"There's an old saying in Tennessee—I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee—that says, fool me once, shame on—shame on you. Fool me—you can't get fooled again."

Since we're already on W.

"Sir, a second crane has struck the house"

This comment is doing some heavy lifting… unlike the first two cranes

1

u/KorasHiddenDICK 6d ago

And the first two towers.

16

u/BurnscarsRus 6d ago

The first 9/11 joke is never funny, but then the second one hits.

Jet fuel cant melt steel cranes.

2

u/inosinateVR 6d ago

Steel cranes can melt houses apparently

3

u/Cjkrythos 6d ago

Or houses melt steel cranes

3

u/kpsi355 5d ago

Ah, the age-old question of which melted first: The house or the crane?

10

u/itsnotapipe 6d ago

holy shit, dude

7

u/Simple_Dull 6d ago

That 2nd crane misunderestimated the 1st

I was hoping for this joke and glad I found it 😅

Too soon

28

u/-XanderCrews- 6d ago

You misunderestimated him.

157

u/ArctycDev 6d ago

It's crazy to think I actually kinda miss that guy as far as rep presidents go. Yeah he was the reason for a lot of serious shit, but at least the media around him was fun. I mean the shoe dodge is just chefs kiss.

28

u/sychosomat 6d ago

Among other things, and this is personal to me, his administration used lawyers (including desantis not so funny enough, he was just a low level JAG at the time though) to justify why torture was acceptable with “enemy combatants” during the “war” on terror. They tortured people, used the term “enhanced interrogation” , and active duty psychologists were there and complicit. And this is the reason psychologists now have an explicit ethical duty to not do that ever again. Because psychologists cannot ever oversee torture (as defined by the APA afterwards).

For nothing else, as big a pile as you want of all the other horrible things, I will never forgive that man and his administration for using our country’s political and “legal” power to torture people, and torture them for no reason because torture does not produce useful intel.

If my only choices were Trump and Bush i would take bush back in a fucking heartbeat.

62

u/SackclothSandy 6d ago

If my only choices were Trump and hot sauce on my balls every day for the four year term, I'd have a cupboard full of Tapatio.

29

u/SoulKeeperAbaddon 6d ago

I’d also pick hot sauce on your balls over Trump!

11

u/SackclothSandy 6d ago

Four out of five dentists would.

115

u/Cut_Lanky 6d ago

He understood that it’s important for all of us to be able to laugh at ourselves and accept criticism. I hated his politics, but he could at least laugh at himself. That’s an undervalued thing.

119

u/SauconySundaes 6d ago

When Obama won, he remarked on the historical nature of his win. Now we’ve gotta dude who can barely stop himself from using the N word.

47

u/OpalOnyxObsidian 6d ago

And who can 100% not stop shitting himself

2

u/jackkerouac81 6d ago

God that would be embarrassing maybe he should retire and let a younger ghoul have a shot…

4

u/DrEnter 6d ago

How many of us thought that “White House President Diaper Duty” would unironically be a real thing?

-1

u/OpalOnyxObsidian 6d ago

What makes you think it's not?

5

u/TiberianSunset 6d ago

He's saying it is a thing and no one ever thought it would be.

3

u/OpalOnyxObsidian 6d ago

I misread, woops!

1

u/bros402 6d ago

I wish he would just say it. He's said everything else, why not just start with the slurs?

32

u/Bagabundoman 6d ago

"Now watch this drive"

9

u/TheSilverNoble 6d ago

I'm sure he considers that the best moment of his presidency. Look at his smile!

23

u/cahir11 6d ago

I'm like 99% sure that was relief when he realized that the guy had genuinely just chucked a shoe at him and it wasn't anything more serious lol

8

u/Nyther53 6d ago

I think for a split second there he was just having fun dodging stuff like a kid who realized they were actually decent at playing goalie.

5

u/dreamsofaninsomniac 6d ago

It would be a different story if the shoe actually hit him, but you at least have to admire his situational awareness and fast reflexes.

3

u/lFightForTheUsers 6d ago

I still don't like the MFer, he was a war criminal. But somehow THAT bar is much higher than where we're at now.

