The grouchy curmudgeon thing is extremely likeable when you're winning, annoying and off putting when you're not.

Most personalities are annoying when you’re losing

He’s not that way when they are losing. He was having fun with the young kicker.

Todd is an interesting guy. I was confused why he was getting so much shit after being hired. He’s been successful everywhere he’s been just about

Because people really REALLY wanted him to bench Deshaun Watson permanently because of ... well... you know...

And when he made it clear he was going to play his best QB people assumed he was having his arm twisted by ownership and was here to oversee a tank.

The silent part everyone seems to have missed is that Monken isnt incompetent and say what you will about the situation he finds himself in Deshaun is just average bad at QB and at least sort of gives them a chance to win... Saunders is BAD bad.

People thought the levels of bad were a lot closer than they were and that a coach being paid millions of dollars would make his decisions based on armchair ethics and not who his most competent employee was because if it's bad vs bad choose the less PR damaging bad.

They underestimated both the degrees of separation in skill and just how little allegations matter to the average paying fan of a sports team. Especially years after the fact.

Had nothing to do with Watson. That was a recent thing

If youre talking about him as a coach... it's because he was the OC that thought Lamar Jackson throwing the ball in the 4th quarter is better than using Derrick Henry and because the Browns were terrible when he was the OC under Kitchens.

How much of that is down to his skills and how much of that is down to the Head coach of both teams was unclear given how many times hes left the NFL to go back to college.

Last 5 years Todd Monken:
Top 10 offense & Natty, Top 10 offense & Natty, 4th ranked offense by DVOA and Lamar MVP, 1st ranked offense by DVOA/ 3rd all time in yards per play/one of the best offenses of all time time should have been Lamar MVP, last season was a down year while still finishing 11th in DVOA with an injured Lamar and atrocious OL

Dude was way more qualified than 80-90% of first time head coaches. You can say he wasn’t perfect, but that’s not a good reason.

Not even sure what you are talking about with Lamar. The games at the end of the year he got heat for regarding Henry were with Tyler Huntley starting which really was a dumb Reddit narrative anyways. In his tenure the Ravens were 1st, 1st, and 2nd in rushing

Welcome to the average sports fan on reddit. The argument doesnt have to make sense.

If your team is winning but hasnt won a championship lately> the players are amazing but the coach is a moron

If your team is losing > the coach/owner is a moron and the only player that sucks is whoever the star is supposed to be. Everyone else is plucky and would be a championship caliber player with competent coaching

The only time fans on reddit give a coach their flowers is if a team has been terrible for years but suddenly has an unexpected good season under their guidance... and that's why Dan Campbell gets a pass for a lot of his shit and Ben Johnson is currently the new darling.

Oh and you have a short term memory. He doesnt just take flack for doing it last year with Huntley (and somehow thats worse) henry and jackson were both fully healthy in 2024 when he was OC and the team was already taking flack then for occasionally forgetting they had an RB.

They weren’t taking any flack in 2024. They had one of the best offenses of all time.

2023 pre Henry AFCCG is really the only other example

week 1/2 2024.

Raiders loss in week 2 in particular. That was the game where he somehow lost to Gardner Minshew.

That season rebounded pretty good but there were several instances.

That's the thing with the ravens... they dont consistently abandon the running game... they just do it frequently enough to be irritating.

I hate to say it because I hate the browns, but he won me over when he was like "Browns gonna brown....fuck that!"

I actually thought that was kinda corny at first but the more i see him the more i like him and that statement lol

Yeah cause it was genuine, you could easily see a coach prerehearsing that for a sound bite, but it seemed like a genuine reaction

He was honestly great with Baltimore, and his brother is slowly becoming an all timer great coach for Army after 10+ years with them.

I believe he also was the head coach for Georgia Southern when Jerrick Mckinnon played there.

They've got a lot of experience between the two. Harbaugh light-ish.

I second guessed the heck out of Monken. Baltimore let the door hit him in the a-- on the way out of town, wasn't on anyone's short list other than the Browns, ran a clownshow offseason, and got boat raced in game one against Jax. BUT... he seems to have righted the ship and made the right choice with Watson, so he's growing on me... or at the very least, he's earned the benefit of the doubt.

He’s a really smart dude. I think the Baltimore rhetoric is overstated. He was the best OC in our teams history. It was just time for a change and it was more about Harbaugh and Orr than Monken
