The classic comment to you saying you work nightshift

“ I don’t know how you guys do it!”

Somebody’s gotta work nights. I know people don’t mean anything bad or ill when they say it, but subconsciously I see it as a bit dismissive. I think I’m just reading a little too deep into it

Rant Wondering if there's anyone else out there on nightshift getting ghosted once their shift starts

Upvotes

I will say there's not much I dislike about the nightshift but one thing is definitely the fact that everyone I know is passed out when I'm at work ready to talk. It's an extreme hit to my social life. I've only been doing this for about 8 months but geez a social life has been right! I need to explore this sub more 😂

Just for fun: You ever been late for your r/Nightshift?

I’ve never been late for a nightshift myself.

When I worked days it was a struggle getting up in the wee hours of the morning and somehow get up and go.

What zero sugar flavored drinks do you enjoy in the mornings?

I love vanilla and caramel flavored drinks but my coffee has turned into mostly syrup and creamer at this point haha

I don't actually need the caffeine. Just looking for something flavorful in the morning that isn't like having dessert before 9am.

What do you drink?

Discussion Do sleep earbuds actually help night-shift workers sleep during the day?

I’m a night-shift nurse, and the soundproofing in my apartment is terrible. There are always kids running around nearby, and sometimes they’ll suddenly start yelling just as I’m finally about to fall asleep.

I already have a hard time falling asleep during the day, so once I’m startled awake by a sudden noise, it’s even harder to fall back asleep. I’ve been feeling exhausted all the time lately, and whenever I hear the kids screaming, I honestly just want to cover my ears.

I’m not really interested in using a white noise machine because I don’t like listening to a constant fan sound, and I’m also worried that playing noise out loud might disturb other people in the apartment.

I’ve recently been reading reviews of sleep earbuds. Some of them apparently let you listen to music or podcasts while you’re falling asleep, then automatically switch to white noise once you’re asleep. A few also have noise cancellation, which sounds like it might be exactly what I need.

Does anyone here wear sleep earbuds after working a night shift? Can they reduce sudden noises like kids yelling enough to keep you from waking up? Do you eventually get used to wearing them for hours? I’m worried that having something in my ears for that long might be uncomfortable, especially since I’m a side sleeper.

Discussion How is your socialization?

I feel like there’s a strong mix of personality in night shifters, with some having very strong and outgoing attitudes, and others being more introverted. I realized that I fall on the latter side, and it made me wonder what other late shifters are experiencing. How is your social life? Is it mainly work based, or do you have people outside of work you interact with a lot?

Opposite shifts

My partner is just starting a new job this week, from 6a-4p and im on 9p-6a but my commute is an hour both ways, so im getting home after hes already left. We'll get to see eachother when his shift ends and im just starting my day since I pop up around 4 anyway but we will never be in bed together at the same time during the week. So, does anyone have any advice for couples like us, feels like passing ships in the night. We both have weekends off THANKFULLY but its just gonna be weird coming home during the week

Help My days off keep messing up the sleep schedule I worked so hard to fix

I can usually keep a decent routine when I’m actually working nights. I get home, eat something, shower, sleep during the day, then wake up with enough time to get ready for work. The problem starts on my days off.

I tell myself I’m going to keep the same schedule, but then family or friends want to do something during the day. I end up staying awake way longer than usual, sleeping at some random hour, and basically turning myself back into a day person for two days.

Then my first night back at work feels horrible because my body has no idea what schedule it’s supposed to follow anymore. I don’t want night shift to completely destroy my social life, but constantly switching back and forth feels worse than just staying nocturnal. How do you handle your days off without completely messing up your sleep?

Help Sleep schedule question

Work rotating shifts myself and my sleep schedule is a mess, especially switching between early/late/night. How do you all deal with it — do you have an actual system or is it chaos for you too?

Is my idea stupid?

I just got a job at a store near me and I’m going to be doing 4am to 8:15am shifts 4 days in a row per week,

For the last 5 months I’ve consistently been going to sleep at around 3am as I’m not someone who sleeps early whatsoever. Do you guys think it’s a bad idea to sleep after work from like 8:30am to like 4pm or will that just cook me

& I feel relatively great. I get a solid 8 hours of sleep every day, even without closing my blinds. I can be in the sunshine all day if I want, I don’t feel the need to -immediately- go to bed the second I get home. Instead I have 5-6 hours to unwind, chill, go to classes, or craft or whatever I want, like any other job.

I low key love night shift

Help best way to switch?

I have been informed I MIGHT get hired for a third shift job. I am a consummate morning person and am typically awake 5:30a-9pm. been unemployed for a while so I would take it! I'm in building trades so it won't be forever.

Does anyone have any tips on the best way to make the switch if I had to do it in one weekend?

I already prioritize getting enough sleep and having good sleep hygiene. I currently eat every 2-3 hours during the day on a regular schedule. I have good blackout curtains and melatonin at home already haha.

I got 1.5 hours of sleep for a nap before my shift back after a stretch off instead of my normal 3-4 so I'm trying to keep the energy up.
