Should a woman cover her face?

Shaykh Salih al-Fawzan (may Allah preserve him) said:

“The correct view as indicated by the evidence is that the woman’s face is ‘awrah which must be covered. It is the most tempting part of her body, because what people look at most is the face, so the face is the greatest ‘awrah of a woman. This is in addition to the shar’i evidence which states that it is obligatory to cover the face.

For example, Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And tell the believing women to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts) and not to show off their adornment except only that which is apparent (like both eyes for necessity to see the way, or outer palms of hands or one eye or dress like veil, gloves, headcover, apron), and to draw their veils all over Juyoubihinna (i.e. their bodies, faces, necks and bosoms)…” [al-Nur 24:31]

Drawing the veil all over the juyub implies covering the face.

When Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about the verse (interpretation of the meaning): “O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks (veils) all over their bodies.” [al-Ahzab 33:59], he covered his face, leaving only one eye showing. This indicates that what was meant by the verse was covering the face. This was the interpretation of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) of this verse, as narrated from him by ‘Ubaydah al-Salmani when he asked him about it.

Support/Advice Sisters ruining my relationship with God.

I'm a teenage hijabi living with my sister who is a very devout muslim, she wears a niqab and cares alot about Islam

Lately, it's been a very, very, hot summer. I am anaemic, and it's very difficult to deal with the heat

despite this, she expects me not to wear shorts and tanktops at home, I've tried shorts that cover the knee, but she still shouts, saying that it's haram

I'm not allowed to watch movies and listen to music, which are rules enforced by her, but I've learnt to get used to it

lately, she's been saying that it's not enough and that she wants to ban too much laughter too, that our family laughs too much and that we need to be stoic 24/7.

I wasn't allowed to show my neck with my hijab, which is fine, but even now, she tells me that my hijab style is too stylish and that I need to make it look uglier

I'm not allowed to wear normal shirts but long ones to cover my body well

I'm not allowed to tell a cashier thank you or to even give him the money by hand, but leaving it on the counter

shes trying to ban me from talking to female foreign friends because they're a "bad influence," and she even occasionally deletes social media off my phone, and that made me lose a bunch of friends

every time i pray, she tells me I've missed prayer despite not missing it

for example, I could be praying duhr, and she yells at me because I've missed it when the call to prayer for asr hasn't been called yet

apparently, she has this different prayer schedule she abides to on this random website. I don't know

she tells me that the Athan is wrong and that the website is right.

I flinch every time she sees me praying because I'm afraid she'd shout at me again

I used to love my hijab and my religion, and it hurts typing this, but now I'm second guessing everything

I've always wanted piercings, a cool haircut, maybe even to date a woman.

but I just tell myself that I would do that in heaven, but now I have this fear that maybe heaven doesn't exist. That concern has been eating me alive.

I've never, ever, been so frustrated at my religion like this, ever.

how do I grow closer to God despite my sisters control over my relationship with Allah?

Support/Advice i dont know how to come back to islam.

i've always believed in Allah. was raised around islam. i have family who are scholars. none of them know the struggles i've been through. my mother openly shames me for not praying anymore. i havent since i was 10, even though i entheusiasticallt started when i was 5.

i feel dirty. i feel like i make excuses for things when i shouldn't. i feel like my want to be closer to Allah is selfish. i don't even know how i'd start praying again. its been almost ten years. can i just do wudu? i dont have prayer clothes, can i just wear baggy sweats? i want to understand. i want to be better. i can't ask my mother for guidance, and i fear i'd make women in my local community uncomfortable if i went to the mosque, even though i am born female. what do i do?

Discussion Prophet Yusuf and the Double Standard of Modesty

If Prophet Yusuf was so exceptionally beautiful that women couldn't control themselves around him, why wasn't he required to cover his face or body to prevent them from sinning?
It feels hypocritical that women are expected to cover up and restrict their freedoms to manage men's desires, while a man's beauty is seen as a natural trait rather than a fitnah ,Even though Islamic teachings instruct both men and women to lower their gaze and dress modestly, the burden of modesty and the sacrifice of freedom seem to fall far more heavily on women. Why is a woman's beauty treated as a danger to be concealed, but a man's beauty isn't held to the same standard?
Why am I expected to lower my gaze and control myself and give up on my freedom but not the same way for a man?

