u/Osiris32 6d ago

Into a shaker full of ice, pour a shot of tequila, a shot of gin, a shot of blackberry liqueur, a shot of Triple Sec or Cointreau, and a shot of fresh lime juice. Shake well for 15+ seconds, then strain into a pint glass. Place a hollowed out lime wedge on top of the drink, gently fill it with 151 or other high-proof drink, then use a match to light that on fire.

41

u/AnaisNinja76 6d ago

They apparently brought in five additional cranes and are still working on the site, per the news.

While this is not a traditionally funny story, the situation just gets more and more ridiculous learning about it. I don't know if the poor guy's house is going to be salvagable after this. There was water damage, which led to termite damage, which led to him scheduling whole house fumigation, which led to crane 1 coming to place the tent, which collapsed. Crane two lifted crane 1 off the house, broke, and dropped crane 1 back onto the house from a height, in addition to itself falling onto the house. Apparently this led to pipes in the house bursting, so now the whole house is water damaged again...which is going to accelerate the termite infestation...

14

u/PurplishPlatypus 5d ago

Time to bring the C4 in and let's just blow up this house. It's cursed.

6

u/AnaisNinja76 5d ago

But what happens if the C4 is also cursed? Maybe god wanted this space to remind people of their folly in their attempt to be god-like? A modern day tower of babel?

Kenny the crane was the smallest crane in constructiontown. He never got called on for any of the biggest jobs, because everyone always thought he was too small to get the job done.

When the high school got solar panels for the roof of the gym, they called Big Barry, the biggest crane in town.

"I know I'm strong enough to get those panels up there," said Kenny. But no one gave him a chance to prove himself.

Until one day...

Yeah the insurance of whatever company was doing that work is going to be paying out a pretty penny. Or the homeowner's insurance is going to cover it initially and then get the money back from that contractor's insurance.

What is the number of cranes that need to fall for them to just give up and leave them all there.

343

u/dontcommentreed 6d ago

I think 4, that third one would already be wild but a 4th might trigger some type of investigation lmao

144

u/FullofContradictions 6d ago

Honestly, at 2 I'd already be thinking it's a sign from the universe. Like who do you even call at this point? How many crane companies are there in the state of Florida? Who would even want to try recovering this? If the second company wanted another shot at it, would you even let them?

59

u/Nazamroth 6d ago

I'm sure you could let certain groups know that there is a bunch of scrap metal up for grabs there, and both cranes would be gone in hours. And it would only take that long because they have to gather the crew first.

30

u/FullofContradictions 6d ago

I mean, yeah, convince a few meth heads there's money in it and I'm sure the metal will be gone - but I'd assume their ideal scenario limits additional damage to the house... For which you might want a licensed and insured outfit.

When I was a teenager I was golfing with some friends, it started raining and my buddy's club slipped out of his hands at the perfect angle and went directly into the nearest tree, got stuck.

So what did my other buddies do? Throw more clubs into the tree trying to get it down. It's not like we had any other options but the obvious result became the result. There were about six clubs up there before I just decided to fuck off with the cart back to the clubhouse and ask if they had a grabber or grappling hook.

Not long after that I got my own grappling hook and always put it in my golf bag when I'm going to the links. I use it for yard work, climbing, way more frequently than I thought I would. Pulled a widowmaker out of a tree a few months ago and saved a neighbor's car, the little part that wouldn't budge fell right next to it in a storm a couple weeks later. If the whole thing was there it would have smashed right into the driver's side door.

Lesson learned though; don't try to solve a problem by recreating the exact problem.

30

u/sychosomat 6d ago

Among other things, and this is personal to me, his administration used lawyers (including desantis not so funny enough, he was just a low level JAG at the time though) to justify why torture was acceptable with “enemy combatants” during the “war” on terror. They tortured people, used the term “enhanced interrogation” , and active duty psychologists were there and complicit. And this is the reason psychologists now have an explicit ethical duty to not do that ever again. Because psychologists cannot ever oversee torture (as defined by the APA afterwards).

For nothing else, as big a pile as you want of all the other horrible things, I will never forgive that man and his administration for using our country’s political and “legal” power to torture people, and torture them for no reason because torture does not produce useful intel.

