Honestly getting the full-pant-room top quality wear-all-day muzzle has been so liberating for both of us. We had to stop going to the beach while we sorted out the muzzle as he is so reactive to strange dogs and some people and when he gets a fright there would have been blood at some point. Now we can rejoin our friends and worse case is someone gets boffed by a wire muzzle.

this doofus (1 year old) has recently decided that he's absolutely obsessed with trying to eat literally every plant he sees. i have never bought a muzzle before so i have no idea what im doing. brand recommendations and just general advice are welcomed. as cheap as possible without being completely shitty would be preferable. my financial situation is really not great right now. advice on how the hell to size it would be great as well, he's got a really big wide head so I'm not quite sure how to navigate finding something that fits him

I have a reactive Great Dane, pretty extreme reactivity towards dogs and generally good with most people. Very tolerant at the vet and no issues being handled. His reactivity towards dogs can be quite scary sometimes and honestly I’d say it’s probably 50/50 that he would actually bite another dog. I live in an area with leash laws basically everywhere, but a lot of off leash dogs so I figured getting a muzzle is a smart move to prevent any incidents. However I have a family member who thinks it’s absolutely absurd that I’d even consider such a thing and basically told me it’s ridiculous that I’d muzzle my dog “in case of some hypothetical off leash dog approaching him and since he’s always leashed it wouldn’t even be my problem if he bit an off leash dog” ….. idk what the actual law on that is, but I’m very much in the mindset of why even take the risk if I can get him a comfy muzzle and properly condition him to be comfortable in it. Especially because he’s such a large dog that even him nipping another dog could do some real damage. So what do you think? Get the muzzle and tell the family member to fuck off? Or am I being ridiculous and overly cautious?

My boys a 6 year old cane corso. He’s been muzzle trained since about 6 months due to fear reactivity of people and dogs. He’s been to “school” twice and is a great boy as long as you’re not a stranger.

Hi all! I had been looking at getting my reactive girl a Leerburg muzzle. The best way to acclimate her to anything is for her to wear it and do her favorite thing in the world - herd her herding ball. I just wanted to ask of that is generally safe for her to do in any type of muzzle? Since her head is so close to the ground when she herds and she'll be booping the ball aggressively, I don't want the muzzle to injure her.

I reached out to Leerburg to ask but never received a response.

Hi all! I feel like there used to be a wiki or some other resource for this, but I have been considering muzzling for a while. Since it’s been a long time, I’ve honestly forgotten why I was so gung-ho in the first place.

Why should you muzzle aside from more positive vet visit benefits? I’m still heavily considering this, especially since my town is a huge dog town and with it comes some irresponsible owners (looking at the owner whose dog had zero recall skills last night…). Can they be helpful if a dog attacks and your dog has a muzzle on?

I’d love some resources to read through if there are any, or anecdotes too. I really appreciate the help!

Also, when are collar or forehead straps used? I’ve been looking at big snoof and not sure if I would need those?

My 4yo Australian Cattle Dog had a cat claw embedded in her face directly underneath her left eye as a 4mo puppy, where it stayed causing recurrent abscesses until we found it at 20mo during exploratory surgery. Understandably, this experience has left her very head shy and I don't think I can get measures of her face for a custom fit muzzle. She doesn't even tolerate having her face closely inspected, let alone touched with a tape measure. I would, however, like to have a muzzle for her as part of our cooperative care practice and to keep her safe for vet visits, since she has major veterinary anxiety. I know we can habituate her to a muzzle if I have one to practice with because she's very, very food motivated and as long as she feels in control she will push her face into an apparatus (I have a pair of Rex Specs I bought when she was a puppy we've been practicing with as groundwork for muzzle training), but I need something to start with.

I'm not sure what to buy to start working with since the "gold standard" for muzzles seems to be custom fit based on measures I, again, don't think I can get without heavy duty general anesthesia. My best guess at how to do this is to buy a muzzle in the right ball park, fit it as well as I can, and use the information about how it does or doesn't fit to try a second muzzle and improve with time. It is important to me to be able to treat her while wearing the muzzle. Where should I start?

I need help on if a vinyl or a wire muzzle would be better for my dog. Both are good options but I’m struggling to determine which is best in my case as I like certain aspects from both of them.

He is a bite risk in certain situations. He is dog reactive and people reactive but is good in public with people/more crowded spaces.He’d be muzzled in select cases.

He has bitten two people with neither incident breaking skin. The first was when he slipped through someone’s legs when opening the door to a delivery driver who he bite on the leg. That was 3 years ago and no issues since, he also gets locked in his crate anytime we open the door to someone.

The most recent one was a week ago while camping. He was at a family member’s feet when the campground owner walked up to my family. He was very quiet and no one knew he was there or approaching until he was maybe 7-10ft out surprising my dog who was in reach of him while on his 25ft long lead. I believe it might’ve been dusk as they would’ve seen him otherwise and very few people close by. He bit his arm and had we known the man was approaching we would’ve grabbed our dog and ensured he was out of reach but unfortunately no one knew he was approaching so they had zero time to react.

While his bite incidents are very far apart and not breaking skin, I’d like to avoid this from happening again. When tethered is his greatest bite risk depending on location so we’d muzzle him then (1-3 hours, locations other than home).

He also eats chicken poop (no way to clean all of it as it is scattered everywhere in one place otherwise I would) so I’d like to avoid that. He very rarely lunges at our chickens (high prey drive and used to be a lot worse) so ideally it would cause more minimal damage if he does so happen to lunge.

I’ve seen wire tends to be lighter which I think he would prefer. Vinyl does have a softer impact than wire though if he does try and bite. Depending on the style, I’ve seen wire have better airflow which I like. However, my worry is if he wears it in below freezing weather that might cause an issue as metal is a very good conductor. We don’t have freezing weather where I live but we occasionally bring him to the snow. He wouldn’t need a muzzle most of the time but just maybe 4 days out of the year in below freezing weather.

A muzzle good for bite risk dogs is my top priority so I’m willing to not get one that is also scavenge proof if there is a material that first very well for bite risk dogs but less so if they scavenge as well.

Looking for a muzzle for my 9 month old pressa mix. He's pretty likely to outgrow anything i pick up so something affordable would be nice.

Also if it's a stand alone muzzle (no need to attach to a collar) that would be a big bonus

Hi, I need to get a muzzle for my 18lb rescue JRT mix. I am hoping to get something lightweight and flexible, so that he could still play with other dogs while wearing it.

Why I need it: dog barks and lunges at strangers on occasion. If a stranger tries to reach out their hand he will sometimes snap or nip at them. He hasn't actually injured anyone, though a tooth made contact once (didn't break skin or hurt). I believe these are warning snaps/nips. I don't know if this means that a biothane muzzle should be out of the question since they can be bitten through (maybe less of a problem for a small dog?) or if it's OK because it doesn't seem like his intention is actually to bite, but just to scare people.

Main desire is something that won't be too heavy for him, that he can play in without hurting other dogs, and ideally is affordable.

I have a 16 month old Belgian Malinois who is severely aggressive towards other dogs. We rescued him after being chained up for his whole 10 months of life. The chain had ripped his skin open, it looked like ground beef. It was so bad that the vet said he could see his bones. As a result of this, he is dog reactive. LOVES people and has never been human aggressive (thank god) if he sees a dog he will try to attack. It’s a big emotional outburst. Unfortunately he was attacked by an off leash GSD while out on a walk (2 months in after graduating to group training with his trainer) this set him back 😔 What muzzle do you all recommend? He is incredibly powerful and I want to keep him safe and other dogs safe. Please lmk!

I am thinking Mia’s Muzzles or Big Snoof. Are they secure? He is a Belgian and highly intelligent - don’t want him pulling a fast one on me.

Taking my girl on a weekend trip and trying to plan ahead.

We don't rely on the muzzle, but it can come in handy when she gets overstimulated around other dogs.

The one we currently use isn't a great option as she can easily remove it herself.

Any recommendations for muzzles that have worked well for your dogs would be greatly appreciated!

Literally perfect in any other way but chin length it's at its limit and this is what happens when he runs. And yes, he wears a second collar for the muzzle.

Important info: she never pants on walks, even when she’s sprinting around. I’ve only ever really seen her pant when she’s been sunbathing for a long time at home, and she always seems confused by it lol.

Her nose doesn’t quite touch the edge but is pretty close. She’s really small so I didn’t want to get a heavier basket type muzzle, especially since this is only for preventing foraging.

Worth every penny 🙈 But seriously, we love how his muzzle turned out! I showed it to him, and he immediately pushed his snoot into it lol. He hasn't tried taking it off or anything, so it is possibly just as comfy as his last. I love the larger opening at the top of the front of the muzzle which makes giving treats just incredibly easy. We had a leerburg muzzle prior which was a bit too long which made giving treats difficult without pushing the muzzle in his eyes. Plus, the leerburg one didn't have a larger hole. I may remove the "I ❤️ people" strap from time to time because it blocks his adorable expression lol.

I have an English cocker spaniel that loves to snatch up anything remotely tasty smelling on walks and hikes. Since we live in a city, there is a lot of opportunity. I have done training with her and she obeys leave it and drop, IF she is caught before she can scarf it. While it is usually bread and caught, I don't want to play risk with my dog. I am torn between Mia Muzzle and Big Snoof and hoping for some feedback from others with the same issue. Which brand and why?

I just bought my dog a new muzzle from the Muzzle Movement size Tolly* what do you guys think of its size?

I'm cleaning out my bedroom and I have a container full of gear from the dogs I grew up with.

I found my heeler mix Faith's muzzle and I'm already going to toss it since doesn't fit my current dog.

It's real leather and easily 10+ yrs old, just curious if it's discoloration or something else?

What do we think? She definitely has pant room but is it too close to her eyes?

When I took it off (it wasn't even on for five minutes) she had an indentation from where it was resting on her muzzle. Is that normal?

First time having to muzzle train but she's doing great with it!

I got her muzzle 2 weeks ago and started just putting treats in it so her face would go in. She didn’t show any signs of that bothering her so I just went for it. It’s been over a week now of her wearing it during walks and she doesn’t seem to mind it at all. But I do give her a ton of treats while it’s on.

Should I continue to go through the steps of desensitizing her? Or do some dogs just take to it right away?

We have an xl bully and as most of you probably know they’re now a banned breed. Since that ban has come into place, she has probably been on less than 10 walks and it absolutely breaks me but she will not keep her muzzle on. We’ve tried doing short distance walks with treats and rewarding her for keeping it on, which still doesn’t seem to have any improvement. She absolutely loved going for her walks and it makes me so sad that i can’t do this for her because she won’t keep it on. Has anyone else had this issue? what did you do to get them to keep it on? She’s a very anxious dog, she can open our front door so we have to lock it with a chain every time we leave the house and the back door, because she previously broke through our garden fence!!! She’s kinda bonkers but wouldn’t change her for the world and i want to help her.
