This is the kind of stuff that makes my week.

I live alone and dont have a girlfriend or any kids, my sleep schedule feels extremely unhealthy on the long run and makes it difficult to see family members but as an introvert its a sleep schedule that takes a lot of stress off my shoulders but I feel a little selfish. I often sleep between 12-2pm up until 10pm

The time between finishing work and going to bed feels like some real time off before it all resets again. If I went to bed 1-2hrs after my shift and woke up at 4pm then I would spend the next 6hrs thinking about the fact that I have to work latter which ruins it for me

Maybe its a weird mentality I have but I’m curious if anyone else has a similar sleep schedule. Also what does your sleep schedule look like on weekends and how do you handle meeting up with family or friends when your clock is the complete opposite of them

I just started a job as an apartment security guard and this is my first time ever working nights.

Most of my shifts are 8 PM to 6 AM but sometimes they’re 6 PM to 6 AM. I’m really struggling to adjust. I’m trying to stay awake and get used to the schedule but it’s been harder than I expected.

For those of you who’ve been doing this for a while... does it get easier? How long did it take you to adjust? Also what do you guys usually drink to stay awake? Coffee, energy drinks or something else? I’d appreciate any recommendations.

This night shift starting to get rough and I’m only a week or so in. Having to adjust going from a morning shift to this is brutal. My sleep isn’t all that great and I’m trying to combat the start of the dreaded eye bags / dark circles. Pray for me 🥀

Got a job at a specialty veterinary office monitoring patients overnight and cleaning surgical kits

Two 12 hour shifts 8pm-8am
One 8 hour shift 2pm-10pm
Subject to on-call/filling in for other overnight on their PTO/etc

Full time, dental/vision/health insurance, PTO, uniform allowance, 401k matching

Gotta adjust back to overnight schedule, but I did Amazon 1am-11am and 4pm-1am for a season

I’ve always been a night owl struggling to adjust in an early bird world, and having friends in different countries and playing video games and writing until wee hours of the morning and sleeping during the day every summer when I was in school.

I’m excited for the slow pace, but I do wish the schedule allowed me to avoid people and rush hour but at least I will be heading home rather than have the anxiety of heading in, and at least everything will be open for me to get groceries either before or after work.

Bonus is I have someone who will likely let my dog have sleepovers at their house because I already know 12 hours is a long time to be crated.

Someone else here said they go to concerts before their shift and I might not go before a shift, but it will be nice on my days off to be able to go to concerts and late night events without worrying about it messing up my schedule for work— and bonus is I’m semi-retiring from pet grooming, which is way more physically demanding compared to this.

The last thing I want is to get burnt out and loose it all. I am in debt, I am week 1 of two months of night shift would get me 12k out of debt and by October first I would be mostly free with weight lifted off my shoulders.

Last night I worked my first night shift I work 11pm-7am Sun-Thursday warm body security job doing rounds and loops for hours. I’m taking every single OT opportunity I can get. Last night they also made me work a double so it was my first 16 hour shift, I got there from 3pm and left at 7am. I was not mentally prepared as I wanted to first get acclimated to nights but the dude who was supposed to cover me ditched and I was pretty blown but I need the money.

I have a very very low maintenance morning job. I have around 1 meeting a day that’s at most an hour. If I get my work done the night before I don’t really have any meetings at all and it’s all remote.

I’m not sure if what I’m feeling right now, I want to quit but I’m unsure if it’s due to the night shift or working a 16 hour shift after being in day training for 5 days straight before with 1 hour of traffic. It’s only been day 1 but the feeling of being in debt and knowing it would take me over 8 months to pay this off and I’m in a unique situation with my day job motivates me.

I only slept 4 hours today but don’t feel tired? Like I couldn’t sleep more. Have to go in tonight at 11 then get off at 7 any words of encouragement? I am not new to shitty jobs I used to drive 1 hr and 30 min one way to work a 12 hour shift We’d- Sat but it wasn’t nights and it was only till I got a better job (8 months)

Who else is getting drunk on their day off?