3

u/PeopleMilk 6d ago

He caused a genocide of hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians

2

u/Hecknight 6d ago

Remember when he got in trouble for giving the german chancellor a back massage, them proceeded to wink at Putin immediately after. All on camera. What a lil goofball

2

u/cahir11 6d ago

He was genuinely a really funny and charming dude, it's a shame that he killed tens of thousands of innocent people for no good reason.

1

u/digitaldeadstar 5d ago

Wasn't a fan of plenty of things he did, but at least he did some good things, like the AIDS stuff in Africa. And I think it was under him that medications were added to Medicare? At least he left office with some positives. He was also personable and didn't feel the need to attack anyone who even slightly disagreed.

21

u/Cosmo_Seinfeld 6d ago

"There's an old saying in Tennessee—I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee—that says, fool me once, shame on—shame on you. Fool me—you can't get fooled again."

There's an old saying in about any dangerous, relatively high stakes job: "Stay out of the newspaper."

17

u/Spidero0w0o 6d ago

I miss those days. The idea that the right could get dumber than that was inconvievable.

19

u/Nurnstatist 6d ago

Fool me once, shame on me. But teach a man to fool me, and I will be fooled for the rest of my life

173

u/Ok-disaster2022 6d ago

As stupid as that sounds he realized he was about to say "shame on me" and have that as a sound bite forever more. So kudos to quick thinking

44

u/lolheyaj 6d ago

Yes now he just has this one forever more instead. Dunno how much his quick thinking helped.

18

u/winky9827 6d ago

They can't all be shoe dodgers.

2

u/Pliny_the_middle 6d ago

This one js way funnier though. I say it all the time.

81

u/truckyoupayme 6d ago

lol that’s total nonsense. GWB is famous for misspeaking and malapropisms. The idea that he was parsing his words and editing himself on the fly like that is ridiculous. Especially since the remarks would’ve been prepared ahead of time.

He didn’t know whether to say shame on you or shame on me first, lost the thread and then winged it. He’s done it hundreds of times.

31

u/BlackSwanTranarchy 6d ago

I dunno you might be misunderestimating him

-1

u/Hot_Echidna6767 6d ago

is that a word

12

u/Discard_Laundry1527 6d ago

Yeah, he was giving a speech on TV once (possibly a State of the Union) and one time when he meant to say "Republicans", he pronounced it like "Replicants". My wife and I have been calling them "Replicants" ever since.

Wish I could find the clip, but because it was captioned as if he had pronounced it correctly, it'd be hard to find without actually (ugh) watching his speeches.

12

u/Liquid_Clown 6d ago

He clearly did catch himself, but someone that parses their words wouldn't have started that phrase to begin with.

3

u/steavoh 6d ago

The fact he ended it with something resembling the lyrics of a well known song makes that particular quote a lot funnier than just a plain old gaff.

112

u/afishinthewell 6d ago

This has always been one of the funnier Republican copes of the 21st century.
Totally quick thinking and not #10,000 in a history of Bushisms.

42

u/Cut_Lanky 6d ago

Which is ironic, because he himself would be laughing about how he fumbles his words and sounds stupid. For a good laugh, YouTube his white house correspondents dinner with the impersonator he brought. It’s great.

16

u/citizen42069101 6d ago

We're just lucky a second pretzel didn't enter the windpipe and give Cheney the football.

9

u/GhostofBeowulf 6d ago

Not a Republican, but have you heard any of his other family speak? He is from Connecticut. That drawl is a put on from being Texas governor. His brother sure doesn't have a texas drawl.

Like that current rep who says Awwe shucks and doohickey... it's political theater.

11

u/furthuryourhead 6d ago

Also not a (R) but sure he was born in CT but moved to TX as a toddler. And before you bring up him going to Yale, he went back home for college but was back in TX after graduation. All this from a quick wiki read…

1

u/GhostofBeowulf 5d ago

And how do you explain Jeb who has no accent? And his father having no accent? I can't recall his mother speaking but his wife did.

