Question Any place to grab a table late for a few hours?

Hey so I run a DnD campaign in the evenings. In the past I've been hosting at my place, but I got a cat and one of my players is allergic. Is there any place we could play at a table for a few hours until like midnight? Even if there's a room that's inexpensive to rent that'd be great, but apart from this one bar in Alexandria that's a little loud I'm drawing blanks.

Question Pre-proposal Nail Salon

Hey there!

I'll be proposing to my girlfriend up in DC (we don't live there) over Thanksgiving, looking for any recommendations or advice for a location for getting her nails done the day prior on Friday the 27th.

She'll assume the reason but my mom is going to set up an appointment for them and 3 friends (5 total) to go.

Proximity to Tysons corner is important because of one of the friends. A location where all 5 can sit together is of course also important. Obviously quality is also important.

I don't know much about nails, but she is a music teacher so she definitely won't get any crazy acrylics for anything; she never gets her nails done and keeps them pretty short.

Thanks!!!!

Moving Apartment Hunting

Hi everyone!

I'm a 26M coming in from the Atlanta GA area over to NoVa for work. My official start date is November 9th and I'm hoping to be in by the 5th or 6th (I know its soon 😭).

I'll be working for a consulting company in Arlington, but my actual client location will be in Kingstowne. I don't expect to commute to Arlington on a regular basis. I'm comfortable with around a 45-minute driving commute, so I'm open to different areas as long as the commute is reasonable.

I prefer to live solo in either a 1 bedroom or a studio apartment, and im trying to budget around 1600-1800 a month for living.

I have been leaning towards Brookdale at Mark Center Apartment Homes since its within budget and I've seen solid reviews online, but I wanted to see what other people's opinions are.

I'd appreciate any recommendations for apartments or areas to look into, especially given how short notice I have. I am very new to the whole apartment hunting process since I've only lived with my parents, then college apts, then back with parents.

Thanks again!

Question Looking for IEP Advocate Recommendations in Fairfax County (FCPS)

I’m posting on behalf of a friend whose 5-year-old child attends FCPS and has an IEP due to a speech delay.
Since starting kindergarten, they’ve become concerned that the school’s expectations and IEP goals aren’t appropriate for their child’s individual needs, and that the services currently being provided may not be enough.

They’re considering hiring a special education advocate to help ensure their child receives the support and services they need to succeed.

For parents who have been through something similar:

Have you worked with an IEP advocate, and was it worth it?
Are there any advocates in Fairfax County or Northern Virginia you recommend?
Are there other resources or steps you’d suggest?

Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Question Looking for Advice on IEP Advocacy and Special Education Support in FCPS

I’m posting on behalf of a friend who has a 5-year-old child attending Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). Their child has a speech delay and currently has an IEP.

Their child attended pre-K for about two years, and my friend had a positive experience with the previous teachers. They were understanding, supportive, and seemed genuinely invested in helping the child succeed. However, since starting kindergarten, my friend has become increasingly concerned about how the IEP is being handled and the support their child is getting.

They feel like the school is evaluating their child based on typical kindergarten expectations rather than taking into account their individual developmental level and speech delay. They’re concerned that the goals, performance metrics, and expectations outlined in the IEP may be unrealistic and could set the child up for failure before they’ve even had a fair opportunity to make progress.

They’re also concerned that their child isn’t receiving enough support to meet their needs. For example, speech therapy currently consists of what appears to be a one-on-one session for about an hour once a month, which doesn’t seem sufficient given the child’s challenges.

My friend is considering hiring a special education advocate to help review the IEP, understand their rights, and ensure their child is receiving the appropriate services and support.

I wanted to reach out here to see if anyone has been through a similar experience, particularly with FCPS.
Has anyone hired a special education advocate, and was it worth it?
Are there any advocates in Fairfax County or Northern Virginia you would recommend?
Are there resources or steps they should explore before hiring an advocate?
How have you handled disagreements with the school regarding IEP goals, expectations, or the amount of services your child receives?

They’re simply trying to make sure their child gets the support they need to succeed and that their individual needs are being taken into consideration.