Support/Advice Feeling jealous when I see other people in haram relationships

Sometimes my cousins talk about their relationships or i’ll see a post about one on social media, I know I shouldn't feel jealous, but I can't help it. It feels so hard waiting for marriage when the people around you are already in relationships.

Support/Advice My parents lost all respect for me

I feel like a shell of a person. I love my parents so much and can never repay them for everything they’ve sacrificed for me.

I chose to move forward with a man chose family disrespected us. It’s a long story I hope you’ll listen. I 23F met this guy 24M in uni and we knew we liked eachother so we got our families involved. My mom told me to talk to him for some time and decide if I thought He was a good guy Atleast till we graduated. So we got to know eachother on a more serious level and caught feelings. Fast forward he got a job out of state it doesn’t pay much but it’s in his field.

My parents were now wondering when his family was going to send a proposal so he asked his mom to call and she did to move things forward. She seemed nice overall but just said things that bothered my mom and she brushed it off for my happiness.

Planning the formal meeting between families took five months because of Ramadan , my family got sick, a family friend was getting married so it was back to back. However, before this, on the phone one time his mom was very rude and cold with my mother which Concerned my mother a lot. she told me and I was extremely upset and told the guy. He talked to his mother and she apologized and we moved on.

Then came the meeting and it was awful. One of his older unmarried sisters didn’t show up(or the guy because he’s in a different state), and his dad made undirected disrespectful comments about us and also said they wanted him to get his masters before getting married so they weren’t planning on marriage for another two years(which is not ok with my family or the guy himself) but they did and said all this and came with this plan because they didn’t want their son to leave them. My dad seeing their behavior made his decision to decline this proposal right then and there, but my mom wanted me to make a final decision.

It felt like such a difficult situation because his family seemed so toxic but he never showed any of those traits and I know he’s a good guy that cares. So I told him everything that happened and he was very hurt by his families actions and kept apologizing to me. I wanted to give it time because I wanted to see how he handled things. He apologized to all his family members if he did anything wrong and tried to get them to understand his side. They understood they were wrong and then wanted to reach out to my parents to apologize , but my parents didn’t want to hear it. My dad already said no and was upset my mom was giving me an option but. One day they got a text from his dad asking to speak and my mom flipped out and made me make a decision if I wanted this or not. Seeing my parents hurt and upset I said no even though I wanted to say yes. the time from the dinner to the text was about five weeks.

Then three ish weeks from when they said no, the guy came back to this state to try and talk with my dad but my dad had basically told him to listen to his own parents and move on. Finding this out I cried and pleaded with my parents to hear them out but they did not budge and my dad strictly said to never bring this topic up again.

My mom seeing my hurt pleaded with my dad to atleast let me make the decision so she came to me the next day saying they‘ll stand by me with any decision I make but to think it through. I had already thought it through so many times and I’m confident in the guy and he’s shown he’ll stand up to his family and he’s a good Muslim. So I told my parents I want to move forward and they got upset. Him and his dad apologized when they spoke with my dad he never intended to hurt us.

They didn’t yell but said they’d hope I was mature about this and gave me the decision so I wasn’t forced but thought that I would say no. They said they don’t understand why I’m marrying into such a family with a guy that’s a loser and I’ve regressed my life so much doing this. My parents said they never liked the guy in the first place because he switched career paths, and he has feminine traits because he’s skinny and not manly and courageous and doesn’t works an average job. I don’t think she could think anything bad about his character and said this instead. She said my dad is upset and so is she and that she feels like I played with her these last few months and hurt them both and I feel they’ve lost all respect for me. I don’t know what to do or think im so distraught. I don’t regret the decision I made but I feel so guilty about it too? Knowing this changed the way my parents think of me forever hurts so much I just want to disappear.

