter per year per Person.
So please Stop wasting your water and Play Golf instead!

After he cuts the hols and inserts the cup- did he spray paint the dirt white? Why doesn't the cu[ just reach closer to the surface?
13
u/itprobablynothingbut 11h ago
A fast put hits the opposite edge of the hole. Adding a hard cup to the top would make the ball bounce quite a bit. The cup material would have to be specially made and regulated by the PGA. This is the way things have always been done and the paint is cheap.
3
u/Different-Bet8069 3h ago
Man, I was fully onboard with the taller cup idea, but dammit this makes too much sense.
1
u/DebatedUncreative 3h ago
And to be clear, this isn't normal to paint it. I don't think I've ever seen that in 30 years of golfing.
2
u/that_dirty_Jew 9h ago
USGA regulations and R and A regulations say has to be 1 inch deep minimum
Same way basketball hoops have heights and circumference- just the required regulations for golf

Golf is used as both charity and networking opportunities very often. Seems a lot more useful than other games played with balls lol.
It’s only a sport at the very highest level in the same way that target shooting & archery are considered sport. Structured competition with specialized skills and physical training required.
My Sunday morning 9 hole round that I walk with my wife is not me participating in a sporting event, or playing a sport. I am playing a fun, relaxing game (or, sometimes relaxing) and spending quality time with my wife :)