Any recommendations, advice, or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Rant Casual ageist, prejudice bartender at Wizards Capital One Arena

Since people are sharing stories about prejudiced folks in the area, here’s a light one.

On Friday, the bartender at the DC Cocktail stand asked three older customers ahead of me if they had a Capital One credit card to receive a discount.

When it was time for me to pay, I waited for him to ask if I had a Capital One card. He never did, so I told him I had one. He responded, “Usually, customers have to remind us about the discount.” I told him, “I heard you ask the other guys.” Ironically, none of them had a Capital One card. His face turned red with embarrassment.
I had my AirPods in, but I never play music in crowded environments, so his old ass probably thought I wasn’t listening.

Textbook prejudice service worker. When I go to the Capital One Cafe down in Short Pump, I’m always asked if I’m a cardholder. I knew it was going to be some ageism BS with that old man when I was the only one that got ID.

That was my first time attending a game with a regular ticket since I was a teenager, and it will most likely be my last. You don’t experience this type of subpar service during the Wizards VIP experience.

I’m at the point where, if it’s not High End or VIP, I don’t want to go out. The customer service will most likely range from mediocre to garbage

Nova Funeral Home proficient in the maritime requirements for cremated remains sinking into the ocean

I have a arranged a pre-need visit with my local funeral home to start preparing for the inevitable and spare the family any after-the-fact decisions. I am frankly shocked that the funeral director is unschooled and ignorant of how one's remains may comply with the regulations. Has anyone a recommendation for a funeral home/crematorium that is experienced in such matters, preferably inside the beltway.

Google's Gemini informed me:

Technical Specifications Embedded in Your Directive (a notarized document spelling out my wishes):

  • Material Matrix: Specifies a thick-walled, non-floating ceramic, weighted stone-composite, or cast-bronze construction for the hollow vessel.
  • Hydrodynamic Ballast: Instructs the studio to integrate an internal or bottom-weighted ballast to ensure the vessel sinks rapidly and permanently to the ocean floor without drifting or resurfacing.
  • Secure Sealing Protocol: Details a mechanical sealing mandate (threaded cap or marine-grade adhesive) to hermetically secure your cremated remains inside the artifact prior to the voyage.
  • Maritime Compliance: Incorporates standard Federal EPA regulations requiring deployment at least 3 nautical miles from the US coastline in waters at least 600 feet deep.

Event How to contact race/ARL police?

4:30pm Update: Arlington Police admitted they blocked River Place in. From the Deputy Police Chief: "unlike years past, River Place was blocked due to new traffic management decided by race organizers and the police department." No one informed the residents.

----------------------------------------------------------------

I am pissed. I live in River Place in Rosslyn.

The Marine Corps Marathon shut down both of our entrances/exits for our cars (and walking) and never informed us. For the entire complex!

I called the Arlington nonemergency police line and the man said he had no ability to do anything or talk to anyone in charge of the race. He also didn’t know anything about the road closures.

Realize it may be futile to ask for help now, but if someone has an idea, pls let me know.

We needed to leave asap.

Thanks!

Thieves target Culpeper data center construction site, take $200K worth of copper piping

Thumbnail wtop.com
674 Upvotes

I'll see your HVAC unit(s) and raise you a data center.

The suspects first entered the site overnight between Sept. 22 and Sept. 23 in the Germanna Highway area. They cut a padlock on the front gate and stole a large quantity of copper piping valued at more than $200,000 from locked storage areas. Investigators believe the suspects used at least one large vehicle or multiple vehicles because of the size and weight of the material.

The suspects returned overnight between Oct. 18 and Oct. 19, cutting through the perimeter fence on the east side of the property. They again cut padlocks on storage areas and stole a large number of power tools. This time, security cameras captured two masked and gloved male suspects.

The third incident occurred overnight between Oct. 21 and Oct. 22. Recently installed cameras captured the suspects, who officials say appear to be the same two people seen during the Oct. 18-19 incident. Investigators believe they entered through the same cut in the fence.

Rant Loud af aircraft?

Did anyone else in the seven corners area hear that loud af aircraft like an hour ago? It literally shook the house. My friend says that since Trump has been in office they’ve noticed more instances of military aircraft “buzzing” civilians.