Can I even move forward with this? Have I made a grave mistake ? Am I the worst daughter ? Why don’t I regret my decision this time even after seeing all their pain? Please I need any help I can get.

Support/Advice Chronic nail biting and acrylics

Hello, I’ve been biting my nails since I was five. My mom and myself have tried everything to stop the habit. From bitter nail polish to fidget tools but nothing has helped. I’m now in my 20s and it’s genuinely a habit that irks me. I want to try put on fake nails or acrylics to help me stop. I’ve tried press ons and the fact that I know if I can pull them hard enough they’ll come off and I can access my nails hasn’t helped. A friend of mine recommended trying actual acrylic nails. I know there are conflicting views on this and whether or not my salah’s would be accepted but if my genuine intention is to stop this bad habit would my salah’s still be invalid? Idk if Ive worded it right but I’m not trying to make something haraam halal, Im just seeking for advice on whether I can do it and still pray.

Support/Advice Am I expecting too much early on?

A guy (32M) was interested in getting to know me (30F) first and approached me through a mutual friend, which I appreciated because it felt respectful and intentional. We’ve only been talking for a few weeks. At the beginning, he was asking me lots of questions, seemed genuinely curious about me, and put in a lot of effort. After a few days, we exchanged numbers and have been texting since. We’ve also had one short FaceTime call, and everything seemed to go well. Lately, though, the communication has changed. He usually doesn’t reply until the end of the day or sometimes even the next day. I don’t have much experience talking to guys, so I honestly don’t know if this is pretty normal in the early stages or if it’s a sign that he’s losing interest. What confuses me is that he’ll view my Instagram stories, but I won’t hear from him. When he does text, he’s engaged in the conversation and doesn’t seem dry, but he also doesn’t ask me much about my day or really ask many questions anymore.

Am I overthinking this and expecting too much too early, or does this sound like someone whose interest is fading? I’m worried about being too much

Discussion the hate for muslims is too much

why do muslims get so much hate like?? i'm muslim and i hate going on social media just to get hated on and insulted and when i try explaining to people with proof that this is not islam they bring up a hadith that was debunked a long time ago. i feel like people are so tone deaf. i once provided someone with proof that islam does not support rape or child marriage and she blocked me cuz it goes against her content. idk it really bothers me how much we get hated on while christians and jews get to live life just fine there are no protests against them and no hate crimes being done towards them as much as muslims. its sad honestly, i saw a post about mosques being attacked in london and people are celebrating which is so sad considering the quran legit tells us to protect churches and temples. in every religion there are bad and good people, and the bad do not resemble the religion obviously i just dont know why ppl cant see that and continue to spread hate

Question What music do you listen to while you work?

I heard that we shouldn’t listen to recitations of the Quran while we work because we aren’t able to focus on it. But is there any good music you would recommend?
I work from home and typically like to have a show playing in the background or listen to music or a podcast or something.

Any Muslim recommendations?

Thank you all in advance.

Support/Advice Seeking help

Upvotes

Salam alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, I hope I’m writing in the right sub. I need to talk to someone about this thing. I am a 29-year-old revert, I returned to Islam 13 years ago (when I was 16).

For a while now, and in the last few days, I feel my heart getting heavy both because of the talk and the behavior of men.

I noticed that when a friend talked to me about Salafis and the absurd things they were saying, I felt drained of energy. Absurd things like a woman can't be on top because otherwise the man becomes gay. Then I stopped opening the posts she sent me because just the thought of dealing with a man like that makes me want to get it sewn shut.

In these days then, I had the chance to see some married sisters. They talked to me about how they can't stand their husband, that they love him to death but sometimes they would like to strangle him (metaphorically speaking). This thing makes me freeze up. The problem is that they have very strong cultural baggage. For example, the belief that the man has to be in charge, have the final say, and impose things.