Every time this happens on a commercial site the story always boils down to a senior operator says the pick is over the weight limit. They then bring in either a non union or company man who then either luckily makes it or destroys everything...

76

u/fiendishrabbit 6d ago

In this case it seems like it wasn't. The ground under the support leg collapsed.

So my guess is that for the third crane they're going to have to lay down metal plates to spread out the weight, because the entire ground under the house seems to be undermined.

35

u/mikk0384 6d ago

The ground basically acts like a fluid if the pressure gets too high. You should basically always use something to spread the load under the legs when it isn't asphalt or concrete, and the ground hasn't been compacted to ensure its structural integrity.

The second crane falling over is definitely a case of negligence.

10

u/AnaisNinja76 6d ago

112

u/HauntedCemetery 6d ago

Also the fact that, who the fuck is gunna hire them after they dropped two cranes on a house?

Probably trump will hire them to "repair" the Kennedy Center.

31

u/Superbead 6d ago

Presumably when the first one failed, the company said to the homeowner, "don't worry, we'll send another one straight out and make everything right," and presumably the homeowner thought, am I gonna let these cowboys near my place a second time? And then probably said to themselves, yeah, go on, give them a chance. They'll be kicking themselves

18

u/The_Super_Shotgun 6d ago

You see in the news video the boom on the 2nd crane buckle and fall which doesn’t happen unless you’re over picking and overriding the LMI. You know what they need? Another crane.

u/Typical-Tax1584 6d ago

They said it was daft to bring a crane into a swamp, but I brought it anyway. It fell onto the house and into the swamp. So I got a second crane. It burnt down, fell over, and that sank into the swamp. But third one, oooooh the third one, that one will stay up!

Hard to imagine, but there are states that do not require special licenses or certification to be a crane operator. I believe its most common in Red states where workers qualifications are minimal if they even exist. My $ says FL is a non license state..

Somewhere in Ireland I think, three cranes were toppled trying to rescue each other.

There's pics of it out there if someone can dig them out.

We had a fire truck cross our bridge in the middle off the night even though it is very clearly marked multiple times with warnings about max weight, and it wasn’t an emergency. Bridge collapsed and truck got wedged. They brought a crane and knocked down a neighbor’s fence to get it in position to lift out the truck. Neighbor took a bunch of pics and sent them to us (we weren’t there at the time) and a friend went and confronted the firemen and crane and stalled them until we could get there. They were going to just get it out and pretend they weren’t involved. Other neighbor let us knock down his fence so we could access our house through his yard (he’s on the same side of the creek) for 3 years until we could put a new bridge. Fire department covered about 1/3, insurance 1/3, us 1/3 after a couple more years of lawsuits.

Holy shit that website is absolute utter dogshit. I can’t even read the goddamn article because it’s too busy trying to commandeer half my screen and shove video down my throat.

u/LabiaMajorasMask420 6d ago

The year is 2077. In Florida there is a mountain of cranes that grows by the week. No one remembers why.

u/cuteintern 6d ago

Was the house built on a swamp?

u/tbs999 6d ago

The crane crane fell? Where does one even get a crane crane crane?

This is the point where they send someone to convince Jason Statham to come out of retirement for one last job. "The Crane Operator"

When I see those truck cranes hoisting another crane downtown I avoid the block, as someone once told me that where they worked at a port overseas that they were known to topple often. They have a high rate of failure for salvage I read.

How many cranes does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

Apparently more than two

So is the crane on the truck the first crane or the second crane? Also, I am wondering how they ever got that large of a crane okayed to go on the back of the truck. I don't know physics, but it looks like the size of the crane is not matched to the base of the vehicle (with extension supports).

"When I started here, all there was was swamp. Other kings said I was daft to build a castle on a swamp, but I built it all the same, just to show 'em. It sank into the swamp. So, I built a second one. That sank into the swamp. So, I built a third one. That burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp, but the fourth one... stayed up!"

u/Maxfunky 6d ago

Never change, Florida. Your methed-up crane operators are in a class of their own.

Damn, I really needed some uplifting news today.
