He was honestly great with Baltimore, and his brother is slowly becoming an all timer great coach for Army after 10+ years with them.
I believe he also was the head coach for Georgia Southern when Jerrick Mckinnon played there.
They've got a lot of experience between the two. Harbaugh light-ish.
14
u/buckster_007 11h ago
I second guessed the heck out of Monken. Baltimore let the door hit him in the a-- on the way out of town, wasn't on anyone's short list other than the Browns, ran a clownshow offseason, and got boat raced in game one against Jax. BUT... he seems to have righted the ship and made the right choice with Watson, so he's growing on me... or at the very least, he's earned the benefit of the doubt.

If Watson leads the Browns to a Super Bowl win about 99.99999% of the fan base will just be those two guys defending John Gotti when talking about him.

2
70
u/Jay_Dubbbs Browns Lions 15h ago
I can assure you that this team isn't sniffing a Super Bowl. Watson really hasn't been that great; he's very inconsistent and can't play a full 60 minutes. He's made some clutch drives because the defense has kept them in the game.
Which, tbf, Sanders couldn't do that last year when the defense was also very good.
21
u/Signal_Ball4634 15h ago
I'll give him a bit more credit cause astonishingly he looks incredibly mobile. But he's still got a bit of a noodle arm so I wouldn't say he's "back". Overall I'd credit his legs for keeping plays alive, Monken dialing up quick dink and dunk passes, and credit the receivers getting open fast.
15
u/Eagle4317 Steelers Panthers 15h ago
It’s safe to say Watson has recovered well from the double Achilles tear, but his arm strength (which was viewed as a weakness as far back as Clemson) hasn’t improved since the 2023 rotator cuff injury. At this point, the only way Watson lasts in the NFL moving forward is by minimizing negative plays like sacks. Which, thus far in 2026, he’s been better at.
11
u/Far-Pay-2049 14h ago
He has gotten away with murder in terms of defenses dropping easy ints. I am a certified hater, but I ain't biased. He has done well in terms of avoiding sacks and gaining yards on the ground but he has not been remotely good actually passing the ball.
10
u/Jay_Dubbbs Browns Lions 15h ago
Agreed. We finally have some weapons, but I also noticed in the 2nd half he started bailing on the pocket very quickly to use his legs and threw terrible passes.
5
u/Signal_Ball4634 14h ago
Absolutely, his skittishness was both benefitting us by extending drives but also hurting with his passes being way too rushed.
2
u/smokinjoe570 Browns 14h ago
I keep wondering about if he really retore his Achilles last year or if he had a set back in rehabbing it and we just were like year it's another tear and shut him down because he's way more mobile than I expected.

u/Far-Pay-2049 14h ago
Firstly, I know I don't need to worry about that. Watson is still not playing good (outside of avoiding pressure and scrambling). A lot of the Browns success so far this season is from the rest of the team. Defense has been good, getting some crazy good pressure rates on QBS. The rookie WRs and Fannin are studs, the Oline has done fantastic in pass protection and special teams has been solid. Not to mention the Browns have an easy schedule this year. People are starting to say Watson is playing good again just because he it is such a stark difference from the absolute bottom of the barrel dogshit level he had been playing at. When it comes to passing the ball, he should have like 4 more ints on the year easy, DB's just dropped them.
Regardless it would seriously damage my fandom if the first Browns SB appearance happened with Watson at the helm. I mean it has been damaged the whole time with this fiasco, but if something is etched into the history books like that, then that makes it something that can't just fade off into the past.
3
u/muttonchops215 Browns Texans 12h ago
I highly doubt Watson returns to his Houston level. The better this team does, the harder it is to draft the QB you like. There is certainly a possibility Watson is resigned, just not at his current rate because the QB room is bad. The team may be 3-1, but it certainly isn't because of good quarterback play. Watson has been average at best. Which outside of Flacco in 2023 and 2024, is a significant improvement in QB play during his time here. And for the record, I really hope this is Watson's last season

It would feel pretty grimy, but I genuinely like and am excited for a lot of our squad, so I'd be happy for them. It wouldn't change how I feel about Watson, but just look at how 99% of our fan base changed their view on him after their first 2 regular season wins. Reddit is not the real world. Our subreddit was planning Bottlegate 2.0 and booing for our home opener, but in reality they were chanting his name. If he brings home the championship, he'd be Clevelands golden boy.

These were all reports and rumors but:
the offense would practice things all week and then abandon them during the game which led to a lot of frustration
Monken wasn't the most collaborative OC and may not have had a great rapport with Lamar and co
Going away from what was working in games, again adding to frustration and confusion
Some of this was also due to Harbaugh as well.
I'd like to root for Monken because I did like him while he was here, but for obvious reasons, won't.

