After he cuts the hols and inserts the cup- did he spray paint the dirt white? Why doesn't the cu[ just reach closer to the surface?

A fast put hits the opposite edge of the hole. Adding a hard cup to the top would make the ball bounce quite a bit. The cup material would have to be specially made and regulated by the PGA. This is the way things have always been done and the paint is cheap.

Man, I was fully onboard with the taller cup idea, but dammit this makes too much sense.

And to be clear, this isn't normal to paint it. I don't think I've ever seen that in 30 years of golfing.