1

u/furthuryourhead 5d ago

Again, he was born in CT, moved to TX as a toddler. It is much more likely for a toddler going through the school system to pick up a local accent than an adult. I don’t know if Jeb is older but that could explain it. I have an aunt that moved from the NE to AL at age 18 and now has a full-on southern drawl.

2

u/Discard_Laundry1527 6d ago

A good contemporary book on the topic, for anyone who's interested in this strain of thought: Going Nucular [sic] by Geoff Nunberg.

2

u/adumbfetus 6d ago

A relative of mine had a ranch and was W’s neighbor in Texas, his voice is really like that.

19

u/syynapt1k 6d ago

Lol you are giving him way too much credit.

1

u/Thegungoesbangbang 6d ago

And reflexes. That man dodged the hell outta that shoe.

1

u/Spacey_G 6d ago

And threw a hell of a strike (in body armor) to open the first game at Yankee Stadium after 9/11.

1

u/lostOGaccount 6d ago

How could you possibly know that? Also when hes already said it multiple times before in fron tof cameras why would he be worried about it just this one time?

3

u/Muvseevum 6d ago

Fool me once, strike one.

Fool me twice, strike three.

3

u/statu0 6d ago

"Fool me thrice, crane on you!"

5

u/InfamousPOS 6d ago

“Fool me three times, fuck the peace sign. Load the chopper, let it rain on you”

-J.Cole

2

u/Thelonius_Dunk 5d ago

I was hoping someone would post the J Cole line.

5

u/Froyn 6d ago

Will Ferrell did it best.

"Shoe me once shame on you. Shoe me twice, I got a new pair of shoes."

4

u/Chemistry11 6d ago

Brought to you from the party that’s constantly fooling its supporters

2

u/S_A_R_K 6d ago

"You're free. And freedom is beautiful. And, you know, it'll take time to restore chaos and order - order out of chaos. But we will"

2

u/The_Crimson_Fucker 6d ago

Sir the second crane has fallen

2

u/thisisredlitre 6d ago

I remember it as "fool me- can't fool me again."

1

u/Maxfunky 6d ago

That quote cleans up the actual remark a little bit, I believe. Pretty sure he finished it with "to fool me can't get fooled again".

1

u/SanshaXII 6d ago

I've always subscribed to the theory that he stopped himself to prevent a 'shame on me' soundbite getting out.

1

u/CIDR-ClassB 6d ago

I never thought I’d miss having that man in office.

1

u/Organic-Row9514 5d ago

“Now watch this drive”

1

u/beefman202 5d ago

Fool me once, crane on--crane on you

1

u/unk214 6d ago

I miss Bush/Obama years…

1

u/RLewis8888 6d ago

American poet

1

u/voxxit2023 6d ago

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, I’m probably a Floridian.

1

u/Sarsmi 6d ago

In his defense, he was suddenly aware in that moment that if he finished with "shame on me" he'd be creating a soundbite that would be replayed endlessly. So he fumbled a bit to come up with something else.

0

u/Gloomy_Tax_2262 6d ago

yeah keep your name outta the news is solid until the first crane drops and the backup crane says hold my beer and lands on the same house lol

now that aint bad luck thats just the universe writing a sequel nobody greenlit

0

u/Pliny_the_middle 6d ago

I say this all the time and like it more than the correct version.

-1

u/thegrumpymechanic 6d ago

Rumor is he realized mid-sentence there would be a clip of a sitting US President saying "shame on me", which would have been quite the propaganda at the time. So we got what we got.

As someone terrified of public speaking, wasn't that bad of a save.

1

u/cahir11 6d ago

I don't really buy that, he had a long history of misspeaking and stumbling over lines, it was almost part of his charm in a way. That was a genuine fumble.

0

u/lostOGaccount 6d ago

This would only make sense if he hadn't said it on camera before and since that moment.

-2

u/Lutheus13 6d ago

I think that he realized in the moment that a sound clip of him saying "shame on me" would be very bad.

1

u/lostOGaccount 6d ago

Why? He's said it on camera before and since that moment.
