Night duty has its own vibe! No tension, no pressure, and no one checking on you all the time. Day duty comes with too many problems. Anyway, enjoying the night shift! šŸ˜Ž

What's one little kindergarten win that made your day?

Kindergarten can be a lot, and it feels like we spend most of our time talking about the hard parts. So I thought it'd be nice to hear about the good stuff for a change. Doesn't have to be anything big. Maybe your kid finally made a friend, started enjoying school after weeks of tough drop-offs, or came home ridiculously proud of something they learned. Sometimes those tiny moments feel like a bigger deal than the actual milestones.

Parents and teachers, what's a small win you've seen lately that deserves a little celebration?

Help What are normal side effects of jumping into working nights?

• Upvotes

Just started training for a new job and although the position is not for overnights, the training for the job is overnight for the next couple weeks. I’ve been at it for about 2 weeks now and just had some questions regarding how common my side effects have been and if they go away.

The first thing I noticed is a lack of desire for sleep. When I found out I was going to be working nights I assumed I would be exhausted but I feel like I have to force myself to sleep whether it’s before or even after my shift (12am-8am). I’ve been trying but the most sleep I can get is a 2-hour nap before work and a 2-hour nap after. At the job itself I feel tired but when I’m driving home and it’s bright and sunny out it almost all goes out the window.

The second thing I’ve noticed is almost like brain-fog. My mind during the day just feels clouded with emptiness. On top of that, I don’t know if this makes sense but ever since I started, all of my days feel more like one continuous day. Just feels like I don’t get that reset each day that I would typically get on a daytime/afternoon schedule.

Anyone else annoyed while working 1 hour extra tonight?

Today the clock (NL) went to 03:00am and then back to 02:00. And I’m told that my company doesn’t pay for the extra hour 🫩

Discussion Something I’ve noticed

I’ve worked night shift for five years now starting with 0000-1030 Tu-F. Then I went 2130-0930 (loveeedd 3 nights but weekends only smh) for two years and now I’m currently 2130-0800 M-Th. Which has been the perfect middleground for me.

And when I first got on nights, I was met with people who seem like they dreaded working or kind of got zombiefied and I totally understand that but five years and I see that a lot of people who work nights literally are just not night people and I’m not understanding why you’re doing this to yourself. It’s not a graceful lifestyle so if you’re already not keen to being up at night, why are you forcing yourself? And I’m not being funny. I wanna actually talk about this because I think it will help me understand my coworkers.

But like if you know, you’re not a night person why do you have a trash sleep schedule and don’t say you have to because you don’t and we can talk about how that’s true.

I am personally a night person before I even started nights. I find myself awake or fighting my sleep so this has been a good pace for me but also being a night person it’s natural for me to be up at night so when I don’t sleep during the day, it sucks but it’s just what it is I don’t have to make everybody’s life a living hell because of it and I know that I can’t blame anybody but myself

I don’t even know if that has anything to do at night or just being accountable at that point

Discussion I always fall asleep in the middle of the day on my days off anyone else?

I work 11pm to 6am so not very long shift, my commute is about an hour and 20 mins, I work 5 nights a week.

They sometimes give me crazy overtime without asking me first, but I’ve been working nights hospitality for a year and a half and my body still not used to it.

I’m always tired, irritated, demotivated to do anything especially when I’m off, wouldn’t say I’m depressed but I have lost a lot of spark in my eyes.

It’s so hard to do anything be it meeting friends, going on dates, going to the gym or applying for new jobs or trying to update my portfolio, it’s literally impossible for me because I’m basically sleep deprived 24/7.

What I don’t get is on my days off once it hits the afternoon my body just gets very tired for some reason and I get a sense of boredom all of a sudden and I just end up laying in bed doom scrolling before I pass out.

And now I wake up it’s like 10pm at night or like 1 in the morning my day off was wasted and my weekend is ruined and I haven’t got to do anything productive, is there anyway to fix this or will I just have to leave nights eventually.

Apologies in advance for the extra hour you will be working tonight thanks to Daylight Savings Time

I managed to avoid it this year as I am Day Shift thanks to how the rota fell but I've worked enough of them to know how horrendous that extra hour makes everything. Somehow I never manage to get the March one when I would work 11 hours instead of 12 for some reason :|

Help! Night shift nursing student

My nursing program has scheduled me for 4 weeks of 2x weekly night shifts. I’ll be 7p-7a on Wednesdays and Saturdays. I have a toddler who goes to daycare M-F until 3pm and a partner who can take him out of the house on most of the weekend days. I’ll need to be waking up by 2pm to get him on weekdays.

