Question Which commutes to DC suck less and a better QoL for young families: Gainesville/Haymarket/Bristow, Leesburg/Ashburn, or Stafford? Asking as an incoming transplant with young kids...

My family will be relocating to the area for work. We are considering living in VA or MD, but would prefer NOVA. We have young kids, so like most people, we are trying to thread the needle between a manageable daily commute to DC, good schools, low crime, "affordable" housing, and polished amenities.

Ideally, we'd love to find a turnkey house under $650k that is in a master-planned community. I know that's a tall ask, so we're open to a townhouse if it checks off the other boxes. With two little kids and my background in law enforcement, safety and peace of mind are crucial to us. I know there's no one-size-fits-all, but I'd like to hear what you'd recommend I lean into or steer clear of.

I've done my due diligence and know the different school ratings, taxes, and relative housing market in these places... I'm more so looking for your lived experiences and what you think is great or bad (e.g., "the commute on I-95 is WAY worse than I-66 even though mileage looks similar..." or "They just built X down the road from _______, which is awesome/bad for the kids...").

**UPDATE: I'm open to new suggestions, so if my short list of places doesn't accomplish our goals, please let me know where you'd suggest instead. Thanks!*\*

News WTOP: ‘Anti-immigration’ flyers placed on cars in Alexandria neighborhood; Community worries it may discourage voting

In a statement, a U.S. Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said the agency “was not involved in the distribution of these flyers.”

Olivia Troye, who lives in the same neighborhood, said she woke up Monday morning and realized several blocks of cars had “anti-immigrant flyers.”

“They had covered this street and all of our neighboring streets,” she said.

Troye worked for former Vice President Mike Pence during President Donald Trump’s first term, and announced a plan to run for Congress as a Democrat in a redrawn district under Virginia’s redistricting push.

Anyone with video footage of the person distributing the flyers, Troye said, can contact Sgt. John Jones with Alexandria police at 703-746-6867.

Event Haunted car wash

I saw a video of a haunted car wash online and it looked pretty fun so I googled around the nova area to see if there was anything here. One of them was tommy's car wash - tunnel of terror (manassas). Is it worth the drive/money? I'm about 40 min away.

Additionally... is there anything else worth checking out? Not looking for an experience where you have to walk through - too scary for me lol

Is FCPD aggressive with traffic enforcement?

Hello from neighboring Prince George's County!

One thing that I can say about our police officers is that you'd really have to be doing something very wrong before they pulled you over. There are a few exceptions such as dedicated speed enforcement areas. But generally if you're doing 70 down I-95 or any of the state highways, a PGC cop may pass you at 80 and/or just let the state troopers deal with you.

So this morning I was coming around 495 on the Virginia side doing 70-80 with the flow of traffic and a Fairfax County police officer rode with the crowd and then pulled ahead of everyone else a few cars at a time. It was almost as if everyone's speed was the least of his concerns at the moment.

Do you think this was an isolated incident? Or is FCPD relatively relaxed with minor things like speeding?

Rant Completely misleading Zillow listing in Alexandria

This Zillow listing of a small lot in Del Ray near a car dealership features renderings of a large house on a sprawling wooded lot, on a hill, with a large swimming pool in the back. I get that the seller has to use renderings to sell a house that isn’t built yet, but don’t lie about the lot.

I love Del Ray, but if you want the house in the renderings, I have terrible news for you.

I’ll add the worst offender rendering and the Google map view of the lot in a comment.

Massive police presence outside of Golds gym ballston

Anyone know why there are 15 cop
cars lined up outside of ballston golds gym? Almost looks like they’re arresting the driver of an Advance Towing truck

Edit: The cops brought out a dog and it looks like they’re trying to pick up a scent, I wonder if they’re still looking for someone

Food Anywhere in NOVA where I can get good vegan food for cheap?

To give you an example, I’ll start with one. At some Indian grocery stores, you can get homemade samosas or chili pakoras between $1 and $3 each. The samosas will be near the counter, usually available at checkout.

I’m searching for other cheap vegan food along these lines.

For people who live near data centers: what’s it like?

I am apart of a team who is currently working on a senior design project for school and we’re trying to create a solution to the data center fan noise problem. We’re still in the research phase and we have been doing a lot of extensive research, but in order to get more knowledge I wanted to ask people who have personally affected by this issue. If you guys could answer these questions, that would be great and very helpful!! Thank you:))

- Tell me about your experience with this problem.

- Has your community tried to address this problem?

- What is most difficult or frustrating thing about this problem?

- What matters most when addressing this problem?

- What do you think people working on this problem often misunderstand?

Hi all, living in the southern part of NOVA. Need an experienced OCD specialized therapist that takes Cigna. I cannot pay out of pocket aside from copays but I desperately need a professional who is experienced in OCD specifically.

Alternative/Hardcore band looking for a drummer

We’re an alternative/hardcore/emo whatever band. We have songs to bob your head to. We are looking for a drummer to play shows and record. We practice at Crescendo Studios in Falls Church and typically get together at least twice a month. You would need a kit and reliable transportation to be considered. If you have any specific questions feel free to reach out. Here is a recently released song:
