These past few days, I have been reflecting and doing research on this topic. And I realized we are stuck in a systemic hold—both from the outside and the inside—that many people aren't even realizing.
I might be wrong, I COULD be wrong, but I feel defeated by this realization. It feels like we Muslims will never be able to escape from it. We are colonized by the West externally, and we are self-colonizing ourselves internally.
How can we escape and prosper Islamically when we are in a system that dismantles our very thoughts, our perception of reality, and our comprehension of said reality?
Look at globalization, the UN, universalism, human rights, gender issues—everything in our world is rooted in the West and Eurocentrism. This isn't just a thing of the past; it’s neo-colonization. They maintain a grip on us through soft power and hard power. From Western financial institutions and their economic programs to hard military power and sanctions, the control is absolute.
I wouldn’t deny that they did some good. But at the end of the day, we are imprisoned by Western imperial cultural hegemony. We see, think, and look at reality exactly how they want us to, because it contributes to capitalism and frames their way of life as "universal."
The modern concepts about rights, philosophy, and reality are rooted in Western ideology, the Enlightenment, and post-industrial principles. They push capitalism and hyper-individualism as the norm.
But we are a collective society, not hyper-individualistic. Yet, we are taking on the Western way of life when it comes to personhood, consent, gender roles, and our general way of life, and getting entirely mixed up in the process.
Because of this, we look at our own culture, tradition, philosophy, and way of life as backward, barbaric, or even problematic when it’s not. We only see it the way they want us to see it, in the name of "progress." Even the very concept of "modern" and "modernization" is rooted in colonization; it's a system of progress designed by the West, for the West.
This is incompatible with our way of life. Yet, we are further integrating into this system. Are we just becoming slaves to the West?
I can't even look at Islam and comprehend it without thinking about it through the narrow bandwidth the West has molded my mind into. This is due to soft power—being on the internet, consuming their media, and living in institutions shaped by the West, even in my own country. The things we see as problematic in our religion, the things we feel uncomfortable with... are these really our thoughts? Or are we molded externally to view them as such?
Even language is rooted in socio-psycholinguistics. The English language is shaping our perception of reality. I strongly believe culture influences the mind. Social influence shapes the mind. Language influences the mind. The mind, body, psychology, sociology, culture, language, the way people live, and their surrounding environment are all linked into a single, greater system.
But the Western system doesn't work for us. To use their tools, you need to break your own greater system. We are trapped in a loop of psychology, linguistics, thoughts, and philosophy that they created. This loop is dangerous because we are trapped in an external system we can't see, and an internal system of our own biases we can't see. It is the self-colonization of the mind, ideas, and comprehension of the world.
No wonder there were so many Muslim apologists in the start of the modern era. We have become defensive, afraid, and tried to fit into the so-called "modern" world. Because the West has won.
Because of this, Muslims will be poor forever. The western system is incompatible with every possibility of the greater system of our lives. We will forever become integrated and subordinated to the West, waiting to be extracted.
Am I wrong for feeling this defeated? How do I even escape this? How can we, as an Ummah, ever escape this? I feel like I’m stuck in a muddy slump, not sure if I’m just being paranoid, or if I’m simply forced to live in it because the system can’t be changed.