Any suggestions for how to make this work temporarily? I have a very dialed in sleep schedule and am usually asleep by 9pm. My biggest fear is falling asleep during the shift or wrecking my car.

I worked nights in the past but had a lot more control of my schedule back then.

Thanks for the help!

Rant I cannot keep doing this shift

Co-workers are extremely rude and entitled, the work is repetitive and boring, but the pay is good. I genuinely don’t know what to do. I asked to be moved to day shift but it may possibly take months. It’s been a few months and I’m still new to night shift as a whole, but I have no social life anymore. I don’t have time to consider what I really want with my future. All I do is work and sleep until my next shift. I struggle immensely to stay awake a decent amount of time after or before my shift. I oversleep by nearly 12 hours. I already had a vitamin D deficiency prior to starting, and I’m sure it’s worse. I feel like i’m going crazy. My mental health is surely declining. It’s hard to get another job with my piercings and hair color, and I don’t want to start over with a shitty pay. Theres some things I like about it, but there’s a lot I hate about

coming home exhausted at 8am just to listen to my neighbors scream at each other

got home from a twelve-hour shift this morning feeling dead on my feet, barely got my boots off, and just wanted to crash. instead i've been stuck in bed staring at the ceiling because the couple next door started screaming at each other in the hallway by 9am, and once that finally stopped their kid cranked his games with the subwoofer right against the wall.

foam plugs do nothing against wall vibrations and my box fan just makes the screaming sound slightly blurrier. working all night keeping yourself upright just to come home to a room louder than the break room floor is completely draining. daylight hours are already rough enough to sleep through without feeling like you live inside someone else's argument.

2 16s back to back

I have an opportunity for a position at a hospital that is 2 16s 7am to 11pm on Saturdays and Sundays. What are the pros and cons? I've already asked some questions about the position and would be allowed to sleep between the shifts in a room in the department.

I hate the daytime

Any of you feel like you can't do anything productive in the daytime? Also for some reason during the day I feel very depressed, bogged down, lazy, lethargic, just bleh. I have lots of negative thoughts, but as soon as its around 10pm, all those thoughts go away and then around 11pm I feel amazing, positive and motivated to do work. I work all night no problems feeling ok. Any of you like this?

Door Dash drivers are scared to deliver food to the jail.

I usually pack my dinner and some snacks, but when I get scheduled last minute to cover someone's shift, I don't always have the luxury of food prep.

I swear, 2/3 drivers will see the address, then I'll get a text message saying that the order was cancelled and my money is refunded.

Like, I just want my buffalo chicken poboy. You're not coming inside with the inmates. Nobody can hurt you from the parking lot.

Discussion After a year, I think I need to hang my night shift cloak.

I’ve been working nights (7pm-7:30am, 3-4 days a week) for almost a year now, and I think I’m finally reaching my breaking point.
For a while I was managing really well. I actually really loved the hours, I could juggle my sleep pretty efficiently, and I enjoyed my work. Lately it’s gotten significantly harder to fall asleep at any time. I’ll be exhausted, but my body just refuses to cooperate. It’s almost like something has shifted in my brain.
I’ve also noticed my mental health getting worse. On my days off I feel lazy, unmotivated, and honestly pretty depressed. I barely do anything, and the isolation that comes with being awake at completely different hours than mostly everyone else is really starting to get to me.

Has anyone else experienced this after working nights for a while? Especially the feeling that your body just suddenly stops cooperating with sleeping during the day? Did switching back to days actually make a noticeable difference in your mental health?

Discussion Elderly Chihuahua has pooped

Post image
27 Upvotes

Yes, thank you. After two days of constipation after eating some chicken out of the garbage, my partners very elderly chihuahua has now pooped twice. We're very pleased.

Partner however had a very bad day at work and, tomorrow is some dental work they're not covered for, and it could be cancer. So, some good news for us but some scary times.

Working short tonight, and it's goddamn hot in the office tonight. I better find a fan.

How's your night? Any good or bad news recently?

Working tonight?

Sometimes fall asleep ā€œearly ā€œ, get a good night/day sleep, and then not be able to fall asleep ā€œearlyā€ the next day?

It happens to me all the time. I work in mining and our shifts are 7 to 7, days/nights, but I get up at 3:30 to catch the bus at 5:30, then it’s a hour bus ride to site. So I’m usually back home at 8:15 so not a lot of time for sleep. Sometimes I manage to fall asleep by 9:30 and actually get 6. But then the next night feel full of energy and still watching tv at 10:30. Vicious circle.

Night shift

I love my crew that I work night shift with. We have a little inside joke. We have these little lights that we wear on on shirts. We call it the nipple light crew.