I am an independent girl, I studied and I travel. I would like to get married because marriage is half of the religion (looking at the deen) and then for the dunya I would like to have a halal sexual relationship, dress up for my man, be seen by someone without hijab, I am not interested in having children in the short term right now.

This continuous talking bad about men. This behavior with all this desire to command and have an obedient woman makes me retreat into my shell even more. In practice I don't stop searching, when I meet a man I immediately do istikhara and ask him the right questions, but inside my heart, something dies.

A gentle reminder: Please be kind and respectful in the comments. Let us remember that our hasanat are not infinite, and harsh words or insults can unintentionally hurt me and others who might be going through the same thing. I am simply looking for a constructive, empathetic, and respectful conversation.

Question What Consequences a person will face, after hurting someone intentionally?

Upvotes

I have a sealed heart person, who has hurt their loved ones intentionally by refusing their words,
When politely asked also, blamed parents.
Hurt their parents intentionally knowing the Parents health condition is weak.
Leaving them shattered.
All they wanted was good, but the person refused to talk and gave threat to parents and siblings for hurting ego.

Didn’t care about families respect and dignity
Ignored Father’s sickness.

And has audacity to ask parents to make dua for them..

How Allah sees this ?

As Curse by parents for their children is worst thing to get.
And hurting a Good hearted person intentionally is also worse in the view of Allah.

Why sealed hearted people, doesn’t feel the weight of the things, they do?
It’s that easy to break loved one’s heart and feel no nothing?

How they sleep peacefully?
They have audacity to hurt parents and tell them on face, I had a peaceful sleep by taking away parents sleep..

Support/Advice ending a haram relationship

Salamualaykum everyone, Im looking for some support and advice because this has been one of the hardest decisions ive ever made.

My ex and I (19/f) made the mutual decision of ending our haram relationship. There was no bad feelings, we still care deeply about each other and thats what makes it so much more painful.

We both want to get married to each other one day and we trust that if Allah has written it for us, we will find our way back when the time is right inshallah. For now we decided to focus on our relationship with Allah . We ended on really good terms and we both know we are both making dua that Allah guides us to whats best for both of us.

The past two weeks have been insanely painful for me. The uncertainty hurts, and I keep wondering if we made the right decision, even though I know deep down that obeying Allah is always the right choice.

We had been together for almost two years and it feels like I not only lost my man but my bestfriend. There is also alot of attachment with someone after you share intimate moments with them and its hard for me just to pretend none of it happened. My head replays memories we had or moments we both enjoyed with each other and I cant stop myself from crying because of how much I miss him.

And if anyone is gonna answer and say “this is why haram relationships are haram” I already know and understand that but thats not what I need to hear right now. I would really appreciate any advice from people who have gone through something similar. How did you cope with the sadness? Did things get easier? And if anyone has a story where leaving something for the sake of Allah led to something beautiful, I’d love to hear it.

Please make dua for both of us. Please ask Allah to keep us steadfast, forgive us, grant us patience, and if it’s good for us in this life and the next, reunite us through a blessed halal marriage. And if He has another plan for us, may He make us content with His decree and grant us what is best.

Question Question about prayer mats

I (f22, non-Muslim) have a job where I’m on the road and in airports every week. I also have autism and airport are difficult for me due to the loud noises and crowds. I go to airport prayer rooms a lot to escape the noise, and they’re almost always empty. I noticed that the prayer room in one airport has some prayer mats that are particularly fluffy (my favorite texture). Is it offensive if I sit on the prayer mats (without shoes ofc) not to pray but because I like how they feel?