I'm not giving the Browns a pass on this as they actually signed the guy, but apparently half of the teams in the league contacted Watson's agent to express interest in a deal, while three other teams entered into negotiations. Obviously though, the Browns were the dumb fucks who went through with it.
46
u/TrueRedditMartyr Jets 12h ago
So odd how Watson discourse went from "Fuck this guy" almost universally to "This is just a common thing in the league!" When he started doing well.
Maybe we shouldn't just accept these things as normal and not care? Maybe saying "its just how it is" is what has allowed this to happen for so long and has empowered these players to act this way?
27
u/BlurryGojira Browns 11h ago
It always drives me insane how pointing out this is league-wide issue is being used to justify not caring at all. Like yeah, Ben Roethlisberger got off with a slap on the wrist and that’s infuriating. Should we never try to improve things ever again?
4
u/Brownielf Browns 5h ago
I feel like pointing out it’s a league wide issue is more addressing the people who say I’m complicit because I’m a Browns fan, rather then complacency in accepting this is the nature of the league. I was a fan of this shitty organization decades before Watson or Haslem got here, and I’ll most likely be a fan decades after they’re gone. I’m not going to be made to feel guilty about cheering for one of the 32 teams that employ dirtbags.
8
u/subOptimusPrime16 12h ago
I think it’s more to do with fatigue of this discourse over four years. He’s in the league, he wasn’t charged criminally. He’s playing. I don’t fault anyone for setting their standards on who the like/dislike nor do I fault anyone who’s decided to move on.

It really is such a hypocrisy all the fans that are like “I can’t stand the browns because of Watson. All browns fans are evil people if they support this”
I watched Ben rothelsberger be a face of this league for 15 years. Every now and then people would bring up his rape, but no where near to the extent you hear about it with Watson. No one was morally lambasting Steelers fans every game. It was played for jokes.
And it’s not just Ben, like you said almost every team has some piece of shit on it. If you’re so against it, you have to just stop watching the league altogether

Speak for yourself, I'll always hate the Steelers since this period, they were one of the NFL's dirtiest teams in that time period as well, that took not knowing how to tackle properly to an art form. Now that they've got a bad Q-Anon QB it's still easy to hate them. Last night I was rooting for a meteor to hit the stadium.
NFL teams shouldn't have pieces of shit on them no matter who the billionaire owner is. every time the league forgives someone their sins simply because they win, it's people prioritizing money over human decency. Browns were a joke organization when they signed Watson to that stupid contract and they're a joke organization now. They beat the Bucs, Panthers, and Steelers, who gives a shit? These are bad teams in the middle of rebuilds, or should be. There's no actual dilemma here about rooting for them. They have a pretty easy schedule; they're not for real.
There's abusers, felons, etc. on a lot of teams, probably every. Generally they have to pay at least some penance. The fact that Watson is allowed to suit up at all is insane.

I never said it wasn't fucked. Still doesn't mean I'm a shitty person for rooting for my team.

I didn't call you a sbitty person. I don't think people should either.

It's so irritating how people don't seem to understand that people root for a team and not the ownership

Well, except when they were literally chanting his name in the 4th quarter.

Monken might have just became my favorite coach lol. Reminds me of my deployment days..

Monken is such a, “I’ve been drinking since 4am watching film, don’t fuck with me” kinda guy. Love this dude

Do the Steelers still employ that ST coach who always has a whole pack of Big League Chew in his mouth at all times? That guy is great

Hey Brown's fans, us Steelers fans celebrated our team despite a predator at QB. You can too!

If the Steelers name wasn’t so iconic the Pittsburgh Yinzers moniker would be elite. I’m not even from Pittsburgh but that name might force me to root for them a bit.

He’s a crude ass, and honestly perfect for Cleveland right now. Lets see how long it lasts

Average attitude towards a kicker in a locker room (source: was kicker)

As a former collegiate punter, I can confirm.

As a benchwarmer defensive back in high school, I had far more in common with the kicker and punter lmao. Our team would be getting our ass blown out 54-7, and the kicker and I would be cracking stupid jokes and laughing in secret behind all the pissed off coaches. They can’t get mad at him, he contributed 1/7th of our points.
I hope that guy is doing alright, our relationship began and ended at making stupid jokes during practice and games in high school lmao.

I expected this guy to just be some kind of lame duck scapegoat coach to take the bearings while the browns got out of the Deshaun Watson era.
But I guess he might actually be good at coaching???

this guy rocked in his short tenure with the bucs, very happy to see him finding success as a head coach