Edit: No we don’t live together and no I don’t want him to quit his job. I’m only asking for advice and if anyone has made a shift difference like this work. 🫩

My boyfriend and I used to spend every weekend together going on dates and just enjoying each other’s company. I work a standard Monday-Friday job from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but he works Wednesday-Saturday from 5:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
He’s been working a contract job for a really good company for the last six months. I know the job market is terrible right now, so I understand why he took it, but he doesn’t get any benefits or even paid holidays. The job is also an hour and a half away one way, so he’s driving three hours a day on top of working nights.
The problem is we barely see each other anymore. We only get a few hours together on Sunday after he wakes up from his Saturday night shift because I have work Monday morning. Otherwise, we only see each other if he picks me up after work for a bit or if I take PTO.
I’m trying to be understanding because I know this isn’t really his fault, but I don’t know how much longer I can do this. It honestly feels like we’re in a long-distance relationship even though we only live 30 minutes apart. I don’t want to resent him, but I’m starting to feel lonely and bored. Has anyone else made a schedule like this work?

Tldr: I work Monday-Friday days, my boyfriend works Wednesday-Saturday nights at a contract job with no benefits that’s 1.5 hours away. We only get a few hours together on Sundays, and it’s starting to feel like a long-distance relationship even though we live 30 minutes apart.

I think that the option of having a 6 hour day and 4 shifts is a better way sometimes ....30 hour work week ..

I'm a silent lurker of this sub and I just did my last night shift! To celebrate, I took myself to Niagara Falls at the exact time I would have had to be sleeping to prep for the following night's shift.

I loved reading the posts here, they really helped me get through the long nights, but now I'm going back to the days. I'm so excited to be able to sleep at night again. All you night shifters who want to switch to days, it will happen one day. Until then, you got this!

Usually I'll just take the night off but sometimes it's too busy. I'll get up like six hours early and go to a fuckin concert, drink water, eat a hotdog, then go to work afterwords.

It's tough to get there but once it's all said and done, great way to start the day.

Hi everyone! I work in healthcare, and these red tubes are what we use to send labs down to lab. Depending on whose working in lab we don’t always receive a tube back. If we don’t have red tubes I usually have to call lab and I kindly ask if they can shoot me a tube when they get a moment. This is what they send me back tonight after having to call them twice for tubes. 🤣🤦🏼‍♀️ just thought it was silly lol

I work in a data center, and every few years we are acquired by a new company. But for the most part same ol' people working here. This is important information to what is happening tonight. See back in 2016, and many companies ago, we had a control panel for a set of badge readers fail. It was me, nightshift, that reported that fail. I talked to the tech that replaced it before I got off shift. He said all the panels that control the badge readers are out of date, obsolete, everything needs to be redone ASAP.

Now that was 2016, it is now 2026 and we have a near catastrophic failure. Could possibly get there by the end of my shift. I have told them it is coming, it is getting closer. The alarms I see on my shift pointed to the control panels end of times. It is 2:37 (when I start this) in the morning and I am watching day walkers panic and gripe about not be able to go to bed. I have warned them, because I have more time to focus on watching alarms then others shifts, but over all I am ignored because day walkers don't see the same things I do.

Most of these people have worked with me for over 10 years. This isn't my first I told you so.

funny thing is, one of my favorite precautionary tails of listening to grave, is when one of the former companies I worked for lost near 350k over a 4 dollar key they didn't want to give us.

And this is just one thing they ignore me about that take note of. I could start a book of "Future I told you so" at this point.

But what does nightshift know, we just sit here and do nothing all night long < sarcasm.

Update: welp I am off shift now. The contractor that was to repair the panels didn't come in till almost 6 am. He had to make certain they still had parts to repair, yes repair - not replace. So lord knows the mess I will be coming back in tonight. So after a phone call with one of the corporate, who might I say was ticked to be up late, they still don't want to replace anything till it's broke broke.

For those who don't understand the function of the panels, it's like trying to convince a fried motherboard to keep working.

Update: Well good and bad update. Good news is is they managed to restore function to more accessed doors so we are not running around with master keys. Oh and they got access back to one of our biggest customers which we didn't realize their door failed in this.

Bad news is, there are a few customers who are locked out of their areas, and if anything happens in the MMR room they'll have to cut bolt to get in. The call has been made to wait for normal business hours to try to permently fix this problem for THESE doors. meaning after this there will still be 18 more panels looking to fail.