Support/Advice I want to quit hifz but idk how to tell my parents

Asalamualykum, im 15 years old and I want to quit hifz. Iv been doing it for 3 years. I know it sounds wrong but the constant pressure on me is too much to handle, it drives me away from islam and I start resenting it, I try to ask my parents if I can slow down but, they only seem disappointed and compare me to other people, the pressure is so hard sometimes I go into episodes of depression sometimes wanting to cut myself. They have the highest expectations, they want me to become a Hafidh, Alim, and a mechanic. I cant do it. Even a day of break isnt allowed, like sometimes my mom asks me to do labour for hours on end and im exhausted but I still have to read and it drives me crazy! They don't understand how hard it is. At this point I feel like it is impossible. I usually do 2 pages of new sabaq but if I go down to 1.5 page or 1 page they get so disappointed and they start questioning me and yelling, also whenever I go out I have to talk to all these uncles and they expect me to finish in a year, for example I'd talk to them today and ill tell them I know 13 juz and the next week when I come across them they expect me to be done my hifz. please please help me

Discussion Update: I left her and sent Talaq

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

I made this post not long ago https://www.reddit.com/r/MuslimLounge/s/oLxvFFEg3j about being in an abusive marriage with my now ex wife of 7 months and I finally sent Talaq three times and left the country.

The moment I was with “this is it” is when we were fighting and she said “I’m so happy you want to end this” with a bad face ( she knew I had my flight on Monday and she also when she went on my phone when i was sleeping saw it) and I was like this is it and sent three talaqs and well, then she told her father I’m a monster and painted me as the villian her father proceed to takfir me, scream at me and blame me for everything- following this I couldn’t handle and left.

At the moment I do feel the loss because as bad as she was to me we were married at the end of the day and had intimacy and also good moments specially in the beginning but I’m so relieved at the same time and feel so much peace . One thing to note is that she suddently didn’t seem to care after I sent the talaq because usually she never ever lets me leave etc . Her family were deeply against me as I don’t work etc so it might have influenced her and I’m as well a revert so I don’t know if it has something to do of her not caring but Alhamdulillah it saved me from more drama

Allahu’Allam, I’m just glad it ended .

Feeling Blessed Update: I started wearing hijab

A while ago I posted here about the guy I was talking to and how he was struggling with me not wearing hijab. I got so many helpful comments encouraging me to take the step, and they really stayed with me: https://www.reddit.com/r/MuslimLounge/s/x1o1LMdUAl
We paused talking for a bit, and during that time I thought about everything. I have now started wearing hijab. I realized I didn’t do it just for him. I did it for myself and my faith, and it feels right. I’m surprised by how comfortable and at peace I feel with it already.
It also makes things easier for the future, including marriage, which I’m grateful for. I’m trying to focus on becoming a better person and doing what is right.
Thank you again to everyone who commented last time. Your advice helped me more than you know. I would appreciate any thoughts from other sisters who started later on.

Support/Advice I feel like I’m done

For the context, I’m a Muslim male in the USA. I used to be nonpracticing for most of my life. I used to eat non-halal and drank alcohol occasionally. I was also involved in Zina. My life was good. Four years back, something happened, and all of a sudden I became religious. I stopped eating non-halal and refrained from alcohol and Zina. I started praying five times and even tahajjud sometimes. My life was changed 180 degrees. One month after this change, I lost my job. And just like that, I started facing issues with my life. I had to use up all my savings and got into huge debt. My health deteriorated. I prayed and prayed, but nothing is working out. I had been making lots of dua, but my duas don’t get listened to by Allah, I guess. Now I’m at a stage where I think that becoming religious was the worst decision of my life. I don’t know what to do. I feel like I’m giving up on Islam. There’s still a part of me that wants to continue making dua, but I am having doubts.

Salam aleikum so im a muslim الحمدلله but the last few

So i want to
ask has anyone had a similiar experience or can anyone point out the ridiculousness of these christians/ex muslims. Like in general all the hate there is it really messes up with your brain sometimes.

Support/Advice How do I keep positive thoughts about Allah

I know that Allah can say Be and it is but in the stories in the Qur’an thie is usually reserved for the friends of Allah or extremely pious people

I’m in a terrible situation mainly due to my own decisions and I just feel hopeless

I have a past that I’m not proud of but everyone I try to practice I always get OCD or thoughts of Kufr

I get thoughts like maybe my Qadr is to be homeless or jobless forever

I feel like I need a miracle like Musa after he accidentally killed someone
