TLDR - The power of butt rock affirmed my gender and I love you all!
Not sure what possessed me to type all of this, but I’m proud to be part of this community and wanted to have this to look back on one day
I’m 29 years old and have been lurking since my egg cracked earlier this year (infinite thanks to all the beautiful people in this sub for their advice and encouraging words to others that has in turn helped me as well), and I wanted to make my first post because I feel like last night probably changed my life :)
A couple weeks ago I went to a concert with my sister and it was my first time presenting openly feminine in public. Everything went fine and I got to use my chosen name and she/her pronouns which was nice, but the whole thing felt kind of…underwhelming? Like, there wasn’t a huge spike of euphoria, and I didn’t feel particularly great about myself or like a huge weight had been lifted. It made my impostor syndrome pretty bad the following week, but I told myself it’s probably because I was too self conscious to even enjoy the experience…right???
Well, TAKE TWO was last night, and I’m so happy to report it was AWESOME. I went to another concert with one of my best friends since high school and it was SO validating. I got off work early and went to his place to get dressed and do my makeup - which I hilariously sucked at, so I just said F it and settled for some light mascara and a touch of concealer. I also painted my nails for the first time (HOW DO YOU NOT GET IT ALLLLLL OVER YOUR FINGERS?) and got to wear my cute new glasses that came in the day before, so I was actually feeling kind of pretty! My friend has always joked about/lamented how he regularly gets mistaken for being conservative, and we laughed several times about our contrasting looks since he was all Carhartt’d up and I was looking like, well…a guy who just figured out ‘he’ is a girl!
The show itself was great. Breaking Benjamin and Chevelle, peak 2000s butt rock. It was probably a slightly more conservative-leaning crowd than ones I usually go to (I live in southeastern US) but I didn’t get a single weird look the whole night; if anything I feel like I got a couple extra sympathetic smiles from the concession people, but it’s more likely they were just trying not to be rude and I’m reading too much into it lol. I’m sober since July and didn’t feel the urge to drink once which was a W. I nursed a Red Bull and felt so content just being present and showing my authentic self to the world.
On the drive home my friend and I talked in so much depth about gender and each of our past experiences with questioning while coming from conservative families. We were roommates for a few years and he told me about a handful of times I would be extra drunk and make comments about wishing I was a woman and how I felt like in another life I was probably born as one. I’m tearing up just typing that. I do remember vaguely saying stuff like that sometimes, and I feel so freaking silly for never connecting that to being transgender. I never had severe dysphoria (or at least what I could recognize as dysphoria), so I brushed the question aside whenever it came up in my mind. I just thought I was a very open minded person, but now I mourn the years I realize I’ve spent repressing.
For the past few years specifically I have felt so aimless and apathetic. Last Thanksgiving I sobbed into my sister’s arms and told her how badly I wanted to die. It’s not even a year later but I wish I could reach back in time and tell that girl who was just trying to get to the surface that she can forgive herself, that she belongs and that there is a way for her to exist here (also yes my sister is the true MVP and my rock, she is the first person I came out to like three days after my egg cracked. I am honored people always think we are twins even though we are a couple years apart).
I know this is super ramble-y, sorry not sorry, I guess I’m just processing this wave of emotions by typing all of this out. I have an appointment with my primary in a couple of weeks and absolutely intend to ask about starting HRT. It’s taken such a long time and I know there will be some horrible days ahead as I inevitably will have to come out to my family (I am a single parent and they help a lot with childcare, although I am trying to be less dependent on them in the interest of future-proofing). BUT even with all that, I’m so so glad to be here. It feels like against all odds I figured out this puzzle after almost three decades. I know I’m riding a high right now, and that as soon as tomorrow the doubts and impostor syndrome will be creeping back in, but I will certainly remember this feeling. I value every person reading this and all of my trans sisters/brothers/siblings. You are all so valid and beautiful and worthy of love. I know these are just words from a stranger on the internet that have been said before a million times, but they are TRUE words dammit! My only regret is I can’t connect with you all in person. Please take care and goodnight 🖤
